Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

2 Oct

Welcome to Behind the Insta-Scenes! A new feature offering a roundup of the best behind the scenes photos posted on Instagram from a variety of TV show and personal accounts from the people who are on them. This includes sneak peeks from future episodes, what’s airing this week and flashing back to the past. It’s a comedy heavy first edition including The Mindy ProjectParks and Recreation, The Daily Show and Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

Starting with the woman whose Instagram we have been pouring over all summer for a multitude of reasons – amazing outfits both on screen and off, plus so much Chris Messina – and the one we refer to as the gift that keeps on giving; Mindy Kaling.

First up a shot from episode 8 including its title “Diary of a Mad Indian Woman” and that phone call must be important considering what is also going on in the shot and is being ignored.

A super cute outfit including a strawberry print top, Chanel purse and red booties (coveting these so hard).

Parks and Recreation is currently shooting its final season so expect plenty of photos from this set. This one is courtesy of Retta and gives me a much needed April Ludgate costuming fix.

More from the Parks and Rec set and Aziz Ansari gifts us this fun looking super swish moment with Retta – the return of Treat Yo’ Self Day?

Lena Dunham is doing the big Not that Kind of Girl book tour at the moment and this includes stopping by The Daily Show and hanging out with former Girls guest star Jessica Williams.

To celebrate the return of Brooklyn Nine-Nine Chelsea Peretti shared this heart filled shot with co-star Stephanie Beatriz. More booties (and slippers) to add to my wish list.

The Wish List: Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Gina’s Sweaters

13 Feb

It looks like we have a rival to April Ludgate as the character whose wardrobe we covet the most and the character in question comes from another Mike Schur co-created show as Chelsea Peretti’s Gina adds another couple of sweaters to the wish list she is already on. Both the new wish list additions feature on the recent episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine and while I probably wouldn’t wear the Floorgasm attire, Gina is quickly turning into a TV Ate My Wardrobe favorite.

Gina B99First up this lightning bolt sweater adds weather whimsy to your outfit and it’s from A.L.C. Plus it looks great with red pants if you want to brave the colored pants thing – and you really should – mustard pants are what I’m currently after (not to be worn with the mustard hoodie when I eventually find the perfect one). Gina’s wearing really fantastic lipstick too and it adds another pop of color to this ensemble.

Gina Brooklyn Nine Nine sweaterThis diamond sweater is from J. Crew and it’s cashmere so not only does it look awesome, it also feels incredible. An itchy sweater is terrible no matter how fantastic it looks and you won’t have that problem here. More great lip color too. And Gina’s right, she does have great hair.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

29 Nov

Costumes and red carpet appearances all feature on this week’s edition of “Out of the Box” and include 19th century dueling attire, pajamas, sweaters and houndstooth. I did want to talk about something from the Boardwalk Empire season finale, but as this blog doesn’t have page breaks there’s no way to conceal this very spoilery image (click on the link to see the shot). Suffice to say it is a stunningly executed scene and one that makes my heart ache.

Elijah The OriginalsFlashback time on The Originals and Elijah’s hunter green dueling costume complete with tailcoat, pantaloons, cravat and leather knee high boots is an impressive look. There’s not a bad wig in sight (Klaus also looks rather dashing in his waistcoat), something the flashback scenes occasionally suffer from. The Originals has impressed me so far this season as we learn more about the perceived cycle of betrayal that Klaus thinks he is experiencing as he continues his constant quest for loyalty – he had it from his siblings, but he’s treated them in such a way that they can no longer stand by him. This is A+ costuming work from Jennifer Bryan.

NG_310-2_0011Moving on to the present and another superb pajama set from Jess on New Girl. These ones are custom made and you can get the bicycle pictured material here if you fancy making your own (thanks Worn on TV for the heads up). Jess’ pajama collection is pretty immense and while most of the sets tend to come from Victoria’s Secret (unlike the models Jess tends to button hers up), having a few that are one of a kind injects originality into the mix.

Gina Brooklyn Nine Nine ThanksgivingIt’s been a big week for sweaters here at TV Ate My Wardrobe and Gina from Brooklyn Nine-Nine has already featured on the wish list for a sweater she wore earlier this season. Wearing a Marc by Marc Jacobs sweater on this week’s Thanksgiving themed episode, Gina takes a place on the “Out of the Box” list as this jungle green (yeah it looks blue to me) patterned piece is a delight. As is the high horse that Gina is riding out on in this scene. The ‘Luna’ sweater is currently at sale price here.

lizzy-caplan-at-golden-globe-awards-season-celebration-in-hollywood-1My current hankering for all the toothed patterned clothing – puppy, dog and hound – means that Lizzy Caplan’s double houndstooth print by Reem Acra is a sight to behold. The gold waistband helps to break up the contrasting, yet similar prints and this is brilliantly bold look. Caplan’s is a TV Ate My Wardrobe favorite and she is willing to mix things up on the red carpet and step out of the safe zone, it doesn’t always work but on this occasion it is terrific and we applaud her for it. Plus she has been a complete charmer on Masters of Sex this season.

The Wish List: Bright and Bold Sweaters

26 Nov

It’s pretty much December and so we are well and truly into sweater season. While not an official season it is my personal favorite and if you want to add to your collection here are some of the best examples of bold designs that have recently appeared on TV. Striped sweaters are a weakness of mine, but I wanted to go beyond the standard Jess from New Girl options.

