Boardwalk Empire Season 4 First Look

It’s more than six months later and I’m still mourning the loss of my favorite Irishman on TV, but it’s time to move on as HBO has released the first teaser promo for season 4 of Boardwalk Empire. New faces including Jeffrey Wright and Ron Livingstone make an appearance and there is a sense of familiarity with the glitz and the glamour alongside the violent underbelly of Prohibition. Richard Harrow features quite prominently much to my delight and Gretchen Mol’s Gillian Darmody looks a lot better than when we left her in heroin induced stupor (the heroin was meant for Gyp Rosetti, who didn’t survive the season). Jeffery Wright is playing Dr.Valentin Narcisse “a philanthropist, student of culture and the man who runs Harlem.” Will he be next the person who goes up against Nucky?

Mad Men 6.11 “Favors” Review: What Do You Expect in Return?

Last season on Mad Men Sally referred to New York City as “disgusting” after she witnessed a very adult act between Roger and Megan’s mother Marie, after “Favors” she might never want to return to her father’s apartment again. There are many secrets in the SC & P office (getting used to the new name) and it is easy to forget some of the personal relationships that have long since ended; this episode did a very good job of highlighting this and showing just how lonely these characters are. It would be so easy for everything to come crashing down around them if every truth was to come out, which is why favors are such an important commodity. Even when nothing is expected in return, the knowledge that comes from knowing a person’s darkest secret can becoming a bargaining chip in the future.  The Ted/Don conflict which has really existed in them bitching to others about their situation is addressed, but even if everything is well in business the same could not be said for the private matters of these characters. The doom that has permeated this season has led to discussion of what violence might befall a certain character, but the real horror on Mad Men is when dark truths are revealed.

The episode opens with Peggy – still living in the apartment she hates – being given another reason to want to flee this abode as she sees a rat. The rat makes a return later in the form of a blood trail across the floor (conspiracy theory doom alert) and when she calls Stan he doesn’t take up her offer to come over, he’s not her boyfriend after all. Peggy can’t ring Ted, because of his wife and kids situation and she doesn’t really have anyone else to turn to – Peggy you need to get yourself some better, ok some actual friends. One relationship that has long since changed and dissolved is between Peggy and Pete, it’s easy to forget that they were once intimate and have a child. The conversation between them while they are drunk and at dinner shows how familiar they are with each other and Pete reiterates that Peggy really knows him, echoing his statement from the end of season 2 when he confessed his love for her and she first told him about giving up their baby. It’s moments like this that remind me why I have been a Pete defender in the past and the effectiveness of these Pete and Peggy scenes is because they are so few. These scenes remind us that Pete isn’t just a weasel of a character, even if his own mother tells him that “You’ve always been unlovable.”

It turns out that someone is in love with Pete and the mystery of Bob Benson is revealed; it isn’t one of the many nefarious or soapy suggestions, instead he is gay and is in love with Pete. Pete’s disgust at the suggestion that Manolo is gay (he calls him a degenerate) doesn’t prevent Bob from giving a misguided speech “Couldn’t it be that if someone took care of you — very good care of you — if this person would do anything for you — if your well-being was his only thought — is it impossible that you might begin to feel something for him?” Pete rejects this and Bob’s knee touch rather emphatically by telling him to let Manolo go and that Manolo (read Bob) is “disgusting.”  Poor misguided Bob, now we know why he was so happy to do everything for Pete, but this approach is no way to make someone love you. Later on we see Pete alone in his dreary apartment with not even enough cereal to have for dinner; this is part of a montage of the SC & P at home; Peggy has got herself a cat that she can rely on, Ted returns home to his family and even if they don’t give him the satisfaction of work he is trying and then there is Don arriving back at his apartment drunk and disheveled.

