Music Monday: Girls and Dancing to New Order’s “Age of Consent”

20 Jan

Apparently today is another Blue Monday, but the New Order song we’re listening to here at TV Ate My Wardrobe is “Age of Consent.” So it’s been a little while since our last Music Monday post and the Girls soundtrack is a good place to revive this feature as it tends to be a blend of old and new songs.

There are a couple of super cringe Marnie moments in “She Said OK” and I fear that I’m going to have “What I Know” stuck in my head all day. In fact it took me the whole episode to pinpoint which version I knew before this one (Emma Bunton) and I’m kinda disappointed that HBO has put up Marnie’s autotuned version even if it made me want to crawl beneath my desk. The rendition of Rent’s “Take Me or Leave Me” later in this episode also had the same curl into a ball reaction. Step away from the microphone Marnie.

Hannah tells Adam that her birthday is always terrible and this New Order song provides one of the few truly happy moments for Hannah this week as Adam picks her up to dance. Sadly we don’t get to hear much of the song as Ray angst (I love you Ray) takes over and the song fades into the background.

Time to dance.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

17 Jan

Monochrome has been back in favor for a while now and so many of the best red carpet looks at various events this week have embraced this trend. This also applies to some on point looks on TV this week and so Out of the Box is focusing on the best in black and white. It’s also been a huge week for TV Ate My Wardrobe favorite Diane von Furstenberg as she celebrates 40 years of her iconic wrap dress with the launch of the Journey of a Dress exhibition as well as getting a name check on American Horror Story: Coven.

Allison Williams DVFAllison Williams went for retro glamour while celebrating Diane von Furstenberg as she ditches the classic all American look she tends to favor on the red carpet. The new season of Girls premiered last weekend and this coupled with the Golden Globes means that the Girls cast have been doing the rounds. This is my style highlight of all the many different outfits Williams has worn and I’m digging the faux bob and red lipstick.

Diane Kruger ChanelDiane Kruger in Chanel is a recipe for success and she pulls off this super cute mini bow accented ensemble like a Chanel wearing pro (she is a face of their skin care range after all). Here’s another version of the ‘Lego’ Chanel clutch and I’m having all the bag envy right now. This is a luncheon event for W magazine and the fresh faced look works perfectly; no one wants to go all out for a daytime shindig.

Keri Russell Fox all starIt’s the TCA winter tour and a whole host of parties and panels have taken place including the Fox All-Star event. Keri Russell switched up this outfit for the Americans panel but kept the leather jacket and monochrome palette. I’ve been watching a lot Felicity recently so it’s been a whole lot of knitwear, Russell can totally pull of the leather badass style and this is a stunning look even if I tend to dislike white pumps. As always her hair looks beyond incredible and The Americans is high on my most anticipated list.

Gillian JacobsGilliam Jacobs attended a Chanel hosted event launching Drew Barrymore’s new book of photography and I’m mesmerized by this hypnotic frock. It reminds me of those 60s art prints and of the dress I wore on New Year’s Eve; I love the different textures and patterns and it makes it hard to look away.

Golden Globes PromoTina Fey and Amy Poehler’s Golden Globes style has already been covered and yet somehow this promo shot slipped under our radar; it’s too damn good to leave out and totally fits in with this week’s “Out of the Box” theme.

American Horror StoryIt’s hard to believe that we haven’t discussed how incredible Frances Conroy is on AHS: Coven and while I still can’t work out if I actually enjoy the show – it’s definitely a hot mess – I’m super into Conroy’s Myrtle as a Grace Coddington/Vivienne Westwood inspired hybrid. The black and white polka dots combined with the leather yellow gloves is perfection and Myrtle has quite the thing for fashion as she refers to the DVF wrap dress as the greatest invention of our time.

Zooey Deschanel Kate SpadeFrom this shot it looks like your average polka dot dress (which you know we would love), instead those dots are actually apples and this is the second week in a row for Kate Spade and New Girl on this list. Paired with a red cardigan and bowed belted this is an excellent daytime take on monochrome. You can buy this Kate Spade New York Domino dress here (and it’s almost half off).

Lena Dunham’s Vogue Cover

15 Jan

There’s a reason why Allison Williams represented Girls on the cover of Elle’s Women in TV issue and that’s because creator and star Lena Dunham has scored the February issue of Vogue. And it’s an excellent shot that looks completely different to everything this magazine has produced recently. Some might say that’s because Dunham doesn’t cut a similar figure to the models, actresses and singers that tend to feature on the cover, but it is better this than some awkward posing in a floral dress.

