The Return of Will Graham’s Glasses on Hannibal

12 Jun

When Will Graham was released from the Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane he underwent a change in style or a makeover if you will. He ditched his signature glasses and switched to a more tailored look as he mimicked Hannibal’s refined sartorial choices without entering plaid suit territory as Dr. Chilton made the mistake in doing. Last week’s Hannibal premiere featured Will Graham in name alone, but fear not as “Primavera” shifts the focus back onto Hannibal’s favorite companion (the knife to the gut might not agree with this assessment).

When we last saw Will he was left bleeding profusely while attempting to stem the blood spurting out of Abigail’s neck and the opening moments this week revisit this traumatic moment. Hannibal plays with reality and fantasy in its structure and it has done since the opening scene of season 1 when we first experience seeing a crime through the mind of Will Graham. This episode spends a lot of time within Will from his mind palace realization pointing him to Hannibal’s location to everything involving Abigail. Will’s glasses are an important costume choice which not only represents Will’s past and time with Abigail, but how he uses them to shield himself from the world.

Hannibal 3.02 Will GlassesHannibal doesn’t like to kill its characters, well not the recurring cast anyway so when Abigail walked into Will’s room alive and well there was a small part of me that took it at face value. I mean if Doctor Chilton can survive having his insides taken out and getting shot in the face then who is to say Abigail couldn’t live through two deep cuts to the throat? Except there is always a sense from the outset that she is not really here; other than the doctor with the tea cup filled with water no other person acknowledges her and who is to say this moment in the hospital was real? Or maybe Will had another visitor all together. The return of Will’s glasses 8 months later when they venture to Norman Chapel in Palermo, Italy signifies a barrier being put up between him and the world.

Hannibal 3.02 Pazzi and WillInspector Rinaldo Pazzi is introduced this week and he has also been chasing Hannibal; his has been a long one spanning 20 years and while the broken heart symbolism is for Will alone there is significance for Pazzi who has been witness to Hannibal’s murder tableau making ways. Will’s glasses remain on for their first few meetings once again acting as a shield of sorts.

Hannibal 3.02 Will eyeEven going so far as wearing them in the black and white flashback as Will visualizes Pazzi’s encounters with Hannibal or ‘Il Mostro’ as he refers to him. This feels very much like season 1 Will and the presence of Abigail heightens this further.

Hannibal 3.02 Hannibal photoA brief interlude and oh, hello photo of Mads Mikkelsen from 20 years ago* that Pazzi shows Will. Another occasion where a show uses a real photo instead of a terrible photoshop version joining The Americans on my list of shows that do this well.

*Update – on Twitter Bryan Fuller notes that this is a photo from Mads Mikklesen’s Danish show Rejseholdet “with the hair from our production designer Rory Cheyne for a younger look.” Rejseholdet aired between 2000-2004 making it shy of the 20 years mark so the hair switch makes sense. Also this now falls under ‘good photoshop’ because this very much looks like his hair.

Hannibal 3.02 this is my design spaceAt the crime scene Will removes the glasses; first in his vision of how the body came to be which then turns into a twisted nightmare of the shell of Dimmond combined with the good old fashioned Hannibal stag imagery. Quick observation time – this is a perfectly okay beast to show on TV:

Hannibal 3.02 stagBut when it comes to art certain things have to be blurred out to get through Standards and Practices. Network rules confuse me a lot.

Hannibal 3.02 blurred buttsThe repetition of this notion that there is “some other world” where things have turned out in a different manner is a direct clue that Abigail is all in Will’s mind. If he could change things he would and there is a version where “no one had to die.” At this point we still don’t know whether Alana or Jack is alive, but the previews and promo photos suggest they both survived, but without this clarification there is still the chance that they are referring to either one of them. Alas it was always going to be Abigail as the sacrificial lamb; she is Will’s punishment for his deception and the breaking of the tea cup. Abigail’s appearance is different from how we have seen her in the past as her clothes are more grown up as if she has been given a chance to live and mature.

Hannibal 3.02 Abigail and WillSaying goodbye is hard to do, even when the person is not really there and it is important that Will takes the glasses off breaking the spell. The only place Will could make for Abigail is in his head and he did this in the past when he thought she was dead the first time. Fishing peacefully was how he pictured it before and there is a flash of this as it is revealed what really happened with Will after he was stabbed; he sees Abigail’s dead body lying on Hannibal’s floor and this is followed by a sequence which cuts between Will in the hospital and Abigail in the morgue. It is heartbreaking, but Will can’t hold onto this delusion if he wants to find Hannibal even if it is unclear what Will is going to do if and when he finds him. Despite what has transpired his loyalty is vague and his declaration of forgiveness could be seen as sincere or as another trick to draw Hannibal out. Whatever it is this high stakes game of cat and mouse has a way of drawing multiple players in.

