Out of the Box: Look of the Week

31 Oct

“Out of the Box” is a smorgasbord of fancy pants attire, amazing winter coats (thankfully it has finally turned to outerwear requiring climates), new album artwork and an A-list movie star talking gender politics and Borgen.

Amy Poehler Yes Please hit stores this week and Amy Poehler has been doing the talk show rounds to promote her new book. This is a very cool and perfect look for New York in the fall. This is both excellent coat and ankle boot porn.

Zendaya ColemanContinuing the excellent coat trend is Zendaya Coleman before her Good Morning America appearance on Monday wearing a green tweed Karolyn Pho coat with a super funky Cheng-Huai Chuang drop-waist dress. Both are striking and the black tights/Prada Mary Janes are the spot on choice for this ’60s inspired daytime look.

Hannah SimoneSometimes a simple black dress is all you need and Hannah Simone looks statuesque at a party in LA celebrating the opening of Dsquared2’s first boutique in the US.

She and HimMeanwhile, one of Hannah Simone’s New Girl cast mates has been busy over the summer hiatus recording a new album covering classic tracks including Dusty Springfield’s “Stay Awhile.” This week the new She & Him artwork has been unveiled and the ’60s is infused in both the song material and imagery; Zooey Deschanel and M Ward look like they should be in a black and white French movie. In not shocking news I am very much coveting Deschanel’s striped tee/skirt look and her less blocky bangs suit this not so twee styling.

Keira PorterKeira Knightley appears in Net-a-Porter’s The Edit this week promoting upcoming films The Imitation Game and Laggies (or Say When if you are in the UK). In the interview Knightley discusses feminism, inequality and ingrained ideas of how things are meant to be and it is her comments about Borgen that caught my attention, the rule is if someone talks about this show I will get excited:

“There’s a storyline in Borgen [the TV drama about the first female prime minister of Denmark] where her husband is freaking out because he’s not seeing his wife anymore and the wife isn’t seeing the kids because she doesn’t have enough time, so he’s going to leave her. And as a viewer, I went, ‘Oh my God, she has to give up her job! She needs to spend more time with her family.’ Then I realized, ‘Wait, if it was a guy playing the prime minister and his wife was freaking out, you’d go, ‘Shut up, woman! He’s the fucking prime minister, give him a fucking break!’ I’m a feminist, somebody who is saying there’s a fucking problem, and I’m thinking that.”

The interview also covers why Knightley doesn’t want to play the fairy tale roles any more – “Why should you be told to wait for some fucking dude to rescue you?” – getting older and what kind of projects she is drawn to now she is approaching 30. The clothes accompanying this profile are stunning including Delpozo dress in the shot above.

“Out of the Box” is serving up an almost all Elle Women in Hollywood rundown with a bonus fantasy casting prospect courtesy of the GQ Gentlemen’s ball. There’s a shift into fall threads and a whole lot simple designs with a twist sticking with a blue/black/white color palette. Oh and the event was in association with Calvin Klein, this is pretty much what most attendees are wearing.

Lizzy CaplanLizzy Caplan’s color block big collar number is like the Calvin Klein sporty twist on this Louis Vuitton outfit Michelle Williams wore to the Cabaret opening night. The zip details give it a playful edge and it’s a super cute dress.

Ashley MadekweWearing a Calvin Klein LBD with a difference thanks to the addition of a metallic bib is Ashley Madekwe and this is another stunning simple look with a slight edge.

Kerry WashingtonMore dramatic zip detail and an even more dramatic neckline, which looks like the fanciest serviette; Kerry Washington is totally pulling off a dress that might be too much for others. The dash of blue eye makeup doesn’t delve into matchy matchy territory and I love her oxblood nail color next to navy of the dress.

Tina FeySo we’ve had a LBD with a twist and now here’s just a simple and effective LBD from Tina Fey.

Brie LarsonAnd another very simple outfit from one of the cover stars of the Women in Hollywood issue of Elle and Brie Larson hits one of my sweet spots for a fancy(ish) pants event as I’m a sucker for the menswear influence (owning a really good lady tux is the dream)The only thing that doesn’t quite work is going full monochromatic with the Louboutin pumps (which are a slightly different shade of white).

