Scandal Season 3 Promo Shots: The Storm is Coming

13 Sep

The cast of Scandal took to Twitter yesterday and each revealed their new individual promo shot with the theme “The Storm is Coming.” While it’s hard to exactly measure how much this social media interaction from the cast helps with their ratings, I think it is safe to say that Scandal is one of the most talked about shows on social media and when it returns on October 3 it will be interesting to see if there is a significant increase in the amount of Scandal related tweets. All summer my feed has been full of people catching up all things Olivia Pope (myself included) and so the prospect of the new season is making me a little giddy.

At the end of season 2 the press found out that Olivia is the other woman in Fitz’s life and it was revealed that Olivia’s father is the highly influential B613 boss Rowan, so yes a storm is indeed coming. In the promo world this storm goes from metaphorical to real and the cast get wet to varying degrees and now I’m wondering what it means that some get umbrellas while others get completely soaked – this is probably due to all the past theorizing for shows like Lost or Mad Men where every single detail means something (or nothing at all). When is an umbrella just an umbrella?

Olivia Pope Scandal S3Olivia is probably the one weathering the biggest storm (ok Fitz is probably equal on this matter) and she is the one who is used to fixing other people; what will it mean for the dynamic of Olivia Pope & Associates now that Olivia is the one that needs help? Will she finally open herself up to everyone? Olivia gets an umbrella because of course she is prepared and this amazing Burberry white trench is the very same one I picked for the Olivia Pope Fantasy Costuming piece, a Fantasy Costuming first!

Fitz Scandal S3The bowed down position is reminiscent of the famous John F. Kennedy portrait (recently recreated by Rob Lowe for “Killing Kennedy”). Fitz has a lot to contemplate after the outing of Olivia; is this one scandal too many for this administration to survive? And yes, Fitz gets an umbrella.

Mellie Scandal S3This is my favorite shot from this collection and I like to think she is saying “Come at me with all you have got!” Mellie doesn’t need an umbrella. She’s also dressed in dark colors signifying that she is Olivia’s opposite and we know just how far Mellie is willing to go to keep her place in the White House. Mellie is one of the most interesting characters on the show because she goes beyond the usual Lady Macbeth imagery of whispering in the ear of the powerful man; she has this strength all by herself when he doesn’t listen to her. You can see a glimpse of pearls and this traditional First Lady look is as much her uniform as the white and neutral tones are Olivia’s.

Abby Scandal S3No umbrella for Abby either and this is a pretty sexy shot. It’s been teased that we will be finding out more about Abby’s past and while we know that she was in an abusive marriage, beyond that it’s pretty much a blank slate. Hopefully the same applies to Harrison as his support for Olivia is unwavering; there needs to be a bigger reason as to why he is willing to do anything for Olivia beyond the help she gave with his past legal woes.

David Scandal S3David’s going to be in an interesting position when we return as he has been both the betrayed and the betrayer; this has secured him a huge career bump as the new U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia. Is this going to leave him out in the cold? He has worked with and against Olivia and complications arose thanks to his relationship with Abby; is there hope for this pair? While I enjoyed David as one of the Gladiators, it will be good to see him return as antagonist and sometime friend.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

13 Sep

New York Fashion Week came to a close yesterday (the madness continues today with London Fashion Week kicking off) and so this edition of “Out of the Box” is a front row special.

Ashley

Ashley Madekwe might be exiting Revenge in the season 3 premiere, but she has been doing the fashion show rounds. Madekwe has been running her own style blog for the past 5 years and so her presence at multiple shows doesn’t feel forced or contrived. Out of all the many stunning outfits that Madekwe wore this week, this super pretty bronze/gold beaded dress at Saturday’s Monique Lhuillier show is my favorite. Avoiding the pitfalls of ruining a good dress with too many accessories, Madekwe has also gone for a fresh faced look and it’s stunning.

Allison Williams and Zosia Mamet

Girls co-stars Allison Williams and Zosia Mamet have very different styles and at the Prabal Gurung you can see this in action – Williams is all about the classic and Mamet tends to opt for a variety of looks that sometimes fail to hit the mark. Not so at the Prabal Gurung show where she looks relaxed and stylish. Both are in monochrome – they’re somewhat power clashing but it works and the pop of color on Mamet’s floral top is eye catching. Mamet also looks like she wants to be there, a change from her standard red carpet pose that tends to suggest otherwise.

