Out of the Box: Look of the Week

20 Sep

It’s the Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday which means there are parties aplenty and with the earlier Creative Arts Emmys happening last Sunday we also have some winners looking fabulous as they pick up their accolades. So let’s get straight to it.

Creative Arts Emmy Awards Outstanding Guest Actor In A Drama Series - Dan Bucatinsky

Dan Bucatinsky plays Cyrus’ husband James on Scandal and he picked up the Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series on Sunday night. It was a tough category that also featured Michael J. Fox (The Good Wife) and Rupert Friend (Homeland) and in a heartfelt speech he mentioned how wonderful it is that he can thank both his onscreen husband and real life husband. Wearing an amazing Alexander McQueen Dogtooth Jacquard tuxedo, Bucatinsky showed there are options for men beyond just the standard black tux and the Scandal cast is one of the most stylish both on screen and on the red carpet .

Carrie Preston Emmy

The Good Wife has a huge amount of excellent guest stars and Carrie Preston plays one of my favorite recurring characters; Elsbeth Tascioni. Tascioni’s quirks could come across as forced but Preston shines in this role and so I was delighted to see her win for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series on Sunday. I’m also a sucker for a cape and while most of the red carpet looks at the Creative Arts Emmys played it safe, it was good to see Preston trying something a little different.

Kerry Washington Emmy party

People magazine named Kerry Washington the World’s Best Dressed Woman this week and I’m definitely not going to dispute this title; who else could pull of this bubblegum pink ruffled Halston Heritage dress without looking like a Barbie doll?! The white shoes/clutch and matching lipstick to the dress color could be seen as accessorizing overkill but for some reason it works. All eyes will be on Washington on Sunday and she is high on my list of most anticipated red carpet arrivals. The Outstanding Actress in a Drama category is incredibly strong and my loyalty is split three ways between Washington, Elisabeth Moss and Claire Danes.

Tina Fey, Allison Williams

From last night’s Hollywood Reporter Nominees Night party both Tina Fey and Allison Williams have opted for the simple and effective black dress approach. It might be the similar outfit choices and natural makeup look but they could definitely play sisters in something. Along with Kerry Washington’s gown another thing on my Emmy anticipated list is what Amy Poehler has planned for the announcement of the Outstanding Actress in a Comedy category that Tina Fey is part of; previous years have included a silly glasses, mixed up speeches and a pageant approach. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are also slated to present at the Emmys this weekend.

Candice Accola

While The Vampire Diaries isn’t nominated for anything, Awesome Vampire Caroline herself Candice Accola attended the Hollywood Reporter party and looked, well awesome. This is another occasion where matching lipstick color to the dress actually works and while the nude shoes are not my favorite this is a really good look for a party that doesn’t require a full on gown. The dress is really cute with the bow belt and Rorschach like image (it’s definitely a butterfly).

Darby Stanchfield

As I’ve already mentioned the Scandal cast are just as stylish off screen as they are on it and Darby Stanchfield bookends this week’s Scandal filled post. This outfit could look a bit too business but as it’s a skirt and crop top this gives it a party edge. The clutch and statement ring add flare to the look and I love the belted detail that helps break up the grey tweed. Once again Stanchfield has avoided her Abby like super straight hair and opted for the wavy approach; as always I have long auburn hair envy.

TV Costume Designers and Impacting Fashion

19 Sep

TV Ate My Wardrobe isn’t surprised to read that TV costume designers are having an impact on fashion at the moment, as The New York Times proposes in an article today. This site was born out of an interest and passion for costuming on TV and while other avenues are explored on a daily basis this is still at the heart of what we do here. Costuming can aid the storytelling process, but we also look at trends on the runway that filter through to stores. What is featured in magazine editorials can impact what we see on screen, but as we have seen with shows like Sex and the City and Mad Men they can have just as much influence on style as the fashion houses themselves.