Lena Dunham Vogue CoverIt’s a fun image with the collar tug and polka dot shirt (yes I’m in love)* and both her hair and makeup look splendid. Dunham’s doing the slightly open mouth thing and it works this time, her previous attempt for Marie Claire was less successful. It’s a really great cover image and I hope Vogue mixes it up like this in the future. Somehow I have a feeling that Kanye thinks Kim is more deserving of a cover, but I say whatever as this is a terrific shot.

Adam Driver and Lena Dunham’s dog Lamby are also featured in this editorial.

Girls Season 3 Premiere Red Carpet

7 Jan

It’s a big week for the cast of Girls as they promote their third season which airs this Sunday and on the same night they will be heading to the Golden Globes as both the show and Lena Dunham have been nominated. There are multiple magazine covers for Allison Williams (including Elle), chat show appearances and the red carpet of their big premiere event. While Jemima Kirke tends to avoid most of the media hoopla she joined castmates Lena Dunham, Allison Williams and Zosia Mamet at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York last night.

Girls Season 3 premiereLet’s break down the looks.

Jemima Kirke’s boho styling has been injected with some old school Hollywood glamour and this satin champagne coloured gown is giving me Courtney Love flashbacks. The tagline for season 3 is “Happily Whatever After” and Lena Dunham’s silver crystal embroidered Rochas Spring 2014 frock is giving off sparkly princess vibes. Dunham’s smoky eyes and slick hairstyle stops it from entering sickly, treacly territory. There is always something slightly awkward about Lena Dunham on the red carpet and while the cut of the dress isn’t perfect, it’s also one of the best outfit choices we’ve seen on her so far.

Moving on from the long to the short dresses and after stepping out of her comfort zone Allison Williams is looking positively Allison Williams in this super cute baby blue Dior; the floral appliqués detail on the bodice is really beautiful touch. As with the Girls poster, there’s a different interpretation of the pretty dress theme and Williams is the most conventional of the group. Shoshanna tends to favor pink, but Zosia Mamet is all about the LBD and who wouldn’t be when it’s Saint Laurent?! While there’s nothing particularly innovative to yell about with this choice, the gold shoes and bracelets are the perfect extras to turn an eh outfit into a winner.

Elle Unveils Their Annual Women in TV Issue

6 Jan

The February issue of Elle magazine is their annual Women in TV special and the 2014 cover stars are all faces from comedy. TV and magazines are both things that I hold in high regard so when the two are combined it’s time to celebrate and the four women on the covers are all TV Ate My Wardrobe favorites. So who are they and what do their individual shots looks like?

Amy Poehler ElleFirst up Amy Poehler and she looks like an extra Angel or ’70s rock star (I’m thinking of either Heart or The Pretenders). Despite my reservations caused by a hairstyle that is reminiscent of the half perm Leslie Knope got last season, it helps that Poehler always looks like she’s having a good time on cover shoots even if some of the styling is questionable. There’s definitely something mischievous about her smile. Less than a week until Amy Poehler co-hosts The Golden Globes and I couldn’t be more excited.

Zooey Deschanel ElleIf Amy Poehler gets to rock a ’70s vibe, then Zooey Deschanel is going for full late ’60s and this dress perfectly suits her She & Him musical persona. This is the TV issue and while this twee getup is in her wheelhouse I would have liked to see something that challenges the perception of who Deschanel is (like this Marie Claire cover). It’s also a tad heavy on the bangs (a statement that sounds ridiculous I know), this I blame on how they’ve cropped the top of her head.

Allison Williams ElleWe’ve got the ’60s and ’70s covered and Girls’ Allison Williams gets the ’80s off the shoulder/long sleeve dress look. For some reason the bottom of this dress resembles a crotch napkin which is not so appealing, however the messy hair/dark eyes works with this outfit choice. Williams tends to wear classic, preppy styles and unlike the Deschanel cover they’ve tried out something different. I could totally see Donna LaDonna from The Carrie Diaries wearing this.

Mindy Kaling ElleMindy Kaling looks stunning in this shot and yet once again I have composition complaints; why is this the only black and white cover? And why is Kaling the only one who doesn’t get a full body shot? I’ve already mentioned how excited I am about this issue; particularly with the women who are covering it and this might be why I’m finding fault with each image choice. These criticisms have nothing to do with the actresses in question and Elle is one of the best fashion magazines when it comes to cover images and content (I am also a subscriber); I’m just disappointed on the whole with these photographs. The inside editorials will hopefully be more inspiring. It hits newsstands January 14.

What do you think of these shots? Am I being too harsh?