Of course this isn’t a new state for Don to arrive home in and he’s even passed out with the police in his front room this season; this is a whole different scenario as he really doesn’t know what he will find when he opens the door. Don has spent most of the episode harping on about how important his children are and this is why he is trying to help his friend’s kid get out of his 1A (eligible for military service) situation. There is another reason of course and that is his feelings towards Sylvia, I also think he is doing this out of a sense of guilt as Arnold is a friend who he has wronged. The conversation between them in the bar and how broken Arnold is about this draft news is enough to quick start Don’s favor asking and I actually don’t think getting back with Sylvia is his intention (am I being too naive?) Of course this is what happens and Sylvia’s way of saying thank you is through sex. Sylvia explains that she ended it because she was frustrated that Don had fallen in love with her. I thought it would be due to Don treating her like crap in the hotel, but apparently not.

The huge moment is when Sally sees them and as soon as Sally got the keys to all of the apartments I started watching through the gaps in my fingers as if this was a horror movie. This is the kind of horror that Mad Men excels at, not the kind that we have been expecting since Megan wore the Sharon Tate t-shirt. Sally’s feelings towards her father fluctuate from “I don’t know you” to using him in a scoring battle with her mother, but this cements the former and will likely mean that Sally will stop doing the latter for now. Both Kiernan Shipka and Jon Hamm are excellent in their reactions in this scene and later on when Don tries to explain that what she saw wasn’t really what she saw.

Don rarely loses the facade of cocksure Don Draper to broken Don Draper, but one such time was when Betty confronted him with the Dick Whitman box of information and he could barely get a cigarette out of its packet. The way Don acts in the foyer of his building after Sally has run out is like this and he looks completely lost about what to do or say; he looks like he has been stabbed. Sally has gone and there is nothing he can do to stop her from telling Megan or her mother about what she has seen. So he does what Don always does and goes and gets wasted. When he returns Sally hasn’t said anything and Megan is oblivious, it gets even more fraught when Arnold and Mitchell turn up to say thanks to Don for all he has done and Megan praises him. Sally looks like she might throw up during this entire scene and she finally yells that Don makes her sick.

This can neatly get explained by Sally’s friend Julie (who is also pretty oblivious) telling Megan that Sally has a crush on Mitchell. The conversation between Don and Sally as they stand on either side of the door is Don using his best sales pitch to try and make Sally think that what she saw was in fact something very different. Sally is both too old and smart enough to know that this a lie, Don must realize this too but there are so many unspoken secrets in Don’s life that adding another to the pile is probably not going to do much. Don’s big Dick Whitman secret is mentioned in conversations with both Megan and Pete (I always forget that Pete was the first person to find this out) and his service is referenced in his bar chat with Arnold.

Other thoughts

– Ted says what we have all been saying all season “Don’t be an asshole, Don.” Now that things are settled between Ted and Don (that handshake is a binding contract) will Ted be more at peace when he goes home or will he still want something or someone (Peggy) more?

– Anytime there is an indication that Sally likes an older boy I get worried, Sally brings out the great protector in me. I’m also happy that Sally thinks that boys will not be that into girls who come across as dumb (like her friend Julie). Don’t ever change Sally.

– When Pete’s mother mentions the child that Peggy has with Pete, she thinks that she is talking to Trudy but Peggy reacts like she has been sucker punched; it’s a small moment from Elisabeth Moss but the emotion that she delivers in this scene at this point and when she realizes that Mrs Campbell is confused is fantastic. As is her reaction when Mrs Campbell starts talking about the passion with Manolo.

– Ted mentions that the dinner that he shares with Pete and Peggy is the agency he hoped for, this contrasts with the forced meal he shares with the Chevy guys later. Both are dripping with subtext, but one is a lot lighter and less tense than the other.

– Peggy has noticed that Stan sometimes uses a sexy voice.

– There are only two episodes left of Mad Men this season, is it all going to come crashing down around Don?

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

There has been a couple of award shows this week with both the CFDA and Glamour magazine hosting glitzy affairs and the pre-Emmy nomination roundtables are in full swing. Some of these have already been covered here at TV Ate My Wardrobe and have featured some really fantastic looks. As always there are no real rules to this weekly feature and as always it is a snapshot of what I have been watching (and looking at online) and each pick is for a variety of reasons including; what it adds to the storyline, what it tells us about the characters involved or simply because it looks good.

