Variety Comedy Actress Emmy Roundtable Discussions

5 Jun

The pre-Emmy nomination roundtables are in full flow and Variety has produced supporting and lead actor/actress discussions in both comedy and drama categories. These panels are all around 15 minutes long and feature actors from both cable and network shows.

comedy lead

Today I am going to focus on the comedy actresses (plus it’s the unofficial Ellie Kemper week here at TV Ate My Wardrobe) and the shows these are the shows that are represented; New GirlEnlightenedVeepSuburgatoryThe Office, The Mindy Project, 2 Broke GirlsThe Big Bang Theory and Cougar Town.  Network and cable shows feature, along with multi-cam and single camera shows. Some of the participants are also involved behind the scenes as Zooey Deschanel is a producer on New Girl and both Laura Dern and Mindy Kaling are creators of their respective shows. Mindy Kaling is also in the writers’ room on The Mindy Project and she mentions that this helps the show be a little more feminist.

The difference in a cable show versus a network one is a lot to do with format and time restrictions; network sitcoms have to be the same length every week, whereas on cable the time can vary by a substantial amount. Network shows have a set commercial break pattern which could stifle the creative element, but all of the shows featured have found a way to work within these parameters.

When they shot Enlightened (which HBO has sadly cancelled) they had all of the scripts for the season written ahead of time, a show like New Girl adds things at the last minute and as both Zooey Deschanel and Hannah Simone mention their scripts often change from the table read to the day of shooting. Simone adds that she is constantly surprised by where they take the characters as they aren’t usually given advance notice of their season long arc. This organic approach has really helped a show like New Girl particularly with the big ‘will they/won’t they’ story in season 2. It isn’t just New Girl that has this style as Busy Philipps’ comments about Cougar Town sound like they share a similar approach. For the shows that are filmed in front of a live studio audience such as The Big Bang Theory it sounds like it needs to be more structured that this. On Veep they workshop the episode ahead of time as this is a process that creator Armando Innaucci favors and the cable format aids this. There is also a discussion about Netflix and how this digital model is even more flexible than both cable and network.

First Look at the BBC’s Elizabeth Taylor/Richard Burton Biopic

5 Jun

We’ve had Lifetime’s Liz & Dick, now it’s time for the BBC’s Burton & Taylor with The Wire’s Dominic West and Oscar nominee Helena Bonham Carter playing the title roles. The 90-minute drama is set in 1983 when the couple were reunited in the Noël Coward’s play Private Lives. The couple had already been married and divorced twice by this point and this biopic will focus on their fractured relationship as it played out in both the private and public eye.

Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor are considered to be one of the most fraught and passionate romance stories of the twentieth century and while Liz & Dick is considered to be mess (see the Fug Girls “Fug the Fromage” for a rundown of how terrible it looks) the creative talent behind Burton & Taylor will hopefully produce a biopic worthy of their story.

Burton and Taylor

In a recent interview with Vogue, Helena Bonham Carter explains that “It’s about two people who can’t live with each other and can’t live without each other. It’s very sad. And very touching.” Bonham Carter tells the magazine that she loves researching a character and luckily for her there is a wealth of information on this epic romance including passionate love letters.

Burton & Taylor airs on BBC 4 and BBC America later this year.

Girls and Downton Abbey Win at the Glamour Awards

5 Jun

The UK Glamour Magazine Awards were held at Berkeley Square Gardens in Mayfair, London last night. A host of stars attended the event that honored women in TV, film, fashion and music. So who were the big winners?

Chris O'Dowd Rashida Jones

Chris O’Dowd was on hand to present Parks and Recreation star Rashida Jones with the Film Maker of the Year award for Celeste and Jesse Forever (which was one of my favorite films from last year and is currently in my DVD player). In her acceptance speech Jones explains her outfit saying “I wore these pajamas through the entire year since I made my movie.” Jones then followed this up with “I would like to thank Jo Elvin and GLAMOUR for recognising my filmmaking… It’s very fitting for me to be winning an award that is so glamorous, because as everyone knows, it’s very glamorous making an independent movie.” As with Sofia Coppola’s pajama choice at the Met Gala I salute this look; the silk floral Erdem two-piece suits the relaxed atmosphere of these awards. Also Chris O’Dowd is super tall.