Kerry Washington Project Runway NYFW

Kerry Washington took a break from filming season 3 of Scandal to perform judging duties at the Project Runway finale fashion show. This is Washington’s third time judging on the show (first for the final) and she looks delightful in this floral Stella McCartney frock. Washington recently wore another fun and flirty Stella McCartney dress at the recent Teen Choice Awards.

Michelle Dockery NYFWMichelle Dockery’s cerulean blue* flared mid-length skirt and beautiful Peter Pan-collar blouse is both stunning and demure at the Carolina Herrera show on Monday and she looks every bit the English Rose. The dahlia bloom print on the shirt is an interesting twist on the many floral interpretations that we have seen this week on both the runway and front row.

*Hard not to think about The X-Files episode “Pusher” when this color is mentioned

Taylor Momsen and Kelly Rutherford

Who knew I was missing Gossip Girl this much that I would not only Fantasy Costume Blair Waldorf but also get excited to see some of the cast reuniting?! It’s as big a surprise to me as anyone, but it was good to see Kelly Rutherford and Taylor Momsen posing together backstage at the Alice + Olivia show. Momsen’s hemline and makeup are not as extreme as we are used to and Rutherford also opted for an above the knee black dress. While Momsen looks as surly as Jenny Humphrey in this shot apparently she was all smiles at the show.

Rashida Jones Opening Ceremony

Rashida Jones rocks a quilted sleeveless floral embroidered top at the Opening Ceremony show and pairs it with a skirt that I wish was currently in my own wardrobe. This is a double pattern success and bonus points are given for a great shade of lipstick. Also is crushed velvet making a comeback? This really must be a 90s revival of the highest order (see the woman in the background).

New York Fashion Week: Fantasy Costuming with the Tracy Reese Spring 2014 Collection

10 Sep

The fall season is upon us and there’s time for one more fantasy costuming entry. At New York Fashion Week the stunning Tracy Reese Spring 2014 collection was unveiled and the press release describes it as “Sensuality, energy and optimism with an array of bold, spirited styles infused with Afro-Cuban influences to create an aesthetic full of texture and movement.” Bold patterns are something of a favorite here at TV Ate My Wardrobe and the blend of gingham, floral, polka dots and stripes alongside vibrant colors makes this a NYFW highlight.

Instead of picking one show or character we will be following the Burberry Prorsum model and opt for multiple shows and characters. These designs will appeal to a variety of demographics and narrowing the selection down to this amount was a challenge. Reese has used the vibrancy of Havana as an inspiration point and she told The Huffington Post that “The classicism that harks back to the 50’s and even the street culture today is melded and merged — young and old, black and white, everything in between. And everybody’s just enjoying the rhythm.”

Tracy Reese Spring 2014 collection

The first fantasy costuming piece we did was for Jess from New Girl and we tried to mix up Jess’ wardrobe by opting for a more monochromatic look. This colorful polka dot dress is quintessentially Jess; it’s super cute and the cut is incredibly feminine (if you click on the photo you can see the detail). The patterned neckerchief is a beautiful addition and this is my favorite look from the new Tracy Reese collection.

Tracy Reese

I love everything about this; the bright orange hue, the contrasting gingham blue pajama like pants, another great scarf and the bonus backpack with textured looking straps- I’m definitely having a backpack phase at the moment. This is something I can see Mindy wearing on The Mindy Project when she wants to look a bit more casual but also super stylish. Mindy doesn’t tend to wear pants all that often (when she’s not in scrubs or sweats) but I could definitely envision her in something like this.

Tracy Reese red and black stripes

While the henna tattoo is probably not something you would see on The Good Wife’s Alicia Florrick (unless she drank all the wine) this form fitting stripped dress is more her style. Alicia tends to color block her clothes and patterns don’t tend to feature, but as she is now setting up her own firm we might see Alicia switching out some of her standard suits and dresses for something a little more adventurous.

