Best of New York Comic-Con 2014 Style

14 Oct

New York Comic-Con took place over the weekend and the types of shows it attracted went beyond the usual sci-fi and fantasy offerings that you might expect from this kind of event. So while Netflix took the opportunity to show off photos and footage from Daredevil you could also catch up with the Broad City ladies and the spies from The Americans. While not on the same scale as SDCC, there is still plenty for us to pour over including the aforementioned Daredevil debut (alas the footage was for attendants only).

Comic-Con attire tends to straddle cute/casual/relaxed and the dress code is neither one specific thing nor another. Even a jumpsuit makes the style hit list.

Charlie CoxLet’s start with Daredevil and Charlie Cox will be taking on the Matt Murdock mantle on Netflix (no release date yet); here he is working the super smile, beard and a denim shirt. The reddish toned hair is all part of the Matt Murdock look and Cox landing this lead role has me very excited about this project. Plus his time on Boardwalk Empire showed he was capable of playing both the fearsome and romantic side. If only he could use the Owen Irish accent on this show.

DaredevilAnd this the first still of Cox all lawyer suited up as Matt Murdock. This is some pretty damn good tailoring and he is wearing it well, along with signature red tinted specs that have a hint of John Lennon.

Deborah Ann WollSwapping Bon Temps for Hell’s Kitchen is Deborah Ann Woll; I am thrilled to see her score something like this after True Blood and I hope she gets to be more than just a love interest. A simple chic cornflower blue dress and the slightly different toned blue sandals avoid matchy matchy status.

The AmericansThe Americans cast and showrunners didn’t reveal much of anything about the next season (which starts shooting this week), but they did wear matching ‘Commie Con’ t-shirts (Matthew Rhys’ idea) compete with the ‘C’ as a hammer and sickle. Both Keri Russell and Annet Mahendru jazzed their looks up; Russell staying all black with a leather mini, blazer and stilettos and Mahendru rocking boots and the lip embellished Alice + Olivia skirt (also worn by Jamie Chung at NYFW).

Keri Russell and Matthew RhysBonus Americans panel shot with a closer look at the bespoke tees. And because they are adorable.

Abbi and Ilana! Another occasion where Abbi is my style twin (I have a very similar French Connection dress) and Ilana is my style hero in a shirt that’s making me think of a Care Bears color palette. Thankfully there is “Hack into Broad City” to tide us over until January when Broad City returns.

Aisha Tyler NYCCA jumpsuit I like is rare, but Aisha Tyler’s blue slouched drawstring number is giving me all the positive feelings. Pockets plus red shoes and a bold lip color all add up to a very good outfit and strong style week for Tyler.

Judy GreerTyler’s Archer co-star Judy Greer has also opted for crimson footwear and the all-black button down shirt and suit look is working, in part thanks to this splash of color. This also reminds me that I still need to read Greer’s I Don’t Know What You Know Me From: Confessions of a Co-Star.

Katie AseltonGoing for monochrome is The League’s Katie Aselton in a simple chic black cropped sweater and a white skirt. This would come with a no drinking or eating warning due to spilling reasons.

Lyndie GreenwoodConfession – I have a bit of an eyebrow obsession and it’s always the first thing I notice about someone’s face (a timely essay from the Hairpin regarding eyebrows) and Sleepy Hollow’s Lyndie Greenwood has excellent eyebrow game and it is very evident here (this is for excellent shape and eyebrow expression usage). Peter Pan collar shirt and side braid completes this cute Comic-Con ensemble.

Hack into Broad City: Cereal War

23 Sep

Broad City isn’t back for season 2 until January (every sad face possible), but until then feast your eyes on the latest installment of “Hack into Broad City” in which Abbi and Ilana host the first annual cereal war via video chat (or “maybe it’s just an exchange of technology and culture and everybody wins). Like all good breakfast food cereal doesn’t have to be eaten first thing in the morning and it can stand for many awesome things.

Broad City

Video chat is an important part of the Ilana and Abbi friendship with Ilana going so far as doing this during sex (much to Abbi’s horror) and as “Hack into Broad City” was part of the initial web series it makes sense to throw up* some of these old videos during what feels like a lengthy hiatus. Hopefully there will be more new offerings between now and January.

*One of these chats involves actual vomit so maybe pun intended. It is below and it is gross (and also hilarious as Abbi watches through her fingers pleading her not to). It also ended up in the pilot.