Joanne Frogatt Zosia Mamet

The TV Actress category is split into International and UK meaning that two of the most talked about shows received these accolades. Zosia Mamet took home the International prize for her role as Shoshanna on GirlsGirls has received a lot of accolades in the past year but this is the first individual award for Mamet.

Matthew Rhys presented this award and Mamet thanked the UK “for embracing Girls as much as the US has.” Wearing a black Preen dress with floral embroidery Mamet looked very happy posing with her Glamour statue, which isn’t always the case for Mamet on the red carpet. Mamet has been popular with Glamour magazine as she also recently took part in their “These Girls” event in New York.

One show that is just as popular on both sides of the Atlantic is Downton Abbey and so it isn’t surprising that an actress from this show scooped the UK prize. Joanne Froggatt who plays Anna, the head housemaid received this award from fellow Downton Abbey co-star Allen Leech. Froggatt thanked the magazine readers for voting for her adding that is has “made me very, very happy”

Rebel Wilson

It’s been a good year for Rebel Wilson as she has taken the film world by storm with roles in Pitch Perfect and Pain & Gain, as well as hosting the MTV Movie Awards. Wilson will be making the transition to TV in the fall with her ABC show Super Fun Night. Wilson is also the cover star of the new issue of Glamour and she tweeted a photo of it; Wilson is wearing a whole lot of jewels and bubbles and not much else in the shot. Wilson gave fellow Aussie Kylie Minogue a shout out in her speech “Thank you so much Kylie, I just feel so lucky, lucky, lucky, lucky.”

Clare Balding Joan Collins

Presenter of the Year could only really go to one woman and that is the extraordinary Clare Balding after collecting a special award from BAFTA last month. Balding was the highlight of the presenting team at the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and in her speech she mentioned an important current political moment “While here at dinner tonight …the House of Lords voted 2-1 in favour of supporting the equal marriage bill… Joan Collins, who was sitting on my table, asked me when me and Alice (Arnold) are going to get married. Alice said in three years, which I didn’t know but apparently that’s right.” Congratulations Clare!

Kerry Washington and Ellie Kemper at the CFDA Awards

4 Jun

Last night at the Lincoln Center in New York all the big names in fashion gathered for the 2013 CFDA Fashion Awards and they were joined by the models and actresses who wear their gowns on the red carpet. This included Kerry Washington who presented Proenza Schouler designers Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez with the Womenswear Designer of the Year award and Washington looked stunning in a bold yellow Jason Wu gown (the big color of the season). Washington opted for simple hair and makeup to compliment the strong hue of the dress and the wooden clutch is the perfect addition.

Kerry Washington CFDAMy favorite look of the night comes from The Office’s Ellie Kemper in a black Naeem Khan dress with gold starburst embroidery. Pairing this dress with a gold accessories including Rupert Sanderson heels and JustFab clutch could be too matchy matchy, but because they aren’t all the same shade of gold it works. Like Washington, Kemper’s hair is simple and but she works both a strong lip color and bold earrings that create a balance for this look.

photo (3)In the recent comedy issue of GQ magazine Ellie Kemper wrote a satirical piece asking “Can Men Be Funny?” This is in response to the many think pieces over the years asking the same question about women. It includes such wonderful lines as this “Guys, do you want to know a secret? You don’t have to be funny in order to attract us. Believe us, between your scalps and your calves, you’ve already got us. Your narrow, decrescendoing hips, and your soft, very hairy thighs leave us breathless. The truth is, there is no evolutionary cause for you to have to be funny.” It’s obviously a very tongue-in-cheek essay (though some in the comments don’t seem to realize this) and I’m glad that a publication like GQ included it, despite some of the reactions. The “are women funny?” debate is as tired as the “can women have it all?” discussion and pieces like this show how ridiculous that question is.