Tracy Reese white

I dipped in and out of Revenge last season as the conspiracy grew into a giant mess; the cliffhanger in the finale is enough to bring me back for now and this white floral dress embodies the picture of innocence that Emily tries to project while she is plotting her REEEEEEEEEVENGE.

Tracy Reese crop top

The full bodied skirt is one trend that I will definitely be embracing this season and while I’m not really a crop top fan, I can totally see Carrie from The Carrie Diaries rocking both of these looks. Yes the show is set in the 1980s, but the costuming has a tendency to pay homage to that time period without worrying about accuracy. This isn’t as bright as some of the other pieces but it is definitely as bold with the big floral print.

Tracy Reese lounge

Olivia Pope would probably not opt for the black and red striped top – though I’d love to see a flash of color in her wardrobe even if it goes against her ‘uniform’ – but those white pants with the black trim detail are perfect Olivia Pope lounge wear. This is where she eats popcorn and somehow doesn’t manage to spill red wine down herself, a feat I am constantly impressed with.

Tracy Reese lapels

On Parks and Recreation, April Ludgate is off to veterinary school and while we’ve already picked out some costuming for her next season this is another back to school look for April. This is probably a slightly more girly look than we are used to seeing, but it doesn’t stray into the bolder palette of this collection and more muted tones are an April staple. The bonus backpack features one of April’s favorite colors – mustard – and will be ideal for all those books she’s soon going to be carrying.

Tracy Reese flowers

On Arrow the Oliver, Diggle, Felicity team is the most fun aspect and while this dress might be outside of Felicity’s usual floral jersey dress comfort zone; it would be perfect for an undercover mission that gets Felicity out from behind the computer and into the field again. It’s super sexy and the embellished detail on this dress is stunning.

Tracy Reese blue

On New Girl Cece’s wardrobe tends to swing between form fitting bodycon when they go out and far less constricting baggy pants and vest when they are lounging around the loft. The above Tracy Reese combination is maybe a little out there for Cece but it would look stunning on her regardless and the two very different types of floral embellishment is power clashing at its finest. She could also donate the gingham strapped backpack to Jess for the new school year.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

6 Sep

The summer is coming to an end and the new fall TV season is just around the corner; this means more TV stars on magazine covers, red carpet and chat show appearances. September also means multiple film festivals with Venice taking place already and TIFF started yesterday. New York Fashion Week also kicked off yesterday so expect a lot of appearances from TV stars promoting their shows from the front row. This is the month where it all gets a bit crowded and while it can sometimes feel like information overload, I love it.

Winner: Eddie Izzard and Sidse Babett Knudsen for the Zulu Comedy Awards

Sidse Babett Knudsen and Eddie Izzard

The Zulu Comedy Awards are Danish and Borgen star Sidse Babette Knudsen appears alongside actor and comedian Eddie Izzard. While this award show hasn’t been on my radar before I am so glad that this photo popped up on my Facebook feed (thanks to Scanoir) as it brings me so much joy. We are used to seeing Knudsen in the serious role of Prime Minister Birgitte Nyborg but she played host at this comedy awards show. As you can see from the above photo Eddie Izzard seems very taken with the compare and she is striking a rather amazing looking fierce pose. Last year as part of a roundtable discussion I gave Sidse Babett Knudsen my performance of the year and I can’t wait to see what she does next as Borgen has now ended in Denmark (I still have season 3 to watch). While I would like to see her tackle comedy, seeing her with Izzard has me longing for a Hannibal guest starring role.

Runner Up: Kerry Washington Covering Flare Magazine

Kerry Washington Flare

Kerry Washington has scored another magazine cover (she’s also covers Glamour’s October issue) and this really is the year of Olivia Pope. The great thing is that none of the editorials look similar and this is something that is reflected in Washington’s red carpet choices; there is always variety. Olivia Pope has her defined uniform of white tailored pieces with flashes of other neutral tones whereas Kerry Washington is happy to experiment. The pink polka dot Miu Miu coat is striking (and on my infinite wish list) and this is the second magazine cover editorial that has opted for this collection (Michelle Dockery’s Harper’s Bazaar cover went for the stripped Miu Miu coat). Is a Vogue cover next? Here’s hoping.

