The Jenny Packham NYFW Spring 2014 Collection: If Gossip Girl Was Still on…

11 Sep

Before Kate Middleton wore it, a fictional Queen B dressed in the same rose colored Jenny Packham gown. Gossip Girl is no more and so the new Jenny Packham collection won’t feature on the Upper East Side, but here at TV Ate My Wardrobe we’re going to play Fantasy Costuming with a twist. We’ve picked out several looks from yesterday’s Jenny Packham runway show that we think Blair Waldorf would want in her in closet. While it was definitely time for Gossip Girl to come to an end, one aspect we miss is the costuming; from whatever top Serena was pretending was a dress to the spike shoulder pads Georgina was wearing.

Fantasy Costuming keeps the dream alive and we’ve picked four evening looks because the parties were endless and one outfit that is perfect for daytime gallivanting for Blair Waldorf.

Jenny Packham grey dress

This has all the aspects of a Jenny Packham dress that would appeal to a character like Blair Waldorf; it is elegant, feminine and ethereal. The detail on the dress is sparkly without being garish.

Jenny Packham nude dressPink is a big trend this year and this is perfect for the Jenny Packham princess-like playbook and while the neckline is perhaps more Serena than Blair, the delicate beading and romantic nature of this dress screams Blair Waldorf.

Jenny Packham mustard

Breaking up the billowy chiffon looking numbers is this ’70s inspired mustard gown; with the longer sleeves it’s pretty much ready to wear now as the temperatures start to drop. While it looks different from the other dresses it still has the cinched in waist and the embellishments look like built in pearls.

Jenny Packham blue dress

This slash neckline is probably more Blair’s style (not that she hasn’t done cleavage enhancing dresses in the past) and this is another example of exquisite beading on a pastel colored dress. The frilled sheer sleeves are similar to the dress that Blair previously wore on Gossip Girl.

Jenny Packham mustard top, blue skirtWhether Blair is in New York or Paris this beautiful baby blue/mustard affair is perfect for working on the Waldorf fashion empire, or scheming (there will always be scheming). The sheer detail on the skirt is sexy without being too provocative and the burgundy belting adds a dramatic edge to the piece. The only let down is what I’m guessing is a bag but looks like a screwed up jumper. Blair Waldorf would not approve.

New York Fashion Week: Fantasy Costuming with the Tracy Reese Spring 2014 Collection

10 Sep

The fall season is upon us and there’s time for one more fantasy costuming entry. At New York Fashion Week the stunning Tracy Reese Spring 2014 collection was unveiled and the press release describes it as “Sensuality, energy and optimism with an array of bold, spirited styles infused with Afro-Cuban influences to create an aesthetic full of texture and movement.” Bold patterns are something of a favorite here at TV Ate My Wardrobe and the blend of gingham, floral, polka dots and stripes alongside vibrant colors makes this a NYFW highlight.

Instead of picking one show or character we will be following the Burberry Prorsum model and opt for multiple shows and characters. These designs will appeal to a variety of demographics and narrowing the selection down to this amount was a challenge. Reese has used the vibrancy of Havana as an inspiration point and she told The Huffington Post that “The classicism that harks back to the 50’s and even the street culture today is melded and merged — young and old, black and white, everything in between. And everybody’s just enjoying the rhythm.”

Tracy Reese Spring 2014 collection

The first fantasy costuming piece we did was for Jess from New Girl and we tried to mix up Jess’ wardrobe by opting for a more monochromatic look. This colorful polka dot dress is quintessentially Jess; it’s super cute and the cut is incredibly feminine (if you click on the photo you can see the detail). The patterned neckerchief is a beautiful addition and this is my favorite look from the new Tracy Reese collection.

Tracy Reese

I love everything about this; the bright orange hue, the contrasting gingham blue pajama like pants, another great scarf and the bonus backpack with textured looking straps- I’m definitely having a backpack phase at the moment. This is something I can see Mindy wearing on The Mindy Project when she wants to look a bit more casual but also super stylish. Mindy doesn’t tend to wear pants all that often (when she’s not in scrubs or sweats) but I could definitely envision her in something like this.

