First Look at The Americans Season 2

13 Dec

The Americans is one of TV Ate My Wardrobe’s top shows of 2013 and FX has just released the first look at season 2. The teaser reveals the spy show is back February and features a hidden Philip and Elizabeth in a closet with a gun. A fetching purple zip up jacket is the perfect thing to hide behind.

the americans Who is the mystery voice on the phone saying “I didn’t tell them anything?” And is that all going to change when he sees their gun? The silencer and lack of wigs/disguises would suggest that all is not going to end well for this person and even though it’s only a twenty second clip my anticipation for The Americans return has skyrocketed. It might not even be a scene from the show and just a specific promo only clip. Whatever it is, it’s done the job intended and prompts many questions. It’s also pretty hot seeing Philip and Elizabeth in such a confined location.

Earlier this week we showcased the costuming and wig work of season 1, talking about how identity and marriage is just as vital to The Americans as any of their covert missions and season 2 will hopefully bring more of the same, but with less of the on/off status with the Jennings’ relationship.

HBO Promo Roundup: Girls, Looking and True Detective

26 Nov

2013 isn’t over yet, but we are already looking to the new and returning shows that will be hitting screens in January on HBO. Girls is back for its third season and after the GIF tease we now have a full length trailer that suggest Hannah won’t be so isolated this year. Airing the same night as Girls is new series Looking, which follows three gay best friends in the San Francisco area as they deal with dating, aging and everything in-between. There’s not a bongo in sight with the new Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson project True Detective and this looks like it’s going to be incredibly brutal and dark.

We will be talking a lot more about all three shows in the new year, but in the meantime check out the promos below and leave your reactions in the comments. The excitement for HBO’s newest offerings is pretty high for us here at TV Ate My Wardrobe and there will be plenty of costume chat among other things.

Girls Season 3 GIF Preview

21 Nov

The first look at season 3 of Girls was like an Instagram flipbook, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the second glimpse of the new episodes comes courtesy of a selection of 10 GIFs on Buzzfeed. Yep this is an HBO marketing strategy and while it may come across as super gimmicky, it’s also pretty perfect for how Girls has embraced social media as a promotional tool.

So what do these 10 GIFs reveal about the new season? Not a huge amount, but there is some Adam smooching and considering how the last season ended this shouldn’t come as a shock. Whether Adam and Hannah will be able to make it work is another question and even though the rom-com like reunion didn’t exactly thrill me, having Adam back in the main story is definitely a bonus.

Hannah was incredibly isolated for most of last year as all of her relationships fell apart and these GIFs suggest that there will be a focus on the friend aspect. For me the reason why Girls resonates is because of how it explores post-college friendships and this got lost in season 2, these GIFs suggest that this aspect will be back.

There is a also a briefest of first looks at my favorite Daily Show correspondent Jessica Williams and an epic spit take, though I’m not entirely sure I agree with the heading of this one “Because you haven’t laughed like this since last season.” Yes there were funny moments, but it was definitely more tragicomedy for the most part. I haven’t put a Q-tip anywhere near my ear since THAT episode.

“Girls” Season 3 Instagrammy Teaser

19 Aug

It won’t air until 2014 but HBO has released a new “In Production” teaser for season 3 of Girls. Shot in the style of many different Instagram-like photos (with multiple filters of course) we get a glimpse of what they next season will entail including a trip to the beach. While it’s hard to determine anything plot wise from this promo there is an increased amount of Elijah (yay!) and Ray won’t be going anywhere despite his break-up with Shoshanna (also yay).  Hopefully this season will work on building the fractured friendships that left Hannah isolated for most of the second year and less time on the romcom narrative of Adam saving Hannah – don’t get me wrong I think Adam is an interesting character but the running to save you moment wasn’t particularly compelling.

Creating a teaser that looks like an Instagram flick book reflects how the Girls characters would document their lives and with the way that Lena Dunham and some of her co-stars use social media. HBO has capitalized on this aspect with this rolling behind the scenes production diary, which chronicles all of the tweets and Instagrams from the set.

The track used over the promo is Robert ToTeras’  “Break Out The Boom-Boom” and if it sounds familiar it’s because it was used on this Mindy Project promo just prior to the first season premiere.

“Enough Said” Trailer: James Gandolfini as the Romantic Lead

7 Aug

Nicole Holofcener’s next film Enough Said has taken on a bittersweet role as one of James Gandolfini’s final projects and the first trailer for this romantic comedy has been released. It’s a play on the classic boy meets girl; Gandolfini’s Albert meets Eva (played by the wonderful Julia Louis-Dreyfus) and things take a farcical turn thanks to Eva’s new client Marianne (Nicole Holofcener regular Catherine Keener) who also happens to be Albert’s ex-wife . One aspect that seems to run through the work of Holofcener is exploring characters that have reached a crossroad in their life and both Friends with Money and Please Give feature the kind of storytelling that focuses on broken and new relationships. Holofcener’s strength lies in her approach to character and romance; flaws and foibles can be a both a big turn off and an attraction.

Enough Said debuts at TIFF next month and I’m looking forward to seeing Gandolfini in a project that shows his charm and romantic acting chops. It’s going to be a poignant affair as this is now Gandolfini’s penultimate film (Animal Rescue is set to be released next year) and after his death Nicole Holofcener said about his work on this film that “He didn’t believe he could play a romantic lead, even though everyone on the set thought he was sexy and hilarious. He was charming and self-effacing and incredibly talented. Not only did he pull off playing a leading man, his performance is subtle and moving and very, very lovely.”