Runner Up: Jack Huston at the Boardwalk Empire Season 4 Premiere

Jack Huston Boardwalk Empire Premiere

Boardwalk Empire returns in just over a week (Sunday, 9) and it’s a show that has one of the richest aesthetic looks. The sprawling nature of the world that these characters inhabit means that favorites such as Jack Huston’s Richard Harrow are sometimes sidelined for too long. When Harrow did come into play last year it was as devastating and brutal as his story has always been and I’m pleased to hear that season 4 will see Harrow explore his past; will he find his sister? Jack Huston does an excellent job of transforming himself into this character that goes beyond the tin mask; his speech patterns and posture are just as important. Red carpet appearances reveal how handsome he really is and not anyone can pull off a moustache like that.

Runner Up: Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson at the Venice Film Festival

Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson

First of all let’s rejoice once again that Joshua Jackson has scored himself a Showtime pilot as the new season hasn’t even started and I’m sad that he won’t be gracing our screens. Diane Kruger has been doing an exceptional job on The Bridge – there’s this amazing thing she does with her eyes when she’s trying to explain Sonya’s issues with connecting with people that breaks my heart every single time – and I’ve been generally very impressed with this adaptation.

The pair hit the red carpet in Venice for the Jaeger-LeCoultre Gala Dinner (a brand that Kruger is the face of) and while not everyone can pull of such a heavy looking velvet gown, Kruger looks extraordinary in the purple Alberta Ferretti dress. There is something regal about it without appearing too much like a fancy dress costume and this is aided by the minimal accessories and simple hair and makeup. Josh Jackson looks pretty dapper, even with the injury that means he’s wearing a support rather than a shoe (also in black).

Who is your look of the week?

Happy TV New Year and Turning Another Year Older

3 Sep

September feels like the start of a new year and for TV it is as the fall season is about to begin. September is the month that I associate with new beginnings – it was always when the academic year started and even though my post-grad finished several years ago I’m still very much in that mindset. Do you know how much I want to go out and get new stationary even though I don’t need it?! Fashion is another industry that holds this month in high regard as the September issue of magazines marks the biggest publication of the year (yes they hit newsstands in August, but there’s no mention of that summer month in the title)  and New York Fashion Week kicks off on Thursday.

The photos dotted throughout are the characters who I often ask “What Would ______ Do?” This selection of inspiring female characters will provide life lessons, fix things, teach me how to wear white without spilling, organize Galentine’s Day, support me with my cheese habit and show me how to wear ’90s fashion all over again.

Leslie Knope

There’s a personal reason why September always feels like the perfect time to reassess and look to the new as it also happens to be when my birthday is (yeah I’m making this all about me). It’s time to finally accept that I am no longer a twentysomething and that I am too old to be a Millennial and too young to be Gen X; where are all the think pieces about the generation in the middle and how we ruined everything? I want my Time magazine cover.

[Source]

While I’m experiencing the standard apprehension about where I am and what I am doing I also wanted to take the moment to write this perhaps overly emotive post (hey it’s the internet what else am I meant to do?) to see that I am actually doing fine.

Tami Taylor and wine[Source]

TV Ate My Wardrobe has been in existence in this form for almost 5 months and when I started it I had some idea of what I wanted it to be – a place to talk about TV, costuming and fashion. There are so many incredible outlets that feature terrific writing about TV and it’s such a competitive market it can be tough to break through and carve a corner of one’s own. While I still have far to go before I can hail this venture a success, it’s been a personal triumph as my confidence has grown. Of course there are days when I think it’s all pointless but then a new idea will strike and it all seems worth it again. Or I’ll find out that one of my Scandal costuming picks is actually something that has been used in the forthcoming season (*spoiler* it’s the white Burberry trench).