Tracy Reese red and black stripes

While the henna tattoo is probably not something you would see on The Good Wife’s Alicia Florrick (unless she drank all the wine) this form fitting stripped dress is more her style. Alicia tends to color block her clothes and patterns don’t tend to feature, but as she is now setting up her own firm we might see Alicia switching out some of her standard suits and dresses for something a little more adventurous.

Tracy Reese white

I dipped in and out of Revenge last season as the conspiracy grew into a giant mess; the cliffhanger in the finale is enough to bring me back for now and this white floral dress embodies the picture of innocence that Emily tries to project while she is plotting her REEEEEEEEEVENGE.

Tracy Reese crop top

The full bodied skirt is one trend that I will definitely be embracing this season and while I’m not really a crop top fan, I can totally see Carrie from The Carrie Diaries rocking both of these looks. Yes the show is set in the 1980s, but the costuming has a tendency to pay homage to that time period without worrying about accuracy. This isn’t as bright as some of the other pieces but it is definitely as bold with the big floral print.

Tracy Reese lounge

Olivia Pope would probably not opt for the black and red striped top – though I’d love to see a flash of color in her wardrobe even if it goes against her ‘uniform’ – but those white pants with the black trim detail are perfect Olivia Pope lounge wear. This is where she eats popcorn and somehow doesn’t manage to spill red wine down herself, a feat I am constantly impressed with.

Tracy Reese lapels

On Parks and Recreation, April Ludgate is off to veterinary school and while we’ve already picked out some costuming for her next season this is another back to school look for April. This is probably a slightly more girly look than we are used to seeing, but it doesn’t stray into the bolder palette of this collection and more muted tones are an April staple. The bonus backpack features one of April’s favorite colors – mustard – and will be ideal for all those books she’s soon going to be carrying.

Tracy Reese flowers

On Arrow the Oliver, Diggle, Felicity team is the most fun aspect and while this dress might be outside of Felicity’s usual floral jersey dress comfort zone; it would be perfect for an undercover mission that gets Felicity out from behind the computer and into the field again. It’s super sexy and the embellished detail on this dress is stunning.

Tracy Reese blue

On New Girl Cece’s wardrobe tends to swing between form fitting bodycon when they go out and far less constricting baggy pants and vest when they are lounging around the loft. The above Tracy Reese combination is maybe a little out there for Cece but it would look stunning on her regardless and the two very different types of floral embellishment is power clashing at its finest. She could also donate the gingham strapped backpack to Jess for the new school year.

Fantasy Costuming Fall 2013: Dressing Olivia Pope

23 Jul

TV Ate My Wardrobe’s Fantasy Costuming series took a brief hiatus and now that all of Scandal has been consumed it’s time to turn to one of the most talked about characters currently on TV. Olivia Pope is an interesting figure beyond her clothing of course, but aspects of her wardrobe set her apart from the usual Washington D.C. power suits and the lack of navy and red makes her stand out from the political crowd. Scandal costume designer Lyn Paolo isn’t a stranger to the White House scene as she worked on The West Wing. Even though they share a location Scandal is far removed from the that version of politics and creator Shonda Rhimes told Entertainment WeeklyI feel like The West Wing brought us Washington as we’d all want it to be. And this show brings us Washington as we hope it would never be.”

The costuming of Olivia Pope is far removed from Aaron Sorkin’s politic world (Mellie would probably fit right in as her First Lady pieces are pretty traditional). The first thing that is striking about Olivia is the amount of white she wears and this intentionally reveals several things about how she wants to be perceived – she’s the good guy, she’s not on the red team or blue team and there is a calming presence to her limited and neutral color palette.

Kerry Washington recently tweeted “I’m CRAZY excited about this #Scandal fitting that I am about to have with @LynPaolo – like giddy butterflies kinda excited. Wow” and so to fill in the time between now and the new season we wanted to find some potential outfits for Olivia Pope from all corners of the internet both high end and more affordable. For those who might love Olivia’s wardrobe, but might not want that much white in your wardrobe then we’ve got a few pieces for you. The gowns that Olivia wears are impressive (and sometimes one of a kind) but we’ve decided to focus on work and lounge wear.

