Out of the Box: Look of the Week

15 Sep

After I talked up last week’s bumper “Out of the Box” this one is slightly longer and all the events, they keep on coming; TIFF, NYFW and the Creative Arts Emmys. We have a fun mix of fancy red carpet, daytime attire and even an airport look.

Plus, The X-Files celebrated its 24th anniversary and I wrote about Dana Scully’s influence on TV work wardrobes for The ObserverYou should know by now how I feel about Tatiana Maslany’s style—strongly positive—and she gives great casual and fancy. At the Stronger TIFF premiere, this J. Mendel is of course the latter and the color/ruffles are fantastic. As is Maslany’s dark lipstick choice.

And as I mentioned on Twitter the other day, I am so excited to see her post-Orphan Black career and that her extraordinary talent will reach a wider audience. Mohair sweaters are a quiet obsession of mine and everything about Elisabeth Moss in Rochas, at a screening for The Square is ’50s inspired perfection.

Another fabulous pick from super stylist Karla Welch and I cannot wait to see what Moss will be wearing at the Emmys on Sunday.

See also this incredible tailored look.

Even if Brie Larson’s directorial debut wasn’t called Unicorn Store, I would applaud her airport ensemble—fluffy whimsical sandals aside—and both Larson and fiancé Alex Greenwald look cool af.

The Vampire’s Wife is a brand that has been doing very good things of late and Maggie Gyllenhaal’s silver frock continues this trend. Maggie has been crushing it during this press tour for The Deuce.

Also, Maggie addressed one of the important issues of our time (and you get to see how great the sleeves are in this Watch What Happens Live clip). At the New York mother! premiere before this happened with a T-shirt swap, there was a whole lot of couples coordinating between Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys. Also on the highly anticipated Emmy red carpet list.
The prelude to the main event and the Creative Arts Emmys—for costume wins head here—delivered with Niecy Nash looking divine in a figure hugging and puffed sleeve scarlet dream. Also in red and giving me so much life is Angela Bassett in Romona Keveza. I’m sad she didn’t win her guest actress in a comedy category for the amazing Thanksgiving episode of Master of None.Serving up super sexy drama in gold and black Mikael D is Laverne Cox. Currently fantasy casting a movie with Cox and Margot Robbie based on their red carpet looks.I was already enamored by Emily V. Gordon’s style and then I watched The Big Sick and fell further in love—the red brain sweater was based on something Emily wore. This is another great red carpet look in floral Self-Portrait and Kumail Namjiani scrubs up well in a midnight blue tux.Moving on to NYFW and it has been a very busy week/month/year for Elisabeth Moss. And another 50s-adjacent look at Kate Spade New York. A brand I very much enjoy (and can almost afford).Florals continue to dominate and at the Refinery29 29Rooms: Turn It Into Art event, Issa Rae and Gabby Sidibe looks like they are having a blast.

Insecure wrapped up its second season with a very strong finale and it has been another season full of great costuming.Obligatory “I still miss The Carrie Diaries” mention because here is Austin Butler—wearing a Radiohead tee—at Jeremy Scott with girlfriend, Vanessa Hudgens. Two mohair sweaters in one week! Skai Jackson pairs hers with a burgundy pleated skirt and this outfit at Libertine is pretty much an ideal fall ensemble. Jackson is only 15 and definitely way cooler than me.The Outlander premiere was an emotional watch for me, but I am very glad to have it back and switching out ’50s Boston maternity style for a very cool and colorful look at Delpozo is Caitriona Balfe. Balfe has been having a very good NYFW.Chunky ankle/calf boots are here to stay it would seem and I am more than fine with this dip back to the ’90s trend as previously seen from Louis Vuitton last year. Michelle Monaghan is at Oscar de la Renta and I love the edged up glam of this look.Obligatory “I still miss Selfie” mention and Karen Gillan’s super cute romper at Self-Portrait looks like something Eliza would wear. Plus, more ankle boots to covet. The Christian Siriano front row looked the most fun and I want to have a boozy lunch with all four of these women. And if Leslie Jones could lend me her cape then that would be a bonus.

I’m looking forward to seeing who will be wearing Siriano on Sunday. I’m all about the Emmys right now.In more great fabulous front row news; Nicole Kidman and Naomi Watts in coordinating and yet contrasting florals at Michael Kors. Naomi Watts continues to be an Instagram fave.

