Out of the Box: Look of the Week

6 Sep

The summer is coming to an end and the new fall TV season is just around the corner; this means more TV stars on magazine covers, red carpet and chat show appearances. September also means multiple film festivals with Venice taking place already and TIFF started yesterday. New York Fashion Week also kicked off yesterday so expect a lot of appearances from TV stars promoting their shows from the front row. This is the month where it all gets a bit crowded and while it can sometimes feel like information overload, I love it.

Winner: Eddie Izzard and Sidse Babett Knudsen for the Zulu Comedy Awards

Sidse Babett Knudsen and Eddie Izzard

The Zulu Comedy Awards are Danish and Borgen star Sidse Babette Knudsen appears alongside actor and comedian Eddie Izzard. While this award show hasn’t been on my radar before I am so glad that this photo popped up on my Facebook feed (thanks to Scanoir) as it brings me so much joy. We are used to seeing Knudsen in the serious role of Prime Minister Birgitte Nyborg but she played host at this comedy awards show. As you can see from the above photo Eddie Izzard seems very taken with the compare and she is striking a rather amazing looking fierce pose. Last year as part of a roundtable discussion I gave Sidse Babett Knudsen my performance of the year and I can’t wait to see what she does next as Borgen has now ended in Denmark (I still have season 3 to watch). While I would like to see her tackle comedy, seeing her with Izzard has me longing for a Hannibal guest starring role.

Runner Up: Kerry Washington Covering Flare Magazine

Kerry Washington Flare

Kerry Washington has scored another magazine cover (she’s also covers Glamour’s October issue) and this really is the year of Olivia Pope. The great thing is that none of the editorials look similar and this is something that is reflected in Washington’s red carpet choices; there is always variety. Olivia Pope has her defined uniform of white tailored pieces with flashes of other neutral tones whereas Kerry Washington is happy to experiment. The pink polka dot Miu Miu coat is striking (and on my infinite wish list) and this is the second magazine cover editorial that has opted for this collection (Michelle Dockery’s Harper’s Bazaar cover went for the stripped Miu Miu coat). Is a Vogue cover next? Here’s hoping.

Runner Up: Jack Huston at the Boardwalk Empire Season 4 Premiere

Jack Huston Boardwalk Empire Premiere

Boardwalk Empire returns in just over a week (Sunday, 9) and it’s a show that has one of the richest aesthetic looks. The sprawling nature of the world that these characters inhabit means that favorites such as Jack Huston’s Richard Harrow are sometimes sidelined for too long. When Harrow did come into play last year it was as devastating and brutal as his story has always been and I’m pleased to hear that season 4 will see Harrow explore his past; will he find his sister? Jack Huston does an excellent job of transforming himself into this character that goes beyond the tin mask; his speech patterns and posture are just as important. Red carpet appearances reveal how handsome he really is and not anyone can pull off a moustache like that.

Runner Up: Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson at the Venice Film Festival

Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson

First of all let’s rejoice once again that Joshua Jackson has scored himself a Showtime pilot as the new season hasn’t even started and I’m sad that he won’t be gracing our screens. Diane Kruger has been doing an exceptional job on The Bridge – there’s this amazing thing she does with her eyes when she’s trying to explain Sonya’s issues with connecting with people that breaks my heart every single time – and I’ve been generally very impressed with this adaptation.

The pair hit the red carpet in Venice for the Jaeger-LeCoultre Gala Dinner (a brand that Kruger is the face of) and while not everyone can pull of such a heavy looking velvet gown, Kruger looks extraordinary in the purple Alberta Ferretti dress. There is something regal about it without appearing too much like a fancy dress costume and this is aided by the minimal accessories and simple hair and makeup. Josh Jackson looks pretty dapper, even with the injury that means he’s wearing a support rather than a shoe (also in black).

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

16 Aug

Red carpet appearances continue to dominate Out of the Box over the summer; this isn’t to say that the costuming on individual shows such as Breaking Bad and The Bridge hasn’t been brilliant – having Skyler and Walt in clean creams and whites to signify that they are simply car wash owners at the moment is a nice touch and I think we should all “have an A1 Day!”