MSCL ep7 The Smile

A lot of thanks has to be given to the many new friends I have made in the TV and writing community on Twitter and for the opportunities this has given me. Without This Was TV I wouldn’t be able to relive my sometimes embarrassing teen years while talking about My So-Called Life and Freaks and Geeks. This is soon to include the sometimes awkward university years as Julie Hammerle and I will be moving onto Felicity later this month. It turns out conversation pieces are a lot of fun and here I will be continuing the Summer Rewind project (even if it’s pretty much autumn) with Kerensa Cadenas and we will be joined by Julie to talk all things Scandal before the new season begins.

Olivia PopeWarning this is where I get even more sentimental as I want to say thanks to everyone who has been reading; whether it is one article or if you visit on a regular basis it has made this experience more worthwhile. There is one person who encourages me on a daily basis even when I starting doubting the words I write and they get a huge thank you and this support means everything.

For the final word I will leave you with Nick Miller and I can’t wait to start writing about New Girl again when the new season returns. Here he is with a notion that I am going to try and listen to as I turn another year older.

Scandal Soundtrack Preview: Music For Gladiators

28 Aug

Chop Shop Records have produced some of my favorite TV soundtracks – including the recently discussed The O.C.Gossip GirlChuckMad Men and The Carrie Diaries. They’ve also produced some pretty topnotch ones for films and while I’ve never been particularly fond of the Twilight series, the music made up for my lack of love triangle intrigue. Now they are releasing music that has featured on Scandal and it’s a collection of songs that has a heavy ’70s influence with a smattering of new music.

Scandal Soundtrack

Scandal creator Shonda Rhimes has worked with Chop Shop Records and music supervisor Alexandra Patsavas on both Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice and there’s something to be said about striking the balance between angst and upbeat in a show like this. A soundtrack is important in establishing tone and can enhance the narrative elements; as we have seen on Scandal there is plenty of drama and the pacing is something that is propelled at times by the music.

This is why a track like KC & the Sunshine Band’s “Get Down Tonight” is just as important as “The Light” by The Album Leaf. Both songs feature in the HUGE episode “Nobody Likes Babies,” an episode that marked the voter fraud story coming to a head and all of the characters facing the consequences of their actions. Plus Fitz did something very bad.

The reason I have picked these two songs is because one represents the way they use music to show the associates sifting through information (on this occasion conversations between Abby and David) and the other is all about Olivia and Fitz (and a eulogy). Even though I’m not Fitz’s biggest fan I’m not immune to the chemistry between the pair and “The Light” by The Album Leaf is a haunting and touching piece of music.  It is used later in the season in the episode “Seven Fifty-Two” and has become a love theme of sorts for Olivia and Fitz; repetition with songs in this way is a good way of giving cues to an audience with no dialogue necessary. You can listen to both tracks below.

If you follow Chop Shop Records on Twitter you will have seen that they are doing a countdown to the release of the soundtrack with other tracks that have featured on the show but didn’t make the playlist. It’s a shame that only 12 songs make the list as there are some really great songs that are missing. This is the benefit of sites like Spotify as you can make your own Scandal playlist to accompany the official one.

The Scandal soundtrack is released Tuesday, September 3 and for a full list of the songs used on the show (including episode and scene) head here.

New “Scandal” Season 3 Poster

20 Aug

The Scandal cast took to Twitter and promised that the season 3 poster would be unveiled if they hit 10,000 combined retweets. This target was hit with ease and Olivia Pope herself, Kerry Washington posted the photo (which you can see below) on Instagram – it’s all about multi-platform social media for this cast.

While the image doesn’t tell us anything new, it does show Olivia Pope looking less defiant and the tagline reveals why as “The Secret is Out.” This works on two levels; her affair with Fitz is now public knowledge and Rowan has been revealed to be Olivia’s father. The first piece of information is something the audience has known since the pilot, whereas the identity of Olivia’s father was the big twist at the end of season 2 – I let out a very big WHAAAAAAT at this reveal. This is a side of Olivia that we haven’t seen before; we are so used to seeing her fixing everyone around her and now she is the one with the huge predicament.