In the meantime here is both the new video that first appeared on Vulture followed by a few of my favorite earlier “Hack” videos with Ilana crossing multiple boundaries. One of these actually ends up being an Abbi move in first season and as with a lot of the original content it has been adapted for the show (like the vom moment).

And in other good news…

Blake Lively, Preserve and the TV Character Lifestyle Site Wishlist

15 Jul

Blake Lively’s lifestyle site Preserve is launching soon (rumored to be July 23) and other than having a name that conjures up images of jam or something to be looked at and not touched, it promises to “focus on artisans and products, many hand-made one-of-a-kind items all selected by Blake. Items will be available for purchase through the site. Preserve is all about story-telling through video. Blake will be in some of these videos.”

Serena GG bloggingNow as someone who subscribes to the Goop newsletter (who doesn’t want a Hamptons summer update in their inbox?!) one ridiculous and extravagant lifestyle blog from an actress is probably enough. Blake disagrees and told UK Vogue last year that “the main element of it is that it’s about storytelling and it’s about living a very one-of-a-kind, curated life, and how to achieve that. There’s nothing like it out there – it’s without a genre.” Ah, it’s “without genre” other than being a lifestyle blog, which I *think* is already a genre. Flashbacks to Serena’s blogging storyline on Gossip Girl is not helping and for some reason I’m contemplating a Gossip Girl rewatch. Send help.

I wonder if Blake will go the way of Goop offering aspirational and mostly unobtainable (for the average consumer) items and vacation suggestions or will she shock us with more affordable pieces. The phrase “one-of-a-kind, curated life” highly suggests the former. So while this doesn’t sound all that original, it has inspired this list of which TV characters I would like to see with their own lifestyle websites. Even if computers don’t exist in their world, parchment also works.

Broad CityAbbi and Ilana, Broad City: From their incredible style, money making schemes, phone finding solutions, dating antics, city travel alternatives and general lady friendship awesomeness I would definitely want a weekly newsletter from this duo.

Sally DraperSally Draper, Mad Men: Surviving boarding school, philandering/judgmental parents and pointers on late 60s teen fashion is what I would expect from this blog. And snark. So much snark and it would be glorious.

MindyMindy Lahiri, The Mindy Project: Dating advice, rom-com New York City tour spots and an endless supply of bright and bold clothing suggestions. Oh and a gym plan that involves celebrity saving scenarios. Mindy Kaling did have a lifestyle blog that she started in 2006 called “Things I’ve Bought That I Love” and it isn’t just crazy expensive items.

Olivia Pope white trenchOlivia Pope, ScandalTeach me how to wear white and not spill red wine down it and how to one might rock a white hat (metaphorical and literal) and still look stylish. Also includes sections on how to handle difficult parents and complicated relationships. And recipes for jam and Vermont vacation locations.

CerseiCersei Lannister, Game of Thrones: How to survive a patriarchal society, manipulation skills, insults to use while drinking copious amounts of wine and intricate braid hairstyle solutions. Also tips on how to accentuate any gown with some armor. Dating advice should be ignored.

Hannibal 2.02 H kill suitDr. Hannibal Lecter, Hannibal: How to look exquisite no matter what the activity with a whole host of fashion advice like “How to wear a three-piece suit while partaking in your favorite hobby.” There is also a cooking section, but you might want to change the ingredients. Take special care to read the etiquette section as rudeness will not be tolerated.

Which TV character would you take lifestyle advice from?

From Web to Cannes: The Women of Broad City Talk Authenticity in Comedy (Video)

9 Apr

The Broad City team traveled to Cannes this week to take part in a MIPTV keynote speech (“The Power of Comedy: Laughing its way from online to linear”) promoting the show to the overseas market alongside Comedy Central President of Content Development & Original Programming Kent Alterman and Caroline Beaton (Viacom International Program Sales). Executive producer Amy Poehler joined Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson to discuss what has made Broad City a success so far and how it went from web series to TV.

Broad City[Source]

In the keynote (which you can watch below) the origin of the show is discussed including how the pair became friends and where the first creative sparks were ignited (in a pizza shop). The Abbi and Ilana time comes at the beginning and end of the almost 30 minute panel and there’s some slightly dry executive chat in the middle. This is where phrases such as “funny is funny” and “creative vision” are repeated and while it is exec speak it does also apply to this show.

