Karen Gillan’s Winning Look at the 2015 Jameson Empire Awards

30 Mar

Still mourning the loss of Selfie and everything it was/could’ve been but taking a break from Sia karaoke sadness with Karen Gillan in a fabulous shimmery Louis Vuitton dress at the 2015 Jameson Empire Awards. Gillan took home the prize for Best Female Newcomer for her performances in Oculus and Guardians of the Galaxy.

Karen GillanFuturistic mod springs to mind and there’s a whole Jetsons 60s vibe going on. Now the dress is a big style hit and Karen Gillan’s red carpet record is excellent as she doesn’t always stick to what is safe.

Karen Gillan bootsSo what to make of the black boots? They add an edginess to the look and also falls into the whole mod element (picturing Sally Draper in her white go go boots), but an ankle bootie is what I’m leaning towards as an alternate. When Michelle Williams wore a very similar looking Louis Vuitton frock to the Met Gala it was criticized for being a bit too casual for the event; she paired it with black pumps and they looked fine but were nothing special. Like Williams, Gillan’s pixie cut was stunning and the wavy short bob is also doing wonders. Can someone find her a comedy that doesn’t get cut short before its time?

With the lights like this it looks like karaoke should be on the menu really:

Karen Gillan EmpireBonus Empire Awards red carpet yes with Hayley Atwell in a classic black dress and another TV plea to renew Agent Carter.

Hayley AtwellMuch appreciated and thanks in advance.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

6 Mar

Now award season is over (until the summer when the TV awards kick in) we’ve got a mixture of magazine covers, fashion campaigns and movie premieres for this week’s style highs. Michelle WilliamsMy Michelle Williams style crush goes way back and the April UK Elle cover is a fashion delight. Sometimes actress fashion house pairings don’t quite mesh from print ads to the red carpet (*cough Jennifer Lawrence/Christian Dior cough*), but Michelle Williams and Louis Vuitton has worked on every level. This is twee without being too cutesy using leather and lace; the orange is spectacular and it is just a fun cover. With Williams, editorials often lean on fragility with a hint sadness, sometimes a wisp of whimsy and I am glad this moves beyond that.

Gummer sisters and other storiesMamie and Grace Gummer join their model sister Louisa in the new & Other Stories campaign and this Co-Lab collection by Clare Vivier is a mixture of French chic with Cali cool. The range of bags, cropped denim and silk shirts on display here is making me clamor for spring and I’m already adding items to my wish list such as this leather shoulder bag Gillian Jacobs showed off on Instagram and the red one Louisa carries in the shot above.

Mamie GummerOne more shot from the new & Other Stories campaign and while I am not entirely sold on the quasi-fanny pack leather belted bag, Mamie Gummer’s slight 70s flare and shirt styling is giving me all the Jamie Lee Curtis in the first Halloween feels. The jeans aren’t as high in the waist and the shirt is a slightly different color, but it still has the same effortless quality.

Lily James and Richard Madden CinderellaLily James goes full Disney princess in Elie Saab at the premiere of Cinderella, which is surely the ideal time to embrace ethereal pretty. Ol’ King of the North (or that should read former *sob*) Richard Madden is playing his part well and if only he had been allowed to be a beardy Prince Charming.

Karen GillanRemember when Henry lent Eliza his coat on Selfie and she fashioned it into a super sexy funky outfit? Karen Gillan’s Burberry trench look is giving me a whole bunch of Selfie feels at the LA Cinderella premiere. I am still in mourning for this charming, funny and cancelled too soon delight; this outfit only adds to the Eliza and Henry sadness while looking cool at the same time. Now might be the ideal moment to pour one out to Selfie while singing along to the most heartbreaking version of “Chandelier.”

Best of the 2014 Met Gala – Part One

6 May

The Met Gala is a lavish affair and the decadent red carpet showcases some of the more theatrical gowns; unlike something like the Oscars this event expects daring attire that might look out of place elsewhere. Last year’s punk theme was one many struggled with, in that they looked amazing but there was nothing particularly punk on display. Couturier Charles James is celebrated this year; both at the Met Gala and at the Met’s new Costume Institute exhibition as his designs revolutionized the world of fashion. Charles James was a perfectionist and he created incredibly structured and exquisite gowns. This is how fashion designers paid homage to this work and influence.

This is part one (for part two head here) and it is a picture heavy post. Enjoy!