Olivia Pope leather gloves

One aspect this article from The New York Times discusses comes from Pretty Little Liars costume designer Mandi Line as she explains that in her interview she stated “If you let me make fashion the fifth character on this show, people will watch it just for the clothes.” This is something that can probably be said about a show like Gossip Girl which I have recently realized that I miss purely for the clothes. The way costuming can appeal can be dependent on the target demographic and with something like Pretty Little Liars Instagram reveals how fans of the show compare their clothes to the ones they see on screen. Costuming can help create buzz and a show like Scandal has benefited from these types of discussions, especially now that star Kerry Washington is covering major fashion magazines and landing on every best dressed list. Lyn Paolo has done an excellent job not only with Olivia Pope’s wardrobe, but with each character’s clearly defined look. In the pilot episode of Scandal the notion that they are “Gladiators in suits” was repeated and now both Olivia’s team and fans of the show use this moniker.

NG_Neighbors-Sc9_0017 The time between when a TV show is made and when it airs is often relatively short and so this immediacy means that the clothes we see on screen are still often in stores. While you might not be able to afford the Prada purse that Olivia Pope uses, the J Crew sweater that Jess wears on New Girl could be a more affordable option. Websites such as What Would Zooey Deschanel Wear? and its broader ranging sister site Worn on TV not only find where to buy the clothes you see on screen, but also cheaper similar looking alternatives.

Elementary costume designer Rebecca Hofherr talks about how “TV deals with realistic issues and more realistic clothing” as opposed to film which might deal with more fantastical subjects. While I’m not a proponent of any TV vs. film debates I think TV can have a bigger impact on personal tastes because shows air on a weekly basis and so we see style evolution over a period of time. Characters become familiar to us and so as viewers it can be easier to identify with them and their look. There’s also a variety so one week I might see Joan Watson wear a scarf I really like and another will have me adding an April Ludgate shirt to my always growing wish list. You can sample many different looks across many different shows.

banana-republic-mad-men

This also covers period costuming and as I’ve mentioned Mad Men has influenced fashion in a major way and costume designer Janie Bryant has managed to create a brand thanks to her excellent work on Mad Men. Bryant has developed pieces with Maidenform (also a client of Sterling Cooper), Banana Republic and Brooks Brothers. There is also a reality show on the way from Janie Bryant that will give aspiring designers a chance to show off their skills by recreating classic Hollywood film costumes and celebrity signature styles.  Having just finished watching the Masters of Sex pilot I can confirm that there was a high amount of sweater and coat envy; as the colder season approaches I’m sure this will have some impact on forthcoming purchases even though it is set in the mid 1950s.

It’s not surprising to read that Good Wife designer Daniel Lawson is developing a line of clothes for professional women, or that Lyn Paolo is contemplating a book that will include Scandal related tips. Eric Daman whose previous credits include Sex and the City and Gossip Girl is now the costume designer for The Carrie Diaries and one of his non-TV related projects is a prom collection for Charlotte Russe. Girls and Orange is the New Black’s Jenn Rogien is currently one of Gap’s “Styled By” experts producing a series of style tutorials. For these costume designers they are diversifying their work and using their expertise on projects that relate to the TV work that we are familiar with. We have seen what these designers can do on screen so we know where their strengths lie and so there is already implied trust that they can produce excellent work outside of the TV show they design for.

A costume designer isn’t there to simply make the characters look good or to sell clothes; they help add another layer to the storytelling process and can inform the viewer to certain characteristics without a single word being said.

New Breaking Bad Poster: “It Was All in the Chemistry”

19 Sep

There are just two episodes left of Breaking Bad and AMC has released a poster that celebrates both the show and the fans. The image is a simple one of where it all started; we got to see the RV once again in the last episode as part of a flashback that showed Walt’s first meth related lie to Skyler. A lot has happened since then and the second part of season 5 has been firing on all cylinders; I watched “Ozymandias” a few days ago and it’s left a big impression. If babies could get nominated for things then the kid(s) playing baby Holly deserves something for “Mama” improv and for breaking my already smooshed heart in the fire truck at the end of the episode.

AMC has also announced that the last two installments will be slightly longer than normal and will run at 75-minutes with commercials; plan for extra snacks/drinks (the latter will definitely be needed) because the tension is sure to be high.