It is no secret that I am a long time Michelle and Busy fan and I was very excited when Michelle popped up on Busy’s Insta last week. Even more so when they did a whole Dawson’s Creek thing a couple of days after. Which also included this amazing photo.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

23 Jun

The theme of this week’s “Out of the Box” is fun with a whole lot of whimsical patterns across various public appearances. The pre-Emmy nomination campaigning is now on the quieter side, but there is still plenty going on including several premieres and more magazine delights on the back of last week’s bumper rundown.

In exciting news, I have a piece over at Elle about Wonder Woman, glasses and makeover montages in movies. Check that out here.Preacher returns Sunday (June 25) and I’m really excited to have Ruth Negga as Tulip back on TV. Tulip was one of the best dressed new characters of 2016 and as any regular reader will be aware, Ruth Negga crushed it on the most recent film awards circuit.

This pattern continues at the Preacher premiere with Negga in a tricky Chanel feathered, beaded and tulle frock; she’s making this whole fashion thing look so easy.In more magical fashion unicorn news; the new Spider-Man promo tour continues and at the Barcelona photocall Zendaya looks effortlessly cool in a Delpozo ensemble that has a lot going on.

Flamingos are super prevalent right now as everyone wants to put a bird on it; from clothes to every single piece of summer homeware I’ve seen recently and yet this top looks like none of the items I have seen. Also those pants would look terrible on me, but I want them.

Zendaya is great and if you haven’t read her Vogue cover story yet then I would definitely recommend. The Big Sick is on my most anticipated summer movie list and at the New York premiere Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon look fabulous while promoting the film they wrote together. Emily gives great lipstick and pattern, which are pretty much two of my favorite things.Keeping with the lipstick/pattern theme is Kirsten Dunst in Gucci at the Build Series discussion and I have been style crushing on Dunst since I was a teen. Dunst has been hitting all the style notes throughout The Beguiled press tour from Cannes ball gowns to airport attire. Sofia Coppola looks classic and also pajama adjacent in those pants, which I am definitely here for.

Also in Sofia Coppola news here are several pieces that I have been reading this week including Soraya Roberts doing a deep dive on the themes of Coppola’s work, Ira Madison III taking on the controversy of Coppola removing Hallie, the slave character from The Beguiled, Inkoo Kang discussing Coppola’s problematic portrayal (and erasure) of racial elements in films such as Lost in Translation and The Bling Ring and Kristen Yoonsoo Kim’s interview with Coppola.Bonus Kirsten Dunst does fabulous casual style and even though I have already given these very ’70s jeans a shout out, they deserve another.

One more thing from The Beguiled press tour with a bonus Jesse Plemons mention on Late Night with Seth Meyers. Also Fargo season 2 really is the best TV Fargo. In amazing cover news; Mahershala Ali dominated my Twitter feed on Tuesday when GQ released these stunning images and his smile is pure delight. As is the rest of the photoshoot (yes I want this AMI Alexandre Mattiussi sweatshirt).

And the piece that accompanies the super summery fashion editorial is both thoughtful and thought provoking. It is an incredible profile by Carvell Wallace that reflects on a range of topics including the current political climate:

“I think African-Americans have a very convoluted relationship with patriotism. The fact is, we essentially were the abused child. We still love the parent, but you can’t overlook the fact that we have a very convoluted relationship with the parent. I absolutely love this country, but like so many people have some real questions and concerns about how things have gone down over the years and where we’re at. And that’s from a place of love, because I want the country to be what it says it is on paper.”

It is an in-depth interview covering Ali’s childhood, religion, his career and fame. It is one of the best profiles of the year and Carvell Wallace makes this so much more than your bog standard actor puff piece.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

23 Feb

Award season is almost at an end and there’s going to be plenty of style posts here at TV Ate My Wardrobe over the next few days including my personal favorite red carpet event; the Independent Spirit Awards and of course the big one. This week has also featured the Costume Designers Guild Awards and you can check out or rundown of the winners and sartorial highs here.

This doesn’t mean that everyone is lying low before the Oscars and there are plenty of bold looks from the Vanity Fair hosted Young Hollywood celebration, the WGA Awards, Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards, magazine editorials and more. yara-shahidiPattern clashing comes in many forms and at the Vanity Fair ‘Toast to Young Hollywood’ Yara Shahidi continues her style domination in a Chanel double; red and white striped wide leg pants and floral sparkle infused sweater.