In the Office series finale Kemper wore one of my favorite dresses of this TV season (and somehow it hasn’t featured on “Look of the Week”) at Dwight and Angela’s wedding. It’s a Ted Baker London floral ‘Wallpaper’ Pleated A-Line Dress and can be seen in this behind the scenes shot.

1368792802_the-office-441I’m really looking forward to see what Kemper does in her post-Office roles, I expect we might see her guest starring on The Mindy Project again but I hope she gets roles beyond the ‘funny best friend’ or the girlfriend who only has 5 lines in an Owen Wilson/Vince Vaughn comedy (though I fear this might be what happens). If we can get some more Subtle Sexuality then I would be more than pleased, maybe with a Taylor Swift twist as with their last outing “The Girl Next Door.”

Mad Men Music Monday

3 Jun

Mad Men ended this week with an unexpected sight as Pete Campbell strolled up to Stan and took his joint off him; instead of destroying it, Pete instead took a seat and started to smoking it. Janis Joplin’s “Piece of my Heart” kicked in as Pete continued to smoke, with a look of contempt at all those around him (and Vincent Kartheiser showing off his best bitchface). This version of the song is performed by Joplin’s band Big Brother and the Holding Company and is from 1968 (the year of the episode).

“A Tale of Two Cities” is all about the fractured climate in both the office and the nation as discontent is spreading and this felt like Pete’s way of succumbing to a system that is no longer following the rules. Janis Joplin is a big part of the counterculture and so it is fitting that this song plays over this episode and her death in 1970 (just 16 days after Jimi Hendrix died) reveals the darker side of this era; a side that Mad Men is showing in episodes like this.

How Betty Got Her Groove Back and other Mad Men Musings

2 Jun

A few week’s ago I was joined by Kerensa Cadenas to talk about season 6 of Mad Men and specifically Don Draper losing his charismatic sheen. I thought it was time to catch up with Kerensa and see if these feelings towards Don have changed. So come join us to find out what we think of Don, those Megan/Bob Benson conspiracy theories and how Betty became the smartest person on the show.

MM_609_MY_0221_0189Emma: We have so much to talk about from the most recent episode (which was terrific) including; the state of Don, Peggy’s love/work life, all things Bob Benson (are his intentions honourable? Plus those short shorts), how Betty got her groove back and what the merger has added to this season.

First I want to mention the last discussion we had which came after episode 4 (“To Have and to Hold“) and this is when both of us were having some very strong, negative Don feelings and I was wondering how you feel about Don now that we are episode 9? It was funny that after we raged about Don so much after the start of the season, episode 5 showed Don in a pretty good light; he got to have a good father/son moment with Bobby (this Bobby is a lot of fun) and the lack of Sylvia made him seem less reprehensible. They also showed a great Don pitch moment, not to a client but Ted as he proposed the merger.

So Don’s great again, right? Not so much as he tried to assert his dominance with Sylvia in the bedroom and then thanks to her rejection he was reduced to a creepy hallway lurker. He’s probably never looked as pathetic as he did in his drugged up state desperately reaching for the woman he can’t have. This was coupled with some rather on the nose flashbacks (the prostitute who nursed him back to health was also the first woman he slept with – yep possibly the most overt Madonna/whore complex on TV in flashback form) and my sympathy with Don is pretty low all over again.

The merger has led to some interesting conflicts and comparisons as Ted and Don have been dick swinging with each other and it looks like Peggy is caught between the two men. In the last episode Peggy told Don that Ted “never makes me feel this way” as Don has a tendency to unload on Peggy and take all of his frustration out on her. Don’s response is that Ted “doesn’t know you” and it feels like he is using his knowledge of her past over her. In a way Ted doesn’t know her and this is clear when he rejects Peggy at the end of the episode when she tells him what happened with Abe (leaving out the part where she was the one who stabbed him). Ted is all fake smiles and doesn’t act like he knows her at all so maybe Don had a point. Peggy is caught between two bosses; one that she has romantic feelings for and one that treats her like shit. In a moment like this I want her to head to one of three places; for a cigarette with Joan, for a joint with Stan (so we can get another moment like this) or for cocktails with Megan.