It has been said many times and yet it is worth repeating that Hannibal is a show like no other on TV at the moment and there are a couple of other visual moments I would like to discuss.

First Will Graham’s mind palace as he discusses Hannibal’s own imaginary construction of this name.

Hannibal 3.02 bedBy placing the hospital bed between the two chairs which are steeped in so much history between Will and Hannibal it not only holds a strong emotional connection, but also points to a version of this show that no longer exists. It is unlikely we will see them in this location again (flashbacks/imagination aside) and yet it is definitely not the last time they will be sitting opposite each other.

Hannibal 3.02 paperAs paper rains down Will experiences the burning session and the moment Hannibal realized Will had deceived him (he smelt the not dead Freddie Lounds on him). For Will it gives him the clue as to where Hannibal might be hiding. Not that Hannibal is really hiding as we saw last week.

For Alana and Bedelia inky water consumes them whether through choice or as a kind of poison. Will’s experience in Hannibal’s kitchen leads to a different kind of drowning as he is consumed by the blood of Abigail, the stag and his own deep wound.

Hannibal 3.02 Will Graham blood Hannibal 3.02 kitchen Hannibal 3.02 Will drowningAs Will sinks down into the depths he is alone and his face cannot be seen; the shot is not quite as bleak as Alana’s entire consumption, nor is at romantically lit as Bedelia; once again placing Will Graham in the blurry point between going to Hannibal and wanting to stop him. Just what will he do when they finally comes face to face?

Hannibal’s European Vacation: Why so Blue, Bedelia?

5 Jun

“You seem more interested in making appearances than maintaining them.”

Morality, ethics and aesthetics are all covered in the first back and forth between Hannibal and Bedelia in the season 3 premiere of Hannibal, which takes place after a decadent party and Hannibal flexing his prowess through Dante and dance. Appearances are important and maintaining his cover seems like less of a concern when measuring egos and playing a game of cat and mouse with whatever person lies before him. These encounters include talk of fairy tales – Hannibal lives on the opposite end of the fantastical spectrum which Pushing Daisies also inhabits – playing the game of ‘how many times can you say ‘bonsoir’ before you kill someone?’ or giving a dinner guest delicacies to make them taste better.

Willing participants are hard to find and part of this season opener starts to explore why Bedelia is Hannibal’s European vacation (can it still be called a vacation if you are technically on the run?) partner and what her motivations are.

Hannibal 3.01 Bedelia in blueProfessional curiosity is a term which has been used on Hannibal in the past including Alana citing this as reason why she couldn’t get romantically involved with Will Graham back in season 1 as she didn’t think she would be able to stop analyzing him. Curiosity is also something Bedelia cites on several occasions and it is like she hasn’t heard the well known phrase involving a feline. When it comes to making appearances Bedelia stands out in a crowd and the blue ensemble which I have been clamoring to see within the context of an episode was unveiled in “Antipasto” and it resembles the most incognito spy from the 1940s. Covert is not a word either Bedelia or Hannibal are considering when picking out their attire first thing in the morning and they are sartorially suited to each other.

Hannibal 3.01 policemanOther than the carousel which lights up the shot, Bedelia is the only one wearing color in the square full of people with the local policeman taking note of her in a big way. He isn’t suspicious and instead gives her a flirtatious salute; he is not going to forget the woman in blue.

Hannibal 3.01 eye Hannibal 3.01 CCTVBedelia is also caught on camera and this one seems kind of deliberate as she stares directly at the CCTV ‘eye’ while she is at the train station. Being enveloped in Hannibal’s world limits escape options as we witnessed in the house of horrors at the end of last season and everyone who came at Hannibal in his home were left broken and bleeding. Bedelia wants to flee attempting to do so later in the episode, but her curiosity coupled with her darkness that Hannibal has tapped into gives her a reason to stay. Even if she knows that ultimately she will end up on Hannibal’s plate.

Hannibal 3.01 Bedelia in goldBathed in gold light in this twisted fairy tale life and coming home from the ball temporarily breaks the spell; giving Bedelia the opportunity to question Hannibal’s motives. Despite the warm light there is something incredibly icy in this scene as both circle around the other talking as if they are still in a therapy session. At the same time there is an intimacy which is evident in the way Bedelia asks him to unzip her dress (the same dress from these stunning promo photos).