Joshua Jackson and Taylor KitschI would make a #TrueDetectiveSeason2 gag here if one of them wasn’t probably/definitely been cast, but if someone could cast ‘Grizzly McBeardy’ Andrew Garfield, this dashing and well tailored Joshua Jackson and a very Riggins looking Taylor Kitsch in something then I would be thrilled. Make this happen casting people. Oh and maybe trim Andrew Garfield’s beard down just a smidge (okay a few inches). For now we have this excellent image thanks to the GQ Gentlemen’s Ball.

Pretty, patterned and textured (alliteration be damned) frocks ahoy from a variety of premieres, award shows and red carpet events on this edition of “Out of the Box.”

Aubrey PlazaIt’s not just because of the all important pocket factor that makes me head over heels for Aubrey Plaza in Mary Katrantzou; the bold and colorful print is pure Mary Katrantzou magic and Plaza is a sartorial delight. There’s no need for accessories with a dress like this and I’m so happy to see gold sandals rather than nude pumps as the footwear choice.

Kaitlyn DeverKaitlyn Dever was only in one episode of Party Down as Karen’s wannabe actress daughter Escapade, but because she was mentioned so frequently I still automatically think of the company picnic episode whenever I see her. A slight tangent to start with and here is Dever at the New York premiere of Laggies (I can’t wait to see this movie) in a stunning black lace Oscar de la Renta frock and platform Brian Atwood peep-toes. This look is elegant, age appropriate and uses the sheer trend in way that doesn’t have me yelling “Whyyyyyyyyy?” at my screen for once.

Michelle MonaghanDolce & Gabbana have embraced fairy tale fashion in their fall 2014 collection and Michelle Monaghan is working the key motif number like a charm at the 20th Annual Fulfillment Fund Stars Benefit Gala. The floral print contrasts with the black jacquard dress and is a prime example of how to wear florals long after the summer is over.

Kristen SchaalThe runway was awash with gingham last month as Michael Kors, Oscar de la Renta and Altuzarra were all working this trend; Kristen Schaal wore this super cute blue and white gingham dress to the Bob’s Burgers PaleyFest panel completing the look with a pair of white Oxfords. Flat shoe high five!

Laverne Cox and Taylor SchillingMTV and Logo are both premiering Laverne Cox Presents: The T Word documentary tonight and last night Cox was joined by her OITNB co-star Taylor Schilling to celebrate this television event. Cox spent the day wearing a variety of purple outfits for Spirit Day (and you can see them all on her Instagram) and she saved the best for last in this beautiful Monique Lhuillier lace gown. Schilling’s multicolored floral button down has a splash of purple and I wish we could see her shoes (or booties if I had to guess) a little better as it looks like the carpet has merged with her feet. There’s a clash in fancy levels between the two outfits, but as Cox is the one in the spotlight it makes sense that her attire is far dressier.

Kerry Washington AllureKerry Washington does the whole fresh faced look on the cover of Allure and it’s one of her best magazine covers to date (and over the past year there have been many). Wearing what looks like an Olivia Pope wine cardigan this is a far cry from her Scandal character with choppy, tousled and shorter locks plus a whole lot of cleav.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

10 Oct

The summer might be over, but the best of this week’s style on “Out of the Box” showcases some surprising post summer light attire with business cute and plain white chic. Plus a couple of fantastic magazine covers focusing on showrunners and a splash of animal print color to close things out.

Aisha TylerAisha Tyler’s white mini dress (with pockets!) is jazzed up with some excellent shoe/clutch/bracelet accessories at the American Horror Story: Freak Show premiere and who cares if it is way past Labor Day; this looks amazing.

Karen Gillan KimmelKaren Gillan appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live in something that wouldn’t look out of place on a Taylor Swift post gym sidewalk strut and her legs go for miles. It’s a super cute outfit and I especially love the gold shoulder strap detail (at first I thought she was carrying more than one bag). Short hair is still working wonders even if she’s rocking long wigged locks on Selfie.

Diane Kruger joining Instagram has already given me one of my favorite photos from this week (the cat pictures she posted are also pretty wonderful) and she also unveiled her Australian Harper’s Bazaar cover shot. As they are heading into the warm season down under this Chanel ensemble is perfectly spring boho and a striking image.