Lena DunhamLast year Lena Dunham looked amazing and she’s done it once again; the Met Gala is where Dunham gets it right. Mullet dresses tend to make me shudder and yet this Giambattista Valli Spring 2014 Couture is rather beautiful. The floral embroidery is exquisite and while I would have maybe added a necklace, it is dramatic enough as it is.

Janelle MonaeI can’t resist a cape even if it could double as a tapestry and Janelle Monae’s Tadashi ensemble is the kind of theatricality this event demands. Monae shows how pants can be just as eye-catching as any fancy gown and this is one of the most memorable looks of the night.

Lake BellThe next two pieces are from Tommy Hilfiger and use his signature colors of red, white and blue. Hilfiger is all about the classic approach and Lake Bell’s red gown is beautiful in its simplicity. One way to add impact is with a statement necklace and bold lip color/minimal makeup enhances Bell’s look.

Zooey DeschanelZooey Deschanel wore Tommy Hilfiger last year and it’s no surprise to see her wearing a gown made by her recent collaborator. Details I adore include the feathered shoulders, and the stunning Chanel Ruban Mademoiselle necklace. The white belt and train add the necessary drama, however her hair is giving me images of 80s volume which on this occasion is not a good thing.

Taylor SwiftTaylor Swift was one of the only attendees who managed the punk theme and she’s once again on point in this Oscar de la Renta gown (minus the cat) in a gown that takes the structured element of Charles James’ work and runs with it. The punk theme saw a style departure for Swift, whereas this is very much in her style comfort range and she looks stunning once again.

Olivia MunnNow here’s one of my favorite approaches to hair styling at the Met Gala as Olivia Munn’s gold hairpiece and loose curls complement this stunning Diane von Furstenberg yellow gown. It’s maybe a bit too cleavy for this event, however the color is stunning and the long sleeves have a way of balancing out the plunging neckline. Munn isn’t overly done up either with just an orange pop on her lips.

Emmy RossumMore color and this time a floral explosion from Emmy Rossum in Carolina Herrera. It’s a structured ball gown and one of the more overt Charles James tributes.

Jessica PareAnother play on the floral look as Jessica Paré opts for Michael Kors and monochrome. This might be a case of needing a necklace and yet I think the lack of one adds to the elegance of the look, especially as Paré’s sleek updo, bright pink lip color and super sparkly earrings add the required impact.

Michelle WilliamsMichelle Williams keeps it simple and chic in shimmery Louis Vuitton. I adore this dress and I’m glad to see a variety of frock lengths, however this dress doesn’t scream Met Gala. Still super cute though.

Leighton MeesterLeighton Meester is going all 70s boho in gold Emilio Pucci. Pulling off both the plunging neckline and high leg slit, Meester looks amazing.

Maggie Gyllenhaal capeMaggie Gyllenhaal’s Valentino dress and matching cape is going to be pretty divisive and it might be cape bias, but I think this is terrific and hey it’s the Met Gala so these more costumey pieces are more than welcome. This also has a whole 70s thing going on with the color palette and dramatic dots (which you know, I’m also partial to). The super blonde pixie cut is also doing it for me.

Brie LarsonBrie Larson’s robot-esque space pajamas from Prada is another ensemble that might raise the wrong kind of eyebrows, but it’s getting only good eyebrows and hand claps from here. Setting it off is the hair twist as Larson goes all in.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

11 Apr

It’s that time of month for the newsstands to get an influx of new magazines and this edition of Out of the Box is looking at striking images from New York magazine, Vanity Fair, the annual Beautiful People issue of Paper and the The Normal Heart cast covering The Hollywood Reporter.

Cabaret[Source]

Michelle Williams and Alan Cumming are appearing on stage together in Cabaret and New York magazine is celebrating this collaboration with an amazing photo of the pair in this week’s issue. It’s a departure from how we are used to seeing Cumming as relatively buttoned up Eli Gold on The Good Wife – though Cumming has won a Tony for his previous Cabaret turn – and it’s Williams’ Broadway debut. It’s a super cool photo and there’s extra excitement for me personally as I have tickets for Cabaret this summer, if you’re a regular reader you will know how much I adore the work and styling of Michelle Williams.

Jessica Williams[Source]

The Beautiful People issue of Paper has many TV Ate My Wardrobe favorites so it was hard to pick out just one, in the end Jessica Williams is our choice because she’s rocking the Tanya Taylor stripes and for her always awesome appearances on The Daily Show. Williams also appeared on the most recent season of Girls and along with coveting all her outfits; it was good to see her flexing her acting chops on a show like this.

