Wear a TV Logo on Your Bag

30 Jan

Anna Gunn featured on the TV Ate My Wardrobe SAG Awards red carpet best dressed and she also carried our favorite accessory at this event – a custom Edie Parker Breaking Bad emblazoned clutch.

Anna Gunn Breaking Bad clutchThe trend has continued as Lena Dunham posted a picture to her Instagram showing off a Girls clutch from Charlotte Olympia. This is part of Olympia’s pre-Fall 2014 collection and will be available from April – there are also some pretty cool looking Archie clutches currently on sale.

Lena Dunham Girls ClutchThis opens up a whole new avenue of TV inspired clothing and there’s an endless list of TV show logos, past and present that would work just as well as these Girls and Breaking Bad offerings. I mean I have a Dunder Mifflin tote bag, but it’s not really the same thing.

Carrie BagThe first season of The Carrie Diaries starts with a nail polish disaster resulting in a one of a kind purse that lands Carrie Bradshaw an internship at Interview and while that bag is long gone on the show now; it’s still one of the defining images in the intro.

The Bell Jar Clutch

TV shows aren’t the only ones to get the clutch bag treatment as Parisian designer Olympia Le-Tan has been using classic book covers as clutch bag designs since the S/S 2010 ‘Don’t Judge a Book by its Cover‘ collection and I’ve been coveting one ever since. The Bell Jar is part of the ‘Still Ill‘ 2012 series and as it is my favorite book, it’s also top of my wish list.

A bag can easily become a blank canvas and TV is the latest place to inspire; how about a ’90s line featuring shows that have either just hit or will be reaching the 20 year milestone soon?

Zooey Deschanel’s Ready-to-wear Collection with Tommy Hilfiger

28 Jan

TV Ate My Wardrobe are huge fans of both Zooey Deschanel and her character Jess on New Girl’s style, so when we saw the news of the collaboration between Deschanel and Tommy Hilfiger (in the midst of a Felicity discussion with TAMW contributor Julie Hammerle) the questions of when, how much and what does the collection look like immediately sprung to mind. WWD has the answers and it won’t break the bank – unless you buy all 16 dresses – as the prices range from $98 to $199 and 14 of the 16 items will be on sale at Macy’s from April 14. The “To Tommy, From Zooey” line will land on tommy.com on April 21 and some stores will also include handbags and jewelry designed by Deschanel.

Zooey Deschanel THThe overall theme of the collection is vintage inspired with red, blue and white as the predominant color palette; mixing Mod with nautical and “it’s a new way to look at fun, American classics.” Whenever Deschanel discusses style inspiration in the plethora of magazine profiles vintage is the one constant factor and this collection has a whole ’60s vibe with the above shirt dress (this is my favorite of the looks released) really embodying this notion.

Sketch Zooey DeschanelPleats and prints are two dominant fabric and pattern themes with feminine and flirty looks featuring throughout; fit and flare is where it is at. This is part of the spring/summer ready-to-wear collection and it fits the “Tommy girl” aesthetic with a Deschanel twist. It pretty much has me longing for the end of this cold weather even though I’ll still be hankering for my tights with skirts this short.

Zooey Deschanel capsule collectionAt the Met Gala in May Zooey Deschanel attended wearing a seersucker gown by Hilfiger and while it didn’t really match the punk theme (but really most attendees missed the memo) it showed that Deschanel and Hilfiger were a style match in heaven. This is why this collaboration isn’t too much of a surprise and in terms of perception Deschanel’s twee styling has long been up for discussion and so she might as well get something positive out of it. In an InStyle interview last year she said “People are more affected by how I look and dress myself than I think anyone would care to admit” and so by producing a collection like this it might give detractors something to nod along to and say ‘of course,’ but fans of her style (like myself) will be cheering.

to tommy, from zooey sketchWhile none of the sketches or finished pieces that we have seen so far has included Peter Pan collars – Deschanel exclaimed in Glamour magazine last year “I want to be a fucking feminist and wear a fucking Peter Pan collar. So fucking what?” – I wouldn’t be surprised if a few sneak in. The word brand is kinda eye roll inducing and yet Deschanel is building her multimedia empire; actor, musician, producer, web entrepreneur and now designer. It’s worth repeating that this is a line that isn’t extravagantly priced and it also looks wearable. If only it would get a little warmer.