Shonda Rhimes THR coverThere is only one option really for who should cover the Power Showrunners issue of The Hollywood Reporter and that’s Shonda Rhimes as the Thursday night TGIT Shondaland drama block – Grey’s AnatomyScandalHow to Get Away with Murder – is killing it in the ratings. In the issue Rhimes discusses a whole host of things including early creative friction on Grey’s Anatomy with studio executives and the recent New York Times profile where for some reason they thought it was okay to label her an “angry black woman” and the subsequent reaction to this horrific piece. Rhimes also discusses returning to Dartmouth this summer, which in turn reveals a hint of what her Mindy Project cameo will entail. The interview is fascinating and can be read in full here.

IMG_1022From one showrunner to another and Lena Dunham is still on her book tour for Not That Kind of Girl, plus this week she has guest edited Stylist magazine. Stylist is celebrating its fifth anniversary so what better way to combine the two than Dunham leaping out of a tiered cake. The cover shot by photographer Autumn De Wilde is also a nod to Dunham’s mother Laurie Simmons as legs are a repeated image in her work. It’s a fun, playful cover and the color palette really helps the image stand out.

Natalie Dormer zebra printClosing this week out with Natalie Dormer in a bold red and orange zebra print House of Holland dress at People’s One to Watch LA event. Dormer is still going for full dramatic side sweep hair as a result of her Mockingjay Cressida styling and as an “Out of the Box” regular I think we will be seeing more of Dormer on here come the huge Mockingjay promotional tour. The chunky straps on Dormer’s Jimmy Choo sandals are maybe a bit too thick for the length of this dress combined with the strong black zebra stripes, but this is a minor complaint.

Time to check in on the style highlights of the week and it’s all about the movie premieres including Gone Girl, Paris Fashion Week and various other events.

Carrie CoonOne of the breakout stars of this year has been The Leftovers’ Carrie Coon who came out of nowhere (well, not exactly nowhere as she’s Tony nominated) to devastate us on a weekly basis as Nora Durst. Now she’s starring in Gone Girl as Ben Affleck’s twin sister in a role that grounds the protagonist of this story – and she’s really pretty amazing in it – adding both sympathy to Nick and humor to proceedings. At the New York Film Festival screening Coon looks striking in a beautiful floral strapless gown. Bonus points for the green not too matchy-matchy clutch and strong pink lips color.

Leighton MeesterLeighton Meester gives a monochromatic twist in Balmain at the premiere for The Judge. There’s something very retro-futuristic about this long sleeved/short hemline dress that makes me think of a 1960s sci-fi or even spy show. Just so long as no one mistakes the skirt detail for spare napkins.

Allison WilliamsAllison Williams has a very different take on black and white with a sporty contrast collar and waist in super chic Vionnet at the 2014 Global Citizen Festival. It’s a slight departure for the Girls star and while it’s still ultra feminine and kinda preppy, it’s not so overtly girly.

Natalie Dormer Dior Paris Fashion weekSpeaking of chic, here is Natalie Dormer attending the Dior runway show at Paris Fashion week looking laid back and stylish all at one. This is a fantastic coat.

Kiernan ShipkaAdding some bright color to this week’s pretty muted “Out of the Box” is Kiernan Shipka in Valentino at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Hollywood Costume opening party. This is a fun, cute outfit on the Mad Men star as she continues to kill it on the red carpet, while still looking her age. A dress like this might not work on an actress over 20, but that’s definitely not a problem here. Instead of opting for strappy gold sandals or blah nude heels, Shipka’s continued the bright theme with amazing orange Valentino ‘Rockstud’ pumps.

Danai GuriraOne more “Out of the Box” injection of bold color and this one is courtesy of Danai Gurira at The Walking Dead season 5 premiere (the show returns Sunday, October 12) wearing a pink geometric Christian Siriano number. Added skirt flaps have been a big trend this week and I’m enjoying this silhouette shake up.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

26 Sep

A busy week for the new Fall TV season and yet relatively light on the red carpet front for “Out of the Box” offerings. Fox and NBC have had their celebrations and now it is time for ABC to launch their new TGIT night, plus talk show appearances, the Metropolitan Opera’s Opening Night Gala and forthcoming costuming delights.