Kiernan Shipka VF[Source]

Mad Men returns this weekend for part one of the final season and Kiernan Shipka continues to kill it on both the red carpet and in fashion editorials. This Tommy Hilfiger ensemble is classic all American with a color block twist and I adore the hair flick that nods to the decade prior to the one Sally Draper currently lives in. I want all the good things for Shipka and that she can navigate the tricky path which is growing up on camera. So far she is doing a stellar job and I’m also glad to see editorials like this Vanity Fair one choosing age appropriate clothes for her to wear.

THR the normal heart[Source]

The Normal Heart is on the highly anticipated list and this week Jim Parsons, Taylor Kitsch, Matt Bomer and Mark Ruffalo cover The Hollywood Reporter and look unsurprisingly dapper. If you haven’t seen the trailer you can watch it here and be warned the room you are in might suddenly get dusty.

Bonus Taylor Kitsch from the issue and he is wearing the hell out of those Salvatore Ferragamo pants and Dior shirt. For more photos head here.

Oscar Red Carpet Rewind – Michelle Williams

2 Mar

This amazing infograph of the dresses worn by best actress winners since 1929 is a thing of wonder – it sadly doesn’t include my all time favorite Oscars dress which is this mustard Vera Wang gown worn by Michelle Williams at the 2006 awards. It’s vintage-inspired with pleated and tucked details; eight years later and it’s still stunning. Williams was nominated in the supporting category for Brokeback Mountain and even though she didn’t take home the prize (Rachel Weisz won for The Constant Gardner) this winning look is topped off with a slightly mussed updo and bold red lips.

Thanksgiving Rewind: Dawson’s Creek “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?”

28 Nov

Sitcoms tend to be where the most memorable Thanksgiving episodes can be found, but I wanted to carry on with the holiday themed teen TV discussions that started with Halloween this year. So far My So-Called LifeBuffy the Vampire Slayer and Freaks and Geeks have been addressed and so it’s time to talk about that other ’90s teen TV juggernaut Dawson’s Creek. The episode “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?” is from season 3 and deals with Jen’s estranged relationship with her mother and other family related dramas that tend to rear their head during the holiday season.

photo (3)

Pacey talks of defining moments when Jen finds out that her mother is a giant hypocrite who, instead of trying to deal with her daughter’s promiscuity sent her away. This is further compounded by the revelation that Jen’s mom had given up a child when she was a teenager (who happens to be one of the Sweet Valley High twins). Jen’s mother is pretty much your typical WASP archetype as she will do anything to avoid a scandal going public. The pearl necklace that she tries to bestow to Jen is pure waspy style and Jen rejects this. It’s a peace offering and it’s one that is too little, too late as the woman that Jen idolized when she grew up threw her away; “Pearls lose their luster if you don’t wear them. I guess that they’re like people in that regard, you should keep them close to your skin.”

Halloween episodes give characters the opportunity to be someone else and Thanksgiving is all about family. It’s the perfect time for the Lindley’s to have a frank discussion and for Michelle Williams to break my heart. As I’ve mentioned previously Jen was my favorite character on this show, not because she was the ‘bad girl’ (the antics on a show like Gossip Girl are way worse, though Jen does share *some* similarities with Serena) instead there was something compelling about her as she struggles with this label and this new environment. Plus I really wanted her haircut, though looking at this semi-crimped style I’m not sure why.

photo (7)Friends as family is also a consistent notion when it comes to Thanksgiving episodes and while this sentiment sounds cheesy Dawson perfectly sums it up when he tells Joey that “The only homes we have are the ones we make for ourselves.” I can totally see that statement on a fridge magnet or doormat. Jen isn’t the only one having a hard time as Joey is still mourning her mother and the holiday only magnifies this pain, Dawson is dealing with his parents divorce, Pacey and Andi are still in post breakup awkwardness and Pacey doesn’t want to spend Thanksgiving with his own bawdy family.

photo (6)The defining moment that Pacey mentions refers to seeing your parents “as human beings with their own problems” and how “it is oddly kind of liberating when you realize they are way more messed up than you are.” Alanis Morissette’s “That I Would Be Good” kicks in because this is the late ’90s and lady angst music is the best soundtrack choice. This also happens to be one of the episodes where Jen and Pacey attempt friends with benefits and while I never saw them as a long term couple they have great chemistry together and this storyline is a lot of fun before the Dawson/Pacey/Joey triangle angst sets in.

photo (9)Jen realizes that her mother doesn’t hate her and the reason she was exiled was due to her mother’s self-loathing and fear of disappearing off the social scene if she ever ends it with her father. It’s the closure that Jen needs and hey Thanksgiving made it all possible. The final scene with the group hanging out around the fire is all about the ‘friends as family’ idea and it’s sprinkled with Dawson’s Creek staples such as pop culture references (Charlie Brown), a sentimental speech from Dawson that leads to a mention of the Oscars.