French Connection Olivia Pope

French Connection A/W ’13

Feminine tailoring is a key factor when it comes to the Olivia Pope look and this “Pop Dot Woven” jacket and matching pants from French Connection is an affordable way to deliver this sharp style. This outfit creates the all important silhouette and uses the key tones that we see in Olivia’s office wear. The contrast piping breaks down the polka dot texture, as do the black lapels, cuffs and pocket details on the jacket which help give it a structured appearance.

Burberry Spring 2014

Burberry Prorsum S/S ’13

Out of all of Olivia’s amazing clothes it’s not her incredible gowns that we here at TV Ate My Wardrobe covet (though we wouldn’t say no), instead it’s her vast collection of coats that take our fancy. Washington D.C. can get rather chilly in the winter (both the weather and politically) and so it’s only appropriate that she has so many. While we’ve already seen Olivia in a traditional Burberry trench, this more embellished “Double Duchess Caped Trench Coat” from Burberry Prorsum adds a modern twist with the canopy cape. While costume designer Lyn Paolo has said they try to avoid anything that is too catwalk, this version of the Burberry trench maintains the traditional look and enhances it without being too showy.

Carven mint-green

Carven

Mint green works on the Olivia Pope color spectrum and these Carven double crepe pants might be from last season (now on sale with more than half off) but pastel colors are here to stay and feature in collections for the fall. Olivia has worn green before in a slightly warmer shade than this in the episode “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot” that saw a 10 month jump and showed Olivia trying to move on with her life (and failing to do so).  Hopefully if she was to opt for green again it would be under better circumstances; judging from how season 2 ended this is unlikely.

Maison Martin MargielaMaison Martin Margiela MM6

Not only does Olivia have a vast array of coats, but her lounge wear collection is also pretty impressive. Olivia is just as happy at home on the couch eating a bowl of popcorn and drinking red wine as she is fixing things and this grey oversized cape cardigan from Maison Martin Margiela MM6 is perfect. Luxurious knitwear seems like the worst idea as it’s super hot at the moment but come the fall when Scandal returns this won’t feel like such a ridiculous idea.

Reiss

Reiss A/W ’13

Another office look for Olivia and this one maintains feminine and slim-cut styling, while also featuring a harsher edge thanks to the “Ezra” leather skirt. This wouldn’t be the first time we have seen Olivia in leather as she has worn olive leather leggings in the episode “Seven Fifty Two” (paired with a Burberry trench) and of course there are those many leather gloves. Black leather gives off a strong impression but pairing it with the “Mimi” frill neck and sleeve top offers a soft compromise. Olivia is going to have new challenges when Scandal returns so it is likely that her costuming will evolve.

Would these outfit choices get the Olivia Pope approval?

Maison Kitsuné F/W ’13 Collection: Dressing April Ludgate

27 Jun

It’s the third week of TV Ate My Wardrobe’s fantasy costuming series as we take a peek at the new collections for Fall/Winter and beyond. So far we’ve looked at Jess from New Girl sporting French Connection and TV’s most stylish guys with the Burberry Prorsum’s Spring ’14 offerings. Today it’s the turn of a character whose wardrobe I covert as April Ludgate from Parks and Recreation is the reason I’m still on the hunt for the perfect mustard hoodie (it’s a much harder task than it sounds). Season 5 saw April going from disaffected and bored to really honing in on her skills and passions. April has always felt strongly about animals so it isn’t surprising to see her character apply and get accepted into veterinary school. April style points include patterns, knit sweaters, yellow and anything that doesn’t resemble a Leslie Knope pantsuit.

