Oh, Hello 2016! Resolutions, Weddings and Peak TV

4 Jan

As this is the first post of 2016 it is time to shake off those writing cobwebs and look to the year ahead after spending so much time looking at the one we just had. I’m not one for specific resolutions and September feels as much like a new start as January does (for more on that read this), but there are some things I want to think about in terms of what is to come and what I would like to do in this shiny new year.

First of all this is going to be a huge year for me on a personal level as I am getting married this year. This means I have to finally stop calling watching marathons of Say Yes to the Dress ‘research’ and actually get out there and find a dress. I’m not someone who has all the details of this garment or day planned to a meticulous level (far from it) and I knew that going from “I’m getting married next year” to “I’m getting married this year” would definitely cause momentary panic.

April and AndyThere is still a lot to plan and I know my strengths do not lie in this kind of organizing, luckily the guy I am marrying is much more adept in this area; however I have to remember that there is also much for me to do beyond flicking through a few magazines or making jokes about getting inspiration from Marnie’s forthcoming wedding on Girls. I’m sure there will be more on this during the year (including dress photos after the day) and while it does feel very daunting, I also can’t wait.

SerenaThen comes the career* orientated resolutions and turning my general weekly note to myself that I need to pitch more to outer outlets into an actual thing. TV Ate My Wardrobe is the safe space in that it is mine and I can come here and just post whatever. There’s no emailing, waiting and worrying about rejection. This blog is something I am incredibly proud of, but I also know that I need to push myself more and stop getting in my own way. The underwear piece I did for Flavorwire is one of the best writing experiences I have ever had; I got to talk to three incredible costume designers and while it was nerve wracking it was also very rewarding. I need to do more of that and by writing about this on such a public forum I hope to remind myself that pitching is something I should be spending more time doing. I was better at doing this stuff in 2015 than I was in 2014, but there is still ways to go.

*Note – Using this photo of Serena when she had assumed Gossip Girl blogging duties because of how similar her writing attire is to mine (because who doesn’t wear that many necklaces while typing) and because I found that storyline way more amusing than I probably should. I also spent way too long on Netflix looking for this screencap so I had to use it.

Some other things are just generally related to TV habits and pretty much remembering there is no way to watch everything, because #PeakTV. Sometimes it feels like you are missing out on what everyone is talking about, but there are not enough hours in the day to watch every single BIG show.

Last week I started both Making a Murderer and Mr Robot with one being a much talked about show over the summer and the other being the hot topic over the festive break. Staying up to date is kinda important when writing about something like television, but there is also no point in stressing out over the ever growing list of ‘must see TV’ (feeling so NBC 90s right now).

While I’m on the subject of TV to watch in 2016 there are some old shows on the list including Gilmore Girls which I need to get back to for TV Rewind (and because those first two episodes made me want to watch a lot more) as I know my co-writer in all of this, Julie Hammerle is now definitely ahead of me. I blame the two shows I mentioned above for derailing my plans to watch more over the holidays. There are also things like Outlander which is very much at the top of the “To Watch” list before the new season begins. Also the stack of books I got for Christmas would very much like to be read (along with the other stacks sitting on my bedside table – pretty much need Hermione’s time turner necklace or the About Time power). Plus there is the exciting X-Files revival and other favorites such as The Americans and Broad City returning in the next few months.

So here’s to an exciting year and one I can’t wait to share with you all!

NYFW Fantasy Costuming: Rachel Antonoff Fall 2015 for Girls

14 Feb

The first Fantasy Costuming of 2015 courtesy of New York Fashion Week and Rachel Antonoff’s Fall RTW 2015 collection is a mixture of subversive whimsy. Scrolling through the photos it became clear rather quickly that this selection is ideal for the characters on Girls. There is a preppy edge to some of the pieces; which is perfect for both Marnie and Shoshanna, plus Hannah has a tendency to lean this way.

Even as the characters on Girls continue to grow up they can fall back on old tendencies which is why the provocative edge of some these pieces is dream wear for Hannah. And she has definitely worn something that resembles pajamas while out and about cycling in Iowa. A family connection is also present as Rachel Antonoff’s brother Jack is dating Lena Dunham and Hannah has already worn Rachel Antonoff on the show including some very lovely shoes in season 2. As always the Fantasy Costuming selections are inspired by the costume design from the show in question – Jenn Rogien- and are in no way suggesting this character should wear a specific item mentioned.

Rachel Antonoff ovariesA sweater with the female reproductive system pretty much screams Hannah as it is comfy and a little daring. Of course Hannah and Lena are not the same person, but it is pretty safe to say they hold similar views on the reproductive rights of women.

Rachel AntonoffContinuing the tradition of Hannah wearing very cute dresses on occasions such as at Jessa’s wedding, her birthday, dinner with her parents and after she got her first big paycheck with this floral offering. For more Hannah picks check out the gallery at the bottom of the page.

Rachel Antonoff pleatsPleats and tartan for Shoshanna as a reaction to marathoning Outlander and trying to find her very own Jamie. Shoshanna is the one who changes her look the most dressing with a theme or occasion in mind.

Rachel Antonoff cropAnd this is more party wear for Shosh with a matching polka dot crop and skirt number.

Rachel Antonoff RTW 2015Marnie is trying to do the whole boho folk singer thing but we all know she is a preppy girl at heart.

Rachel Antonoff summer dressAnd here is something for Marnie and a return to the beach house for the sophisticated bonding trip she desired. Okay that probably won’t happen but she can still wear this is flirty girly frock.

