Magazine Cover Roundup: Kerry Washington, Amy Poehler and Claire Danes

3 Oct

It’s the start of the month which means new publications of several magazines and some of our favorite TV women feature on the covers. All three of these women have new seasons of their shows to promote and for one of them this has been a year of multiple cover shoots as both her star power and the popularity of her show are on the rise.

I am of course talking about Kerry Washington and at the moment she is getting at least one cover a month, sometimes two. In October she was on the cover of both Glamour and Flare, this month she features on Essence and Variety.

Kerry Washington Essence Cover

It’s a captivating cover as Washington is staring into the camera full on and she is wearing a stunning Rafael Cennamo Couture gold gown. In the interview she discusses the difference between Olivia’s style and her own “Olivia has three [fashion] modes: Work Olivia, Black-Tie Gala Olivia and At Home Olivia… My fashion is more eclectic: There’s Going to Work Kerry, which is gym clothes and Nike kicks. That’s the Bronx girl. There’s also Red Carpet Kerry and Out to Dinner With Friends Kerry.”

Kerry Washington Variety Cover

It’s Variety’s fifth annual Power of Women issue and Kerry Washington is one of five women being celebrated for her work as a member of the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities. Washington works as an arts ambassador in areas with poverty-stricken schools, using arts programs to help increase reading and maths scores as well as having a positive influence on attendance, parental involvement and enrollment. It’s a very different cover photo to her Essence shoot but just as mesmerizing. Washington’s red carpet style can’t be put in one category and her magazine covers have varied wildly in style and composition and I can’t wait to see what she features on next – personally I’m hoping for Vogue.

Amy Poehler Variety

Amy Poehler is another one of Variety’s Power of Women recipients for her work with the Worldwide Orphans Foundation. Poehler is both a fundraiser and an arts ambassador for the organization and she recently raised over $30,000 by throwing an Emmy “losers” afterparty. Co-hosting with fellow “loser” Jon Hamm the invitation stated that if you turned up with an Emmy award then your entry fee was a donation to WWO. It’s not mentioned in the article but I’m also a big fan of Poehler’s Smart Girls at the Party a website which promotes healthy self image for young women.

Claire Danes Vogue

Claire Danes covered Vogue earlier this year and now it is time for the UK issue of this publication. The cover shot is a lot softer than the US counterpart which almost feels like it is Danes’ Homeland character Carrie on the front. Wearing a tweed Louis Vuitton jacket Danes looks both relaxed and happy and you won’t be surprised to hear that I’m going to find out what lipstick color she is wearing because it’s the perfect soft pink blush for the fall season (when I’m not opting for a ’90s influence).

The Best of the Emmys 2013: Amy Poehler and Tina Fey

23 Sep

There were probably more lows than highs during the 2013 Emmy telecast, particularly during the musical numbers and rushed thank you speeches. One highlight came early on after a very lackluster opening; Tina Fey and Amy Poehler to the rescue. Heckling from the front row about how terrible the intro was (they were kidding, but there is truth in these jokes), they donned 3D glasses and had a twerking reference that didn’t feel stale. Bonus Hugh Dancy and Claire Danes laughing behind the pair.

  [Source]

They also presented the first award (that went to Merritt Wever, yay!) and took an interesting trip up to the stage.

[Source]

Neither Tina Fey nor Amy Poehler won in their acting category and while I don’t begrudge Julia Louis-Dreyfus winning for Veep, it’s hard to believe that Poehler has never won in this category (same goes for Jon Hamm and all his Mad Men nominations/no wins). As Parks and Recreation showrunner Mike Schur put on Twitter “I simply do not understand it. #Poehler

Tina Fey didn’t go home empty handed as she won in the comedy writing category with Tracey Wigfield for the 30 Rock finale.

Now to their dresses and Tina Fey is stunning in this cobalt blue Narciso Rodriguez gown. Fey has a habit of playing it safe with darker colors and this bold blue affair shows that she can work a more daring and confident look.

Tina Fey Emmys

Amy Poehler’s Basler dress is not as striking, but I do really like the pocket detail that makes this more than just another black gown. The orange Irene Neuwirth earrings are a nice touch, particularly when coupled with the simple ponytail.