One part of the business aspect that did peak my interest is how comedy is a much harder sell initially to different territories and how “people get scared to back things.” There’s a misconception that comedy doesn’t translate, but other Comedy Central shows like The Daily Show which could be considered as very American are enormously popular globally (hence the Global Edition, I guess). Social media is a boost to the new belief that comedy does translate with Poehler adding “I think there’s a universality about young people’s ability to tell when something isn’t authentic. In countries all over the world people are finding and needing something that feels true and real to them, and also being very suspicious when it’s not.” Lady Gaga tweeting to her 40+ million followers about how much she loves Broad City is another fabulous (and free) way to get the word out globally.

Abbi and Ilana get asked the question they will forever be asked and that is “How closes to your characters are you?” Abbi tells a very funny story about her mom ringing after seeing the finale as some of their own experiences do make it onto the show, but generally everything is a heightened and more amplified version of reality. This leads to a look at other creative aspects of the show and how far it has come since the web series including the writers’ room aspect; now they can allocate these real life stories to other writers.

Diversity is something that is demanded “in cast, in voice” and Amy Poehler references past shows that wouldn’t necessarily fit into the television landscape today or they would at least face a negative response “It’s almost impossible to have a show about New York City with six white people living in a building.” This is what “makes Broad City broad.”

You can watch the whole keynote below and for a look at the style of Broad City head here.

Abbi and Ilana’s Best Broad City Style Moments

25 Mar

The first season of Broad City comes to a close tomorrow (Wednesday 26) and it’s going to be a strong contender for best of 2014 (yes we’re only a quarter of the way through the year). We talk about TV in comparison terms all the time – the “it’s like x meets y” mantra – and thanks to the setting and gender of its stars Girls became the instant benchmark. Broad City is very much its own show with Abbi and Ilana paving the way for a brand new kind of voice; one that doesn’t feel trapped by general comedic conventions. It helps of course Broad City has been going since 2010 through their web series and this is an extension of those characters – I’m so happy to see the denim vest print t-shirt made the leap.  Even with this early start, Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer’s show took time to go from what it was to what it is now and as it’s the season finale (it’s already been picked up for a second season) I want to celebrate this show by taking a look at all the incredible style moments.

Broad City 1.02 t-shirt denim vest printHere at TV Ate My Wardrobe costume and style is something that stands out when watching TV and the costume designer Staci Greenbaum has gone for isn’t all that different from the original web series. From all of the wish lists and posts on TV costuming there are many character closets I would like to pore over and share; quite often when I find out how much an item of clothing costs it’s clear that it is out of my budget. With Broad City it doesn’t feel this way and Greenbaum tells The Cut this is her aim “We try to keep it real-real not TV-real, you know what I mean?” The characters don’t have a crazy amount to spend on clothes so neither does Greenbaum.

Outfits are repeated and Abbi’s boots are on the more expensive end, but she wears them constantly. Same goes for her brown shoulder bag; shoes and bags tend to be where I spend more money on a single item as these are items you use daily. Ilana hasn’t met a pair of short shorts she doesn’t like and Abbi is all about the Lindsay Weir army style jackets. Both use layering to maximum effect and while casual attire accounts for about 75% of their wardrobe, they’re not timid when it comes to dressing for an occasion.

Here are some of my favorite looks from season 1:

Broad City 1.01 fursThey didn’t get paid for their humiliating cleaning experience in the pilot, so they paid themselves in furs, fancy looking booze and hats. I mean who wouldn’t?!

Broad City 1.01Also from the pilot and the many layers that are required for the sometimes cold New York City climate. Ilana’s brown leather jacket is one of her most worn items and it has plenty of space for any office equipment she wants to exchange – no liquid money, plenty of bartering power.

Broad City 1.03 judith lightA shirt the size of a napkin might not be considered as appropriate work attire, nor are the boy shorts or ripped jeans. Judith Light doesn’t seem to mind and neither do I.

Broad City 1.04This is their super casual look and the amazing Abbi boots. These outfits go through the ringer in this episode and this is part of the Broad City charm; there’s no vanity here.

Broad City 1.06 lost phoneAbbi is a girl after my own heart with how many stripped items she owns. I wish I could say the same for short shorts, but alas I lack the Ilana confidence (and legs). Maybe one day.