With April’s new job I wanted to find a brand that would allow April to dress as casually as she has in past seasons but adding some more tailored styles. The inspiration behind the new Maison Kitsuné lookbook, which was shot on location in Tokyo and features “the street-yet-chic style of the collections, artfully incorporating tradition and modernity” was just the style I had in mind.  I’ve combined looks from this Tokyo shoot with model/actress Kiko Mizuhara and the standard shoot on the Kitsuné site, as I wanted to include several April-esque outfits that don’t feature in the lookbook . The French label (don’t tell Ron Swanson) features a fox on its label which is perfect for April’s new career aspirations and the Parks department (though for Pawnee a raccoon might be better).

Look5

This is very much a first day of college/work outfit; it’s stylish without looking like April is trying too hard. We know beneath those eye rolls that she cares about a lot of things… ok some things. The deep plum/indigo combination pops without being too overpowering and April tends to wear a lot of these darker versions of colors.

FW13-BarrereetSimon-W-07

Another outfit that displays April’s casual chic look for work and features the Kitsuné fox logo. Foxes are the owl of this season when it comes to sweaters and because I already featured the French Connection version for Jess a couple of weeks ago, I’ve opted for the sneaky fox over the fantastic (Mr) fox jumper which you can see here. The sunglasses will ensure that April doesn’t have to engage or make eye contact with anyone that she doesn’t want to.

April

A mustard yellow knit sweater is April Ludgate all over. The rose probably isn’t.

FW13-BarrereetSimon-W-38

April has a number of hoodies (and not just the dream mustard one) so this slightly more tailored version might work as an upgrade for those days at vet school.

FW13-BarrereetSimon-W-06

While you’d probably never suggest that April is particularly cute and girly with her style, she also isn’t adverse to wearing dresses and the one above feels like casual wear that could double as an office outfit or even for a trip to the Snakehole Lounge – when she’s not Janet Snakehole of course. I think the disdainful look on this models face would totally sell this collection to April.

Would these outfits get the April Ludgate seal of approval?

Burberry Prorsum Spring 2014 Preview: Dressing TV’s Most Stylish Guys

19 Jun

Tom Haverford from Parks and Recreation and New Girl’s Schmidt are two of the most fashion-conscious male characters on TV at the moment and as the new Burberry Prorsum Spring 2014 collection debuted this week at a runway show in London, we wanted to continue our fantasy costuming series. The new collection features a burst of primary colors, knits, the famous Burberry trench coat and tailored suits; they are the perfect look for some of TV’s most fashionable male characters.

Burberry polka dot

Schmidt would definitely have a classic Burberry trench coat in his closet and he’d also be down with the no socks thing, this is the perfect work look for Schmidt. The polka dot scarf could be a step too far (or look like he borrowed it from Jess), but Schmidt has shown an interest in scarves last season on New Girl when he was trying to impress their new neighbors. If Kanye wore this scarf then so would Schmidt and Nick would make fun of him for doing so.

Burberry

Tom Haverford has managed to turn his love of expensive clothes into a legitimate business with Rent-a-Swag and when we return for season 6 of Parks and Recreation he’s going to have some serious competition as he refused to sell his business and a new store is opening up across the street. Tom is also still working for the Parks department and he needs a suitable but stylish outfit in case Leslie organizes another outdoor retreat or camping session. The above outfit is perfect for this; though don’t expect Tom to get too involved as he won’t want to get any mud on those shoes.

Burberry 2014

Ben Wyatt is a little more practical when it comes to his wardrobe on Parks and Recreation and while I can’t see him in those sunglasses the turquoise skinny tie is enough to brighten up his outfits without turning him into a Tom clone. Tom might give his fashion props if he ditched the plaid once in a while.

Burberry Spring 2014

Another fan of the plaid shirt is Hannibal’s Will Graham and while he has more to be concerned with than what he is wearing, a splash of color might stop him from blending into the background and disappearing into himself. Hugh Dancy used to be a face of Burberry and was also at the show yesterday at Kensington Gardens and so it only feels right that Will gets a fashion upgrade next season. That’s if he can get out of the other orange attire that he is wearing in this season 1 finale promo.