Amy Poehler Emmys 2013

Amy and Tina need their own awards category for being amazing at all award shows.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

23 Aug

“Out of the Box” is dominated once again by red carpet photos, but thanks to a cobalt blue pea coat on Breaking Bad this week costuming also makes an appearance. As always this is a snapshot of what we have been watching and looking at online so if you have any favorite outfits that we have missed let us know. The fall TV season and the Emmys are approaching and so there will be more variety in the weeks to come.

Winner: Amy Poehler and Aubrey Plaza at the Afternoon Delight Premiere

Amy Poehler and Aubrey Plaza

This coupling is chosen for both their relaxed red carpet attire (Poehler is wearing some awesome blue and black Nike Dunks, sadly they are out of shot) and for how much fun they are having at this event. This continues a string of Poehler/Plaza photo opportunities including this recent fake make out session on the set of Parks and Recreation. I could gush about this pair all day but I’m also going to quickly point out the amazing APC  white peacock print sweatshirt that Plaza is wearing, while it’s not actually NBC affiliated (it can be purchased from Liberty London) Plaza is doing a good job of giving a nod to the home of Parks and Recreation. Of course no one can really replace Ann as Leslie’s BFF, but I hope Rashida Jones’ departure opens up more time for Leslie/April bonding. Look how adorable they are together.

Runner Up: Robert Sheehan at The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones Premiere in Toronto

??????????????

Last week Robert Sheehan wore an incredible paisley suit with what appeared to be glowing shoes so the above outfit could be considered a calmer approach. When it comes to suit wearing there is less opportunity to make a bold sartorial statement and Sheehan has shown just how that can be done. The leopard print Christian Louboutin loafers are striking thanks to the leather pants stopping just above the ankle and Sheehan has the right amount of confidence in his pose to pull off these different styles. The leopard print wouldn’t work with the paisley suit but with this monochromatic look it is just the right amount of flare. I’m getting Alan Cumming vibes off Sheehan’s red carpet approach, which is great as Cumming is always having fun with what he wears to these events. One thing this press tour has reminded me of is how much I still miss Nathan on Misfits.

Runner Up: Mayim Bialik at the Emmys Performers Peer Group Reception

Mayim Bialik Karen Millen

Patterns! Yes I love patterns so this mixed geometric print dress from Karen Millen is an instant hit. While patterns aren’t always figure flattering the pencil shape combined with the black contrast band across the waist ensures that it is a perfect fit for Mayim Bialik. The mesh long sleeves match the top half of the dress which also helps balance the two different halves. Makeup, hair and shoes are all simple which is exactly what an outfit like this needs.

Runner Up: Lydia (with a hand from Todd) on Breaking Bad “Buried”

todd-lydia

Color is important on Breaking Bad and Lydia’s cobalt blue pea coat really stood out in a scene that featured mostly muted greens and browns. Lydia doesn’t look like she belongs at this location; a meth lab in the middle of the desert and she certainly isn’t dressed for the occasion. After trying and failing to get Walt back in the business she has opted for Todd and his white supremacist crew to help with her quality control issue. Lydia might be ok with ordering a hit this big but she doesn’t want to see the bloody mess that she has created. This gives this scenario and absurd edge as Todd guides her through the bloodbath. The camera briefly focuses on Lydia’s (fake?) Louboutin red soles walking through the blood and dirt and her costuming shows how out of her depth she is. Blue has usually been used for Skyler (most notably when Skyler walks into the swimming pool fully clothed) and is of course the color of the meth which isn’t up to the Heisenberg standard. On an unrelated note I was so glad to see Jesse Plemons that I momentarily forgot the horrific thing he did in the first half of the season.

What is your look of the week?

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

7 Jun

There has been a couple of award shows this week with both the CFDA and Glamour magazine hosting glitzy affairs and the pre-Emmy nomination roundtables are in full swing. Some of these have already been covered here at TV Ate My Wardrobe and have featured some really fantastic looks. As always there are no real rules to this weekly feature and as always it is a snapshot of what I have been watching (and looking at online) and each pick is for a variety of reasons including; what it adds to the storyline, what it tells us about the characters involved or simply because it looks good.