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

6 Dec

‘Tis the season for all of those end of year musings and the start of the many award shows between now and the Oscars. “Out of the Box” is taking a look at the red carpet offerings from this week, in what I should imagine will be the first of many award show fashion posts in the coming months. While I might normally moan about the absence of color, as it’s heading towards the holiday season the variety of twists on the LBD is more than acceptable.

Gotham Awards

There is so much to say about this group shot from the Gotham Independent Film Awards and bullet points seem like the best way forward:

  • Michael B. Jordan has been killing it on the red carpet all year and I’m so happy to see him getting so much recognition; he picked up Breakthrough Actor for Fruitvale Station at this awards show.
  • Rashida Jones has filmed her last Parks and Recreation episode which is giving me all the Leslie and Ann related sads, but yay for real life friendship.
  • Also Amy Poehler looks stunning in a leather shouldered Catherine Deane dress. And yes I’m totally digging her real life romance with Nick Kroll who hosted the Gotham Awards. Will ‘The Douche’ make an appearance this season?
  • Oh hey, Jordan Catalano’s hair is super long and I kind of like it. While my teen crush on Jared Leto has all but gone I am looking forward to seeing Dallas Buyers Club and the inevitable reunion with Claire Danes at the Golden Globes. This needs to happen.

Zosia MametAt the same event Girls star Zosia Mamet looks super cute in a Rebecca Minkoff black mini jersey dress. Mamet’s red carpet face tends to give off an air of boredom, not on this occasion where she looks super smiley and comfortable. I’m also very much in love with her chunky buckled black shoes and while I don’t tend to be a heel wearer, I’m definitely coveting this pair.

Clemence Posey

This is how you do winter floral and The Tunnel star Clémence Poésy accompanies designer Erdem to the British Fashion Awards – he picked up the Red Carpet Award – and Poésy shows just why he won, as she’s rocking an Erdem creation. While I haven’t been loving the sheer trend overall (see every Dior gown Jennifer Lawrence wore for the Catching Fire press tour), Erdem has used this technique well and one of my favorite looks at the Met Gala earlier this year was Lena Dunham in Erdem.

Julianna Margulies

It’s been a big week for Julianna Margulies as The Good Wife celebrated 100 episodes and she looks stunning in Pamella Roland at the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation Gala dinner. The contrasting element of the crisscross bodice with the full skirt (with bonus pockets!) is elegant and adds fun twist on the monochrome trend that has been big this year. I’d maybe like to see a crimson lip tone, but other than that this is a great look for the Good Wife star.

Girls Season 3 Poster: Boots and Gowns

2 Dec

The promo wheels keep on spinning for the news season of Girls and hot on the heels of the new promo last week, HBO has now released a poster. Adam and Ray are now part of the poster ensemble, which in the past has only featured the women of Girls. There’s a fairy tale theme with Shoshanna and Marnie rocking the pastel shades and playing princess – both of these characters are very good at faking happiness. Jessa looks bored of course and has paired her gown with a pair of rugged boots and it’s a little disconcerting that Hannah is staring directly out of the poster at you. Hannah has ditched her shoes and this is my go to move when wearing heels. Oh and Adam has lost the facial fuzz and Ray has a perfect expression of disdain.

Girls S3

After the happily ever after knight in shining armor moment (ok knight with amazing Face Time reception in the street) ending of last season, this theme is somewhat appropriate and it’s given the Girls edge with the “Happily Whatever After” tagline. The primary season 2 poster featured only Hannah and this hinted at her isolation and so it’s a welcome relief to see an expanded group shot like this one. I’m also happy they’ve taken it out of the city and gone for a ‘fantasy’ image that plays with the notion of a perfect lifestyle. It’s messy like the show and while the fairy tale idea isn’t an innovative one, it is fun and season 3 looks set to capture this aspect that got lost last year.

HBO Promo Roundup: Girls, Looking and True Detective

26 Nov

2013 isn’t over yet, but we are already looking to the new and returning shows that will be hitting screens in January on HBO. Girls is back for its third season and after the GIF tease we now have a full length trailer that suggest Hannah won’t be so isolated this year. Airing the same night as Girls is new series Looking, which follows three gay best friends in the San Francisco area as they deal with dating, aging and everything in-between. There’s not a bongo in sight with the new Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson project True Detective and this looks like it’s going to be incredibly brutal and dark.

We will be talking a lot more about all three shows in the new year, but in the meantime check out the promos below and leave your reactions in the comments. The excitement for HBO’s newest offerings is pretty high for us here at TV Ate My Wardrobe and there will be plenty of costume chat among other things.