Flashbacks reveal how Hannibal and Bedelia ended up on the plane together as her residence is where he cleaned off Will, Abigail and Jack’s blood. Hannibal is all about equal opportunities bathing and Bedelia had the opportunity to end it all when she pointed her gun at him as he stood their naked; instead she went for option number two with a fun packed trip to Europe. The why of this comes from the other jump into the past and the aftermath of her patient attack and subsequent murder (oh hey Zachary Quinto!) with Hannibal’s manipulation going according to schedule. He wipes her bloody brow and gets her to ask for his help while unlocking the darkness in her.

Hannibal 3.01 showerThese revelations come after the bath of sinking into the depths and water is hugely symbolic on Hannibal. Will Graham’s ‘mind palace’ fishing sessions rest on water as cleansing and calming, but water also signifies how something can envelope. As Bedelia drifts down she is doing so out of choice and at this point she is a willing participant, well as willing as you can be with Hannibal who is a master manipulator like no other.

Hannibal 3.01 Bedelia bathIt is important that we can still see her in this shot as it represents some level of choice in how she floats downwards. The look of Hannibal is unlike any other show on TV and as Bedelia lets go she is lit up as if she is a figure on a renaissance painting and the light of heaven shines on her as she sinks into hell. Considering this is on network TV I am surprised to see something like this get through S&P, but maybe the ethereal atmosphere somehow trumps nudity (nipples have been erased/are not free on this occasion).

Hannibal 3.01 Bedelia bath drifting

Yes she pulls out of the water with a shocked look on her face and it is this part of Bedelia that chooses to flee from Hannibal; albeit an unsuccessful attempt as she gets splattered with blood once again. Despite her assertion that she is observing, this is not something you get to do when Hannibal is involved and participation is a necessary requirement. It just might not be one you are conscious of.

Bedelia’s bathtub trip echoes Alana Bloom’s envelopment by inky water in the season 2 finale with one important difference as instead of sinking into it, Alana is consumed from the bottom up and we can’t see any of her below the surface.

Hannibal 2.13 Alana“All I see is dark swarming behind my eyelids. I dream darkness comes into me. It comes and it is insidious. Up my nose, into my ears. It comes and I feel poisoned.” Bedelia is bathed in light as she drifts further down whereas Alana is consumed by the horrors of Hannibal’s crimes and her blindness to them.

Hannibal 2.13 Alana darknessIn Hannibal’s flashbacks we see his time with Gideon in black and white. While no one can replace Will Graham as Hannibal’s favorite companion it doesn’t stop Hannibal from auditioning others or at least finding a temporary substitute. Even after he has helped consume two of his own limbs, Gideon is rather zen about everything that is taking place – the crimes he committed shows he is not of sound mind – and gets to the heart of the matter reflecting on Hannibal’s desire to eat with company and not just eating the company pointing to Will as his dream dinner date. Even a cannibal yearns for companionship.

How soon will Bedelia outlast her stay? Maybe she should stop eating the oysters.

Hannibal Season 3 Promo Photos Include Costume Changes Galore (Super Spoiler Warning)

12 May

The end of Hannibal last season was a bloodbath with four characters lying on the floor in and around Hannibal’s residence with various life threatening injuries while Hannibal ditched Baltimore for pastures new with his former therapist, Bedelia. Hannibal returns in just under a month (June 4) and so the promo department has gifted us with some cast photos from the new season.

Now this is where the SUPER SPOILER WARNING comes in as by all accounts these photos reveal who survived the traumatic events, but there are too much incredible costume changes in these shots to wait a whole month before I can discuss them. So I’m going to kick off with a pair who were the only ones not bleeding and broken at the end of last year.

Hannibal S3 Bedelia and HannibalServing up so much poise and pretty much making me want to bow down right now; what a power couple! The focus of this campaign including the recently released promo is this relationship between Hannibal and Bedelia with #BrideofHannibal as the nifty Twitter friendly hashtag. Are they married? Well certainly in how they present themselves to unfortunate dinner guests and this dynamic is one I can’t wait to see explored further.

Bride of HannibalSpeaking of ‘the bride’ Bryan Fuller shared this incredible poster on Twitter with Gillian Anderson serving up so much Marlene Dietrich realness as Dr. Bedelia du Maurier.

Hannibal’s costuming is still full of style and flair; swapping out the plaid for a range of different pattern and he’s even got a new leather jacket for his European wardrobe (which you can see in the gallery below). Hannibal gets a little bit more sartorially flashy when he’s on the run it would seem. No laying low here.