It’s a solid Thanksgiving episode, though I’m glad I had watched “Escape from Witch Island” recently as this is the one that precedes it and I have also watched/written about this ghostly adventure recently. Ok, that was pretty much a discussion of how bad Joey’s hat is and in terms of costuming in this episode the only thing of note is how ill fitting the bras are and along with the everything is baggy look, I’m glad this trend hasn’t come back around with the recent ’90s revival. Jen’s super long black skirt, knee high boots combo is staple late ’90s look. The location is stunning and having a meal like this outside without freezing this time of year would be wonderful.

Happy Thanksgiving to all who are celebrating today!

Michelle Williams Talks Dawson’s Creek Nostalgia

8 Oct

Michelle Williams sported a quiffed look at The New Yorker “In Conversation” event at the weekend as she discussed her TV and film career with writer David Denby. Despite a clip snafu that saw the wrong Blue Valentine scene shown to the audience – the hotel shower scene was instead of another fractious moment between Williams and Ryan Gosling’s characters – there are other things to talk about from this discussion including Williams’ recent trip to Wilmington, North Carolina where they shot Dawson’s Creek.

Michelle Williams New Yorker 2013

Williams explained that she “hadn’t been back since the show ended but I went back and took my daughter on vacation and saw people I hadn’t seen in 10 years and went all the places that we used to go. And it was great. It was actually a real stroke of luck to be transported there.” It’s all ’90s nostalgia at the moment and while I think a reunion episode wouldn’t really work (Spoiler Alert! Jen is dead) I am tempted to revisit this show, plus I still really need to watch the final episode (I know).

Wearing a Louis Vuitton shirt-dress that manages to incorporate both a black and white checkered pattern and a bow around the middle without veering into too cutesy/twee and not over powering the look with accessorizes, Williams looks fantastic and relaxed. While there isn’t a ton of things you can do to make short hair look different the quiff is a tried and tested favorite here at TV Ate My Wardrobe as it not only gets occasionally pesky bangs out of your face but also gives you a fresh new look. The pink lip color and nail polish adds a pop of color without overwhelming.

As photo shoots and magazine editorials with Michelle Williams tend to lean towards the melancholy these photos are a welcome change.

Next up for Williams is a turn on Broadway in Cabaret and she will be playing the iconic role of Sally Bowles alongside The Good Wife’s Alan Cumming, opening April next year. She also recently completed work on Suite Francaise based on Irene Nemirovsky’s work that tells the story of a woman living in German occupied France.

Teen Hair Confessions & the New Michelle Williams Louis Vuitton Campaign

25 Jul

TV Ate My Wardrobe likes to explore how costuming and styling from TV shows can be a source of inspiration and here’s the tale of how one character had a big influence on a huge hair decision I made; when Jen Lindley from Dawson’s Creek got a drastic shorter style so did I. That’s right I went from long to short hair at the age of 16 because of a TV show. Luckily it turns out that I’m one of those people that looks better with short hair and it wasn’t the disaster it could be (the story of my earlier super shot blunt bangs is a horrorshow, thanks to teenage stupidity rather than Jen Lindley).

This anecdote leads me to Michelle Williams’ new stunning Louis Vuitton campaign that will feature in the many September issues of fashion magazines next month and while Williams has perfected the short ‘do since her time on The WB, the strong eyebrow/brick red lip combination has a distinct ’90s influence.

Michelle Williams Louis Vuitton AW 13The ’90s revival is in full swing as the nostalgia dial is set to high as everything that happened in this decade becomes new again; this includes TV show reboots, movies that are celebrating their 18th anniversary (hello Clueless) and makeup revivals from brands like MAC, even the political sex scandals sound like something from the 90s with a technological twist. This is enough to instantly make anyone in their late 20s/early 30s feel the weight of time and thanks to the recent My So-Called Life and Freaks and Geeks discussions that I have been taking part in for This Was TV with Julie Hammerle I’m pretty sure I’ve past the threshold of embarrassing teen stories (soon there will be embarrassing university stories when we tackle Felicity in the fall – another show that has a defining hair moment).