Winner: Megan Draper on Mad Men “A Tale of Two Cities”

Megan hippie lookWhile the Megan Draper theories have gone from slightly crazy to Don Draper hallucinating crazy the costuming for Megan this season has shown why Janie Bryant is so revered. Megan’s closet is huge and it needs to be as she has alternates between glamorous fashion forward pieces to her more relaxed look at home that wouldn’t look out of place in 2013. In Don’s drug induced hallucination he sees Megan in hippie attire, which matches the general look of the Hollywood party they are attending. This is the most relaxed Megan has looked all season though it’s not really Megan, but Don’s projection of the perfect version of Megan; she has quit her job and she is pregnant. The thing that drew Don to Megan in the first place was how she was with his children and California is the place where he cemented their relationship from a casual fling to fiancé. They have recently discussed the state of their relationship and even though they seem better than they have been for the entire year there is still distance (and not just the physical kind) between them. Is Megan actually pregnant or is this just wishful thinking on Don’s part?

Runner Up: Adam Scott and Amy Poehler in The Greatest Event in Television History

adam scott hart to hartLast night Adult Swim aired Adam Scott’s second “Greatest Event in Television History” and this time he teamed up with Parks and Recreation co-star Amy Poehler to recreate the opening title sequence of Hart to Hart. Both look like they are having a ball with the late ’70s/early ’80s look and if I didn’t know any better I would think that this was a Ben and Leslie fantasy sequence – though that would probably involve either Game of Thrones or political faces throughout history.

Runner Up: Ellie Kemper at The Hollywood Reporter Supporting Actor Photo Shoot

Kemper

Ellie Kemper looked stunning at the CFDA Fashion Awards earlier this week and even though The Office has finished this doesn’t mean that this is the last we have seen of Kemper talking about her role on this show as she takes part in both Variety and The Hollywood Reporter’s Emmy discussions. Kemper talks about her experience coming onto The Office in season 5 when it was already a big hit and dealing with it finishing saying “the most emotional moment was when we filmed The Office finale. I was crying and crying, which is actually unusual for me.” I hadn’t watched The Office for two seasons but that final episode had me balling (one of these moments was when Joan Cusack revealed that she was Erin’s mother). As I said earlier in the week I really hope that Kemper gets to play roles beyond the standard girlfriend and funny best friend parts as she is a really terrific comedic actress.

What was your look of the week?

Adam Scott and Amy Poehler in the Greatest Event in Television History

7 Jun

Last year Adam Scott and Jon Hamm recreated the opening credit sequence of ’80s detective show Simon & Simon in “The Greatest Event in Television History” and now Scott is back, this time with Parks and Recreation co-star Amy Poehler to tackle a shot for shot recreation of the Hart to Hart titles. Credit sequences have evolved since the late ’70s when Hart to Hart premiered and now it isn’t uncommon for a show to simply have a title card or a very short theme song.

This is in part down to the increased amount of commercials and a long title sequence would reduce how much can be fit into the episode and some shows such as New Girl have a long and short version of their opening music. It’s a shame in a way that credit sequences like this don’t really exist anymore, so this is a project I can fully get behind. Plus I’m missing Parks and Rec so seeing Scott and Poehler together is a bonus.

As with the last event (which can been seen over at Adult Swim) we get to see how the credit sequence came together and you might be surprised as to how little Amy and Adam like each other considering how closely they work on Parks and Rec (this is all in jest of course). Both look fantastic in their Hart to Hart costumes with Poehler rocking the feathered hair to maximum effect.

Glamour Magazine’s “These Girls” on Love, Heartbreak and the Internet

22 May

Glamour Magazine held its second “These Girls” event this week; a night of monologues from women in TV and comedy held at Joe’s Pub in New York City. The notion of “Stars, They’re Just Like Us” is something we see weekly in tabloid magazines (“They eat ice cream!’ ‘They snap photos!’) and it generally induces eye rolling. The opposite can be said for an event like this one, where a group of famous women each perform a personal monologue that highlights some painful aspects of life that we all experience including rejection, low self confidence and social media negativity. It’s not all doom and despair, laughter as we know can help with all of these things and some very funny women including Amy Poehler (who also took part in last year), Amy Schumer and Lucy Punch performed. The night also featured Dianna Agron, Alexa Chung, Zosia Mamet, Emma Roberts and was kicked off by Gloria Steinem saying “These girls deserve my all-time favorite word, which is fan-fucking-tastic.”