He’s not the only one changing up his look in the new promo photos as Alana’s colorful prints have been replaced with black hinting at how much her relationship and subsequent horrific breakup have impacted her. Ah yes so this is the spoilery stuff I was talking about as three out of the four house of horror victims all appear very much alive. Abigail is nowhere to be seen so it is safe to assume this was one throat cut too many. Or like Chilton she might have many lives and because she’s not a regular she doesn’t get a spot in these pictures. I am leaning towards the first option as the more likely. There are two batches of promo photos; one in the ornate and decadent Italian looking location with the second half doing the plain background thing (click on the gallery below for a better look).

The Alana plaid suit image is exciting – I actually yelped with joy when I saw this photo for the first time – for a number of reasons; she is wearing pants which is a huge departure for her usual ultra feminine wrap dress/pencil skirt styling. And even more notable is the choice of pattern because plaid instantly conjures up images of Hannibal. Is she emulating his style as a way to get into his mind and help track him down? Sometimes the clothes worn in promo photos are simply for this purpose alone, but Alana’s green ensemble from her season 2 shots ended up featuring in a pivotal moment for this character’s journey last season and I have a feeling this plaid pantsuit is not just for the promos.

Alana suffered a great deal last season as Hannibal’s champion; she was the one who insisted that he was innocent and she also had a romantic relationship with him (the unpleasant names Alana got called in comment sections was nauseating). By putting her in this position of Hannibal believer she ended up looking incredibly naive and I hope this season goes to some lengths to rectify this narrative stumbling block. I wrote about both her costuming and the season 2 Alana problems at length here.

Over season 2 Will’s costuming evolved from his usual slightly rumpled style to tailored coats and a more polished appearance as he mimicked Hannibal’s fancier attire (but never so far as delving into plaid suits). In these new photos he looks halfway between the man he was and the man he is now. The smart blazer remains, but we see the tailored coat ditched for a style that is more reminiscent of Will circa season 1. Also worth noting is the continued absence of the glasses Will used to hide behind.

We could also split the two photos up by calling one set fancy and the other work threads. Jack in the second collection is also dressing a little bit like Hannibal; his jacket nods to the style we are accustomed to seeing on Hannibal. Gone are the hat and the ties, appearing a whole lot less FBI.

And there is a new character joining the promo photo ranks with Tao Okamoto as Chiyo (Lady Murasaki’s handmaid). Interesting choice of attire in the second half of the photos as she looks prepared for swashbuckling while teaming up with Will. I’m sure I will have a lot more to say about this character after she makes her first appearance, for now I am very excited to see another woman joining the team.

Watch the new promo and check out the gallery below for a detailed look at the costume changes. Hannibal returns

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

23 Oct

Welcome once again to Behind the Insta-Scenes! A new feature offering a roundup of the best behind the scenes photos posted on Instagram from a variety of TV show and personal accounts from the people who are on them. This includes anything from future episode sneak peeks, what’s airing this week, flashing back to the past and general on set (and sometimes off set) antics.

This week we’ve got a whole array of photos ranging from press day outfits, a shout out to Spirit Day, prop hair (and where it is stored) and a maybe flashback hairstyle.

Dressed all in purple for Spirit Day and somewhat suburban crime duo Alison (Tatiana Maslany) and Donnie (Kristian Bruun) are rocking this color alongside Orphan Black co-creator Graeme Manson.

Before the excellent and super smutty Hannibal PaleyFest panel Mads Mikkelsen, Hugh Dancy and Caroline Dhavernas took part in a gif reaction Q&A of sorts for the official Hannibal Tumblr. They also had a Will and Hannibal Funko doll on hand and some mini white boards to deliver messages to fans.

New Girl wasn’t on this week, but we do have a teaser from Hannah Simone. If the shorter ‘do is anything to go by I think we could be getting a Hannah Simone (rather than the younger actress who plays Cece and looks exactly like Hannah Simone) featuring Cece at school flashback.

Oh, hello! Kroll Show will be back for a third season soon and this Comedy Central post suggests the return of Gil and George. Will there be too much tuna once again?

Mindy Kaling’s press day attire is just as cute as her Mindy Lahiri’s threads and these Piamita separates are a delight.

Watch out when you go looking for strawberries on the set of The Walking Dead as you might end up with your hand in a bag full of Rick’s beard hair.