#TGIT Premiere Event Hosted by TwitterIt was the first #TGIT this week with three shows from Shondaland (Grey’s AnatomyScandal and How to Get Away with Murder) and Scandal’s Darby Stanchfield is our best dressed from the ABC event to celebrate this new drama block. The nude shoes are a letdown, but not enough to detract from this super sparkly Jasper Conran frock.

http://instagram.com/p/tT1pnBh886/?modal=true

This is a fun group shot from this party (courtesy of Darby Stanchfield’s Instagram) featuring women from all three shows and a range of pretty great party frocks. Not so sure about Ellen Pompeo’s Op Art looking jumpsuit, but this is my standard wrinkled nose reaction to most jumpsuits. Viola Davis’ multicolor delights win the best shoes of the night and I’m glad to see such a strong variety of styles from this group of women (from l-r Camilla Luddington, Bellamy Young, Kerry Washington, Viola Davis, Ellen Pompeo, Darby Stanchfield, Katie Lowes, Jerrika Hinton).

Kerry WsahingtonKerry Washington has been on the talk show trail this week to promote the return of Scandal and the Scandal inspired line at The Limited. This is our favorite look of Washington’s this week and as it includes polka dots the answer could easily be because, of course. Polka dots are part of the reason, however there is an overall playful quality to this Preen ‘Liberty’ dress and Washington manages to stay the right side of matchy matchy with her accessorizing. Adore.

Amy RyanAre you sensing a theme? Amy Ryan’s vintage Victor Costa gown is a polka dot dream and she looks stunning at the Metropolitan Opera’s Opening Night Gala. A strong red lip color could really set it off and yet I really like the minimalist hair/makeup/jewelry approach to this look.

Patricia ClarksonPatricia Clarkson is one of those actresses I am always thrilled to see and this applies to both the red carpet and on screen. Clarkson is the picture of sophisticated elegance while also pulling off the lace cutouts. Added bold lipstick bonus points.

The gift that keeps on giving is Mindy Kaling’s Instagram and here is what I’m sure will be one of my favorite Mindy Project looks covering bold color (yellow!) and a fun pattern.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

19 Sep

Fall TV is back and after the Fox celebration last week, NBC are showing off talent from their current and new shows. Some of these are more likely to be on for longer than others, though none of the new offerings are all that enticing at the moment. Talk show appearances and Netflix launching in France are all on the menu today.

Julianna MarguliesJulianna Margulies tends to make all the right style choices and here she is killing it once again on The Tonight Show in a stunning Pamella Roland frock (yes there are pockets). You don’t get the full effect from this sitting down shot, but the print is a fun take on a traditional silhouette that would have me twirling in the aisles. A good dramatic injection of red lip color and I am so excited about the return of The Good Wife this weekend Sunday. Look out for our costuming/story reactions to the premiere.

Cristin MiliotiI am charmed by both Cristin Milioti and Ben Feldman which is enough to guarantee I will watch the first six episodes of A to Z and I just hope the material will end up matching (or at the very least not wasting) their talents. Milioti has played it cool in the ultimate safe LBD, but she has snazzed the whole think up with a pair of metallic stilettos.

Rashida JonesThis is a very cute outfit that could double for stylish office wear as well as going out material for a relaxed affair like this one. It’s definitely more daytime than evening and the splash of pink lipstick stops this from looking so much like work attire.

RettaThankfully someone is injecting bold color at this NBC event and Retta’s yellow and turquoise dress is just what this red carpet needs. It is fun, summery outfit and maybe it’s not quite the time to ditch bright tones for the fall season.

Taylor SchillingNetflix launched in France this week and some of the Orange is the New Black cast were on hand to promote the streaming service. Taylor Schilling looks incredible in a cobalt-blue Elie Saab. This is when sheer detail really works with just a hint of it near the hemline.

Uzo AdubaUzo Aduba is on a style high at the moment after several NYFW hits and she joins co-star Taylor Schilling in France to promote both Netflix and OITNB. This is a very pretty floral frock (even as it smooshes her boobs up high) and Aduba is working a whole range of looks at the moment from 70s secretary chic to shimmery art deco goodness and now a 50s inspired gown (with added cleav).