these-girls-w724The internet and social media was a big topic of conversation with Lucy Punch revealing that she struggles with technology as her mother didn’t want her to learn how to type – she didn’t want her daughter to end up as a secretary. Punch also told the audience that she is “terrified of being misjudged by thousands of faceless Twitterers,” something I’m sure we can all relate to. Emma Roberts followed on with this theme of facing online criticism after she tried to attempt a ‘normal life’ by going to college, instead it made her realize that maybe normal for her is a movie set and a particularly scathing blog post hammered home this idea. Roberts joked that “I do have high hopes. When I’m 30, playing 21, maybe I’ll have the graduation I always dreamed of.” Dianna Agron continued with this theme of figuring out who you are and how it takes time explaining that she had an “11-year awkward phase.”

How we use social media to judge other people was the theme of Alexa Chung’s “Heartbreak Heals, but Instagram is Forever” as she talked about seeing your ex-boyfriends new girlfriend on Instagram and how filters will always make them look more attractive. Chung also suggested that “Every time you post a picture of yourself looking fake happy, a fairy dies.” These are wise words to live by as a happy profile page doesn’t automatically give you the perfect life you are projecting; this also applies to the content on the pages of other people.

amy-schumer-tg-w724

Comedian Amy Schumer added to this by talking about feelings of low self-esteem during college and how even now one comment is enough to break you. Her response to these criticisms, about her weight and her looks is this and it’s wonderful: “Fuck that. I say if I’m beautiful. I say if I’m strong … I will never apologize. I stand here and I’m amazing for you, not because of you. I am not who I sleep with … I am not my weight. I am myself.”

Ah Millennials, the generation that received this Time cover (here are 5 alternate better versions) and also the subject of Girls’ Zosia Mamet’s “Generation ‘I Want it Now.'” Mamet took part in last year’s “These Girls” and discussed her adventures in dating, this year she talks about falling in love and how technology still makes her anxious when it comes to relationships. Being part of this generation means that some things are available at the tap of a screen, but love isn’t something that is necessarily obtainable at a click of a button. It’s all about balance and it turns out like most people Mamet doesn’t have the answer “How do we reconcile the excitement of impulse with the proven value of time? Fuck if I know.”

amy-poehler-tg-w352

The night ended with Amy Poehler singing Alicia Keys’ “Girl on Fire” and sadly there is no video of this yet, come on internet do your best work. You can find regular Amy Poehler advice over at her “Ask Amy” page which is aimed at teenage girls but really works no matter how old you are.

Parks and Recreation Season 5 Finale “Are You Better Off?”

3 May

The Parks and Recreation season 5 finale asks the town of Pawnee “Are You Better Off Than a Year Ago?” This time last year I hadn’t watched any of Parks and Recreation and now it features in my top five shows, so my answer to this question is an emphatic “Yes.” Summer is the time for enjoying warmer weather, but it’s the perfect opportunity to catch up on those shows that everyone is talking about that you somehow missed (there is a project for this year that I will announce soon). Parks and Rec was the 2012 choice (along with copious amounts of the Olympics) and after a bumpy start, I quickly fell in love with these characters and Pawnee.

There are two different types of marathon watches; the show that has finished (I just watched all of The West Wing for the first time recently) and the show that is still on air. Parks and Rec obviously falls into the latter category and that means going from a season in a week to an episode a week. I now also have to suffer through the “will it get renewed?” nerves. Thankfully this Vulture article has soothed any worries I had (and really at this point it’s still a good show for NBC to have despite the low ratings).

Parks and Rec finaleBack to the finale now that you’ve had my history of how I started watching this show and while the end of season 5 was perhaps more muted than Leslie’s triumphant victory last year or Li’l Sebastian’s memorial that closed out season 3, it showcased everything that makes Parks and Rec one of the funniest and smartest sitcoms. There’s no other comedy that makes me laugh or get teary as much as this one and that’s because they have created a well rounded group of characters for us to laugh with and cheer on with their endeavors. Each of these characters has progressed from where we left them at the end of season 4, so when Leslie asks this question to the town they can all answer yes even if over 300 people are mad at the changers that Leslie has made and now want to recall her.

