2016 Emmy Nomination Acting Wish List

13 Jul

Emmy nominations will be announced tomorrow (Thursday, July 14) and that means it is time to offer up some quick thoughts regarding who I would like to see on the shortlist. I’ve split my list into drama, mini-series and comedy with some shows getting multiple nomination hopes. These are all actors who have submitted their work for Emmy consideration and some of these are repeats from last year’s wish list.

A mix of certain locks, potential first timers and complete outsiders make up these choices and while I am sure there are some amazing performances that are not included below this is the list of actors I have gone for.

Dramathe americansMatthew Rhys and Keri Russell

Every year The Americans tops its previous season with Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell taking levels of soul crushing heartache to new heights. It was hard not to spend half of any review I wrote praising the leads for how much they manage to convey with just a look and the number of ways they manage to devastate, but I get to repeat myself here for those that missed that.

They’re not the only Americans actors who deserve a nod this year with Alison Wright turning Poor Martha into something so much more than a tragic lovelorn figure. I would like to this show reap all the awards this year and have my usual gif lined up for when this doesn’t happen. Again. The Leftovers TCAJustin Theroux, Carrie Coon, Regina King

The Leftovers hit new highs in season 2 and relocating to Texas was a huge part of this. Three scenes really stand out; the first is when Nora wonders if there’s been a second departure when she wakes up to find Kevin is gone. A desperate phone call to emergency service is followed by a desperate hug when Kevin walks in through the door which quickly shifts to anger that he put her through this. The second comes when Nora gets Erika to take the questionnaire she has given to countless others and as the camera pushes in on both actresses we get to see the best of both Carrie Coon and Regina King. The third and final scene I want to highlight comes from the season finale and when I heard this clip on a recent Vulture podcast it made me cry; when Justin Theroux sings “Homeward Bound” the tears and snot flows freely and it tops off an incredible season.Krystal Orphan BlackTatiana Maslany

Even in this fourth season of Orphan Black I still manage to forget that Tatiana Maslany tends to be a least 50% of the characters in any one scene and that she can break my heart in an instant. Caitriona BalfeCaitriona Balfe

While I’m on the subject of heartbreak which is a common theme among all my picks; Caitriona Balfe delivered a raw and emotionally devastating performance when Claire experienced a huge loss midway through season 2. “Faith” is the ideal Emmy showcase episode, but Balfe has delivered on a number of levels this year showcasing Claire’s strengths and vulnerability in equal measure.UnREALShiri Appleby

On UnREAL Shiri Appleby as Rachel teeters on the edge of falling apart at every turn; she is fantastic at her job but that means a whole lot of questionable actions and Appleby conveys both the conflict and excitement in the manipulation of the Everlasting contestants that she gets off on.

Mini-Series

THE PEOPLE v. O.J. SIMPSON: AMERICAN CRIME STORY "Marcia, Marcia, Marcia" Episode 106 (Airs Tuesday, March 8, 10:00 pm/ep) -- Pictured: (l-r) Sarah Paulson a Marcia Clark, Sterling K. Brown as Christopher Darden. CR: Ray Mickshaw/FXThe mini-series category is stacked this year and I’m hoping that both Sarah Paulson and Sterling K. Brown will have their names called out on tomorrow. Paulson is pretty much a lock for her incredible portrayal of Marcia Clark and while Brown is more of an outside chance I will be disappointed if someone like John Travolta (because he is a movie star) gets nominated ahead of him. For the chemistry between Brown and Paulson alone they deserve an Emmy nod with late night office intimate dancing and a look in the hotel corridor that had me screaming KISS HIM; I did not expect American Crime Story to result in shipping of any kind. Fargo - Peggy in stripesKirsten Dunst

On Fargo this season Peggy Blumquist became a new TV style icon and Kirsten Dunst took a character who could have felt incredibly cartoony and delivered something a lot more nuanced. Wanting something better than the life she has and ending up in a murdery cat and mouse game, Dunst makes Peggy a tragic figure we root for and shake our head at while also giving me a good reason why I have kept so many magazines.

Oscar Isaac

I’m not just picking Oscar Isaac because I want to see him in a tux come September, but because Show Me a Hero is still something that almost a year later feels like a gut punch when I think about it. Isaac also manages to work that mustache and is delightful in the moments where he fixes up the house in dad jeans while listening to Bruce Springsteen.

