HBO’s Best of 2014/What’s to Come in 2015 Video Includes New Game of Thrones Shots

23 Dec

HBO has said goodbye to two longstanding staples, welcomed back one from long ago, delivered top notch episodes from both new and old shows and they’re set to do it all again in 2015. This video celebrates the best of 2014 while also revealing what is coming in the new year.

These moments are brief and if you want to go straight to the “Coming in 2015” portion skip to 1.37 where you will see a variety of pensive looking Game of Thrones characters including Cersei and Tyrion. Also on the returning shows ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ new footage list are VeepLooking and GirlsTrue Detective gets a title card and The Leftovers is a shot of Justin Theroux in aviators, which is the best placeholder for a show with no new material as of yet. Queen Latifah is going down the biopic route playing iconic blues singer Bessie Smith in Bessie, Dwayne Johnson will star in the half-hour dramedy Ballers and the Duplass brothers are bringing Togetherness.

It has been a very good year for HBO with Boardwalk Empire going out on a creative high, True Detective delivering two of the performances of the year, producing one of my favorite episodes of the 2014 with Looking’s “Looking for the Future,” outrage and laughter in equal measure with a side order of shirt approval while watching Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, bringing back Valerie Cherish and introducing Carrie Coon to the non-theatre world.

Here is a look at all of that and more:

Sarah Silverman and Michael Sheen Join the Guilty Remnant

1 Nov

This isn’t Leftovers casting news for season 2 of and yet Sarah Silverman and Michael Sheen make pretty convincing members of the Guilty Remnant for Halloween. Okay it’s not the hardest costume to make – white clothes, Sharpie, paper, cigarettes and a whole lot of soul sucking platitudes- but I think Patti would be impressed with their getup and disdainful looks. The glasses and disheveled hair really ties the whole thing together and so far this is my favorite celeb Halloween attire so far (Taylor’s Pegacorn is a close second).

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

3 Oct

Time to check in on the style highlights of the week and it’s all about the movie premieres including Gone Girl, Paris Fashion Week and various other events.

Carrie CoonOne of the breakout stars of this year has been The Leftovers’ Carrie Coon who came out of nowhere (well, not exactly nowhere as she’s Tony nominated) to devastate us on a weekly basis as Nora Durst. Now she’s starring in Gone Girl as Ben Affleck’s twin sister in a role that grounds the protagonist of this story – and she’s really pretty amazing in it – adding both sympathy to Nick and humor to proceedings. At the New York Film Festival screening Coon looks striking in a beautiful floral strapless gown. Bonus points for the green not too matchy-matchy clutch and strong pink lips color.

Leighton MeesterLeighton Meester gives a monochromatic twist in Balmain at the premiere for The Judge. There’s something very retro-futuristic about this long sleeved/short hemline dress that makes me think of a 1960s sci-fi or even spy show. Just so long as no one mistakes the skirt detail for spare napkins.

Allison WilliamsAllison Williams has a very different take on black and white with a sporty contrast collar and waist in super chic Vionnet at the 2014 Global Citizen Festival. It’s a slight departure for the Girls star and while it’s still ultra feminine and kinda preppy, it’s not so overtly girly.

Natalie Dormer Dior Paris Fashion weekSpeaking of chic, here is Natalie Dormer attending the Dior runway show at Paris Fashion week looking laid back and stylish all at one. This is a fantastic coat.

Kiernan ShipkaAdding some bright color to this week’s pretty muted “Out of the Box” is Kiernan Shipka in Valentino at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Hollywood Costume opening party. This is a fun, cute outfit on the Mad Men star as she continues to kill it on the red carpet, while still looking her age. A dress like this might not work on an actress over 20, but that’s definitely not a problem here. Instead of opting for strappy gold sandals or blah nude heels, Shipka’s continued the bright theme with amazing orange Valentino ‘Rockstud’ pumps.

Danai GuriraOne more “Out of the Box” injection of bold color and this one is courtesy of Danai Gurira at The Walking Dead season 5 premiere (the show returns Sunday, October 12) wearing a pink geometric Christian Siriano number. Added skirt flaps have been a big trend this week and I’m enjoying this silhouette shake up.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

11 Jul

Reactions to Emmy nominations, magazine editorials and cover stories are all part of this week’s edition of “Out of the Box” as the summer months continue to bring an eclectic mix to this column.

OITNBFor all the Emmy omissions that gave me rage face (The Americans, Tatiana Maslany, The Good Wife in the drama series category), I couldn’t stay mad for long thanks to the Orange is the New Black recognition with 12 nominations (and 5 of those across acting categories). The OITNB Twitter account posted this fun picture of the cast celebrating and while it is somewhat jarring to see actors in their working environment in regular attire, it is also a pleasure to see them like this.

Mindy KalingSadly not an Emmy nominee, instead Mindy Kaling looked incredible at 5.30 in the morning as one of the Emmy nomination announcers. Despite the early call time, Kaling doesn’t shy away from bold color and this red Escada dress is extra striking when paired with aqua blue pumps. I don’t think I’ve ever looked this good at this time in the morning.

Liv Tyler Violet GreyEmpire Records is the movie I watched on repeat in the summer of 1999 and I’m surprised this VHS didn’t end up an unplayable mess. Like a toddler with their favorite animated movie I couldn’t get enough and from that moment Liv Tyler earned super cool status points even if she fancied Rex Manning and couldn’t see the super hot cardigan wearing A.J. right in front of her. Anyway, I digress and what I’m trying to say is I’m so happy to see Liv Tyler on The Leftovers even if she is giving me all the hair envy. Tyler is also featured in the July issue of The Violet Files  on the beauty website Violet Grey and she is interviewed by fellow actress Eva Mendes. The outdoor shoot is really fun and has a somewhat 90s quality to it. I blame the blanket.

Lizzy CaplanLizzy Caplan looks very cool (even if she has the air of someone waiting to get picked up to go for lunch somewhere fancy) in a Victoria Beckham dress in the July issue of Vogue and this gives me the opportunity to a) cheer Caplan’s Emmy nomination and b) give another signal boost that Masters of Sex is back on Sunday.

Chris PrattChris Pratt’s Entertainment Weekly front cover is adorable and slightly silly, which is just the way I like to think of Pratt. This year has been pretty epic for Pratt what with The Lego MovieGuardians of the Galaxy and Jurassic World, which he is currently shooting. Not to mention Parks and Recreation and even though I know there’s a (CGI) raccoon in Guardians in my mind this is one of the many Pawnee raccoons that torment the residents of this town.