MM_609_MY_0225_0800Speaking of the latter, I just really want something good to happen with Megan; we both spoke before about how much we like this character and it sucks that she is caught up in this Don Draper cycle. The marriage has felt doomed since the premiere (or really from the S5 finale) when they showed that Don isn’t listening to what she is saying. This has been repeated throughout the season and Megan has confessed these feelings of loneliness to her mother (who told her to make Don think of sex) and her co-star Arlene, who tried to kiss her. As you mentioned in an earlier email THAT Betty line summed up Don amazingly well:

“That poor girl. She doesn’t know that loving you is the worst way to get to you.”

I want to talk Betty, because somehow they have made this character likeable again (and she was definitely this episode’s MVP) but first I would like to hear your Don thoughts.

Kerensa: Since the last time we discussed Mad Men, my feelings for Don haven’t really changed. I’m continually frustrated by his actions, his lack of respect for basically everyone, all the “dick swinging” as you said and those flashbacks so over the top. Basically, every time Don’t onscreen, I’m doing this. And like we’ve talked about I like having irredeemable characters but for whatever reason as of late, I just don’t enjoy Don.

And that hall scene with Sylvia was one of the lowest, I think that we’ve seen Don, but that SONG. I feel like at the end of this week’s episode, we are yet again led to believe that maybe Don will try to commit to Megan again. But I doubt it.

And we must talk Betty because that line about Don–maybe was the most accurate description of him in the whole series.

MM_609_MY_0221_0540Emma: Yeah Betty got her groove back and she totally owned every scene with Don (and every scene she was in really). When we last talked about Betty I mentioned that this season was the first time in a long time that I liked this character and she’s continued to be this way this season. I find it interesting that we haven’t seen how Betty lost the weight (and I’m sure it isn’t through the Weight Watchers group she was attending) but I’m glad she’s not the punching bag that she’s been reduced to in past seasons. She was the one who seduced Don, she was the one who held all the power during their post-coital chat (Don likes to hug apparently and sex isn’t intimate, hmm). She delivered THE line that perfectly sums him up and the next day she’s gone, back to the life she loves while Don watches on alone.

I’m also glad that we got to see Betty being a good mother as this is another area where she’s been cold in the past. Though she does neglect to mention Gene (and like Don even considers Gene if what he said to Megan about Bobby is any indication), poor Gene. One day you will mean something. And thankfully they’ve given Bobby a personality this year.

What are your Betty thoughts?

Also the Mad Men conspiracy theories are going through the roof this week – first Bob continues to throw up major question marks (while looking totally cute in his short shorts) and now the links between Megan and Sharon Tate are in the mix after Megan wore this T-shirt. Is Megan doomed?

MM_609_MY_0221_1015Kerensa: It was really great to see Betty in that power position with Don because I feel like he made her feel less than that all the time while they were married.  And it does seem that she is happy with Henry because I feel like Henry treats her with respect that Don never did. And also, Betty will be an AMAZING politicians wife, like she’s gonna be running the show. Guaranteed.

That line is the most perfect thing this show has ever done. And I think was probably so telling to Don–who likes to think he’s this enigma–that there are people there who DO see through all his shit. I also wonder if hearing all that #realtalk from Betty will change things for him? I’m guessing not, but we can hope I guess.

Also, Don Draper likes spooning? Really? Like that’s a scenario I can’t imagine. I feel like he’d be one of those guys that you’d assume would just leave right after sex and then there he is being big spoon and you’d be supremely confused. And you KNOW he always has to be big spoon.

On to the conspiracies!

Yeah, what is going on with Bob? I’ve heard so many weird things–he’s Don’s son, the smoke monster (jk) or my favorite was that he’s actually Joan’s new gay BFF. Whatever is going on with Bob, as long as they keep putting James Wolk in short shorts, I won’t complain about Don. I swear.