Love Triangles before Twitter: Felicity and the Ben vs. Noel Debate

7 Nov

Over at This Was TV I have recently started watching Felicity for the first time and going into the show this is pretty much all I knew:

  • Felicity went to college in New York City
  • It is J.J. Abrams first TV venture
  • Keri Russell cutting off all of her hair impacted the ratings (or something like that)
  • I would have strong Ben or Noel feelings

It’s the last point that I want to address because love triangles can be all consuming in terms of how the narrative plays out and with the discourse that surrounds a show. I’m only on episode 5 so it’s early doors and I don’t know who, if anyone Felicity ends up with (no spoilers please) but I want to discuss the impact of social media on storylines like these and how Scott Foley who is now part of a second love triangle compares his two experiences.

Felicity ep 1 Noel

Scott Foley has re-entered the fractious love triangle fray on Scandal and the social media involvement from those who work on Scandal as well as those who watch it is one of the most interactive and vocal. Some fans have made it clear to Foley that his presence is unwanted and he spoke to Vulture recently regarding the negative tweets that come his way and he’s taking it in his stride “Well, you have to see it as humorous. When they pop up, I read them. I click on the links. I share them with my wife and of course my wife wants to fucking kill everybody. For me, it shows that Scandal does something for people. It really resonates with them.” He follows on from this by mentioning the first huge love triangle he was a part of as “Felicity had sort of the same reaction, thankfully before the proliferation of social media.”

This somewhat intense experience Foley had when he was younger didn’t come with the current level of immediacy or dialogue with fans that can turn super nasty and that’s a good thing, as age can help with perspective. For the most part I think fans are generally cordial and understand that conflict can be good for the story, sadly some people go way to far all in the name of a character they feel they need to protect.

Turning away from Scandal (though I will say it’s an odd experience watching these two shows at the same time) and back to Felicity and while a love triangle asks you to pick a side, it helps if you can understand why the character at the center of it all would pick the other guy. So far with Felicity there are pros and cons for both Noel and Ben and I’m sure this will continue to evolve – or at least I hope it will otherwise it’s going to get boring pretty fast. I’m currently leaning one way (Noel) and I have a habit of going for the ‘good’ guy (not that Ben isn’t good so far, but he’s definitely meant to be the less safe choice). I will say that Ben has the smile thing down.

Felicity ep 1 BenWhat I really want for the character in the middle of it all is for the choice to make sense to the overall narrative. The love triangle should stay faithful to the characters that are in it, so if a decision is made between suitors, then the story will be able to back this up. Viewers will be unhappy if this is disingenuous or goes against what they have previously seen. If the choice isn’t the one that a viewer wants then they might rage against it, but if the moment is sold to them then they might come around. The key is to treat the audience with respect and then hopefully they will respect the resolution to this narrative device.  I can totally get behind the central love triangle as long as it doesn’t consume everything else. It also helps to have other pairings to root for on the peripheries (so far with Felicity it’s all about Julie and Brian Krakow from My So-Called Life, with Scandal David and Abby are my favorite couple).

So Ben vs. Noel? Scott Foley mentions in the Vulture interview that “I think toward the end, though, Team Ben was much more vocal in their support, right?” There were message boards and I’m sure if I delve into the TWoP Felicity forums there will be plenty of passionate arguments raging but the immediacy and ability to talk to the actors (unless you saw them on the street) wasn’t the same in 1998 as it is in 2013. It does sound like Scott Foley’s early experience with fervent Felicity fans has given him the right perspective he needs to deal with some of the less kind Scandal fans (though no one should be subjected to some of the really extreme tweets that are sent his way).

It’s funny because my version of watching Felicity is in the age of Twitter and I’ve already had several discussions about the Noel and Ben of it all, but it will never capture what it was like to be watching the show when it originally aired. Sites like Tumblr and Twitter do offer a glimpse and my own experience watching shows like Dawson’s Creek and seeing how people respond to love triangles on Scandal and The Vampire Diaries gives an insight into what it would have been like. Watching a show this long after it has aired gives a gentle impression, but if I head over to those forums I’m sure I will get a more accurate idea of what it was like.

The other thing to mention when it comes to a love triangle storyline is the person at the center of it and Foley mentions how the Ben and Noel choice wasn’t necessarily an obvious one “You didn’t know who was really “better” for her, and you were happy with whoever she chose. You just wanted Felicity to be okay.” I’m going to leave it with that sentiment because I think that’s what lies at the heart of any of these X vs. Y debates; it’s the character in the middle that plays the most important role in all of this.

Happy TV New Year and Turning Another Year Older

3 Sep

September feels like the start of a new year and for TV it is as the fall season is about to begin. September is the month that I associate with new beginnings – it was always when the academic year started and even though my post-grad finished several years ago I’m still very much in that mindset. Do you know how much I want to go out and get new stationary even though I don’t need it?! Fashion is another industry that holds this month in high regard as the September issue of magazines marks the biggest publication of the year (yes they hit newsstands in August, but there’s no mention of that summer month in the title)  and New York Fashion Week kicks off on Thursday.