Whack-A-MoleOn the most recent episode of The Good Wife, Robyn wore a Fairlee Colorblock wool Diane von Furstenberg sweater (this item is currently on sale) in what is referred to as ‘Fetish Pink.’ The pink and orange clash, but it’s a combination that works thanks to the charcoal grey block in the middle. Robyn’s costuming is wildly different from Kalinda’s leather look and from the sharp tailoring of everyone else at Florrick/Agos. Bold colors are part of the Robyn styling and this helps disarm those she is investigating. It also means that people she works with might not take her too seriously which is why she has been working extra hard to save her job.

April owl sweaterThe costuming of April Ludgate influenced my decision to start TV Ate My Wardrobe as each episode pretty much had me stating that I wanted to own something she was wearing. April’s clothes tend to be a lot more colorful than you might expect from a character who professes that she hates most things. One thing April doesn’t hate is animals so the owl is rather apt and this jacquard sweater by Isabel Marant is high on my wish list (sadly it is currently sold out).

Gina Brookly nine nineMoving on to something more affordable and Gina’s French Connection horse sweater from episode 3 of Brooklyn Nine-Nine is on sale at the moment. Gina’s wardrobe choices are a bit more free and loose over the other female characters on this show because she’s the only non-cop and this monochromatic equine number is delightful.

Dorrit the carrie diariesAh the slogan sweater and while this Forever 21 “Thanks for Nothing” emblem isn’t really something I can see myself wearing now, it’s got the right amount of teen angst for a character like Dorrit on The Carrie Diaries. This show might be set in the ’80s but a lot of the clothes are contemporary and come from stores that teenagers both shop at and can afford.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

27 Sep

It’s been a big red carpet week thanks to the Emmys (for all our coverage head here) and so Out of the Box is going to return its focus to the costuming that has caught our eye on TV this week. Featuring characters that are Out of the Box regulars and some new faces this is a snapshot of the week on TV and costuming that has caught our attention.

Breaking Bad hat and parka

The penultimate episode of Breaking Bad saw Walter White isolated and broken as he started a new life in a cabin somewhere in New Hampshire. It’s not much of a life as he has to spend $10,000 for an hour of company and two copies of Mr Magorium’s Wonder Emporium is all he has to watch. His first attempt to leave the cabin begins with him putting on the Heisenberg hat; a symbol of the empire he had created and the elusive figure that was feared. Combined with the parka coat and the surroundings this takes any of the menace out of it and the trip is futile, with Walt returning to his cabin of solitude. The next time we see him venture outside he has ditched the Heisenberg hat and opted for a more sensible beanie and it appears as if Heisenberg has gone for good. That is until he sees the Charlie Rose interview with his former partners and for one last episode Heisenberg is set to return.

Sleepy-Hollow-102

Oh Sleepy Hollow you are the most nonsensical fun that is on TV at the moment and the first two episodes have certainly squeezed a lot of mythology into them. The one thing that is grounding the show is the central relationship between Tom Mison’s Ichabod Crane and Nicole Beharie’s Lt. Abbie Mills. The crazy story part isn’t necessarily what hooks people into a show; it’s the chemistry between the characters that increases the satisfaction of a journey like this and it makes the ridiculous moments easier to swallow. Ichabod is still dressed in the clothes he arrived in and it’s unclear whether he will get a wardrobe update. This helps with the notion that he isn’t from this time and I can’t quite picture him in jeans and a t-shirt, though I also really want to see the inevitable makeover episode when they don’t have witches and headless horseman to deal with.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Brooklyn Nine-Nine is another new show that benefits from a strong central pairing with Andy Samberg and Andre Braugher playing two very different cops. Braugher is the new Captain at the precinct Andy Samberg’s Detective Jake Peralta works at and the second episode reinforced the conflict between Jake’s easy going style and Captain Holt’s by the book attitude. Uniform has been a point of contention in both the pilot and with their undercover surveillance this week; Jake is seeing how far he can push his new captain. Jake’s minivan disguise is Harvey Norgenbloom and Harvey wears sandals, not the best footwear choice for chasing after bad guys. This push and pull works because Samberg is so good at doing the goofy manchild role and Braugher has the perfect level of deadpan. I’ve been impressed with both of these episodes and how quickly these characters have been established.

NG_ep302-sc20_1080Jess got wasted on New Girl this week after Nick’s solid advice that drinking makes you cooler and her hangover outfit is wonderful; the plaid shirt she slept in – it looks like it could be one of Nick’s but it’s actually a woman’s shirt that you can buy here – the key is that it is baggy as you don’t want anything too tight after a night of heavy drinking and toilet bowl dancing. The sunglasses are an important addition as is the coffee cup that Jess is clutching (a can of Diet Coke is my preferred solution).

Parks and Recreation - Season 6It’s April’s yellow mustard hoodie that is top of my clothing wish list and you’d be surprised how hard it is to find something this simple. Parks and Recreation returned for season 6 yesterday with a double bill episode and a trip to London (and Scotland). April’s dress at the awards ceremony is the same Alice + Olivia dress that Gossip Girl’s Kelly Rutherford was seen wearing at New York Fashion Week. Along with this mustard hoodie there are other repeated outfits featured in this premiere of Parks and Rec that are on my most wanted list including Leslie’s mixed polka dot blouse and it makes sense to reuse costumes with these types of characters.

Jean Ralphio and Mona Lisa

Special mention has to go to the wardrobe of Jean-Ralphio and Mona Lisa; this more than double denim explosion is as amazing as Jean-Ralphio’s hair is huge.