The third Rookie yearbook was released yesterday and the ladies from Broad City are showing off their featured pages. Having bought the previous two editions, I can say that I will definitely be picking this up even if I’m still a smidge older than the demo.

It Starts with a Crisp Clean Shirt: Previewing the Hannibal Season 2 Finale

21 May

In a couple of days we will find out exactly how Hannibal goes from looking like this

Hannibal 2.13 food prep

To this

Hannibal 2.13 two knivesWe’ve seen the start of the fight and the bloody mess it turns into, however that’s only a fragment of the story and there’s so much left unanswered at this point. The big question is who will make it out alive – I mean, Hannibal and Will are a given, but we don’t know what state they will be in or how free they will be when those closing credits hit. The outlook is less positive for Jack as he has been viciously stabbed in the neck after the kitchen trashing fight and Alana brandishing the gun Will gave her makes an appearance in the promo (which you can see below). Alana’s been put in a shitty position for the second half of the season and while I wouldn’t say she needs to redeem herself, I would like to see her regain her agency and kick some ass.

Can they also explain Hannibal’s shirt tucking in super powers? Other than the blood and ruffled collar he still looks pretty dapper. He’s going to be so pissed that he didn’t have enough time to fetch his plastic kill suit and now this shirt is beyond saving.

It’s like the most fucked up “will they/won’t they” as Will makes his final choice; whose love will he choose?

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

18 Apr

Switching up “Out of the Box” this week and moving away from the red carpet and magazine editorials with a Hannibal special using last Friday’s episode “Yakimono” to discuss some of the various looks this season and how costuming has been utilized to show a shift in character temperament. The repetition of a wide shot showing two characters sitting opposite each other is something of a Hannibal signature and this is presented in this episode with a slight shift that stops short of being a callback to the season 1 finale. Plus someone has had a makeover (sadly no montage).

Hannibal 2.07There’s been a variation of this set up throughout Hannibal whether it is in a therapy session or as prisoner/friend. Hannibal has even sat opposite the empty chair revealing just how much he has been missing the friend he framed for murder. Even Hannibal, no matter how twisted the reasons for any of his deplorable actions has the capacity to miss someone. The chair is filled once again as Will is free and he wants to resume his sessions, the very sessions that were used to manipulate his brain that was already on fire (like a messed up Katniss). The framing of these scenes suggests some kind of equilibrium, which of course in the past was a lie as Will was very much at Hannibal’s mercy. The balance has shifted and while Hannibal is still in control, he’s now facing a previously unknown entity; a Will Graham with all of his facilities working and a desire to hook to Hannibal for good. The game has been upped and this simple, yet effective shot signals this new stage in the Hannibal vs. Will battle.

Hannibal 2.07 Alana and ChiltonWhen Alana sat opposite Will in the season 1 finale in a room very similar to this one we saw them facing each other in a wide shot. Not so in this case with Alana and Chilton and this shows just how alienated Chilton is at this point. Alana is not here to be his confidant, though I suspect her personal involvement in the case makes her presence a tad messy. My fear for Alana, now she has slept with Hannibal is that for the rest of the season she will act primarily as a “Hannibal is innocent” mouthpiece and this character deserves more than the role of blind faith advocate. Costume wise this is the most unlike Chilton we have seen as he wears the orange of prison and Alana is very much in her signature wrap dress attire. Chilton gets shot in the face, but Bryan Fuller has hinted this doesn’t necessarily mean death for this character.

Hannibal 2.07 Chilton at homeSo how did Chilton end up going from pristine and flamboyant plaid to jumpsuit orange? Let me show you how and first of all I want to mention just how audacious Chilton’s costuming has been this season as it mimics the plaid of Hannibal. Chilton wanted to be like Hannibal and now he is, well in the crimes he is accused of. This shot also gives a good look at Chilton’s spacious home which is bathed in light as opposed to the dark decor of Hannibal’s home.

Hannibal 2.07 Chilton and HannibalThe moment of realization as Chilton lies at the feet of a plastic kill suit wearing Hannibal as he shows the perfect “Oh fuck” face, he can’t even bask in the glory of being right. At this point Chilton’s suit is still looking rather dapper even as he lies on the floor…

Hannibal 2.07 Bloody ChiltonCut to all the blood and there’s no way he’s getting those stains out.

Hannibal 2.07 ChiltonNow this is the most Chilton has looked like Will as it’s a more subdued approach, Hannibal sure picked out a suave on the run outfit in the bags he helpfully packed. The red and black pea coat does lose cool points as Chilton scrabbles around in the snow covered wood. Hat tip to Raúl Esparza for the amazing and hilarious performance he has given this season, even in Chilton’s darkest moment he still got the funniest line of the episode “Abel Gideon was half eaten in my guest room, I have corpses on my property. You just threw up an ear.”