This week has appearances from film screenings, the Teen Choice Awards and a Hollywood Foreign Press Association luncheon.

Winner: Keri Russell at a New York Screening of Austenland

Keri Russell NY Austenland Screening

I tend to loathe any form of jumpsuit or playsuit so it comes as pleasant and total surprise that I find this Stella McCartney one so appealing. One aspect that really stands out is how simple it is in both style and color (it’s black). The Saint Laurent studded booties that you can see peeping out the bottom are perfect, as is the plain clutch as neither added anything too fussy to the minimalist styling. The flash of hot pink both on Keri Russell nails and lips gives the outfit the pop it needs and hair envy is definitely on the menu.

Runner Up: Kerry Washington at the Teen Choice Awards

Kerry washington teen choice

A  change of pace and a look that is in contrast with Keri Russell’s; both are Stella McCartney creations. This is the Teen Choice Awards where the hemlines are shorter, the colors are brighter and it’s an opportunity to wear something a little more fun. It’s a cute dress that works perfectly for this setting and because Kerry Washington likes to mix it up on the red carpet (or blue on this occasion) this is a great look for her. Choosing a bold lip color that mirrors some of the lip illustrations on the dress and wearing her hair down in a relaxed style enhances the outfit choice. Bonus points for a great pair of sparkly Louboutins.

Runner Up: Diane Kruger at the HFPA 2013 Installation Luncheon

Diane Kruger Carven

Yes this Carven dress is plaid and yes it has pockets (if a dress has pockets I’m 77% more inclined to buy it) and so this was always going to be a look I love, especially with Diane Kruger as the one wearing it. It’s slouchy which works for the luncheon setting (you should see what I wear to lunch). I’m not totally on board with the strappy shoes but thankfully they’re not nude pumps. Kruger’s hair and make-up matches the relaxed attitude of her pose and the lack of accessories is preferable on this occasion as they might clutter rather than accentuate.

Runner Up: Olivia Wilde at the HFPA 2013 Installation Luncheon

Hollywood Foreign Press Association's 2013 Installation Luncheon

Olivia Wilde is rocking Solange favorite Clover Canyon and it’s hypnotic without overwhelming; like going on a kaleidoscope journey. The green shoes/bag combination could be considered too matchy matchy but I like the way it mimics the green on the dress and two different colors it might go the bad clashing route. This is why Wilde’s fresh faced, simple up do approach looks great as it creates balance with the beautiful chaos of the dress – somewhat related here is a really brilliant look at the the dichotomy between sexy and smart in profile pieces featuring Olivia Wilde.

Diane Kruger’s “Where Beauty Begins” Chanel Video

8 Aug

Diane Kruger first appeared in a Chanel campaign in 1996 for Allure fragrance and in April it was announced that The Bridge star would represent Chanel’s skin care range. Kruger has been a Karl Lagerfeld favorite for a long time; they met when she started modelling at 16 and are now neighbors in Paris. It’s this fashion background that makes Diane Kruger such an interesting figure both on and off the red carpet as she often takes risks and has fun with what she wears.

As part of this new role for Chanel several videos have been released so far with Diane Kruger discussing what beauty means to her. In the one featured here she talks about her own personal history with Chanel as it has “always been by her side” and she also mentions how the ethos of founder Gabrielle [Coco] Chanel is important as she “was a very modern woman because she never made compromises.” Kruger gets to show off her fluent French in these videos, but all will not be lost in translation as they do come subtitled.

Beauty campaigns are often full of hyperbole and Kruger’s skin is indeed flawless so the product sells itself in one respect. One aspect that is striking is how it relates back to the origins of the fashion house and considering Kruger’s own personal history with the brand it gives a sense of authority to the campaign.

Diane Kruger Lego Chanel bag

This week Kruger was spotted once again with the Lego-looking Chanel plexiglass shoulder bag (that I’m coveting pretty hard). This combined with a navy-and-white striped Comme des Garçons jumper and jeans is pretty much my ideal outfit – I’d opt for a pair of Cons as the shoes are incredible but my feet have an aversion to most forms of heels (in that I can only wear them for half an hour at a time).