Breaking Bad The Final Episodes PosterThe last episode airs on AMC Sunday, September 29 (good luck all other shows that are premiering that night) and will be available on Netflix on Monday 30 in the UK.

New Girl Season 3 Premiere: Going “All In”

18 Sep

Season openers can be a tricky endeavor, particularly when the previous episode has culminated in a highly anticipated union and the momentum has been broken by a summer off. With a show like New Girl a lot of hype has been directed at Nick and Jess and if you were wondering what they’re relationship status is the repeated “all in” gets both the characters and the audience used to the idea that they can be a couple.

NewGirl-EP301_AllIn-Sc21_01857

The season premiere starts where we left off; with The Vaccines “I Always Knew” playing as Nick and Jess drove away from the abandoned wedding. After making a roadside stop to consummate the fact that they didn’t call it off, they end up standing at their front door. Neither are ready to cross the threshold as they’ve only been a couple for 30 minutes and their roommates are already being incredibly demanding – ok Schmidt’s is the demanding one, Winston just wants to puzzle. The prospect of returning to normalcy is too much and the pair head off to Mexico to spend some quality time together living out of the back of Jess’ car. We don’t get to see exactly how both of their wedding outfits end up quite as wrecked as they do, but it works better this way. The same can be said for the lack of explanation as to why Winston is wearing a hoodie as pants other than his propensity to get weird.

In Mexico away from the apartment Nick thinks that he can make this relationship work and he’s willing to shred his passport so he doesn’t have to go home and risk losing Jess. This is Nick’s irrational side coming out, the part that thinks he isn’t worthy and he’s more likely to fuck everything up if he lets this side get the better of him. As we have seen with Nick’s previous relationships he’s a fan of the self-sabotage and he doesn’t want this one to go the same way. It’s a different start to dating thanks to their roommate status and this is enough to send Nick into a tailspin of not wanting to leave Paradise Nick and Paradise Jess behind. It doesn’t help that Schmidt and Winston are in full on bickering mode, coupled with Schmidt’s relationship drama and so resort jail is of course far more appealing – they let him watch Ugly Betty after all.

Home is where they have to go and Jess delivers a heartfelt speech; Craigslist gets major props and for once it isn’t sex, drugs or murder related. Jess is the voice of reason on this occasion, not just in relation to Nick but with all of them as she points out that they’re “a family” and how “there is no us without Schmidt and Winston.” It’s a dysfunctional dynamic and the loft situation is going to provide a wealth of stories in the coming weeks. As far as this season opener goes the Jess and Nick stuff plays well, Jake Johnson and Zooey Deschanel still have oodles of chemistry and because they are together there is a lot of kissing; we know how well they do that.

One issue with this episode is how disjointed it feels and not just because Nick and Jess are in Mexico while Schmidt and Winston are back home. There’s a lot to cram into 22 minutes and at points it seems like certain aspects of the story have been cut out (the promo photos show that in one cut Nick isn’t the only person to get tasered). It’s understandable why these cuts have to be made for time, but on this occasion it was noticeable – maybe as a result of the promotional materials.

First episodes back are meant to refresh the viewer with what has occurred and lay out where things are headed, so it’s not surprising that the momentum the back half of season 2 created gets disrupted. Schmidt still has his decision to make as he tells both Elizabeth and Cece that he has chosen them. Cece is the regular cast member and Merritt Wever will be making her way back to Nurse Jackie soon so this takes some of the tension out of this process. Considering Schmidt’s duplicitous behavior it’s likely that he will end up with neither of them (for now).

Now to Winston and his puzzling; the main puzzle being will he get his own ‘A’ story this season? While I enjoy the lengths they push Winston too with his love of badgers and forgotten birthdays, there comes a time when Lamorne Morris deserves a bigger piece of the New Girl pie. Over at Vulture New Girl creator Liz Meriwether discusses this aspect of his character saying “That’s the level we like, where he’s on some crazy mission for some stupid thing but the stakes are so high for him. To me, that’s just hilarious, and Lamorne is so good at going to those broad places but keeping an emotional reality at the center of it so it doesn’t feel out in space.” While I totally agree with this notion, I hope there is more for him this year and maybe the return of Coach will give him a source of conflict beyond the realization that he is color blind – points to Schmidt for the line of the episode “If you think those shoes are brown, what color do you think you are?”