The photos dotted throughout are the characters who I often ask “What Would ______ Do?” This selection of inspiring female characters will provide life lessons, fix things, teach me how to wear white without spilling, organize Galentine’s Day, support me with my cheese habit and show me how to wear ’90s fashion all over again.

Leslie Knope

There’s a personal reason why September always feels like the perfect time to reassess and look to the new as it also happens to be when my birthday is (yeah I’m making this all about me). It’s time to finally accept that I am no longer a twentysomething and that I am too old to be a Millennial and too young to be Gen X; where are all the think pieces about the generation in the middle and how we ruined everything? I want my Time magazine cover.

While I’m experiencing the standard apprehension about where I am and what I am doing I also wanted to take the moment to write this perhaps overly emotive post (hey it’s the internet what else am I meant to do?) to see that I am actually doing fine.

TV Ate My Wardrobe has been in existence in this form for almost 5 months and when I started it I had some idea of what I wanted it to be – a place to talk about TV, costuming and fashion. There are so many incredible outlets that feature terrific writing about TV and it’s such a competitive market it can be tough to break through and carve a corner of one’s own. While I still have far to go before I can hail this venture a success, it’s been a personal triumph as my confidence has grown. Of course there are days when I think it’s all pointless but then a new idea will strike and it all seems worth it again. Or I’ll find out that one of my Scandal costuming picks is actually something that has been used in the forthcoming season (*spoiler* it’s the white Burberry trench).

MSCL ep7 The Smile

A lot of thanks has to be given to the many new friends I have made in the TV and writing community on Twitter and for the opportunities this has given me. Without This Was TV I wouldn’t be able to relive my sometimes embarrassing teen years while talking about My So-Called Life and Freaks and Geeks. This is soon to include the sometimes awkward university years as Julie Hammerle and I will be moving onto Felicity later this month. It turns out conversation pieces are a lot of fun and here I will be continuing the Summer Rewind project (even if it’s pretty much autumn) with Kerensa Cadenas and we will be joined by Julie to talk all things Scandal before the new season begins.

Olivia PopeWarning this is where I get even more sentimental as I want to say thanks to everyone who has been reading; whether it is one article or if you visit on a regular basis it has made this experience more worthwhile. There is one person who encourages me on a daily basis even when I starting doubting the words I write and they get a huge thank you and this support means everything.

For the final word I will leave you with Nick Miller and I can’t wait to start writing about New Girl again when the new season returns. Here he is with a notion that I am going to try and listen to as I turn another year older.

Throwback Thursday: Makeup Edition

29 Aug

Having been a teenager in the ’90s I have many terrible makeup related stories that mostly feature ill advised blue mascara/sparkly eye shadow combinations and because I messed up my eyes so much I always feared doing the same with my lip color. This meant that I avoided lipstick and instead briefly embraced the concealer as lipstick trend (also terrible). Luckily I have a chance to rectify the mistakes of my youth as everything that was hot in the ’90s is back for another go and hopefully this time around I will get it right. I might leave the daisies behind even if Drew makes them look so enticing.

Drew Barrymore daisyMAC recently announced they were bringing back some lipsticks and eye shadows from the decade that had us reaching for plaid flannel shirts, crop tops, mini kilts, pop socks, slip dresses and chokers. Brands with discontinued colors aren’t the only ones getting in on this wave of ’90s nostalgia and Nars, a company that produced its first campaign with 12 lipsticks in 1994 has a color that perfectly represents this period and it’s called “413 BLKR.”

Nars BLKRThe name comes from the location of Nars’ first flagship store in New York City’s West Village. The deep rose brown pretty much embodies the red carpet makeup look of stars like Drew Barrymore and Winona Ryder. Pairing with super smoky eyes defies the bold lips and eyes rule but things were a messier in 1994. Now you can take a cue from the Michelle Williams Louis Vuitton campaign that pairs a strong brow with the dark lips. It’s dramatic without looking like you’re going to a ’90s themed party.

Winona RyderThis is perfect timing for the Reality Bites TV show because apparently people have run out of ideas and nothing can be left alone. If we’re going to pick over the carcass of all music, movies and TV shows from the 90s I’d quite like to see The Craft on the small screen (yes I know The Secret Circle only last one season).