Managing to be both casual and glam paired with a bag which looks like a hybrid version of those tiny backpacks from the ’90s. Look for more Yara Shahidi below.cynthia-erivoHow to wear pajamas at a fancy event as demonstrated by Cynthia Erivo in beautiful silk printed J. Crew. The cropped length and green heels add a dressier element making this outfit perfect for the red (or purple in this case) carpet.janelle-monae-essenceFabulous ladysuit alert from Janelle Monáe at the Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards and Monáe was one of several honorees including Issa Rae, Yara Shahidi and Aja Naomi King (the show will air Sunday, March 5 on OWN). The splash of yellow piping adds some bold color to Monáe’s usual black and white; crushing it as always.gabrielle-unionGabrielle Union looks the picture of elegance in embellished (and sparkly) Prada. kofi-siriboeQueen Sugar’s super handsome Kofi Siriboe gives great windowpane checks and this is an excellent suit choice. Also Queen Sugar is so good and I don’t think I have said that enough on here.jessica-st-clair-and-lennon-parham-wgaAt the WGA Awards Lennon Parham and Jessica St. Clair opted for two very different and successful floral dress takes. I am so very ready for season 3 of Playing House to come back already.kumail-nanjiani-and-emily-v-gordonFor the classic award show black attire look no further than Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon at the WGAs. Great lipstick choice too. And as the Independent Spirit Awards are tomorrow it is a good time to revisit this moment of Carol parody perfection from last year’s ceremony.

I am very much looking forward to what Nick Kroll and John Mulaney have in store as this year’s Independent Spirit Awards hosts.

Abigail Spencer joins Yara Shahidi in the ‘pattern clashing we love’ category this week in leopard print, colorful geometric shapes blended with florals.

Timeless finished its first season on Monday and it has yet to be renewed; it also happens to be one of the most fun offerings this season as it is ambitious, has a strong dynamic between the three leads and incredible costuming. There was a slight uptick in the ratings for the finale so hopefully a renewal is on the cards.maisie-williamsOver this week Wonderland has been unveiling the multiple covers for their Spring issue including icon Debbie Harry and Yara Shahidi’s one below. This is prime time for magazines that look great and also weigh a tonne – let’s just say I was glad I had my totepak when I bought these two – and no doubt I’ll also be getting this one.

What I really like about this Maisie Williams cover is how much she looks like a regular 19 year-old, well a regular 19 year-old who can afford Chanel. But between the Cons and the minimal makeup she is giving off a whole lot of low key vibes.img_0736Keeping with the floral theme and soaking us in springtime is Yara Shahidi for her second appearance this week and wearing the much more affordable Topshop (Shahidi is now a face of Beyonce’s Topshop Ivy Park brand). Fabulous lipstick and shimmery eyeshadow.janelle-monaeAnother double on “Look of the Week” and award season can feel long especially when it is a lot of the same faces, but one person who always manages to keep things fresh is Janelle Monáe and this is the case in both editorials and public appearances. For L.A. Confidential magazine she works both frills and sequins taking a step away from her signature black and white palette; it’s hard to make this much frills work outside of an ’80s homage and yet she is doing just that. Magical Fashion Unicorn status always and one of my most anticipated for Sunday.

Just look for Monáe getting food at Hot N Juicy Crawfish after the show in her fancy attire as she explains in the L.A. Confidential piece:

“Like, I’m literally in a ball gown, a custom black-and-white ball gown, straight from the People’s Choice Awards or the Golden Globes. And I go into this place, sit down, put on a bib, and eat. And that’s what I love about LA, that you can come straight from a red carpet event and go to a place like that.”danai-gurira-and-andre-hollandOne of Janelle Monáe’s Moonlight co-stars Andre Holland appears alongside longtime friend/collaborator and TV Ate My Wardrobe fave Danai Gurira as part of new “When They Met” New York Times feature. The interview shows the depth of their relationship (they are currently working on a screenplay together) and regular readers will know how much I love this IRL background stuff.

Their outfits are both simple and striking in the accompanying photo shoot and I particularly love Andre Holland’s excuse for not watching The Walking Dead:

“I have a very weak stomach and a very vivid imagination.”