There is a hint of white that is one of the costuming cues for Olivia Pope and this suggests that she isn’t out of this fight and while the image for season 2 featured Fitz, this one is all Olivia.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

9 Aug

The Television Critics Association Press Summer Tour was the focus of the last edition of “Out of the Box” and featured a whole host of different shows. This week we are going to celebrate the women of a show that we have talked about a lot this summer here at TV Ate My Wardrobe and that is Scandal.  Kerry Washington has dominated the discussion so far thanks to her performance as Olivia Pope and her impeccable style as Olivia and on the red carpet. At the ABC Disney TCA party on Sunday the Scandal women all looked incredible this whole post is dedicated to them.

Winner: Darby Stanchfield

ABC TCA Summer 2013 Party

Much to my delight full skirts feature big in 2013 F/W collections and this Alexa von Canisius jacquard floral-print pleated skirt that Darby Stanchfield is wearing is beautiful. Pairing it with a simple black silk top and black pumps lets the skirt be the centerpiece of the outfit. As Abby on Scandal Stanchfield’s amazing red hair is often straighter than straight so the tousled approach instantly separates her from her character. A bold lipstick also compliments the whole look and while a bracelet might add something, the lack of accessories also stops it from becoming cluttered.

Runner Up: Kerry Washington

Kerry Washington TCA

Kerry Washington’s orange and white Giambattista Valli dress from the Resort 2014 collection is fun take on pattern clashing. The paisley pattern on the top combined with the scribbled detail on the skirt could like a magic eye illusion (it’s a boat) but thankfully this unlikely pattern pairing works. Kerry Washington likes to dabble in a variety of styles on the red carpet and this is why I could write endless red carpet posts about her; she never sticks to the same one designer or approach and has a good time with the clothes that she wears. Both her Christian Louboutin pumps and Nancy Gonzalez clutch are in neutral tones that don’t distract attention away from the dress, plus she has one new piece of jewelry as Washington got married in June.

Runner Up: Bellamy Young

Disney & ABC Television Group's "2013 Summer TCA Tour" - Arrivals

More floral goodness as Bellamy Young wears a super summery frock from Elie Tahari, paired with a thin yellow belt. I’ve got so used to seeing Bellamy Young in her traditional First Lady clothes that feature a lot of bold primary colors and pastels but not much pattern so this is a huge departure. Mellie’s hair is normally styled to perfection and when she wears it down her curls have a certain rigidity, here Young’s hair is allowed to be free and she looks like the kind of woman I would want to have a cocktail with (actually I’d really love to have a bottle of wine or two with Mellie as she’s become one of my favorites on Scandal).

Runner Up: Katie Lowes

Katie Lowes TCA

Katie Lowes is wearing the only non-patterned dress and even though mint green is everywhere this summer, this ICB dress feels like it could be a work outfit – an amazing work outfit but it makes me think office more than party. The white blazer is serving up Olivia Pope related thoughts and while it isn’t terrible overall it lacks the summer freshness of her co-stars. There is one aspect of this look that trumps the rest of the Scandal ladies and that is the incredible color-block Oscar de la Renta pumps.

Kerry Washington Tops Vanity Fair’s Best Dressed List

1 Aug

Kerry Washington is the cover star of the August issue of Vanity Fair and she also features in the new September issue of the magazine as she tops their International Best-Dressed Poll. Taking over from last year’s winner Kate Middleton (who has probably been occupied with other matters recently), Washington continues to have an excellent 2013 as she is taking both the acting and fashion world by storm. Olivia Pope has helped raise Washington’s profile as Scandal has become one of the most talked about shows thanks to the fast-paced plotting, twists, strong performances and the incredible costuming. It helps that Washington’s style on the red carpet is just as striking as it is on Scandal; sometimes opting for the Olivia Pope monochromatic look and also embracing bold and bright colors that Olivia’s wardrobe does not feature.

Here are a few of my favorite red carpet appearances by Kerry Washington this year and as you can see she likes to take risks with color, patterns and style. The Michael Kors yellow train dress from the 2013 MTV Movie Awards might not be to everyone’s tastes but I think it’s the right side of daring fashion and Washington pulls it off without looking overwhelmed by it.