For all the fashion mistakes we make as teens (and as adults) it’s a learning process that we all go through, the short hair that Williams had as Jen Lindley is nowhere near as polished as the pixie cut that Williams is famous for now (hey stars they’re just like us) and this new campaign shows Michelle Williams rocking updated 90s grunge makeup (albeit while holding the very non-grunge but beautiful new Louis Vuitton bag).

This campaign is not only stunning but it also reminds me that thanks to Jen Lindley back in 1999 I made the best hair decision and went short.

What do you think of the new campaign?

The Dress

24 Apr

Here is something I wrote a while back and it was for a writing competition that was called “The ____ That Changed My Life” with the focus on something important in your wardrobe. I didn’t win, but I still like the piece I wrote and it’s got a pop culture theme so here is is:

A photograph from my first trip to New York City perfectly showcases the dress that means the most to me; the item of clothing in question is a simple French Connection floral jersey dress and the photo is a typically touristy one (hey, it was my first time). I’m standing on a shut-down Madison Avenue with the buildings looming above and the dress has a subtle pop of color that separates it from the mostly neutral tones of the people in the background and I somehow standout in this grand city, just for a moment.*

photo

There are dresses for a multitude of big moments in our lives; prom, weddings, a first date, an interview, so why would I pick this one that you wouldn’t necessarily notice amongst all the other ones that hang in my closet? For one thing it holds the power that only a favorite item of clothing can possess; to make you feel confident.

Growing up you would be more likely to find me in jeans, with a dress possibly making an appearance but only as worn over the jeans (it was the late 90s after all). As I got older and high school parties turned into university ones and the odd fancypants soiree was thrown, my collection of formal wear grew, but I still didn’t really have any dresses for everyday affairs. A few were added to my collection after I graduated that could be dressed up or down and my favorite was one I referred to as the Brokeback dress; not because it looked cowboy-esque but as it was a less frumpy version of Michelle Williams’ costuming in this movie . It wasn’t until later when I purchased ‘the dress’ that my collection really began to grow and I finally mastered the non-formal dress.

This is around the time that Mad Men first aired and it soon became apparent that it would influence what we would see on the catwalk and in stores. As someone who writes about TV now, and was in the process of getting a Masters in Film and TV at that time, this show had (and still has) a huge impact on my wardrobe. Prior to Mad Men there was Sex and the City which spawned just as much attention from the fashion world but there is something about the updated 60s style that appealed to my sensibilities. I could never pull off Carrie’s wonderfully daring approach but the influx of dresses taking their cues from Betty Draper was an instant win.

So pop culture is one place where I take my style cues from and New York City is one of the most filmed/sung about/photographed cities, so of course I wanted to look my best when I first visited and this dress makes me feel both super comfortable and stylish. It hugs all the right places and flatters the rest, it allows me to reveal my legs without being too self conscious and it works perfectly in both the summer and winter (just add tights and boots). Clothes can serve a multitude of functions and the most uncomfortable item can look stunning and you just have to hide the pain. I prefer the least amount of discomfort route; which is why at any event that requires me to wear a heel you will find me with my shoes in hand after a few hours (classy I know).

I now have other dresses in the same style from French Connection in an array of patterns and colors and now on days off from being stuck behind my computer you will likely find me in one of my growing collection. Instead of looking to Betty Draper, now it is Don’s new wife Megan that clothing stores seem to be emulating, there will probably be a hint of this evolution with my own dress choices.

Back to the dress in question and another reason why it continues to inspired me. The photo of me on Madison Avenue (home to Don Draper) holds a special place for me. There is something about me standing in that dress on such an iconic road, in such an iconic city that epitomizes how confident this dress makes me. It seems like there are endless possibilities and this dress makes me feel like Superman.

* The quality of the photo isn’t the best as it was taken with a disposable camera (yes I still use disposable cameras, I like the surprise element) and I can’t locate the disc that has these photos on them, so it is a photograph of a photograph. The colors are duller than they are in the original copy and for some reason it makes it look like I’ve used a filter to give a 70s vibe. I still like the picture even if I look a little dorky.