Hannibal 2.07 Hannibal plastic kill suitYou know who always looks good? Yep, Hannibal once again shows how to make a plastic kill suit (which has to be bespoke) stand out, that’s right wear your regular suit (plus pocket square) underneath. No muss, no fuss.

Hannibal 2.07 Will unwashedNow we come to the before and after as Will shows off his post prison “I don’t really give a shit how I look” look. Bedraggled hair, untidy beard and the plaid of before, plus a nifty vest which could almost double for his fishing attire. To catch a fish the second time it means scrubbing up so please welcome the new, slightly less hairy Will Graham.

Hannibal 2.07 Will close upWill’s wearing a lighter, single color shirt as if he is free from the constraints he has been in both mentally and physically; there’s a renewed confidence we haven’t really seen before and this makes him an unknown entity to both Hannibal and us. Having a haircut and trimming his beard show that he isn’t going to slink away into the darkness and the power balance has shifted to an even playing field. One thing that is notably missing are Will’s glasses and this is something I chatted about with Noel Kirkpatrick on Twitter and he pointed out the lack of glasses makes sense as Will previously used them to mask his face, now he wants to “seduce” Hannibal so the glasses are no longer required.

Will GrahamThe new more polished Will Graham look continues with tonight’s episode “Su-zakana” with this rather fancy looking wool coat and scarf combination. It’s like a halfway point between Jack and Hannibal; I really want to see what he has on under the coat (unintentionally pervy turn of phrase).

Hannibal Season 2 Trailer: “You’re not a Suspect. You’re the New Will Graham”

6 Feb

Hannibal showrunner Bryan Fuller asked “who’s ready for seconds?” over on Twitter and my hand pretty much shot up into the air. This new trailer (complete with a somewhat jarring movie style voiceover) expands on the idea that Hannibal is taking over Will’s spot as FBI consultant on the macabre cases. The new promo also features Gillian Anderson’s Dr. du Maurier and it was insinuated last season that she knew more about Hannibal than she was explicitly saying out loud; it looks like she might be one of the only people who isn’t fooled by Hannibal’s charms this season.

Hannibal season 2 groupThe male characters on the show are blinded by Hannibal’s charm and sophistication, sitting at his dinner table and enjoying whatever treats Hannibal has prepared for them (THE FOOD IS PEOPLE). This was the role that Will took on last year, he is now of course very aware of what Hannibal is capable of and he’s going to have a hard time of convincing people otherwise. Dr. Chilton has recovered enough from his non-elective surgery last year to discuss Will over food with Hannibal “He tells everyone that you are a monster.” Hannibal responds mockingly “Well in that case you’re dining with a psychopathic murderer.” It’s all very tongue in cheek (pun maybe sorta intended).

There’s more of the fight sequence that was teased in the first full trailer and seeing Hannibal shift from cool and reserved to cool and dangerous is unnerving and I can’t wait to see this sequence in full. The one person lacking in the trailer is Alana Bloom, though the first trailer revealed that she is part of this confrontation. Alana is very much on Team Will, but she’s also got a very long standing professional and personal relationship with Hannibal so I am intrigued to see what they have in store for her. As long as it’s not an untimely end.

Beauty and horror go hand in hand on Hannibal and the crime scenes are as complex as ever as there’s a brief shot of what appears to be a judge missing the top of his skull, set up to look like the scales of justice. Just because Will is aware of his condition it doesn’t mean there won’t be stag sightings and it’s not just going to be Will in his cell either as you can see from the new promo; there’s the courtroom and his imagination.

I was already beyond excited about season 2 and all the promotional work is raising the anticipation bar even higher. Hannibal returns to NBC Friday, February 28.

Best of TV Costuming 2013: Pattern and Color on Hannibal

18 Dec

Continuing TV Ate My Wardrobe’s “Best of 2013″ costuming series and rather than doing a straightforward countdown we’re going to do a variety of posts that look at which costumes and shows have made a huge impact this year. From items that we want in our own wardrobe to pieces that got everyone talking, we want to look at this year’s TV through the prism of costume.

The first season of Hannibal premiered in April and from the outset it produced some of the most visually stunning episodes on TV this year. As with the character, Hannibal’s costuming is rich, textured and multilayered. Hannibal is also the only show to appear as part of “Look of the Week” as a piece of set design, rather than just costuming.