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

12 Jul

Last week was a summer dresses special and “Out of the Box” returns to its normal format with this edition. This week we will be looking at a mixture of red carpet appearances, magazine shoots and talk shows; patterns are a huge theme and the more they clash the better.

Winner: Diane Kruger on Jimmy Kimmel Live!

DIANE KRUGER

The Bridge premiered on FX this week and so Diane Kruger has been doing the red carpet/talk show circuit much to my delight. It’s not a secret that Diane Kruger is someone who I admire as both an actress and with her bold fashion choices and the above look definitely falls into the latter category. This isn’t the first time that Kruger has opted for two very different patterns and this polka dot t-shirt with a floral print skirt from Emanuel Ungaro’s Resort 2014 will probably be quite divisive, but here at TV Ate My Wardrobe we think it looks amazing. The slit in the skirt is probably a tad too high but the high waisted belt effect and demure neckline of the t-shirt distracts from this and it’s the clashing patterns that are in focus. It’s an outfit that would be too much on most (Solange could definitely wear it) and Kruger manages to work the different patterns so it doesn’t look too out there, this is helped by minimal makeup and her simple hair down approach.

Runner Up: Michelle Dockery for Harper’s Bazaar

Michelle Dockery Harpers Bazaar

It’s the second week in a row that Downton Abbey’s Michelle Dockery makes an appearance on this list and while the sun might still be shining magazine editorials are looking to the fall season. This striped affair is from Miu Miu’s Fall 2013 collection and with the dash of polka dots on the neck scarf it’s another patterned success. The tights/coat combo might be a much if Dockery was walking down the street but it’s perfect for a striking magazine cover.

Runner Up: Michael B. Jordan at the Fruitvale Station Premiere

Michael B Jordan New York premiere Fruitvale Station

Michael B. Jordan is currently promoting Fruitvale Station, a film which has already picked up awards at Cannes and Sundance and is getting early Oscar buzz. Jordan is known for his roles in The WireFriday Night Lights, Parenthood and Chronicle and I’m so excited to see this much attention being given to this very special actor (Andrew Garfield is also a big fan). Jordan has also been delivering style wise on the red carpet and while I’m not normally a fan of the shiny suit, Jordan looks dapper and well put together in this attire.

The Bridge Red Carpet: Diane Kruger’s Sheer Dream

9 Jul

New FX drama The Bridge debuts tomorrow night (July 10) and Diane Kruger looks stunning on the red carpet in LA yesterday in a sheer green, black and grey Jonathan Saunders gown (accompanied by the always wonderful Joshua Jackson – someone give him a show please).

Diane Kruger The Bridge Premiere

Kruger is playing Detective Sonya Cross, a member of the El Paso Police Department and she has to team up with Marco Ruiz (played by Demián Bichir), a Mexican officer after a body is found on either side of the border. The Bridge is an adaptation of Broen; a Danish/Swedish venture and one of my favorite shows of last year with Saga Noren (the Sonya Cross of Broen) following in the footsteps of the female leads of Borgen and Forbrydelsen as they are some of the best written and most interesting female characters on TV. So while I will try to spare you from too many comparisons between the two and despite having been burnt before with an adaptation of a Scandinavian project, I am cautiously optimistic for this version. Kruger’s character Cross has Asperger’s syndrome (this isn’t explicitly labelled in either Broen or The Bridge but it is clear that Saga and Sonya are on the spectrum) and this is one of the many challenges that will complicate her relationship with Ruiz.

Recently Diane Kruger spoke about her decision to do this TV project saying “From Mad Men, to Homeland, to Robin Wright in House of Cards, those female parts are so well-written and unafraid. It seems to me that they thrive and the audiences are looking for characters like that. It’s very exciting for women in general. I’ve never been offered an in-depth character like this in movies.” One of the benefits of TV is that you have a much longer period to develop a character versus the two and a half hours or so that you have to do it on film, so it’s not surprising that Kruger gives this as a reason. It also helps that TV is no longer seen as a step back and there are so many exciting and interesting roles on TV that appeal to those who have mostly stuck to film acting (Kruger does have an uncredited appearance in an episode of Fringe).