ComedyGretchen You're the Worst 2.04Aya Cash

A lot of the performances I have chosen have involved some element of crushing heartbreak and this isn’t just relegated to drama; Aya Cash and You’re the Worst took the comedies that make me cry to new levels this year and this exploration of depression was an unexpected and welcome turn from one of my favorite shows on TV.

Crazy Ex GirlfriendRachel Bloom

I am late to the Crazy Ex-Girlfriend party having only started (and finished) the show last week and Rachel Bloom is doing such a wide range of things both in front and behind the camera. There are the song performances (and I have a number of these swirling through my head) coupled with the range of emotions from the funny to the agonizing and I think we have found a common theme among my nomination choices.

Aziz AnsariAziz Ansari

Another creator/star that stands out this year is Aziz Ansari with his Netflix series Master of None and for things that get stuck in my head I have been saying “The Sickening… It’s happening!” a lot this year. Also for getting in my favorite passage from The Bell Jar into the season finale in such an interesting way and gifting us with amazing weekend date ideas, showing the difference between experiences walking home if your are a dude or a woman and highlighting diversity on TV/film issues. I hope to see multiple nominations for Ansari.

Jane the Virgin 2.02 stripes

Gina Rodriguez

Another case of a comedy that makes me cry just as much as it makes me laugh and Gina Rodriguez delivers in both arenas. Season 2 saw Jane juggling motherhood, grad school and so many romantic triangle situations; it is the relationships between the women on Jane the Virgin that really hits my sweet spot and the chemistry Rodriguez has with her co-stars is a huge part of this charm.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

8 Jul

A relatively quiet week on the red carpet front what with the holiday weekend (for candids check out “Behind the Insta-Scenes“), but we’ve still got plenty of sartorial treats from sportswear at Wimbledon, what to wear while watching tennis, patterns and another Interview Magazine editorial to salivate over.
img_3847Nike produced a boho floaty dress, which would be great for the beach or Coachella. Less great for playing tennis in. Good job, guys. Serena Williams escaped this calamity and opted instead for a look that is both stylish and practical with a very sporty top and a pleated skirt; mixing contemporary with traditional. If only the pleated skirts we wore for games at high school looked this good.img_3848Giving great style both in victory and in motion with this ballerina like shot. Serena Williams is incredible on every level.img_3846This is from week 1 of Wimbledon, but I somehow missed Kim Sears wearing a fantastic floral Kate Spade dress that featured in NYFW Fantasy Costuming last year. A departure from the first time Kim Sears graced these pages wearing the best sweater responding to a swearing ‘controversy’ at the Australian Open.img_3840Sophie Turner goes for simple chic on Day 10 of Wimbledon in a white shirt and pencil skirt.
img_3837Keeping on the Game of Thrones track with Maisie Williams at the Serpentine Summer Party killing it in a variety of green patterned pieces fit for Emerald City; a floral Milly frock and matching Louboutin shoes and clutch. I’m not crazy about the choker because of my general choker feelings, but it works with this look and Williams’ general 90s loving vibe.img_3841Janelle Monáe does a very different and incredible looking ladysuit in Giuseppe Zanotti at the Queen Sugar screening in New Orleans. It can be hard to make hats work, but every single thing about the styling from H to T (oh hey Tyra) is cool as fuck.  img_3842Interview Magazine has been very good to us recently and we’re going to end this week with some much needed Idris Elba. The photos include a variety of styling from suits to shirts to vests with the above being my favorite from the set. In the interview with Jon Favreau, Elba discusses a number of things include his desire to direct, recent projects and his TV background:

“Television is where I cut my teeth. One of my first jobs was in a soap opera, five days a week. And what I found is, although there are different directors coming in and different crews, you just lived in your character. It’s the nature of the story, the ongoing story, and it can get deeper and deeper.”

It is well worth reading the whole thing.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

6 Jul

The holiday weekend means plenty of patriotic style and a whole lot of sunshine. Plus the Orange is the New Black cast head to Canada, some exits and anticipated returning shows from the Instagram TV highlights.

Jessica Williams has left The Daily Show and I am so excited for what she will do next. Williams’ podcast 2 Dope Queens with Phoebe Robinson got me through an emotionally tough train ride home at the end of last week; making me laugh when all I wanted to do was cry so I am extra grateful for that. Plus this photo from the Jon Stewart era is amazing.