Now, the Megan/Sharon Tate theory was super compelling to me. I just watched Robert Hendrickson’s documentary Manson (1973) at a local theater, so Sharon Tate and the Manson killings have been at the forefront of my mind. I feel like everything that’s been going on with Megan this season, despite her acting success, has at least for me been accompanied by this sense of dread and doom. I can’t pinpoint it, but every time I see her onscreen I just have this terrible feeling. And I really like Megan–as I know you do–so I really, really don’t want that to be the case.

What do you think about all the conspiracies?

MM_609_MY_0225_0493Emma: I just did a spit take at the image of Don wanting to be the big spoon. He really doesn’t seem to be the snuggling type.

The thing about Don is that he says he wants to change but I don’t know if he really does and it’s something they’ve repeated throughout. I think he likes the idea of being saved, but not the results. What happens if he can’t save the one he is with? And this brings me to the recent Mad Men conspiracy theories and I love all of this chatter, even if they are somewhat outlandish. Like you there’s something about Megan’s scenes this year that have this doom and gloom feeling. Maybe it’s the fact that she’s so alone and we know that Don will never love her the way he did before the orange sherbet incident and when she was still at SCDP or perhaps it’s something more sinister.

I was going to ask you about that documentary as the Manson Family murders are often mentioned when people discuss the end of the 60s and how this was the really dark side of the flower power era. Is this something that was discussed in this documentary?

On one hand I really don’t want Megan to die (because I like her) but in terms of the story I think a loss like this would have a huge impact on Don and how he behaves. Or it could send him into a destruction spiral. My other thought was with last year’s suicide clues everyone figured it might be Pete, but instead it was Lane – could the same happen this year? Instead of Megan it could be her co-star Arlene who is pretty relaxed about how safe it is to walk through Central Park at night? The impact from Arlene’s death would be small so it’s unlikely to be her. Other potentials could be Betty, who we’ve also seen head into the city without thinking of her surroundings and they’ve also done the classic trick of making the audience like her again. I know Matt Weiner loves Betty and so I also think this won’t happen as the political storyline is too juicy. So we swing back to Megan. I love most of these theories come from a t-shirt and sirens.

Now to our favourite short shorts wearing enigma and Bob Benson. The brilliance of this character is how much my opinion changes as to whether he is doing these things for good or bad (to put it simply) throughout an episode. I was so happy to see that he was with Joan (though things didn’t seem romantic adding credence to the gay theory) but then I was sure he was going to tell Pete about Roger’s stop. Instead he told a story about his father (he told Ken his father is dead, Ken is crazy suspicious of Bob) and showed concern for Pete’s predicament. He’s been hitching his wagon to Pete all season and his concern seems genuine but why? Pete’s mother mentioned that Pete’s father had affairs so maybe he’s Pete’s illegitimate half brother?!?! And it’s not as crazy as the Don relation and this show does love illegitimate children.

One non conspiracy relating question – what do you think of Pete and Joan’s conversations of late? Is he trying to hit on her? It’s also interesting that Joan holds Pete in such high regard (she claims that he’s the only one who hasn’t broken a promise to her) even though he set up the Jaguar business.

MM_609_MY_0225_1137Kerensa: Yeah, that was something that was mentioned in the Manson documentary. I also recently saw The Source Family–about another cult but one on the more “happy” end of the spectrum if you will. And both discussed the ways in which that time era–with all its upheaval–was a time that these things could be formed.

I agree with that. Megan could totally be a red herring. And I don’t think it’s Arlene because like you said there would be little to no impact on the world of our characters. I don’t want it to be Betty either, but could you imagine the fallout from that? I mean I think that would destroy Don.

I really don’t want Bob to be a bad guy. I think basically everyone on this show is a bad person–so it would be refreshing to have a character that doesn’t have any sort of agenda. And I really hope him and Joan are together together! I dunno about this theory of him as Pete’s half brother. I see where you are coming from with it, but I don’t think that’s gonna happen. And if it does (or Bob as Don’s son) that’s really pushing Mad Men into major soap opera territory.

With Pete and Joan, I feel like he’s just lonely. His life’s a mess and he doesn’t have anyone to talk to. He really has no one he can confide in at the office and Joan, if I was Pete, would be the person I would go to because she’s the most levelheaded one there.

