Best of the 2014 Tony Awards Red Carpet

9 Jun

The Tony Awards were held last night and as I just saw my first musical this weekend (no really) this award show couldn’t come at a better time (I saw Cabaret and it was amazing, even if it didn’t win anything). As I’ve just got back from vacation this is a lot less in-depth than usual, but there is still plenty to discuss as the red carpet is awash with amazing gowns (and tuxedos).

photo1 (2)Leighton Meester looks stunning in ivory Antonio Berardi and this almost makes up for the lack of Seth Cohen/Blair Waldorf wedding photos as she is accompanied by husband Adam Brody.

photo6Now for something vibrant from Sutton Foster in a fuschia Reem Acra.

photo7Audra McDonald won last night (and it’s a record sixth win) for her performance in Lady Day and she also had an impact on the red carpet in a sea of black and white gowns. This look is maybe missing a necklace, but I really love the relaxed strapless Escada frock.

photo8Speaking of black and white dresses with Lucy Liu looking fabulous in Vivienne Westwood.

photo2Feathers can be hard to pull off and it helps that Maggie Gyllenhaal has the whole boho look down (no pun intended) and this Dolce & Gabbana is perfect for her.

Judith LightI adore Judith Light and the long sleeve Randi Rahm gown she wore looks fabulous on her.

photo5Another fantastic black dress with Vera Farmiga in Stella McCartney. This time matching her hair waves to her dress ones.

photo10This is a fun/sexy take on pattern with Anika Noni Rose wearing a leopard print Badgley Mischka.

photo9This is from backstage and Tina Fey is killing it in a midnight blue with gold print Oscar de la Renta gown.

photo4The perfect way to end this post is with Matt Bomer looking pretty damn perfect. Swoon.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

6 Jun

Red carpet events, polo, new summer shows and magazine editorials all make up this edition of “Out of the Box.”

Aaron PaulLast weekend a whole host of stars attended the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic and this means it’s time for sunglasses and super cute dresses. Olivia Munn is radiant in white lace Lover (not pictured, but Munn also had the most amazing Devi Kroell wooden clutch), as is Busy Philipps. Both Lupita Nyong’o and Dakota Johnson work brimmed hats with black/white patterned frocks and Julianne Moore does the almost impossible and makes a jumpsuit appealing (by Rosie Assoulin, who also designed this Keri Russell dress). Only model Behati Prinsloo underwhelms in beige. Aaron Paul holds court in the center looking very dapper in a summer suit.

Lucy LiuSwitching things up with Lucy Liu in this gorgeous strapless Carolina Herrera gown at the 2014 Huading Film Awards. The gold geometric print is eye-catching starting small and intricate on the bodice, getting larger further down the skirt. It is a silhouette that works incredibly well on Liu and it is a dramatic change from the looser fitting shift dresses she tends to wears on Elementary.

Halt and Catch FireHalt and Catch Fire premiered this week and I’m starting to think Girls/OITNB costume designer Jenn Rogien was right when she said at the recent Vulture festival that you end up dressing the year you were born, as recently I’ve been drawn to early ’80s style from The Americans and now Halt and Catch Fire which is set in 1983.

Mackenzie Davis plays Cameron and her red sweater is making a mark on my already extensive TV knitwear list and short hair looks amazing on Davis. She’s got an Agyness Deyn thing going on. Scoot McNairy is working the sadness beard like no other and Lee Pace is doing well with the mysterious/handsome all about his eyebrows look. Let’s hope this show can build on what I thought was a promising, but not quite fulfilled pilot (so like most pilots really).

Brie Larson and Shailene WoodleyThis shot of Brie Larson and Shailene Woodley comes from their New York magazine cover story this week and this shoot is giving off all the Simon & Garfunkel “Bookends” vibess (and this automatically makes me think of Almost Famous). Getting prepared to heave cry when The Fault in Our Stars comes out. Will be drinking plenty of water on that day if the book/trailer are anything to go by.

The Wish List: More Joan Watson Dresses on Elementary

15 Apr

Having only recently caught up on Elementary, it’s only fair to dedicate another post to the wonderful wardrobe of Joan Watson and two of the delightful dresses she wore in the most recent episode “No Lack of Void.”

Joan Marni dressWith a slight hint of whimsy, this is another floral Joan Watson dress and while the one featuring on last week’s Elementary wish list was manipulated to look like an x-ray there is something more doodle like about this Marni silk print dress.

MarniMixing up the slightly oversized look and continuing to embrace pattern is the second outfit choice from “No Lack of Void” with a Christian Pellizzari tree print dress.

Joan WatsonPockets! Yep this was already a funky frock and the “anything with pockets is instantly more desirable” rule can be applied. The contrasting patterns and tee like top half with the box pleat skirt design makes this look like two separates when it’s really just one. It’s a fun dress choice and Joan’s signature style is made up of pieces that set her apart from how we generally code the clothes detectives tend to wear and from Sherlock’s distinctive buttoned up look.

A brief fantasy costuming interlude with a dress I could see Joan wearing and one that isn’t going to destroy your bank account.