Girls Season 3 GIF Preview

21 Nov

The first look at season 3 of Girls was like an Instagram flipbook, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the second glimpse of the new episodes comes courtesy of a selection of 10 GIFs on Buzzfeed. Yep this is an HBO marketing strategy and while it may come across as super gimmicky, it’s also pretty perfect for how Girls has embraced social media as a promotional tool.

So what do these 10 GIFs reveal about the new season? Not a huge amount, but there is some Adam smooching and considering how the last season ended this shouldn’t come as a shock. Whether Adam and Hannah will be able to make it work is another question and even though the rom-com like reunion didn’t exactly thrill me, having Adam back in the main story is definitely a bonus.

Hannah was incredibly isolated for most of last year as all of her relationships fell apart and these GIFs suggest that there will be a focus on the friend aspect. For me the reason why Girls resonates is because of how it explores post-college friendships and this got lost in season 2, these GIFs suggest that this aspect will be back.

There is a also a briefest of first looks at my favorite Daily Show correspondent Jessica Williams and an epic spit take, though I’m not entirely sure I agree with the heading of this one “Because you haven’t laughed like this since last season.” Yes there were funny moments, but it was definitely more tragicomedy for the most part. I haven’t put a Q-tip anywhere near my ear since THAT episode.

For more head over to BuzzfeedGirls season 3 premieres Sunday, January 12 on HBO.

Emmys 2013: Red Carpet Highlights

23 Sep

It’s a busy day of fashion and TV thanks to last night’s Emmys (for my brief thoughts on the show head here) and while monochrome was a big trend, bold color and the standard nude tones were also big players on the red carpet. This post is for those dresses that don’t fall into one easy category and this post features a couple of dresses that still has me pondering whether they’re a hit or miss.

Let’s get to it!

Zooey Deschanel Emmys

Zooey Deschanel has a habit of wearing princess type gowns with a 1950s influence so this Barbarella looking icy blue J. Mendel number is a huge surprise. You can’t see it in this photo but the dress had a huge sexy slit up one leg and I’m so glad to see Deschanel opting for something outside of her standard wheelhouse. She looks amazing which almost makes up for the lack of New Girl nominations. Almost.

Kiernan Shipka 2013 emmys

Kiernan Shipka continues to impress with her age appropriate red carpet looks and this floral Delpozo frock is perfect for the 13-year-old; yes at 13 Shipka has already outshone every good fashion moment I have ever had. This dress could come across as too fussy which is why the ponytail/minimal makeup works and I don’t think we’re ready for Shipka to go for the Taylor Momsen raccoon eyes approach – now or ever.

Kerry Washington Emmys 2013

Kerry Washington was top of my red carpet most anticipated list and I’m disappointed with the Marchesa gown. I’m still not entirely sure how I feel about it and while I like the floral embellishments, it’s also reading wedding gown. I think if my expectations weren’t so high I would like this fine, but considering all of the other exquisite dresses she has worn this year it doesn’t quite hit the mark. It does fall into the Olivia Pope color scheme though and as always she looks flawless. It’s just not the dress I was hoping for.

Claire Danes emmys

Following closely behind Kerry Washington on that anticipated list, was Claire Danes and this is another dress that had me wrinkling my nose in disappointment, especially after what she wore last year. I’m not a huge fan of blush tone gowns which might be why I’m finding it hard to get excited about either of these dresses and with Danes this Armani Privé number washes her out. I do like the change in hairstyle and her makeup is also a win, more accessorizes would help.

[Source]

Danes does get red carpet legend status for crashing Lena Dunham’s E! interview and chatting about her Scandal obsession with the Girls star. A Romeo and Juliet reference was also thrown in regarding their Showtime/HBO standing; this has me reaching for those angel wings I’ve been holding onto for a Romeo + Juliet revival.

Christina Hendricks Emmys

Christina Hendricks doesn’t always get it right on the red carpet and designers inexplicably seem to have a hard time with her body shape, not so with Christian Siriano who always hits the mark with Hendricks. Hendricks described this gown as looking like a Sargent painting, a reference that was lost on Seacrest (Twitter quickly deduced that Madame X is the painting). Incredible from H to T (yeah I’ve been watching too much Top Model).

65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards - ArrivalsMindy Kaling’s eggplant colored Edition by Georges Chakra dress is not the sparkly number that you might expect from Kaling and as with Deschanel I like this change up. Hair and makeup are understated and because of the embellished neckline accessorize beyond a cute clutch aren’t needed.

Carrie Preston Emmy 2013

Carrie Preston won an Emmy last weekend for her guest starring work on The Good Wife and she shone on the red carpet in this pale pink Romona Keveza gown with a touch of black detail. Preston’s incredible auburn locks instantly make her standout and this is another winning look.