Burberry Carrie

Walt on The Carrie Diaries is a big fan of a knitted sweater and we’ve already seen him sport a similar blue shade. This outfit looks like it could be from the ’80s without looking like a strict ’80s recreation, something that The Carrie Diaries is fond of doing. Walt has been spending time in New York with Carrie over the summer and this is the perfect attire for Walt to blend in with the city look without trying too hard. Those blue suede shoes are adorable and really set the whole thing off. The sunglasses wouldn’t seem too ridiculous in the 1980s setting either.

burberry TV

When Cary wore a hoodie last season on The Good Wife my Twitter feed lit up like a Christmas tree. As Cary has set up a new firm with Alicia I think it’s time to bring back some of that casual wear as they’re bound to be working all kinds of hours to get the business up and running. This works perfectly as the hooded knit can be swapped out for a jacket for those all important meetings.

Some of the pieces in this collection by Christopher Bailey for Burberry Prorsum are probably too catwalk for even TV’s most fashion aware characters, but the sharp tailoring is definitely something that wouldn’t look out of place on these shows. Are there any other male characters that you can see wearing these types of outfits?

French Connection Autumn Preview: Dressing Jessica Day

12 Jun

New Girl isn’t back for a few months and the cast members are busy with their summer projects, but as some fashion brands such as French Connection are unveiling their fall collections, here at TV Ate My Wardrobe we thought we would pick out a few potential looks for certain characters on the shows we love (and whose wardrobes we covet). New Girl has been a big part of both the “Look of the Week” and more in-depth articles so it is the perfect place to start with this fantasy costuming feature.

Costume designer Debra McGuire has been fantastic at subtly evolving  Jess’ look during season 2 telling Entertainment Weekly that the sexier costumes are due to the storyline, there seems to be more sensuality and sexuality going on.” Bold colors and patterns (mostly stripes or polka dots) are a Jessica Day staple, but as monochrome is on trend this season we are likely to see more of this bleeding into the costuming choices. We have chosen three different outfits from the new French Connection A/W 13 collection that we could imagine Jess wearing.

French connection horses

The Hatched Horses Cap Sleeve Dress is the kind of outfit that Jess could wear at her new teaching job, especially if it was paired with a black blazer. This type of dress can be dressed up or down, the model in the photo has gone for the latter option (thanks to the flats) but with some pumps Jess could be out on a date with maybe beau Nick. The horse pattern is perfect for Jess even though it deviates from her usual stripes or polka dots as it is still whimsical and girly. The matching box clutch might be a too many horses for one outfit, but it would certainly be a perfect accessory for one of the many bright pieces in Jess’ closet.

Solar-Pleated-Dress

Before you say this is something Cece would wear as the Solar Pleated Dress is edgier than Jess’ girly style, let’s look at how Jess’ clothes occasionally feature an unexpected item. This is usually when Jess is out of her comfort zone and in the season 2 episode “Models” Jess wore an outfit that is reminiscent of the one above. While that night ended in a falling out with Cece (and a boob slap fight) it would be good to see Jess step away from a bold color palette and wear something like the dress above. This dress has a strong structure and the pleated leather-look skirt adds a sense of frivolity. The horse box clutch from the first outfit could make this more Jess and despite it being all black, the shape and fitted quality makes this more of a Jess dress than first impressions might suggest. Zooey Deschanel wore a black ensemble to the Fox Upfront Presentation and showed that a lack of color is also in her fashion wheelhouse.

78AAA_model_3

The Fox Knitted Jumper might be considered the most obvious choice of the three looks but so far the New Girl costume design team has stayed away from overt animal motifs like this one, perhaps because it is too on the cutesy nose. New Girl has come far enough now to embrace both the sexier side of this character along with the ribbon hat wearing Jess. This would be perfect for those days in the loft paired with either a pair of skinny jeans, short wool skirt or high waisted shorts (as long as Schmidt hasn’t put a ban on them again). A fox jumper on the Fox network could be an eye roll moment, but I think they could make it work (said in my best Tim Gunn voice)

What do you think of these outfit choices for Jess?