Makeup artist Tina Turnbow captured Keri Russell getting ready for her Today Show appearance where she wore a very cool floral pussy bow blouse and talked her new movie, The Americans and Spy Baby.

Last week the OITNB cast celebrated New York Pride and now they have ventured up to Toronto for the Pride parade that took place on Sunday (July 3). Samira Wiley has another really fantastic custom Milly top that I am coveting hard.

More OITNB Toronto Pride partying.

Keeping on the OITNB track here is a season 4 behind the scenes shot and this one is giving me all the feelings.

By now you have probably seen many photos from the annual Taylor Swift Fourth of July Squad weekend and I’m going to keep on the OITNB theme with this one of Uzo Aduba. Yes that water slide does look amazing. Yes I love this Vulture post on the whole thing which harks back to their amazing Gossip Girl recaps.

For all your July 4th patriotic clothing needs look no further than the amazing Dick from 1999 starring Kirsten Dunst and Michelle Williams. This was my dream teen lady pairing and I heart this movie hard.

Jaws is the ultimate Forth of July movie (sorry Independence Day) and Aya Cash’s photo of this very on point tat is very cool.

More UnREAL off camera joy and Jeffery Bowyer-Chapman and Denée Chapman are enjoying a very crowded looking Brooklyn park while celebrating the holiday weekend.

More from the UnREAL cast and I love how much Constance Zimmer loves this bag of popcorn.

If you miss The Office well then Angela Kinsey has a treat for you as she has posted a bunch of old photos from the set including that time in season 1 when Amy Adams guest starred.

Very cute iZombie co-star hangouts with some bonus dog pals.

I am very excited about this and in non shocking news Aubrey Plaza is wearing a dress which is giving me full heart eyes.

Mr Robot returns a week today (!) and I hope we get to see a lot more of all three ladies in season 2. Please and thank you.

Alias Reunion in Paris

4 Jul

Paris played a very important part in the relationship of Sydney Bristow and Will Tippin on Alias and it was also the setting for an Alias reunion at the weekend. At the Atelier Versace Haute Couture fashion show on Sunday (July 3) Jennifer Garner and Bradley Cooper caught up while taking in the stylish sights (Garner wore Versace to to the Oscars this year).   Yes there’s a lot of feelings going on here because while Vaughn was Sydney’s OTP I was always partial to Will and Syd; their season 3 hookup is one of my favorite Alias moments as it played on both the sadness of this moment and the history between these two characters. Plus any occasion where they wore disguises together was always a hoot. Also here is that best Will Tippin moment from the aforementioned S1 in gag reel form.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

1 Jul

So many sequins and bold color on Out of the Box this week with looks from the BET Awards, movie premieres and other red carpet shindigs bringing all the summer dress delights. Yara ShahidiYara Shahidi super fun and super colorful Tracy Reese dress for the 2016 BET Awards is playing into two of my great loves; stripes and sparkles. The teenage Black-ish star has picked out a look that is both age appropriate and stands out. Gold vintage Tommy Hilfiger stacked heels are the perfect shoe as they shimmer without clashing. For more on Shahidi’s getting ready process head to Teen Vogue.Andra DayMore bold sequins at the BET Awards with singer Andra Day delivering on vintage looking glam and this entire ensemble is stunning right down to purple Moschino pumps. Aubrey Plaza miniA Prada sequin mini for Aubrey Plaza and this is ultimate Megan Draper has just hit California attire. So I am of course so here for it.Jenny Slate, Ellie Kemper, Lake BellI would like to see a live action movie with Jenny Slate, Ellie Kemper and Lake Bell and not just The Secret Life of Pets, which is what they are promoting here. Dress pretty for all three ladies and this was also the occasion where Jenny Slate made things red carpet official with Chris Evans.Lauren AmbroseGlorious green caftan at the ready for Lauren Ambrose at the Amazon pilots event. I like this super boho look a lot more than the Interestings pilot (I loved the book, but think the show misses a lot of what made this group charming). I really like Ambrose and have high hopes that if it does go to series they will fix these issues.Cush JumboAt the Tarzan premiere Cush Jumbo is also doing the casual glam thing in Michael Kors and this really makes me want to grab a cocktail with her.