Winner: Megan Draper on Mad Men “A Tale of Two Cities”

Megan hippie lookWhile the Megan Draper theories have gone from slightly crazy to Don Draper hallucinating crazy the costuming for Megan this season has shown why Janie Bryant is so revered. Megan’s closet is huge and it needs to be as she has alternates between glamorous fashion forward pieces to her more relaxed look at home that wouldn’t look out of place in 2013. In Don’s drug induced hallucination he sees Megan in hippie attire, which matches the general look of the Hollywood party they are attending. This is the most relaxed Megan has looked all season though it’s not really Megan, but Don’s projection of the perfect version of Megan; she has quit her job and she is pregnant. The thing that drew Don to Megan in the first place was how she was with his children and California is the place where he cemented their relationship from a casual fling to fiancé. They have recently discussed the state of their relationship and even though they seem better than they have been for the entire year there is still distance (and not just the physical kind) between them. Is Megan actually pregnant or is this just wishful thinking on Don’s part?

Runner Up: Adam Scott and Amy Poehler in The Greatest Event in Television History

adam scott hart to hartLast night Adult Swim aired Adam Scott’s second “Greatest Event in Television History” and this time he teamed up with Parks and Recreation co-star Amy Poehler to recreate the opening title sequence of Hart to Hart. Both look like they are having a ball with the late ’70s/early ’80s look and if I didn’t know any better I would think that this was a Ben and Leslie fantasy sequence – though that would probably involve either Game of Thrones or political faces throughout history.

Runner Up: Ellie Kemper at The Hollywood Reporter Supporting Actor Photo Shoot

Ellie Kemper looked stunning at the CFDA Fashion Awards earlier this week and even though The Office has finished this doesn’t mean that this is the last we have seen of Kemper talking about her role on this show as she takes part in both Variety and The Hollywood Reporter’s Emmy discussions. Kemper talks about her experience coming onto The Office in season 5 when it was already a big hit and dealing with it finishing saying “the most emotional moment was when we filmed The Office finale. I was crying and crying, which is actually unusual for me.” I hadn’t watched The Office for two seasons but that final episode had me balling (one of these moments was when Joan Cusack revealed that she was Erin’s mother). As I said earlier in the week I really hope that Kemper gets to play roles beyond the standard girlfriend and funny best friend parts as she is a really terrific comedic actress.

Adam Scott and Amy Poehler in the Greatest Event in Television History

Last year Adam Scott and Jon Hamm recreated the opening credit sequence of ’80s detective show Simon & Simon in “The Greatest Event in Television History” and now Scott is back, this time with Parks and Recreation co-star Amy Poehler to tackle a shot for shot recreation of the Hart to Hart titles. Credit sequences have evolved since the late ’70s when Hart to Hart premiered and now it isn’t uncommon for a show to simply have a title card or a very short theme song.

This is in part down to the increased amount of commercials and a long title sequence would reduce how much can be fit into the episode and some shows such as New Girl have a long and short version of their opening music. It’s a shame in a way that credit sequences like this don’t really exist anymore, so this is a project I can fully get behind. Plus I’m missing Parks and Rec so seeing Scott and Poehler together is a bonus.

As with the last event (which can been seen over at Adult Swim) we get to see how the credit sequence came together and you might be surprised as to how little Amy and Adam like each other considering how closely they work on Parks and Rec (this is all in jest of course). Both look fantastic in their Hart to Hart costumes with Poehler rocking the feathered hair to maximum effect.

Chris Messina and the Art of a Strong Supporting Role

The Emmy pre-nomination discussion season continues with a look at supporting actors over at The Hollywood Reporter. This group of individuals might not be the star of their show but they are just as important in many ways.