Emma: Yes the brother theory is totally soapy and so I expect they won’t go this far. I hope you’re right about Bob being a good person, this show sure needs one of those.

Will we find out more about Bob tonight?

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

31 May

It’s been a Mad Men heavy week here at TV Ate My Wardrobe and this continues with today’s edition of “Look of the Week.” There are no real rules to this weekly feature and as always it is a snapshot of what I have been watching (and looking at online) and each pick is for a variety of reasons including; what it adds to the storyline, what it tells us about the characters involved or simply because it looks good. One person who would have been included is Diane Kruger but her street style was discussed in an earlier post and with The Bridge nearing its premiere date expect to see more Kruger on here (and hopefully more Joshua Jackson).

Winner: Bob Benson on Mad Men “The Better Half”

Bob Benson Wears Short ShortsThere could only be one winner really and it’s Bob Benson in his short shorts as he prepares to spend the day at the beach with Joan and her son Kevin. It’s a hard look to pull off and James Wolk does just that as he moves about with ease in Joan’s apartment, he even manages to look not too awkward when Roger drops by unannounced. This week has been a big one for Mad Men conspiracy theories (for more on Megan’s t-shirt head here) and Bob is at the center of these as his intentions are still unclear; is he a good guy trying to get his career going or is there something more nefarious going on? It’s been a fun game to play so far and I’m glad that even in the warm weather and a trip to the beach Bob still has his cup of coffee from Anthora. Bob doesn’t need an amphetamine laced injection as long as he has a cup of coffee then he has boundless energy.

Runner Up: Elisabeth Moss and Kerry Washington in The Hollywood Reporter Magazine

HR_ROUND_TABLE_SHOT_02_029_v6_B_a_p HR_ROUND_TABLE_SHOT_11_004_v5_B_a_pThis is the second week in a row that Elisabeth Moss has appeared in a non Mad Men related capacity (last week was all about her new haircut) and this photo is part of The Hollywood Reporter’drama actress roundtable. There is a variety of styling on this front cover ranging from casual to fancy; Scandal’s Kerry Washington looks relaxed and chic in black vest and white trousers (with a stripe of black to add to the monochromatic theme) and Elisabeth Moss could rock up to a cocktail party in this black and white dress and towering heels. This shoot is much better than last year’s all gown theme and they’ve picked styles that suit each actress. The hair and make-up is similar enough without looking like they’ve matched everyone in a Stepford Wives manner (and I’ve started a lipstick treasure hunt to find out Elisabeth Moss’ shade/brand. There will be updates).

Runner Up: Dr Alana Bloom on Hannibal “Trou Normand”

Dr Bloom, Hannibal, Will

Dr Bloom

First of all I want to say how happy I am that Hannibal has been renewed for a second season as I was starting to worry about the fate of the show and now I can get back to worrying about the fate of Dr. Alana Bloom. These photos are from last week’s episode and I wanted to feature this colorful costuming that stands out amongst the dark attire of all around her. The skirt is a deep red and paired with the patterned red blouse Dr Bloom is a striking figure in the gloom. It’s a pretty good representation of how Alana fits into the shows narrative as she has become a figure of light for Will as their relationship has developed – a kiss occurred in the previous episode and Alana admitted that she has feelings for Will but she can’t act on them yet while he is unstable. Alana is also the character who is the most in the dark when it comes to Abigail Hobbs; Jack rightly doesn’t trust Abigail and Will has figured out that Abigail is a killer. Alana implicitly trusts Hannibal and this could be her downfall as she tells Jack “He has no reason to lie about any of this.” The audience knows this isn’t the case and I’m going to spend the rest of the season worrying about what will happen to Dr Bloom. She does provide balance and reason to the team and her costuming is functional but still fashionable; wrap around dresses are a favorite. It’s this balance that I hope will keep this character around for season 2 (it’s so nice to write that knowing there is going to be a season 2).

Who was your look of the week?