Winston does take it too far and not just with his jigsaw obsession as a moment where he has to save Schmidt ends with him admitting to wanting Cece’s underwear because he wanted to sew them into his underpants. Cece reacted accordingly. As we saw in “First Date” last season, Schmidt and Winston together creates these ridiculous scenarios and it gives both Max Greenfield and Lamorne Morris a chance to unleash their crazy; the argument where they literally argue in circles is absurd but brilliant.

We end the episode back at the front door of apartment 4D, flummoxed as Nick doesn’t carry a key – “there’s always someone at home” – and a mini argument ends in making out. We’re back to where we started and this mini adventure to Mexico might not have been a completely satisfying start to the season, but it’s laid the groundwork and I’m confident that the season will pick up from here. It’s also pretty great to be back with these characters and to no longer be tiptoeing around a “will they/won’t they story.”

London Fashion Week: Color Blocking and Patterns

17 Sep

It’s the last day of London Fashion Week and the bold color/print trend that started in New York has continued as more designers debut their Spring 2014 collections. We’re going to be taking a look at runway photos from Burberry Prorsum, Christopher Kane, House of Holland, Jasper Conran, Roksanda Ilincic, Temperley London and Mary Katrantzou. As usual we’re going to play a bit of Fantasy Costuming with a quick fire round.

Burberry dots and stripes

From Burberry Prorsum this polka dot/striped infusion outfit might be a bit out there for work wear – if Ugly Betty was still on I would suggest this for Amanda – and while Robin from How I Met Your Mother tends to play it safe I’d like to see them be a bit more daring with her costuming. Failing this Leslie Knope would totally rock that blouse on Parks and Recreation.

Christopher Kane

The Vampire Diaries is heading to college in season 5 and this funky Christopher Kane mini dress could serve as an excellent outfit for Elena. This is Mystic Falls so parties are aplenty but this will give them a chance to swap their fancy frocks for something less constricting. The blood stains might be easier to get out too.

House of Holland checks

House of Holland’s mixed checked skirt and blouse is a new twist on picnic blanket chic and while both pieces together might give you a headache, I can see Jess from New Girl wearing either one of these as it matches her bright and girly style.

Jasper Conran yellow

Masters of Sex is set in the 1950s and while they might want to stick with vintage, if they want something new with an old twist then look no further than Jasper Conran’s Peter Pan collar dress as it would look good under Virginia Johnson’s lab coat. This is my most anticipated new fall show; for both the costuming and because I’m so happy to see Lizzy Caplan in a starring role.

Roksanda Ilincic yellow

I basically really want this Roksanda Ilincic creation for myself (yellow is my weakness) and if we were to ever see Olivia Pope divert from her usual color palette then I’d love to see this on Scandal. Failing that can Kerry Washington wear this on the red carpet?

Temperly long dress

It might just be because of this shot but this dress by Temperley London looks like it needs someone to strut with purpose in it and this is something that Alicia Florrick tends to do whenever she is in evening wear as all parties on The Good Wife tend to feature legal related woes. Who wouldn’t want a dress they could be dramatic and swish in? Once again this goes against the usual color blocking that we see in Alicia’s costuming, but it’s a beautiful gown that would look stunning on Julianna Margulies.

Mary Katrantzou shoes

Carrie Bradshaw is all about the shoes and the 1980s version in The Carrie Diaries would look amazing in these Mary Katrantzou brogues.

Music Monday Flashback: Doing the Chicken Dance with New Girl

16 Sep

New Girl is back this week and to celebrate its return we’re looking back to the episode that cemented those Nick and Jess chemistry tingles. While we wait to find out what happened after Cece called off her wedding and Jess and Nick drove off into the sunset, let’s enjoy another New Girl wedding moment from early in the season 1. Like most sitcoms New Girl took a few weeks to figure out its strengths and weaknesses; this episode is when it became clear that Jake Johnson and Zooey Deschanel have great chemistry (the drunken photo booth scene is one of the most gifed Nick and Jess moments prior to The Kiss).