Broad City 1.08 wedding“Destination Wedding” delivers on the fancy frock attire; well for Abbi it does as Ilana thought they were wearing their old cater waiter uniforms. The backpack is what really makes this look.

Broad City 1.08Later Abbi ditches her fish drenched dress and changes into Lincoln’s tux; both are giving off cool as fuck vibes and a trip to a gentlemen’s club called Thrusts is the only course of action.

Broad City blue dressShopping for an exclusive rooftop party outfit is also covered and instead of a super long shopping montage Abbi is happy with the first dress she tries on and yes her ass does look amazing. Here’s Ilana’s cool girl look, complete with a super long fake ponytail – I love how many different looks Ilana can achieve just by altering her hair. Both women are exuding body confidence and it makes me SO HAPPY that this is a thing.

Broad City 1.08 drawstring hoodieSweaters with drawstring ties come in extra handy when your (still unseen) roommate’s boyfriend is going into extreme detail about his masturbation technique that you walked in on the previous day (also poor Julianna Margulies).

Broad City 1.08 Abbi and LincolnIt’s pretty cool before it’s over Abbi’s head as well. Ditto the red bag and Lincoln who I adore.

Broad City 1.06Ilana is not shy about her sexuality and while I’m a total Ilana and Lincoln shipper, I’m also glad we get to see a woman who is sexually liberated and whose bar pickup outfit is skinny jeans and a vest; there’s nothing too try about this look.

Broad City 1.03 mustard cardiganMore stripes and Abbi’s trusty brown shoulder bag, plus I haven’t met a mustard cardigan I don’t want. This is one of the many outfits that looks like someone on Abbi’s income would wear.

Broad City 1.09 balloonsIlana’s rage face while holding balloons is perfect (she is finding out if she could have herpes so the rage is understandable) and this is an extension of Ilana’s short shorts collection, this time with a pair of mini dungarees. This outfit is topped off with Ilana’s staple brown leather jacket and the repeat piece of clothing I love the most.

I will leave it to Abbi and Lincoln to show how happy this show and the costuming make me.

New York Fashion Week 2014: Day 1 and 2 Fantasy Costuming Round-up

8 Feb

It’s day 3 of New York Fashion Week and there’s already been runway shows galore. We thought we’d share some of our favorite looks so far from the fall 2014 collections and as the weather is still pretty terrible there’s a lot of knitwear and coats that look pretty enticing. What we’re going to do is some quick fire fantasy costuming from 10 different runway shows.

Kate SpadeJess wears a lot of Kate Spade on New Girl and the bow detail on this plaid coat is perfect for Ms. Day. As is the sparkly dress that is peaking out below it.

Kate Spade NYFWMindy doesn’t wear a lot of pants on The Mindy Project, but she does have an extensive collection of coats and this beautiful one from Kate Spade is very much in her bold color wheelhouse.

Kate Spade 2014It’s not 1950s vintage, but Kate Spade’s three-quarter length sleeve coat is very Virginia Johnson from Masters of Sex. The purse and gloves are heaven as are the brogues. The hat is super cute but maybe not for the Johnson look.

Charlotte Ronson 2014For Elizabeth Jennings when she is on some spy recon that might require a slight flash of leg on The Americans or this Charlotte Ronson skirt and sweater would probably be Britta’s idea of what a psychologist should wear on Community.

Creatures of Comfort 2014April from Parks and Recreation is all about the plaid and while I’m not sure if she’d be all that into the neckerchief, this Creatures of Comfort outfit is pretty April to me.

Nonoo 2014Scandal’s Abby has the best hair on TV (ok joint with Connie Britton) and her raven locks would look great with this dress from Nonoo and it is Scandal office appropriate.

NonooWhile I’m not loving the shiny Nonoo pants, this layered looking sweater is fantastic and is very Annie Edison on Community.

Tanya TaylorThis dress by Tanya Taylor screams Marnie from Girls – PS I hope she hooks up with Ray again on this week’s episode. I don’t know why I ship this couple but I do.

Rebecca MinkoffKate from Trophy Wife would look fantastic in this Rebecca Minkoff leather mini. The coat and blouse add a hint of office wear sophistication while still looking pretty cool. Alternatively this could be another Abby from Scandal outfit.

Rag & BoneRag & Bone are taking their cues from the ’90s and while this is very My So-Called Life I’m going to give this hooded sweater to Ilana on Broad City. I would switch the skirt for some short shorts.