Watch the trailer for Enough Said below.

Veronica Mars Debuts New Footage at Comic-Con

22 Jul

Comic-Con is big business for a range of shows that we cover here at TV Ate My Wardrobe and the one show now turned movie that probably caused the most excitement for this writer is Veronica Mars. The Kickstarter funded project debuted new footage and it doesn’t disappoint (well maybe the amount of Piz disappoints but hey, at least he references Buffy).

My first experience of Veronica Mars was last year and so I’m pretty new to this world and while The X-Files reunionCatching Fire trailer, X-Men: Days of Future Past panel and Hannibal gag reel appear high on my best of Comic-Con list, this Veronica Mars preview tops. Though as a sidebar if someone could put the whole Entertainment Weekly “Women Who Kick Ass” panel online I think it could challenge Veronica Mars for that title.

Veronica Mars Comic Con

The preview includes new footage from the film and interviews with several cast members old and new. Shots of creator Rob Thomas and some of the cast watching the Kickstarter counter increasing reminds us why this film is happening and that it’s the fans that have made this possible. A Party Down reunion is a welcome sight as Ryan Hansen and Martin Starr are interviewed together; I would be very happy to see the pair don pink bow ties and trade insults once again. Oh and that look Logan gives Veronica in the car is enough to reignite the shipper flame (that never really went out). Expect dancing, back flips and wet guys in suits.

Style points are given to all the Team t-shirts (with Dick being the overall winner, because, well it’s Ryan Hansen) and Tina Majorino’s new shorter and voluminous cut gets the biggest nod of the day as she looks fantastic.

Boardwalk Empire Promo: “Only Kings Understand Each Other”

18 Jul

Several attempts to challenge Nucky’s power have been made during the first three seasons of Boardwalk Empire and he will face a new rival when we return to Atlantic City in September. HBO released a teaser last month that showed a glimpse at new character Dr Valentin Narcisse, played by Jeffrey Wright and in this full length promo it is suggests that Narcisse will be the one challenging Nucky for power this season.

The mass shooting that occurred at Gillian’s whorehouse that killed most of Gyp Rosetti’s men remains unsolved in the eyes of the law, but we know very well that it was Richard Harrow who acted alone in this spree. Harrow, Capone and Chalky are three characters that I would like to see more of and while they don’t feature prominently in this promo I would imagine they will all have an important role to play; where their loyalty falls is another question.

Nucky seems to be using the old playground defense of “he started it” as he says “I didn’t ask for trouble. What was brought to my doorstep, I returned.” Considering he had a crate with a body in it (Owen *sob*) delivered, what he returns is not pleasant.

As always there is plenty of glitz, dancing and drinking that goes hand in hand with the violent underbelly of Boardwalk Empire and the one person missing from both this and the first teaser is Margaret; what role will she play when the show returns Sunday, September 8?

First Trailer For Burton & Taylor: “We’re Addicts Elizabeth, You and I”

8 Jul

Last month the first photo of Helena Bonham Carter and Dominic West as Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton was released and now we have the first trailer. Set in 1983 the 90-minute drama tells the story of the pair performing together in Noël Coward’s play Private Lives. Burton and Taylor are known for having a love story for the ages; one that was passionate and turbulent and this biopic will chronicle one of their last periods.

The promo reveals both personal and public aspects of Burton and Taylor, with Burton comparing their story to addiction and Taylor responds with “Love is not a drug.” In this case it might very well be. Both Helena Bonham Carter and Dominic West look up for the task of playing such well known figures and their chemistry is obvious form this preview; it’s probably safe to say that this will be a much better attempt at portraying their story than Lifetime’s Liz & Dick, which aired last year.

I’m already obsessed with Burton’s camel coat and blue scarf combo as he walks down to the subway and it looks like it will be a costuming feast for the eyes.

Burton & Taylor airs on BBC 4 and BBC America later this year.

New Breaking Bad Poster: Remember My Name

25 Jun

Earlier this month AMC released a teaser poster for the final 8 episodes of Breaking Bad with the ominous tagline “All Bad Things Must Come to an End.” The new key art has a more direct message and features a menacing looking Walter White; he barely resembles the guy in his underwear from the season 1 promo. Looking angry and in control, but it’s his name that could get him into trouble as Hank knows the truth behind Heisenberg.

What do you think of the new poster? Worried about the lack of Jesse? Attempting (and failing) to not sing the theme from Fame?

Breaking Bad returns to AMC Sunday, August 11.

New “Masters of Sex” Teaser: There’s Nothing Polite About Making History

18 Jun

Showtime’s Masters of Sex doesn’t premiere until September but this new teaser gives us a glimpse of what we can expect from Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan as the Masters and Johnson sexuality research team. Following the work of Alfred Kinsey (the movie Kinsey is a good place to start and features a whole host of familiar faces such as Peter Sarsgaard, Laura Linney and John Krasinski), William Masters and Virginia Johnson took on the science of human sexuality research baton and were pioneers in this field.  This new drama chronicles the lives of both Masters and Johnson and the work that they did that helped kick start the sexual revolution.

This teaser shows that there will be humor in their work and revelations that will change how sex is discussed in the private and public sphere. I’m very happy to have both Lizzy Caplan and Michael Sheen on TV and I’m looking forward to seeing their trajectory from this ’50s setting as researchers to landing cover of Time magazine.

Masters of Sex premieres Sunday, September 29 on Showtime.