The final scene in “Wedding” is hilarious and touching; New Girl’s strength is that it can flip between moments that are ridiculous and ones that resonate emotionally. Jess has been banned from doing the chicken dance – she’s been told to “suppress the Jess” – and so by Nick leading this moment and the other guys joining in, it shows that they are beginning to accept her weirdness and are becoming friends. Having them all dance in this manner to Phil Collins “Groovy Kind of Love” gives it a level of absurdity that New Girl has come to embrace and excel at . Also Nick needs to dress like that more often.

New Girl returns for season 3 tomorrow (Tuesday 17) on Fox at 9/8c. Watch a sneak peek here.

Scandal Season 3 Promo Shots: The Storm is Coming

13 Sep

The cast of Scandal took to Twitter yesterday and each revealed their new individual promo shot with the theme “The Storm is Coming.” While it’s hard to exactly measure how much this social media interaction from the cast helps with their ratings, I think it is safe to say that Scandal is one of the most talked about shows on social media and when it returns on October 3 it will be interesting to see if there is a significant increase in the amount of Scandal related tweets. All summer my feed has been full of people catching up all things Olivia Pope (myself included) and so the prospect of the new season is making me a little giddy.

At the end of season 2 the press found out that Olivia is the other woman in Fitz’s life and it was revealed that Olivia’s father is the highly influential B613 boss Rowan, so yes a storm is indeed coming. In the promo world this storm goes from metaphorical to real and the cast get wet to varying degrees and now I’m wondering what it means that some get umbrellas while others get completely soaked – this is probably due to all the past theorizing for shows like Lost or Mad Men where every single detail means something (or nothing at all). When is an umbrella just an umbrella?

Olivia Pope Scandal S3Olivia is probably the one weathering the biggest storm (ok Fitz is probably equal on this matter) and she is the one who is used to fixing other people; what will it mean for the dynamic of Olivia Pope & Associates now that Olivia is the one that needs help? Will she finally open herself up to everyone? Olivia gets an umbrella because of course she is prepared and this amazing Burberry white trench is the very same one I picked for the Olivia Pope Fantasy Costuming piece, a Fantasy Costuming first!

Fitz Scandal S3The bowed down position is reminiscent of the famous John F. Kennedy portrait (recently recreated by Rob Lowe for “Killing Kennedy”). Fitz has a lot to contemplate after the outing of Olivia; is this one scandal too many for this administration to survive? And yes, Fitz gets an umbrella.

Mellie Scandal S3This is my favorite shot from this collection and I like to think she is saying “Come at me with all you have got!” Mellie doesn’t need an umbrella. She’s also dressed in dark colors signifying that she is Olivia’s opposite and we know just how far Mellie is willing to go to keep her place in the White House. Mellie is one of the most interesting characters on the show because she goes beyond the usual Lady Macbeth imagery of whispering in the ear of the powerful man; she has this strength all by herself when he doesn’t listen to her. You can see a glimpse of pearls and this traditional First Lady look is as much her uniform as the white and neutral tones are Olivia’s.

Abby Scandal S3No umbrella for Abby either and this is a pretty sexy shot. It’s been teased that we will be finding out more about Abby’s past and while we know that she was in an abusive marriage, beyond that it’s pretty much a blank slate. Hopefully the same applies to Harrison as his support for Olivia is unwavering; there needs to be a bigger reason as to why he is willing to do anything for Olivia beyond the help she gave with his past legal woes.

David Scandal S3David’s going to be in an interesting position when we return as he has been both the betrayed and the betrayer; this has secured him a huge career bump as the new U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia. Is this going to leave him out in the cold? He has worked with and against Olivia and complications arose thanks to his relationship with Abby; is there hope for this pair? While I enjoyed David as one of the Gladiators, it will be good to see him return as antagonist and sometime friend.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

13 Sep

New York Fashion Week came to a close yesterday (the madness continues today with London Fashion Week kicking off) and so this edition of “Out of the Box” is a front row special.