Coach 2014Another April Ludgate outfit, this time from Coach.

CoachFlashback fantasy costuming with Coach and this would be ideal for Felicity Porter for her sophomore fall semester and we can pretend she doesn’t chop all her hair off on Felicity.

Peter Som 2014Olivia Pope loves a belted coat and this patterned Peter Som piece represents the chaos that surrounds her life on Scandal at the moment.

Peter SomAlana Bloom tends to wear a lot of pattern on Hannibal and this visually arresting Peter Som dress would look fantastic on her. The blurred floral imagery could mirror how uncertain things are going to get for this season as she works to prove that Will is innocent.

Tadashi ShojiMoving onto beautiful dresses with Tadashi Shoji and Mellie on Scandal always looks stunning in primary colors; it’s a strong contrast to the Olivia Pope neutral palette and this royal blue gown would look killer at a White House function.

Tadashi Shoji NYFWRed is one of Alicia Florrick’s power play costume colors and as we saw at the fancy soiree in season 4, Julianna Margulies looks as stunning in scarlet formal wear as she does in the courtroom on The Good Wife. This Tadashi Shoji dress would be a great addition to her closet.

Tadashi Shoji 2014One show that loves grand parties no matter what the theme or body count is The Vampire Diaries and the final of the three Tadashi Shoji beautiful gowns is so Elena (or Katherine). Basically Nina Dobrev should wear this.

Look out for more coverage of New York Fashion Week from TV Ate My Wardrobe.

Broad City Catch Up

29 Jan

Last week the first episode of Broad City aired on Comedy Central and while it’s going to get unfairly compared to Girls – young women with creative desires who live in New York City – it feels more like Curb Your Enthusiasm or Louie. Or you know its own separate entity. When something is new there is the urge to put it in the “it’s like meets y box (recently I saw Frances Ha as “it’s like Sex and the City meets Girls) for marketing and categorizing reasons and I have been guilty of doing this when describing a TV show or movie. Moving beyond this I want to look at Broad City and the material that existed before the half hour I watched last week. Yes I’m very late to this party.

Broad CityThe first episode introduces Ilana and Abbi (Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson are the creators of Broad City) and it’s very much in the middle of their story, there’s no this is how and why they’re friends. Not that this is necessary and the world already feels developed because it is. Broad City as you’re probably already aware begun as a web series in 2010 and you can watch it here, so this is what I did and here are the ones that stood out. The episodes average between two and five minutes so you can do what I did and binge in two sittings or take your time.

“Subway on a Sunday” is only the third episode and it’s the one that feels the most Larry David to me as this is an extension of the awkward ‘stop and chat.’ While the heightened reality comedic aspects are well done, it’s this observational humor that really strikes a chord with me. It also reminded me of when you say goodbye to someone and then it turns out that you’re going in the same direction as them. Awkward.

For anyone that found Fred Armisen hiding behind a coat stand the funniest thing on Broad City last week, then “Dog Sitting” is one for you. Plus there’s a super cute dog and Ilana’s showing how few boundaries she has coming into play; Ilana’s lack of filer is already one of my favorite things about Broad City. Though I’m totally an Abbi (eye rolling at myself right now). Oh and Ilana is wearing a t-shirt with a drawing of a denim vest and it’s kinda everything.

“Drummer Girls” shows Ilana and Abbi performing in the park and unlike the event in last week’s episode this one is a win for them and it’s totally charming.

Video chat plays an important part in the web series and this has been translated into the show as we saw Ilana throwing up and having sex while video chatting with Abbi (who was less than thrilled with either conversation). See no filter. This is a really fun one involving fake elevators and snack food. Also who doesn’t like music?

In the final installment of the web series the production values are noticeably higher in “I Heart New York.” Oh and there are famous comedic ladies (including the producer of the new show). It’s surreal, yet rooted in reality and involves a great gag with Abbi’s bag. Pretty much everything about the chugger (the charity mugger with the clipboard) is spot on, back when I smoked I was super guilt tripped into signing up.

Talking of the producer here is Amy Poehler talking to Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer about Broad City for Smart Girls at the Party. They discuss the origins of Broad City, their comedy backgrounds and the notion of ‘finding your voice.’ And there’s a dance party.

Watch the web series here and a new episode airs tonight (Wednesday 29) on Comedy Central.