April’s story has been the stand out for me as she started the year in Washington D.C. as Ben’s assistant while he worked on a campaign and she’s now been accepted into veterinary school. Animals have always been preferable to April (“I hate people”) and the gradual move towards this career hasn’t felt forced. She still gets to be the same April who suggests burning Rent-a-Swag to the ground for the insurance money, but she also has a career goal to go with the eye rolls and the acerbic wit. April is in a similar position to where Andy was at the end of last season as she strives towards her dream job.

Not everything in Pawnee goes the right way for these characters as Andy remains the optimist with his Bert Macklin persona, but without the police officer role that he wanted so much this year. Is Andy the only one who isn’t better off when it comes to career? Even if he didn’t get his dream job Andy does still have April and he’s more intuitive than his goofy disposition suggests. On a completely different note and it won’t be a huge surprise for anyone who reads this blog, but I also really want April’s shirt in the photo below.

April finale

Like April, Tom has improved who he is this year as he opened his own business that has been a roaring success. So much so that there is a mystery person wanting to buy Rent-a-Swag and when Tom turns this person down, they’re now going to set up a rival business across the street. Who is this mystery buyer? Sadly for Tom it’s unlikely to be either Diddy or Jay Z.

Donna is still fantastic and my only gripe is that we don’t get enough of her. Donna is one of the best advice givers on this show, whether it is business related for Tom or which Game of Thrones characters can “get it” (the answer is all of them).

Over this season we have seen Leslie navigate through the many obstacles that a role in politics brings and this was neatly demonstrated at the town hall meeting as we saw a list of gripes against the changes she has implemented in Pawnee. The obesity issue that has been a long running joke (they’ve gone from 4th to 9th most obese town in America) featured heavily and it’s so very wrong that I’m intrigued by the triple decker pancake breakfast pizza that gets mentioned (see also macaroni and cheese pizza). They’re not all bad testimonials and it was good to see Jason Schwartzman and Brandi Maxxx pop up in support of Leslie (Brandi Maxxx was in both Argo and “Our Goo”).

Work is where the struggle is for Leslie as she is in a happy relationship (and the wedding episode/proposal are highlights of season 5) with Ben. Ben reminds Leslie of how much this job means to her and the more she achieves, the more she will anger some people. Leslie’s press conference manages to be both heartfelt and name at least five dance movies I haven’t seen and it is moments like this that show the true genius of Parks and Recreation and Amy Poehler.

NBYY5gB

The big mystery of the finale is who is pregnant and this is a job for Bert Macklin! Anne teams up with Andy when it soon becomes clear that it’s not her (but she is having lots of ridiculous sex with Chris – who is also the nipple king). I bought the April fake out but the real answer is far juicier. In “Win, Lose, or Draw” Ron told Ben that things worked for Ben and Leslie because they’re the type of people who “like to hold hands and jump off cliffs together.” Ron likes things to stay the same (he owns one bowl and has had the same haircut since 1978) and he emphasizes this point while he’s talking to Andy, right before Diane walks in and changes his life forever. Thanks to the magic of Tumblr you can relive this moment in gif form.

I’m hoping that whatever show I choose as my summer catch-up project brings me as much joy as Parks and Recreation and I will once again reply “Yes” to the question “Are You Better Off Than a Year Ago?”

Amy Poehler is a Fabulous 1930s Cosmo Cover Star

30 Apr

Amy Poehler’s appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon took a fun turn when she recreated the cover of a 1930s issue of Cosmopolitan. Last month on Cosmopolitan’s site they posted the uncanny likeness after they had been digging through their vintage archives. The headlines in the 30s were a lot different to now boasting “2 Complete Short Novels” as opposed to “When Your Vagina Acts Weird After Sex.” How things have changed.

Thanks to some helpful props of a glass of champagne and a super cute hat Poehler demonstrated that she does indeed look like the cover (though she claims it looks more like her grandma). This impression also includes both Poehler and Fallon using old timey voices (my favorite kind) and Poehler suggesting that the hat has magical drunk inducing powers.

The high waisted pencil skirt/red polka dot blouse combination that Amy Poehler is rocking with her shorter hair is a really good look (. The video also includes a clip of this Thursday’s Parks and Recreation season 5 finale.