The one person that I want to focus on from this group is Chris Messina who has been playing these strong supporting roles since his arc on the final season of Six Feet Under as Claire’s love interest Ted. Messina is currently in The Mindy Project and will be returning to The Newsroom as a guest star in July. Just a glance at his IMDb page and his credits from 2012 reveals a variety of roles in both film and TV including ArgoCeleste and Jesse ForeverRuby Sparks and the final season of Damages. Yes they are all supporting parts, but Messina is an actor who has an impact whether he is in two scenes or twenty. 

supporting_actor_hollywood_reporterIn The Mindy Project Messina plays the curmudgeon of the office, he’s bitter about love thanks to his divorce, but beneath this tough cool exterior Danny cares about his co-works and his job as an OB/GYN.  It’s the playful banter with Mindy and the chemistry between these two actors that kept me watching even when the show was having teething problems. Without this dynamic and his performance I might have quit The Mindy Project midseason, but I’m glad that I didn’t as the show has got both stronger and funnier.

One story that has developed as the season progressed and took a strong turn in the finale is that Mindy and Danny have entered ‘will they/won’t they’ territory. This isn’t a surprise as romantic comedies are an obsession of the lead character and they have the whole love/hate opposites attract thing going on. While this could be a tad early as the friendship between Mindy and Danny has more to give before romantic complications set in, the final scene in the season 1 finale made me forget these reservations for a moment as it was crackling with tension. I’m pretty sure this was thanks to Messina and like Mindy I pretty much held my breath when he took her glasses off.

As I’ve been writing this I’ve had Six Feet Under on in the background because it’s been a while since I’ve seen these final episodes. To come in this late to a show like this and leave an impact is hard, but it’s another case of great chemistry and despite Ted and Claire’s fundamental differences (hey he’s a Republican after all) they work as a couple, particularly after Claire’s other less functional relationships. 

Messina recently took part in a Skype chat as part of the DP/30 Emmy Watch series. It’s a long interview (which you can watch below) as he discusses his days on the stage, his dancing ambition, how he landed the part on Six Feet Under just as he was about to give up on Hollywood and his current role in The Mindy Project.

I have no doubt that Chris Messina would be fantastic in a lead role, but there’s also nothing to suggest that these supporting parts are less worthy. As this Hollywood Reporter piece shows (and the supporting comedy actress panel from yesterday) sometimes these supporting characters are more beloved than the title character.  

To quote my friend and Mad Men conversation partner Kerensa Cadenas the reason why Messina is so versatile and why he leaves such an impression is because he’s a “smart brodawg.” He can play cocky, but he has the intellect and charm to back it up.

Breaking Bad Final Season Teaser Poster

The wait is almost over for the final 8 episodes of Breaking Bad and the first teaser poster has been released; it reveals pretty much nothing, other than it is really the end. Its design is simple and if you’re looking for clues you might have jump down the rabbit hole and enter the Megan Draper is already dead levels of investigation.

breaking bad s5 teaser posterSadly as the poster states “All Bad Things Must Come to an End” and showrunner Vince Gilligan admitted at a panel for the Nerdist Writers podcast (which was benefiting 826LA) that he got emotional writing the final script “I haven’t told my crew this. I actually cried writing the end – ‘The end’ on the last episode.”

As this is the first part of the final promotional campaign for Breaking Bad I like the sparseness of this design and the impact comes from the ominous smoke and lack of characters in the image.

Variety Comedy Actress Emmy Roundtable Discussions

The pre-Emmy nomination roundtables are in full flow and Variety has produced supporting and lead actor/actress discussions in both comedy and drama categories. These panels are all around 15 minutes long and feature actors from both cable and network shows.

Today I am going to focus on the comedy actresses (plus it’s the unofficial Ellie Kemper week here at TV Ate My Wardrobe) and the shows these are the shows that are represented; New GirlEnlightenedVeepSuburgatoryThe Office, The Mindy Project, 2 Broke GirlsThe Big Bang Theory and Cougar Town.  Network and cable shows feature, along with multi-cam and single camera shows. Some of the participants are also involved behind the scenes as Zooey Deschanel is a producer on New Girl and both Laura Dern and Mindy Kaling are creators of their respective shows. Mindy Kaling is also in the writers’ room on The Mindy Project and she mentions that this helps the show be a little more feminist.

