Out of the Box: Look of the Week

6 Mar

Now award season is over (until the summer when the TV awards kick in) we’ve got a mixture of magazine covers, fashion campaigns and movie premieres for this week’s style highs. Michelle WilliamsMy Michelle Williams style crush goes way back and the April UK Elle cover is a fashion delight. Sometimes actress fashion house pairings don’t quite mesh from print ads to the red carpet (*cough Jennifer Lawrence/Christian Dior cough*), but Michelle Williams and Louis Vuitton has worked on every level. This is twee without being too cutesy using leather and lace; the orange is spectacular and it is just a fun cover. With Williams, editorials often lean on fragility with a hint sadness, sometimes a wisp of whimsy and I am glad this moves beyond that.

Gummer sisters and other storiesMamie and Grace Gummer join their model sister Louisa in the new & Other Stories campaign and this Co-Lab collection by Clare Vivier is a mixture of French chic with Cali cool. The range of bags, cropped denim and silk shirts on display here is making me clamor for spring and I’m already adding items to my wish list such as this leather shoulder bag Gillian Jacobs showed off on Instagram and the red one Louisa carries in the shot above.

Mamie GummerOne more shot from the new & Other Stories campaign and while I am not entirely sold on the quasi-fanny pack leather belted bag, Mamie Gummer’s slight 70s flare and shirt styling is giving me all the Jamie Lee Curtis in the first Halloween feels. The jeans aren’t as high in the waist and the shirt is a slightly different color, but it still has the same effortless quality.

Lily James and Richard Madden CinderellaLily James goes full Disney princess in Elie Saab at the premiere of Cinderella, which is surely the ideal time to embrace ethereal pretty. Ol’ King of the North (or that should read former *sob*) Richard Madden is playing his part well and if only he had been allowed to be a beardy Prince Charming.

Karen GillanRemember when Henry lent Eliza his coat on Selfie and she fashioned it into a super sexy funky outfit? Karen Gillan’s Burberry trench look is giving me a whole bunch of Selfie feels at the LA Cinderella premiere. I am still in mourning for this charming, funny and cancelled too soon delight; this outfit only adds to the Eliza and Henry sadness while looking cool at the same time. Now might be the ideal moment to pour one out to Selfie while singing along to the most heartbreaking version of “Chandelier.”

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

9 Jan

It is the first new “Out of the Box” of 2015 and after two weeks of near winter hibernation everyone is coming out to play for premieres, magazine covers, award shows and the TCA winter press tour.

Broad City S2 premiere Amy RyanBroad City returns in less than a week (Wednesday 14!) and after attending the Girls premiere a couple of days ago, Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer took center stage at the Broad City premiere party. If I was ever to attempt a form of crop top then Abbi’s outfit is my platonic ideal of this with the sliveriest of stomach skin on show. Amy Ryan is one of many guest stars we can expect to see in season 3 and this is one super happy photo of awesome people.

Broad City premiereSpeaking of awesome people and because I couldn’t chose between these two photos from the premiere here are Abbi and Ilana (her white jacket is aces) doing the group party pose with SNL’s Kate McKinnon and the always amazing Carrie Brownstein (also wearing a coat to be coveted). Drawing hearts around this.

Viola DavisAt the People’s Choice Awards (which I know no one really cares about but hey there were a handful of great outfits) Viola Davis looks stunning in an Escada column of hot-pink. Plus when she won there was a good amount of shade throwing at the awful New York Times piece that was somehow intended as a compliment towards Davis. In her speech Davis said “Thank you Shonda Rhimes, Betsy Beers and Peter Nowalk for thinking of a leading lady who looks like my classic beauty.”

Melissa McCarthyEverything about Melissa McCarthy’s outfit is a win and the leather piping gives a chic and stylish edge stopping it from being just another all black ensemble. Bonus red lipstick points.