Topshop Joan dressKeeping the botanical theme with a Trapeze Palm Tree dress from Topshop (available in both UK and US store) and the style and print are very Joan Watson.

The Wish List: Joan Watson’s Dresses on Elementary

7 Apr

Joan Watson joins the TV Ate My Wardrobe amazing coat club as Elementary is both set and shot in New York City, where for a substantial amount of the year good quality outerwear is a must. Having recently caught up on the show which I had previously dipped in and out of (getting season 1 on DVD at Christmas prompted this catch up), I wanted to write something about Joan’s impeccable style.

The coats were my first port of call, but hey it’s spring and there has been far too much winter wear on here over the past few months. Joan also has an incredible selection of boots, but that’s a feature including Alana Bloom and Elizabeth Jennings for the future, plus that fits into the whole brr cold thing. Joan’s around the house clothes rival Jess Day and Mindy Lahiri, but this can also wait for another occasion. Instead, we will be taking a look at some of the recent dresses Joan has worn and where you can get them from.

Elementary 2.18In “The Many Mouths of Aaron Colville” Joan’s penchant for an oversized shift dress is on display. First with this blush pink Club Monaco Iva Blocked frock (currently half off) and Joan’s style moves beyond the usual criminal investigation costuming trappings thanks to her role as consulting detective, rather than actual detective. There’s no need to have her in the usual blouse/pants uniform of female detectives as you tend to see on any of the Law & Order incarnations or even Brooklyn Nine-Nine. The consulting role sets both Sherlock and Joan apart; they can move between worlds as their clothing doesn’t scream police. Joan’s costuming is both feminine and modern without undermining her abilities; it contrasts to the always buttoned up Sherlock.

Elementary 2.19This All Saints dress if from the same episode and the printed image has been manipulated to look like a floral x-ray, which seems perfectly apt for Elementary. It also looks a bit wing like and as with a lot of what happens on this show, sometimes one thing can look a whole lot like something else on the surface. It’s another in the oversized Joan Watson collection; pairing it with tights and ankle booties is the perfect winter to spring transition.

Joan Watson dressSwitching the styling up slightly with a more fitted Alice + Olivia dress that Joan wore a couple of episodes ago (“Ears to You”). It’s red plaid so I’m predisposed to love it, but it’s a plaid dress with a twist as it has leather side panels and a semi-sheer back section. There’s more to this dress than first appearances, how very Elementary of it.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

11 Oct

Public appearances, magazine shoots and red carpet looks dominate “Out of the Box” this week. Remember to check out our Scandal costuming recap for all things Olivia Pope and our Masters of Sex color and costuming post here.

Lizzy Caplan Independent

While I’m on the subject of Masters of Sex here is Lizzy Caplan in what looks like a jumpsuit but is actually two separates (though a long sleeve jumpsuit is available) by Corey Lynn Calter. Having just got used to seeing Caplan in all ’50s wear I’m glad to see this shoot with The Independent doesn’t try to mimic that style and instead goes for a more 1970s look.

Clemence Poesy Stylist

The bag over the head option is probably only useful when it is raining (and really how much does that really do to keep you dry?) but this Clémence Poésy outfit in Stylist magazine is not only super adorable but also affordable. The coat is French Connection and the skirt is from Oasis showing just how winter florals are done and I basically want this whole ensemble – there are chaffinches on the blouse! Clémence Poésy’s next role is in another adaptation of Broen this time the border between France and the United Kingdom; instead of The Bridge it will be called The Tunnel and Poésy is playing Elise, the role Sofia Helin and Diane Kruger have also played. The three actresses all share a similar look and it’s unlikely, but I’d love to see a crossover involving the three different versions of this show.

Angela Bassett AHS

I watched American Horror Story for the first time this week and while I’m still entirely sure what to make of the show I do know that I am excited to have Angela Bassett back on TV again and she looks incredible at the premiere of American Horror Story: Coven. This leather and lace Robert Rodriguez dress is pretty much perfect and completely in tone with the show that Bassett is promoting.

The New Yorker Festival 2013 - Conversation With Music -Michael Shannon Talks With Burkhard Bilger

I’ve got so used to seeing Michael Shannon as the buttoned up (former) Agent Van Alden on Boardwalk Empire and so this combination of polka dot socks and pink t-shirt at The New Yorker “In Conversation” event is so utterly delightful. Rather than his impressive acting career this evening looked at music and Shannon performed with his band Corporal. Sadly there doesn’t appear to be a video of this performance on the New Yorker’s site and I can’t imagine his character on Boardwalk Empire getting up with a guitar anytime soon, unless a super coked up Al Capone wants him to of course.

Celebrities Visit "Late Show With David Letterman" - October 9, 2013

There is something so wonderfully ’80s about this Band of Outsiders dress; it might be the puffed pointy shoulders or the black and white zigzag stripes. Whatever it is, Lucy Liu looks incredible. This outfit is for an appearance on Late Night with David Letterman but in my mind she is really working on a top secret take down mission in 1987. Now all I need is for someone to wear this outfit from Wonder Woman and I’ll be happy.