What’s in a T-Shirt? The Mad Men Megan Conspiracy Theory

30 May

Coming this Sunday I will be joined by Kerensa Cadenas to follow up our last Mad Men chat (“Falling Out of Love with Don Draper“) and one thing that we will definitely be talking about is the Megan Draper as Sharon Tate conspiracy theory that set Twitter alight yesterday. I just want to address it prior to this longer discussion as it seems to be part of the big Mad Men chatter that follows on from last season’s ‘Pete Campbell is going to kill himself’ clues. This ended with Lane hanging himself instead; is this another misdirect?

Megan balconyLet’s start with the t-shirt, which on a first watch I thought nothing more than “it’s a cute shirt” and it must be a warm night for Megan to be standing out on the balcony in so little. While I’m assuming that it is what Megan will be wearing to bed it’s very different to the formal nightwear that the female characters tend to wear on this show and Megan’s clothes in this episode were the most modern that we have seen so far. This isn’t in an ‘out there’ fashion forward way as with some of the other pieces we have seen this season, but as casual clothes that wouldn’t look out of place on the high street today.

While none of these things point towards the idea that Megan is in danger some eagle eyed viewers over at Reddit noticed that this t-shirt is one that was modelled by murdered actress Sharon Tate (who was killed a year later in 1969 by the Manson Family). Mad Men costume designer Janie Bryant then confirmed on Twitter that it was “no coincidence” and this set in motion a chain of theorizing. Aspects that might point to a violent end for Megan include; the loud sirens in two of Megan’s scenes, both of Abe’s stabbing incidents, the mention of shootings in Central Park, the intruder in the previous episode, Megan is an actress as was Sharon Tate and Megan’s Sharon Tate like appearance in the promo photos for this season (Tom and Lorenzo are as usual producing some exceptional costume analysis on their weekly “Mad Style” feature and were the ones to originally mention this).

Other signs that point to a potentially grizzly end for Megan include the key art for this season, featuring a heavy police presence in the background. This could just be a reflection of the unrest that is being felt across the country and as I mentioned in my review I thought the sirens could be a sign that all of New York is experiencing a rise in crime; with the foreshadowing pointing to her co-star Arlene’s future and not Megan. I also thought it was interesting that neither Megan and Don mentioned the sirens, mostly likely because they have become used to them. Megan has become increasingly isolated as the season has progressed and if a suicide hadn’t happened last season then this might be part of the discussion instead of murder.

Megan tshirtAt The Daily Beast Jace Lacob has spoken to Janie Bryant about this choice of shirt for Megan and instead of pointing to Tate’s fate she explains that “It’s the Vietnam star. We saw a little bit of how Megan was so upset after Bobby Kennedy was shot, it really is so much a part of the turmoil happening during that period.” This might be Bryant attempting to deflect attention away from what could potentially be a huge spoiler (and we all know how creator Matthew Weiner feels about those) but it does also tie in with the amount of crime that is happening in the city and the political unrest nationwide.

So is this one conspiracy theory too many? Sunday’s discussion will also feature the enigma that is Bob Benson and plenty of theories have been popping up about this character as well. This is part of the fun surrounding Mad Men discourse; the subtext could be pointing to something completely different and thanks to the lack of spoilers (I know Weiner is a bit over the top with this but I also think it works for this show) it means that conversation like this can develop. It’s reminds me of watching Lost when we were all trying to understand the smoke monster and the numbers; it’s these aspects that can bring an audience together as we try to collectively figure out what these clues mean.

Is this t-shirt a sign of Megan’s doom or just a sign of a turbulent time? Should Megan’s co-star Arlene be worried about her future? What are the most outlandish Mad Men conspiracy theories that you have heard?

Hollywood Reporter’s 2013 Drama Actress Roundtable

30 May

It’s the time of year when The Hollywood Reporter produces Emmy related TV roundtable discussions and while the quality of the conversations varies, the drama actress one is always lively and is generally my favourite of the bunch. Once again they have a group of women from shows that cover both network and cable, with the added new platform of Netflix to discuss their roles on TV, the industry and their past experiences. This year the participants are Monica Potter (Parenthood), Kerry Washington (Scandal), Kate Mara (House of Cards), Connie Britton (Nashville), Anna Gunn (Breaking Bad) and Elisabeth Moss (Mad MenTop of the Lake).