Allison JanneyAllison Janney co-hosted these awards so there were a variety of outfits and it is this sparkly Rani Zakhem number from the red carpet is the standout. Smoking hot.

Kit HaringtonIt is going to be a weekend of a lot of dudes in suits and Kit Harington shows how it is done (even with a simple suit the tailoring can be off) at the premiere of Testament of Youth. Skinny tie perfection.

Tina Fey and Ellie KemperSwitching things up and TCA winter press tour delivered on the floral attire from Tina Fey and Ellie Kemper as they discuss their new Netflix (and previously NBC) project The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. All 13-episodes will debut March 6 and I am already obsessing over Kimmy’s super colorful wardrobe from the promo pictures.

Lena Dunham ElleLena Dunham covers the Women in TV issue of Elle and while it doesn’t quite hit the polka dot highs of her Vogue cover from this time last year, the cover shot is still a striking. Bed hair win.

Allison WilliamsAnother Girls star magazine cover and the styling of this Glamour shot is still very Allison Williams without going down the preppy or princess route. The Bottega Veneta dress and relaxed sitting/slightly hunched posing is really working for me.

Kristen Wiig Covers Elle and a Grey Gardens Fashion First

16 Jul

Kristen Wiig’s Elle cover for the August issue is relaxed cool (with a slight hint of cleav) in a Balenciaga leather jacket, grey tank, jeans and a funky bob.

Kristen Wiig Elle coverIt’s a shot that might not scream summer – particularly the jacket – and it is the editorial inside this edition that breaks ground with a fashion first as the shoot takes place at Grey Gardens; home of socialites Edith and Edie Beale (or Big and Little Edie). Mother and daughter earned icon status thanks to a 1975 documentary that showed their eccentric and reclusive side as they barely left their East Hamptons estate, even as it fell into ruins (HBO made a biopic of the same name in 2009 starring Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore).

This is not only the debut of Grey Gardens as a fashion shoot location, but also the first time it has been shot at since the ’70s documentary. In a billowing Vera Wang Collection Georgette evening robe the first photo below really captures the wistful and eccentric qualities of the former inhabitants.

Kristen Wiig GGIn the interview Wiig talks about comedy versus drama and it’s probably a topic she will be asked about more frequently thanks to her forthcoming films The Skeleton Twins and Welcome to Me (also starring other notable SNL alum Bill Hader and Will Ferrell). Wiig discusses the notion of being pigeon holed and stepping outside of this comfort zone “But I’ve always wanted to do dramatic stuff, to write and direct, do a lot of different things. Comedy is where my heart lies, but there’s also something really satisfying about being able to step away with a small crew, become a character and get to know her for a few months at a time.”

Kristen Wiig Grey GardensThe interview which you can read a longer excerpt here and on newsstands in full (both digital and print) from July 15 goes into more detail about The Skeleton Twins – you can see the trailer below – and her career before and after her seven year SNL stint.

The Alternate Zooey Deschanel Elle Cover

14 Jan

The Women in TV issue of Elle hits newsstands today and last week we grumbled about the four different covers; from composition to the styling choices. One complaint leveled at the Zooey Deschanel cover was that they stuck with the super twee image of the New Girl star rather than using this opportunity as Marie Claire had done to show a different side of Deschanel.

It turns out that Deschanel alone gets an alternate cover (most likely the subscriber issue, though the iPad version has the benefit of featuring all the cover shots) and it’s everything the first cover isn’t. Plus it isn’t awkwardly cropped and her hair isn’t threatening to take over her whole face.

photo (1)Capturing the American Hustle plunge aesthetic this Proenza Schouler silver and black silk knit gown from the Spring 2014 collection is far from playing it safe. Deschanel tends to stick to ’50s and ’60s silhouettes (as seen on the other cover) and yet I actually think there’s a whole lot about the decade of glam rock that suits her. This dress is still incredibly feminine and sparkly, it’s also pretty alluring.