Hannibal 1.01 HannibalStarting with the titular character everything that Hannibal wears is meticulous and well tailored. Costume designer Christopher Hargadon predominantly dresses Hannibal in three piece suits (often in plaid) and the elaborate quality reflects Hannibal’s desire to have only the finer things in life. There is an element of control with everything that Hannibal does and yet he also likes to play with his environment and this includes his wardrobe.

Hannibal 1.11 HannibalPattern clashing is in abundance and this style choice is featured in pretty much every episode. There is nothing accidental about the pocket square matching the teal shirt and the colors of Hannibal’s suits are incredibly rich, even in their darkness. On this occasion Hannibal is wearing paisley with plaid; it’s bold and distinctive much like Hannibal. Dark earth tones are a signature and you won’t see him in bright primary colors. As the season progresses, his suits get even darker to mirror just how far Hannibal is pushing Will’s mental state.

Hannibal 1.08 dishevelledEven when he has been in a full on dirty fight to the death, as he has in “Fromage” he still looks relatively well put together. His pocket square has been ruffled and his tie is at an angle, however this all plays into his act of being in shock. If he wasn’t playing this role there is no doubt that he would have straightened these up and fixed his hair.

Hannibal 1.13 HannibalThe use of shadow with bold patterns means there are moments like this one in the season 1 finale where the only detail visible is Hannibal’s striking tie and grey shirt. He kind of looks like a floating head coming out of the darkness.

Hannibal 1.13 BurberryThis moment also comes from the finale as Hannibal visits Will in his new ‘home’ and the brown Burberry London coat (thanks Wear the Rude for the heads up) is part of the rich brown trend that Hannibal wears throughout the first season. Hannibal is littered with out of the shadows moments and this shot is framed as if Hannibal is the emerging victor.

Hannibal 1.10 kill suitHannibal even has what looks like a custom kill suit and when you have clothes as luxurious as Hannibal you don’t want them getting ruined by a spot of blood. There’s also the evidence factor of course.

Hannibal 1.09 Alana and AbigailThe color scheme on Hannibal is as precise as Hannibal’s suits and there’s one character who wears both bold tones and a whole lot of pattern and that’s Alana Bloom. I’d argue that Alana is the heart of the show as she is the only person who is looking out for Will’s best interests all of the time – in the pilot she talks about the dangers of putting Will in the field as he might get too close and this is exactly what happens.

Hannibal 1.09 AlanaThe variety of prints Alana wears could represent her confused romantic feelings towards Will; she wants to be honest with him and lets him know in the scene above that she can’t have an affair with him while he is this unstable. Whereas both Hannibal and Jack will manipulate Will to get what they desire, Alana is suppressing her desires for the good of Will.

Hannibal 1.08 Will and AlanaThis is the nearest Will gets to rom-com set up and for once his demeanor is only reading at 30% troubled. Part of this is the company and Will takes the step in “Fromage” to get the girl. While this doesn’t entirely pan out – this is Hannibal and not a sitcom after all – if Will does get better there’s a chance these two kids could give it a go. While a lot of their interactions are bathed in darkness in lecture halls and interrogation rooms, the lighting in this open field scene gives a glow of hope. Will is dressed in his outdoor wear and he’s far removed from his usual work attire, the beanie is a win for him. Alana’s wine colored coat and patterned scarf maintain both her signature style and palette.

Hannibal 1.13 orange jumpsuitFrom light to dark and all color has been saturated from this scene except for Will’s jumpsuit and Alana’s multicolored Diane von Furstenberg wrap dress. This scene contains one of my favorite exchanges as Will tells Alana “I could use a good scream. I can feel one perched under my chin… I’m afraid that if I started, I wouldn’t be able to stop.” Control is a big element of Hannibal; Will thinks he losing all of his whereas characters like Hannibal and Alana have a full sense of who they are and their working boundaries. This is why they are the two characters who wear pattern and prints throughout the first season. Alana gets bonus bright colors because she wears her emotions on her sleeve.

Hannibal 1.01 Will GrahamWill wears red and plaid in the pilot but as the season progresses all color drains from his wardrobe and it’s pretty much all grey. At a push some earthy tones pop up, but Will’s costuming is all for practical and functional reasons. There’s nothing flamboyant and he even uses his glasses as prop to hide his eyes from the world.

Hannibal 1.02 FreddieNot afraid to make an impression is Freddie Lounds and this all scarlet ensemble dares to clash with her red hair and the walls of Hannibal’s waiting room. Freddie is essentially one of the many devils of Hannibal and like Hannibal himself she likes to manipulate dangerous situations to see how it impacts the outcome.