The difference in a cable show versus a network one is a lot to do with format and time restrictions; network sitcoms have to be the same length every week, whereas on cable the time can vary by a substantial amount. Network shows have a set commercial break pattern which could stifle the creative element, but all of the shows featured have found a way to work within these parameters.

When they shot Enlightened (which HBO has sadly cancelled) they had all of the scripts for the season written ahead of time, a show like New Girl adds things at the last minute and as both Zooey Deschanel and Hannah Simone mention their scripts often change from the table read to the day of shooting. Simone adds that she is constantly surprised by where they take the characters as they aren’t usually given advance notice of their season long arc. This organic approach has really helped a show like New Girl particularly with the big ‘will they/won’t they’ story in season 2. It isn’t just New Girl that has this style as Busy Philipps’ comments about Cougar Town sound like they share a similar approach. For the shows that are filmed in front of a live studio audience such as The Big Bang Theory it sounds like it needs to be more structured that this. On Veep they workshop the episode ahead of time as this is a process that creator Armando Innaucci favors and the cable format aids this. There is also a discussion about Netflix and how this digital model is even more flexible than both cable and network.

First Look at the BBC’s Elizabeth Taylor/Richard Burton Biopic

We’ve had Lifetime’s Liz & Dick, now it’s time for the BBC’s Burton & Taylor with The Wire’s Dominic West and Oscar nominee Helena Bonham Carter playing the title roles. The 90-minute drama is set in 1983 when the couple were reunited in the Noël Coward’s play Private Lives. The couple had already been married and divorced twice by this point and this biopic will focus on their fractured relationship as it played out in both the private and public eye.

Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor are considered to be one of the most fraught and passionate romance stories of the twentieth century and while Liz & Dick is considered to be mess (see the Fug Girls “Fug the Fromage” for a rundown of how terrible it looks) the creative talent behind Burton & Taylor will hopefully produce a biopic worthy of their story.

In a recent interview with Vogue, Helena Bonham Carter explains that “It’s about two people who can’t live with each other and can’t live without each other. It’s very sad. And very touching.” Bonham Carter tells the magazine that she loves researching a character and luckily for her there is a wealth of information on this epic romance including passionate love letters.

Burton & Taylor airs on BBC 4 and BBC America later this year.

Girls and Downton Abbey Win at the Glamour Awards

The UK Glamour Magazine Awards were held at Berkeley Square Gardens in Mayfair, London last night. A host of stars attended the event that honored women in TV, film, fashion and music. So who were the big winners?

Chris O’Dowd was on hand to present Parks and Recreation star Rashida Jones with the Film Maker of the Year award for Celeste and Jesse Forever (which was one of my favorite films from last year and is currently in my DVD player). In her acceptance speech Jones explains her outfit saying “I wore these pajamas through the entire year since I made my movie.” Jones then followed this up with “I would like to thank Jo Elvin and GLAMOUR for recognising my filmmaking… It’s very fitting for me to be winning an award that is so glamorous, because as everyone knows, it’s very glamorous making an independent movie.” As with Sofia Coppola’s pajama choice at the Met Gala I salute this look; the silk floral Erdem two-piece suits the relaxed atmosphere of these awards. Also Chris O’Dowd is super tall.

The TV Actress category is split into International and UK meaning that two of the most talked about shows received these accolades. Zosia Mamet took home the International prize for her role as Shoshanna on GirlsGirls has received a lot of accolades in the past year but this is the first individual award for Mamet.

Matthew Rhys presented this award and Mamet thanked the UK “for embracing Girls as much as the US has.” Wearing a black Preen dress with floral embroidery Mamet looked very happy posing with her Glamour statue, which isn’t always the case for Mamet on the red carpet. Mamet has been popular with Glamour magazine as she also recently took part in their “These Girls” event in New York.