Fantasy Costuming Fall 2013: Dressing Olivia Pope

23 Jul

TV Ate My Wardrobe’s Fantasy Costuming series took a brief hiatus and now that all of Scandal has been consumed it’s time to turn to one of the most talked about characters currently on TV. Olivia Pope is an interesting figure beyond her clothing of course, but aspects of her wardrobe set her apart from the usual Washington D.C. power suits and the lack of navy and red makes her stand out from the political crowd. Scandal costume designer Lyn Paolo isn’t a stranger to the White House scene as she worked on The West Wing. Even though they share a location Scandal is far removed from the that version of politics and creator Shonda Rhimes told Entertainment WeeklyI feel like The West Wing brought us Washington as we’d all want it to be. And this show brings us Washington as we hope it would never be.”

The costuming of Olivia Pope is far removed from Aaron Sorkin’s politic world (Mellie would probably fit right in as her First Lady pieces are pretty traditional). The first thing that is striking about Olivia is the amount of white she wears and this intentionally reveals several things about how she wants to be perceived – she’s the good guy, she’s not on the red team or blue team and there is a calming presence to her limited and neutral color palette.

Kerry Washington recently tweeted “I’m CRAZY excited about this #Scandal fitting that I am about to have with @LynPaolo – like giddy butterflies kinda excited. Wow” and so to fill in the time between now and the new season we wanted to find some potential outfits for Olivia Pope from all corners of the internet both high end and more affordable. For those who might love Olivia’s wardrobe, but might not want that much white in your wardrobe then we’ve got a few pieces for you. The gowns that Olivia wears are impressive (and sometimes one of a kind) but we’ve decided to focus on work and lounge wear.

French Connection Olivia Pope

French Connection A/W ’13

Feminine tailoring is a key factor when it comes to the Olivia Pope look and this “Pop Dot Woven” jacket and matching pants from French Connection is an affordable way to deliver this sharp style. This outfit creates the all important silhouette and uses the key tones that we see in Olivia’s office wear. The contrast piping breaks down the polka dot texture, as do the black lapels, cuffs and pocket details on the jacket which help give it a structured appearance.

Burberry Spring 2014

Burberry Prorsum S/S ’13

Out of all of Olivia’s amazing clothes it’s not her incredible gowns that we here at TV Ate My Wardrobe covet (though we wouldn’t say no), instead it’s her vast collection of coats that take our fancy. Washington D.C. can get rather chilly in the winter (both the weather and politically) and so it’s only appropriate that she has so many. While we’ve already seen Olivia in a traditional Burberry trench, this more embellished “Double Duchess Caped Trench Coat” from Burberry Prorsum adds a modern twist with the canopy cape. While costume designer Lyn Paolo has said they try to avoid anything that is too catwalk, this version of the Burberry trench maintains the traditional look and enhances it without being too showy.

Carven mint-green

Carven

Mint green works on the Olivia Pope color spectrum and these Carven double crepe pants might be from last season (now on sale with more than half off) but pastel colors are here to stay and feature in collections for the fall. Olivia has worn green before in a slightly warmer shade than this in the episode “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot” that saw a 10 month jump and showed Olivia trying to move on with her life (and failing to do so).  Hopefully if she was to opt for green again it would be under better circumstances; judging from how season 2 ended this is unlikely.

Maison Martin MargielaMaison Martin Margiela MM6

Not only does Olivia have a vast array of coats, but her lounge wear collection is also pretty impressive. Olivia is just as happy at home on the couch eating a bowl of popcorn and drinking red wine as she is fixing things and this grey oversized cape cardigan from Maison Martin Margiela MM6 is perfect. Luxurious knitwear seems like the worst idea as it’s super hot at the moment but come the fall when Scandal returns this won’t feel like such a ridiculous idea.

Reiss

Reiss A/W ’13

Another office look for Olivia and this one maintains feminine and slim-cut styling, while also featuring a harsher edge thanks to the “Ezra” leather skirt. This wouldn’t be the first time we have seen Olivia in leather as she has worn olive leather leggings in the episode “Seven Fifty Two” (paired with a Burberry trench) and of course there are those many leather gloves. Black leather gives off a strong impression but pairing it with the “Mimi” frill neck and sleeve top offers a soft compromise. Olivia is going to have new challenges when Scandal returns so it is likely that her costuming will evolve.

Would these outfit choices get the Olivia Pope approval?