Are you looking forward to The Bridge?

Critics’ Choice 2013 TV Awards Red Carpet Highlights: Diane Kruger and Elisabeth Moss

11 Jun

Last night the Critics’ Choice 2013 TV Awards took place in Los Angeles at the Beverly Hilton Hotel with Parks and Recreation favorite Retta hosting the proceedings. While Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad tied in the Best Drama Series category, there is also a tie here at TV Ate My Wardrobe for best red carpet look between Elisabeth Moss who has featured multiple times in our “Look of the Week” and Diane Kruger, who will most likely become a weekly staple of this column.

elisabeth moss critics choice

The haircut that Elisabeth Moss got backstage on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon coupled with the blonde color continues to be a defining look (and I think we can put Moss in the group of women who look better with shorter hair, a group I adore). It sets her apart from the character we are so used to seeing her play, a character that has to be tough around the edges because of her job and the decade she is working in. This makes Moss look more youthful and fun, something that is missing from Peggy most of the time.

The plunging pink Valentino prom style dress suits this event and really compliments this new hairstyle. Moss has opted for toned down makeup, but I think a strong lip color would really set it off.

Elisabeth Moss took home the award for Best Actress in a Mini-Series or Movie for Top of the Lake and she joked that “I’ve never won an award for acting. I have to remember not to thank anyone from Mad Men!”

Diane Kruger critics choice red carpet

Diane Kruger is a fashion icon both on and off the red carpet because she takes chances but also has an eye for Old Hollywood glamour and this black strapless Nina Ricci gown falls into the latter camp. The sweetheart neckline evokes Jessica Rabbit and the retro inspired waves give the impression that Kruger is a 1950s starlet. The strong red lip color adds to this look and it’s a shame that the effect of the Manolo Blahnik pumps is lost in this shot as they blend into the red carpet. Diane Kruger’s new show The Bridge debuts on July 10 and as I have mentioned previously this is one of my most anticipated summer shows. Kruger took to the stage with co-star Demián Bichir to present at the awards.

Diane Kruger’s Summer Style

28 May

In just over a month Diane Kruger will be on screens in FX’s The Bridge, an adaptation of the Scandinavian show Broen. This new version is swapping out the Swedish/Danish setting and using the border between Mexico and the U.S. as its location. As a fan of the original series I have high hopes for this venture, even if the AMC version of The Killing is enough to make me cautious in my optimism. Kruger is playing Sonya Cross, a brilliant investigator who lacks empathy, is blunt to the point of being rude and falls somewhere on the autism spectrum. The man that Cross will have to work with to solve the series of connected crimes that occur on U.S. and Mexican soil is Marco Ruiz (played by Oscar nominee Demián Bichir) and he faces an extra challenge as his department is corrupt. I look forward to how they will use the political backdrop and what aspects from Broen will remain and evolve to match the setting.

Diane Kruger tends to stand out on the red carpet and I’m looking forward to all of the press events that will occur before The Bridge’s July 10 premiere date. Yesterday Kruger attended Joel Silver’s Memorial Day party in L.A. and demonstrated that it isn’t just high fashion that she excels at. Wearing a polka dot blouse (!), grey skater skirt and monochrome brogues Kruger looks like the epitome of summer chic. Plus bonus Joshua Jackson, also rocking a perfect casual look for the sunshine. I’m not the only one wants to emulate Kruger’s style as Mad Men’s January Jones recently told The Edit that Kruger “always looks fantastic so I watch what she wears. We like to go to shows or look online and then fight each other for the best [pieces].”

Diane Kruger Joshua Jackson

The Bridge will premiere Wednesday, July 10 on FX. To watch a preview check out the video below and I kind of hope they keep the leather trousers that Kruger’s counterpart wore in Broen.