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

12 Sep

A busy week with a whole host of events such as the Toronto International Film Festival, New York Fashion Week, the US Open and fall TV shindigs. We’ve got the best looks from these events – except for NYFW runway watching style which has separate posts here and here – and there’s been a lot of game stepping up fashion wise. It’s not surprising then that this is TV Ate My Wardrobe’s biggest “Out of the Box” post since we started over a year ago.

Tina FeyStarting with Tina Fey at TIFF in a gorgeous midnight-blue Temperley London frock at the This is Where I Leave You press conference and she is serving up a whole lot of confidence and glam. A pretty dress is a pretty dress, however one thing a lot of these dresses have in common this week is fabric that is textured in a manner that makes them stand out beyond the print or cut of the silhouette.

Tina Fey TIFFI couldn’t choose between the two Tina Fey TIFF dresses and this Christian Siriano number is doing the play on texture in an even more striking and overt manner. As with the Temperley London this is very much in the Tina Fey wheelhouse, but it stands out thanks to the embossing. Both the hair up retro style and the more relaxed hair down approach work for their respective outfits.

Kristen WiigThe dude in the background seems like he is way into this Suno dress Kristen Wiig is wearing at the Welcome to Me premiere at TIFF and so am I. The mixture of stripes and florals is not something everyone can pull off and Wiig is hitting the mark on this occasion (I can also picture it on Diane Kruger, because Diane Kruger). The print is giving off an impression of pleating on the skirt and this is one of my current clothing obsessions.

Greta GerwigSo How I Met Your Dad didn’t happen and while I would have loved to see Greta Gerwig on TV in a way I am glad it isn’t this particular project, I hope it doesn’t make her run from future TV ventures. Appearing at the While We Were Young TIFF premiere Gerwig looks super cute in a swirly metallic patterned Prabal Gurung frock.

Chelsea PerettiMoving on to the Fox Fall Eco-Casino party and first up Chelsea Peretti in charcoal grey. I really love this and I’m extra excited that I will get to talk about Gina’s top notch sweater game on Brooklyn Nine-Nine very soon.

Hannah SimonePockets! Hannah Simone has had a busy week so while this dress is not setting the world on fire, it’s perfectly lovely and the pockets give it an extra edge.

Zooey DeschanelIt is after Labor Day and Zooey Deschanel continues to wear white *gasp* Eh, I don’t know if anyone really pays attention to that ‘rule’ anymore and this is another example of casual, but cute attire from the New Girl star. I especially like the black waist detail – though I really want to see what it looks like from the back – and I applaud the kitten heel choice. A bold lip color would really set the whole thing off.

Jess WeixlerInStyle celebrated 20 years with a lavish and appropriately stylish bash including Jess Weixler in a beautiful silk gown (plus pockets) with contrasting prints. This is also the ideal time to mention The Good Wife returns in a week (Sunday, 21) and Robyn is another character who makes me want all the sweaters.

Yvonne StrahovskiIn textured dress trend triumph is Yvonne Strahovski; I love how unique this with the leather accents and the blue ring detail. Strahovski also had one of my favorite runway watching looks earlier this week at the Naeem Khan show.

Keke PalmerIt’s been a big week for Keke Palmer as she became the first African-American Cinderella on Broadway and here she is at the InStyle party looking super chic in a Etre Cécile tank top paired with a beautiful icy (and you guessed it textured/pocketed) Mantu skirt.

Lizzy CaplanAfter all that glitz and glam we will leave you with the best relaxed look of the week with Lizzy Caplan at the US Open in jeans and a stripy tank with a grey jumper tied around her waist. Red lip color really is the best way to make even the most chilled outfit pop.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

5 Sep

Fall is here and it has been a busy week with multiple film/show premieres, the start of New York Fashion Week and it’s already time for the next magazine cycle. “Out of the Box” is an eclectic mix of all of these things and while we’re light on NYFW today, expect this to be very different next week when we will be taking a look at individual shows (Fantasy Costuming ahoy) and those stars attending.