Hannibal is far more than just another antihero/murder venture and it is elevated beyond these stale factors thanks to the meticulous details in the writing, acting and all facets of the production design including the incredible costuming.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

21 Jun

This week we are moving away from award shows and pre-Emmy nomination roundtables, instead we are going to take a look at Mad Men and Hannibal. These are the two shows that have dominated the discourse over the past few weeks and feature casts that are stylish both on and off camera. As always there are no real rules to this weekly column and it is a snapshot of what I have been watching (and looking at online) and each pick is for a variety of reasons including; what it adds to the storyline, what it tells us about the characters involved or simply because it looks good. Spoilers for the Hannibal season finale ahead.

Winner: Mads Mikkelsen in GQ’s July Issue

MadsHannibal Lecter is one of the best dressed characters on TV (even his killing attire looks tailored) so it isn’t surprising to see him in a GQ fashion spread. Hannibal’s costuming often mixes a variety of patterns with his suit, shirt and tie; it’s power clashing at its best and automatically makes him a commanding presence in any situation. After the season 1 finale Will Graham can finally see Hannibal for who he is, but Will is not in a position to be heard as he is in the one place he feared he would end up; the Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane.

Runner Up: Dr Alana Bloom and Will Graham on Hannibal “Savoureux”

Hannibal finale Hannibal finale Dr BloomDavid Slade directed the pilot and the third episode “Potage” and returns for the Hannibal finale. The shots above are almost completely devoid of color, save for the two figures who are bathed in darkness. This technique has been used throughout the season and in moments like this allows the viewer to focus on the dialogue and emotion of the scene as everything threatens to envelope Will Graham. Alana Bloom is one of my favorite characters on this show; in part because she is the only person who is truly looking out for Will and his well being, she also provides Will with a tether to the world. These factors also work against how this character is used; they’ve had to keep her away from Will (and not just in a romantic sense) so he can turn to Hannibal and the manipulation can continue.

Showrunner Bryan Fuller spoke to E!Online about Alana and her role next year “I think Alana will have a bigger role in season two. Because not only will she be representing Will psychiatrically in the trial, but struggling with her feelings for him romantically. She was falling for a guy that she knew to be unstable. She was keeping him at bay and now her worst fears have come true that not only is he unstable but apparently he’s capable of great violence. Her need to rescue him may be amplified.” Alana is the emotional center and Caroline Dhavernas’ performance in the finale showed this range from screaming in her car to trying to remain composed in the above scene. From a costuming perspective her red and white wraparound dress not only stands out from the darkness that threatens to consume them, but it also repeats this color combination that has been favored throughout the season.

Runner Up: Glen Bishop on Mad Men “The Quality of Mercy”

MM_612_JA_0402_0384

Creepy Glen is no longer all that creepy, even if his army coat covered in Stop the War buttons reeks of a teenager attempting to be part of the counterculture while not indulging beyond smoking pot (though it wouldn’t surprise me if we saw Glen at an anti-war rally). The plaid shirt underneath shows that he’s not heading for the complete hippy route yet and at least he avoids the sandals of his friend Rolo. Glen loses his creepy edge thanks to defending Sally’s honor and losing out on a hook-up of his own in the process with the 1968 version of Britney Spears in the “Hit Me, Baby, One More Time” video. Sally was exaggerating how much Rolo was forcing himself on her and it looks like she has definitely picked up on her mother’s manipulation skillset and her smile during the fight showed this new side of Sally. After walking in on her father sleeping with Sylvia it isn’t surprising to see Sally develop an edge and the drinking and (supervised) smoking in this episode is probably just the start of a downward spiral.

Runner Up: Linda Cardellini at the Clinique Party

Linda Cardellini

While Sylvia has been a problematic character on this season on Mad Men and it’s easy to dislike the direction in which the show has taken Don Draper and his infidelity, I’m always glad to see Linda Cardellini on TV. I’m currently watching Freaks and Geeks for This Was TV and so it’s been strange to switch between a young Cardellini in a high school show set in the ’80s and as a mother of teenager in the ’60s on Mad Men. Despite any negative feelings towards Sylvia (and I have many) this red Carmen Marc Valvo dress that Cardellini wore to the Clinique Party is stunning. The contrast between the red flowers and black patterned mesh side panels gives a striking silhouette and pairing it with a simple pair of peep-toe black pumps really sets off the look.