One show that is just as popular on both sides of the Atlantic is Downton Abbey and so it isn’t surprising that an actress from this show scooped the UK prize. Joanne Froggatt who plays Anna, the head housemaid received this award from fellow Downton Abbey co-star Allen Leech. Froggatt thanked the magazine readers for voting for her adding that is has “made me very, very happy”

Rebel Wilson

It’s been a good year for Rebel Wilson as she has taken the film world by storm with roles in Pitch Perfect and Pain & Gain, as well as hosting the MTV Movie Awards. Wilson will be making the transition to TV in the fall with her ABC show Super Fun Night. Wilson is also the cover star of the new issue of Glamour and she tweeted a photo of it; Wilson is wearing a whole lot of jewels and bubbles and not much else in the shot. Wilson gave fellow Aussie Kylie Minogue a shout out in her speech “Thank you so much Kylie, I just feel so lucky, lucky, lucky, lucky.”

Clare Balding Joan Collins

Presenter of the Year could only really go to one woman and that is the extraordinary Clare Balding after collecting a special award from BAFTA last month. Balding was the highlight of the presenting team at the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and in her speech she mentioned an important current political moment “While here at dinner tonight …the House of Lords voted 2-1 in favour of supporting the equal marriage bill… Joan Collins, who was sitting on my table, asked me when me and Alice (Arnold) are going to get married. Alice said in three years, which I didn’t know but apparently that’s right.” Congratulations Clare!

Kerry Washington and Ellie Kemper at the CFDA Awards

Last night at the Lincoln Center in New York all the big names in fashion gathered for the 2013 CFDA Fashion Awards and they were joined by the models and actresses who wear their gowns on the red carpet. This included Kerry Washington who presented Proenza Schouler designers Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez with the Womenswear Designer of the Year award and Washington looked stunning in a bold yellow Jason Wu gown (the big color of the season). Washington opted for simple hair and makeup to compliment the strong hue of the dress and the wooden clutch is the perfect addition.

Kerry Washington CFDAMy favorite look of the night comes from The Office’s Ellie Kemper in a black Naeem Khan dress with gold starburst embroidery. Pairing this dress with a gold accessories including Rupert Sanderson heels and JustFab clutch could be too matchy matchy, but because they aren’t all the same shade of gold it works. Like Washington, Kemper’s hair is simple and but she works both a strong lip color and bold earrings that create a balance for this look.

photo (3)In the recent comedy issue of GQ magazine Ellie Kemper wrote a satirical piece asking “Can Men Be Funny?” This is in response to the many think pieces over the years asking the same question about women. It includes such wonderful lines as this “Guys, do you want to know a secret? You don’t have to be funny in order to attract us. Believe us, between your scalps and your calves, you’ve already got us. Your narrow, decrescendoing hips, and your soft, very hairy thighs leave us breathless. The truth is, there is no evolutionary cause for you to have to be funny.” It’s obviously a very tongue-in-cheek essay (though some in the comments don’t seem to realize this) and I’m glad that a publication like GQ included it, despite some of the reactions. The “are women funny?” debate is as tired as the “can women have it all?” discussion and pieces like this show how ridiculous that question is.

In the Office series finale Kemper wore one of my favorite dresses of this TV season (and somehow it hasn’t featured on “Look of the Week”) at Dwight and Angela’s wedding. It’s a Ted Baker London floral ‘Wallpaper’ Pleated A-Line Dress and can be seen in this behind the scenes shot.

1368792802_the-office-441I’m really looking forward to see what Kemper does in her post-Office roles, I expect we might see her guest starring on The Mindy Project again but I hope she gets roles beyond the ‘funny best friend’ or the girlfriend who only has 5 lines in an Owen Wilson/Vince Vaughn comedy (though I fear this might be what happens). If we can get some more Subtle Sexuality then I would be more than pleased, maybe with a Taylor Swift twist as with their last outing “The Girl Next Door.”