This is one of the longer “Look of the Week” entries thanks to the volume of events/editorials this week so let’s get to it.

Mindy Kaling flareStarting with the magazine editorial side and Mindy Kaling’s stunning cover for the October issue of Flare. The Dries Van Noten dress is hypnotic and I’m so glad to see Mindy’s own style reflected in this outfit choice; the whole shoot is fun and the interview covers a number of things including being a boss and the designers she is drawn to.

Keri RussellKeri Russell covers the new issue of Brooklyn Magazine and the accompanying editorial serves up steely faced Elizabeth Jennings like shots such as the one above, coupled with a more playful side of Russell that you might expect from the actress who once played Felicity. The bold red lip color (Urban Decay 24/7 lip liner “69” is the product in question, thanks Tina Turnbow!) is one I will be trying out this fall and it complements the deep blue of the Katie Emilio top and Camilla and Marc skirt.

Kathryn HahnMoving on to the red carpet and Kathryn Hahn at the Venice Film Festival premiere for She’s Funny that Way wearing a Marni ensemble. Hahn adds glitz to this super chic all-black outfit with an embellished jacket while keeping it simple with crepe wide-legged pants. I am always happy when Kathryn Hahn shows up on screen and the same can be said on the red carpet.

Claire Danes Homeland premiereAlso going for the black option is Claire Danes at a New York screening of the Homeland season 4 premiere and she adds a pop of color with her pumps and lipstick choice. This is stylish without going over the top and it’s ideal for an occasion like this. Totally into the pushed up sleeves detail (although I bet they’re a lumpy nightmare if a non-loose fitting jacket is worn over the top).

Lucy LiuA sparkly Carolina Herrera navy frock for Lucy Liu at a luncheon honoring Carolina Herrera at the Lincoln Center (standard fashiony hedge backdrop). It’s a really lovely look that works for this daytime event, plus it could easily transition into an evening outfit.

Uzo AdubaTime for some runway watching attire and first up is Uzo Aduba pulling off 1970s secretary chic at the Honor show. This is a really cute floaty dress with the bow/pattern detail complementing each other.

Morgan SaylorAlso at the Honor show is Homeland’s Morgan Saylor (don’t expect to see Dana in season 4) and this is a fun pattern clashing ensemble from the 19-year old. Bonus points for the red lip color (sense a theme?) and the side pony.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

29 Aug

The Emmys are over and the red carpet has been awash with fabulous attire (the ‘best of’ rundown is here, here and here) so this edition of “Out of the Box” is a mixture of iconic shots of the week, magazine covers and a new fashion campaign featuring a Game of Thrones star.

Beyonce FeministWhile TV Ate My Wardrobe has been Emmy focused this week, another awards show took place with the VMAs and Beyoncé performed an incredible 12-song medley over 16 minutes. One of the defining images came during “Flawless” as Beyoncé stood defiant in front of a huge “FEMINIST” sign (for an excellent article on Beyoncé and this moment head here). It’s been a banner week for women in pop and feminism with Taylor Swift also reconciling her past dismissive thoughts on feminism with an acknowledgement that she is a feminist.

MichonneEntertainment Weekly released four in motion Walking Dead covers; this one featuring Michonne is incredible and by far the most striking.

Nylon Aubrey PlazaIt looks like Nylon magazine is ditching its TV issue special format for their September issue; however one of TV Ate My Wardrobe’s TV favorites is covering the ‘Rebel Fashion’ themed edition with Aubrey Plaza in leather and (faux?) fur. You can watch a video of Aubrey here talking about the location of the photo shoot, designers she is into and the final season of Parks and Recreation.

Karen Millen Sophie TurnerKit Harington isn’t the only Game of Thrones star booking fall campaigns as Sophie Turner is looking a far cry from the heavy gown wearing and now feathered shouldered Sansa Stark as part of the new Karen Millen showcase. In the accompanying video (which you can see below) Turner is wearing this floral jacket (you can get an oversized version at the moment) as she travels across London to the shoot while the strains of Elastica’s “Connection” (this song sums up my Britpop years) plays over the top. It’s a cool nod to the decade that is influencing fashion at the moment and London is a prominent feature now as it was then.