Hollywood reporter cover

The nature of this kind of roundtable discussion means that some candid remarks are made, but the participants are also guarded as they tell stories of bad experiences but don’t fill in all of the details. Monica Potter discusses her first post-baby audition where she was considered “too fat” for the role and body image is a topic that comes up more than once (I’m intrigued as to whether the guys will cover this area, doubtful but you never know as Hollywood has body issues with both genders). Elisabeth Moss rightly mentions that “It’s not just actresses, it’s all women. We all have this perception of what we’re supposed to look like.”

Expectations of how an actress should look comes up later but in a different way as they mention the backhanded compliments that people give such as they look “younger/skinnier” in real life. So don’t ever say this, it’s bad. This is part of the notion of intimacy between the viewer and the characters that come into our living rooms on a weekly basis and how the relationship is different between movies and TV; there is an investment in TV that doesn’t exist in the same way as in movies that generally have a beginning, a middle and end (depending on how long running the franchise is).

One aspect that I enjoy about these discussions is how they try to dispel the idea that everyone hates each other and it’s a relentless competition; while I’m sure there are those factions they make a point of mentioning how supportive actresses can be. Monica Potter mentions that having successful women on TV “should be fun and celebrated” and Connie Britton reiterates this by saying that “It’s a lot more fun if you can share stories and make friends, and be in it together with people as opposed to if you isolate yourself.”

Several topics are covered including other audition woes (Kerry Washington talks about the lack of roles for women of color), social media, political involvement and if they contribute to the creative process of their character. One thing I would like to see with these roundtables is a change in some of the questions as I feel like the best advice/worst advice comes up every single time. The penultimate question is a fun one as they are asked if they could be on any show in history what would it be? I love that both Kate Mara and Elisabeth Moss geek out over My So-Called Life (and earlier Moss is very open about her love of Parenthood).

With any group discussion there are always some participants that are more vocal than the rest but at no point does it feel like one person is railroading the conversation. Elisabeth Moss comes across as very funny, something we don’t get to see that often on Mad Men and Connie Britton seems as wise as Tami Taylor. This is definitely a group of women I would like to go for drinks with.

Watch the whole interview below and head over to The Hollywood Reporter for behind the scenes photos of the group. The monochromatic styling of the cover is on trend and I much prefer this more casual approach they over last year’s gown affair. In unsurprising news I really want to find out the shades/brands of lipstick they are wearing (especially Elisabeth Moss’).

New “Bling Ring” Poster

29 May

Sofia Coppola’s new film The Bling Ring just premiered at the Cannes Film Festival which means it’s time for a new poster emblazoned with positive quotes and star ratings. It’s a blend of the promotional imagery that has been released so far; a shot of the group walking down the street (also the cover of the Nancy Jo Sales book – which I’ve just ordered) with a bold font on a bright yellow background. The shot of the group by themselves isn’t all that impressive but coupled with the text and color it stands out (though this teaser poster is still my favorite).

Bling RingThis is one of my most anticipated summer movies (along with The Way, Way, BackFrances Ha and The Kings of Summer) partly thanks to the director and also because of the subject matter. I find the notion of celebrity and how some people strive for it beyond anything else to be fascinating. Coppola has a tendency to focus on youth culture and while she only really scratches the surface of this theme it is one she has explored through various time periods. It might not go too deep into the why of it all, but one thing you can count on with Coppola is that the film will look stunning (sadly the incredible cinematographer Harris Savides died during production but his vision still permeates). The soundtrack will be on repeat all summer and beyond – both Virgin Suicides soundtracks are still on constant rotation more than ten years after the film was released. And hey lets relive the fashion of five years ago; dig out your biggest sunglasses.

Also this new Bling Ring poster gives me an excuse to post this now infamous clip from Pretty Wild (via The Soup) and it’s quite possibly my favorite reality show moment.