Ashley

Ashley Madekwe might be exiting Revenge in the season 3 premiere, but she has been doing the fashion show rounds. Madekwe has been running her own style blog for the past 5 years and so her presence at multiple shows doesn’t feel forced or contrived. Out of all the many stunning outfits that Madekwe wore this week, this super pretty bronze/gold beaded dress at Saturday’s Monique Lhuillier show is my favorite. Avoiding the pitfalls of ruining a good dress with too many accessories, Madekwe has also gone for a fresh faced look and it’s stunning.

Allison Williams and Zosia Mamet

Girls co-stars Allison Williams and Zosia Mamet have very different styles and at the Prabal Gurung you can see this in action – Williams is all about the classic and Mamet tends to opt for a variety of looks that sometimes fail to hit the mark. Not so at the Prabal Gurung show where she looks relaxed and stylish. Both are in monochrome – they’re somewhat power clashing but it works and the pop of color on Mamet’s floral top is eye catching. Mamet also looks like she wants to be there, a change from her standard red carpet pose that tends to suggest otherwise.

Kerry Washington Project Runway NYFW

Kerry Washington took a break from filming season 3 of Scandal to perform judging duties at the Project Runway finale fashion show. This is Washington’s third time judging on the show (first for the final) and she looks delightful in this floral Stella McCartney frock. Washington recently wore another fun and flirty Stella McCartney dress at the recent Teen Choice Awards.

Michelle Dockery NYFWMichelle Dockery’s cerulean blue* flared mid-length skirt and beautiful Peter Pan-collar blouse is both stunning and demure at the Carolina Herrera show on Monday and she looks every bit the English Rose. The dahlia bloom print on the shirt is an interesting twist on the many floral interpretations that we have seen this week on both the runway and front row.

*Hard not to think about The X-Files episode “Pusher” when this color is mentioned

Taylor Momsen and Kelly Rutherford

Who knew I was missing Gossip Girl this much that I would not only Fantasy Costume Blair Waldorf but also get excited to see some of the cast reuniting?! It’s as big a surprise to me as anyone, but it was good to see Kelly Rutherford and Taylor Momsen posing together backstage at the Alice + Olivia show. Momsen’s hemline and makeup are not as extreme as we are used to and Rutherford also opted for an above the knee black dress. While Momsen looks as surly as Jenny Humphrey in this shot apparently she was all smiles at the show.

Rashida Jones Opening Ceremony

Rashida Jones rocks a quilted sleeveless floral embroidered top at the Opening Ceremony show and pairs it with a skirt that I wish was currently in my own wardrobe. This is a double pattern success and bonus points are given for a great shade of lipstick. Also is crushed velvet making a comeback? This really must be a 90s revival of the highest order (see the woman in the background).

Oscar de la Renta’s Spring 2014 Collection: Polka Dots for New Girl’s Jess

12 Sep

It was a pattern and color explosion at the Oscar de la Renta’s NYFW Spring 2014 runway show and there are two dresses that have Jess Day from New Girl written all over them. Both are super girly and Jess does like to rock a lot of polka dots. The contrasting embroidered floral detail makes this dress stand out and elevates it from being just another ’50s style polka dot affair. So, so pretty.

And for a white version with floral shoes:

Joking Bad: Jimmy Fallon’s Breaking Bad Parody

12 Sep

Late night TV has had a good week with the reveal that Jimmy Kimmel was behind the Worst Twerk Fail video, but we have a new rival for best moment as Late Night with Jimmy Fallon unveils their Breaking Bad parody “Joking Bad.” As with the previous parodies like “6-bee” (a take on Glee featuring the Parks and Recreation cast) and “Downton Sixbey” it is essentially a love letter to a show that is dominating the conversation.

Jimmy Fallon is pretty spot on with his Walter White’s mannerisms, particularly the hunched posture when he is on the phone. There are also nods to the meth making montages, the roof pizza and how they like to stick the camera on random objects. Cameos from Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul and Bob Odenkirk, and a twist at the end make this a very fun piece from the Late Night crew.