Rachel Antonoff maxi dressBotany is one of Rachel Antonoff’s points of reference here and Jessa has been known to rock a hippy-esque maxi dress (okay maybe to hide Jemima Kirke’s pregnancy).

Check out the gallery below for more looks for Hannah from Rachel Antonoff’s Fall 2015 collection and stay tuned for more NYFW Fantasy Costuming.

Best of TV Costuming 2014: Best of the Rest – From Statement Necklaces to Wedding Gowns

30 Dec

Welcome to TV Ate My Wardrobe’s “Best of 2014″ costuming series and rather than doing a straightforward countdown we’re going to do a variety of posts that look at which costumes and shows have made a huge impact this year. From items that we want in our own wardrobe to pieces that got everyone talking, we want to look at this year’s TV through the prism of costume.

So far the end of year “Best of” discussions have covered a lot of individual shows such as The AmericansHannibal and The Good Wife, along with certain trends such as leather jackets and now comes the quick-fire roundup of TV Ate My Wardrobe’s best of everything else such as accessories, special occasion gowns and even modes of transport. It is a chance to address some our favorite shows and looks of 2014.

Best Statement Necklace Wearer

The Good Wife 6.02 DianeThere can only be one winner of this and The Good Wife’s Diane Lockhart wears chain necklaces like no other. She also has a very fine collection of antique broaches/pins and a stare that can stop you dead in your tracks.

Best Fancy Hat

Hannibal - Season 2Freddie Lounds take on court attire was even better than Hannibal checking out his own butt as he got ready for Will’s trial. This hat reads more day at the races or wedding and isn’t really court appropriate unless she is starring in a remake of His Girl Friday.

Best Casual Hat

IMG_0770I never thought I would pick a trucker hat to appear on a ‘best of’ but Orphan Black managed to turn one into a symbol of love as Helena shared her first dance and smooch with the adorable Jesse. This love token has been dropped and all she is left with is a beanie to stuff her hair into.

Best Sunglasses

You're the WorstI can’t believe this is the first time I am talking about You’re the Worst on TV Ate My Wardrobe and Gretchen’s face in the shot above sums up how ridiculous that is. Plus her Ray-Ban Opal Yellow Wayfarers are super awesome and perfect for all kinds of hungover sunny days.

Best Sweaters

Gina B99 Wolfie sweaterAnother slam dunk as Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Gina has excellent sweater game week in, week out including an excellent double wolfie turtleneck from the most recent episode. There might have been more competition if Robyn hadn’t mysteriously become a character who exists in the off screen wilderness on The Good Wife.

Best Tights

SelfieNobody does patterned tights quite like Selfie’s Eliza and now is also a good time to sadly bid adieu to yet another comedy show that was the perfect mix of funny, sweet and sharp. So long Eliza and Henry; you deserve more than this.

Best Bathrobes

IMG_1161Going from the sanitized hospital location with the stiff blue robes to something more decadent with quality hotel bathrobes and in Masters of Sex’s best episode this season “Fight” Bill and Virginia spent a rather sizable portion laying their souls bare while wearing this garment.

Best Late Night Drinking

HomelandOkay so this one isn’t about what a character is wearing, instead it is the manner in which this scene in the Homeland finale showcased the best of what has been a mostly very enjoyable season leaving behind the mess of almost all things Brody. There’s an initial awkwardness from Lockhart that turns into a moment of warmth thanks to a shared horrific experience and drinking whiskey from paper cups.

Best Mode of Transport Part 1

IMG_1160Lucy’s beautiful blue bike wouldn’t look out of place now as retro bicycles are on trend and it also symbolizes freedom for both Lucy – she doesn’t have to rely on a man for transport – and Thack as he experiences a non-drug induced pleasure when he takes it for a spin on The Knick.

Best Mode of Transport Part 2

The Comeback 2.08The Comeback has been a pleasure to experience even when watching through fingers or with constant Home Alone face and the season finale is just as exceptional. Valerie Cherish is my everything especially when she has to avoid a shit covered front yard and gets carried in her Emmy gown by a shirtless Brad Goreski and her publicist Billy.

Best Hoodie to Hide in

Broad City 1.08 drawstring hoodieThere is a lot to love about the costuming on Broad City and one of Abbi’s most practical pieces is this drawstring hoodie (as with April Ludgate’s mustard hoodie I am still on the hunt for it) which doubles as a Bevers blocker.

Best Dress for Time Travel

Otlander Claire blanketConfession – I still need to watch beyond episode 3 of Outlander and it is one of those shows that I just fell behind on. Claire’s 1940s simple white keyhole dress didn’t seem totally out of place for the 18th century time period she found herself in during the pilot and this allowed her to blend in as best she could without betraying the original post-World War II setting. I really need to catch up on this, don’t I?

Best Wedding Gown

Margaery GOTAnother wedding didn’t go so well (or it actually worked out better for the bride) on Game of Thrones, but that can’t take away from the exquisite beauty and detail of Margaery’s gown. The rose embellished train is stunning.

Best Business Wear

BBC2 drama The Honourable WomanOn The Honourable Woman Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Nessa Stein has a wardrobe that contains endless billowy silk blouses and everything is super chic and well tailored. Pieces that stand out include the Roland Mouret leopard jacquard dress from the first episode and pretty much every item acts as some kind of armor between Nessa and the messiness of the world she is part of. Yep even those silk blouses represent both supreme business wear and a way to protect herself.

Best Pattern Clashing

IMG_1014Mindy wins this one hands down.