Fairuza-Balk-in-the-Craft-This is mostly so I can see the return of Fairuza Balk, who I find terrifying and mesmerizing in equal measures.

No More Leslie and Ann Dance Parties on Parks and Recreation

1 Aug

They haven’t moved to the town from Footloose, instead Buzzfeed broke the news yesterday that Rashida Jones and Rob Lowe are leaving Parks and Recreation. This double exit will take place after the 13th episode of the forthcoming sixth season. Reaction to this was mixed (well at least on my Twitter feed it was) ranging from cries of “Nooooooooo,” a repeated use of the word LITERALLY and others suggesting it will rejuvenate the show. I stand somewhere in the middle as both performers are fantastic to watch but in a show that can feel crowded at times, they get the short shrift in character development and plot.  After spotting an old ad for the Rob Lowe show Lyon’s Den I had a conversation with fellow This Was TV colleague Noel Kirkpatrick yesterday afternoon, this was before the news broke and we discussed Lowe’s role in an ensemble after his previous exit from The West Wing. A complete coincidence of course, or we might have jinxed it.

Rob Lowe Rashida Jones Parks and Recreation

Chris and Ann have both suffered on the show with how their characters sometimes fit in to the overall narrative; Ann has often just been there as “the girlfriend” (which they seemed to acknowledge with the whole dating herself storyline last season) and Chris has a lot of funny quirks but not much else (his therapy sessions attempted to broaden his character). Quite often they are there to service other characters and while they are both funny they have a habit of getting lost in the ensemble in terms of development beyond jokes. This is clear in how they both provide important stability in their friendships to both Leslie and Ben. The Leslie/Ann dynamic is one of my favorites on the show and great female friendships can be hard to find on TV. I’m sure Leslie will be supportive of Ann’s decision, however I don’t think we can rule out a plan to sabotage Ann’s Pawnee exit. The projected leaving date is around February and could tie in with one last epic Galantine’s Day.

It’s too early to speculate exactly how they will leave, but their story is currently tied together as Ann and Chris are trying to have a baby together. Rashida Jones has a deal with her Jesse and Celeste Forever writing partner Will McCormack for Warner Bros. Television and this movie was a highlight last year, so I am excited for what they will produce next. This could be better suited to Jones’ talents and a show where she gets to be the star is something I am very much for. Rob Lowe has been involved in other projects recently including Behind the Candelabra and the upcoming Killing Kennedy. If this means we can get a Dr Startz spinoff then it will make it all worth it (hey I can dream).

Here is the Leslie/Ann dance party scene from last season that is one of my favorites, I’m sure they will squeeze in a lot more in the next 13 episodes.

Teen Hair Confessions & the New Michelle Williams Louis Vuitton Campaign

25 Jul

TV Ate My Wardrobe likes to explore how costuming and styling from TV shows can be a source of inspiration and here’s the tale of how one character had a big influence on a huge hair decision I made; when Jen Lindley from Dawson’s Creek got a drastic shorter style so did I. That’s right I went from long to short hair at the age of 16 because of a TV show. Luckily it turns out that I’m one of those people that looks better with short hair and it wasn’t the disaster it could be (the story of my earlier super shot blunt bangs is a horrorshow, thanks to teenage stupidity rather than Jen Lindley).

This anecdote leads me to Michelle Williams’ new stunning Louis Vuitton campaign that will feature in the many September issues of fashion magazines next month and while Williams has perfected the short ‘do since her time on The WB, the strong eyebrow/brick red lip combination has a distinct ’90s influence.

Michelle Williams Louis Vuitton AW 13The ’90s revival is in full swing as the nostalgia dial is set to high as everything that happened in this decade becomes new again; this includes TV show reboots, movies that are celebrating their 18th anniversary (hello Clueless) and makeup revivals from brands like MAC, even the political sex scandals sound like something from the 90s with a technological twist. This is enough to instantly make anyone in their late 20s/early 30s feel the weight of time and thanks to the recent My So-Called Life and Freaks and Geeks discussions that I have been taking part in for This Was TV with Julie Hammerle I’m pretty sure I’ve past the threshold of embarrassing teen stories (soon there will be embarrassing university stories when we tackle Felicity in the fall – another show that has a defining hair moment).

For all the fashion mistakes we make as teens (and as adults) it’s a learning process that we all go through, the short hair that Williams had as Jen Lindley is nowhere near as polished as the pixie cut that Williams is famous for now (hey stars they’re just like us) and this new campaign shows Michelle Williams rocking updated 90s grunge makeup (albeit while holding the very non-grunge but beautiful new Louis Vuitton bag).

This campaign is not only stunning but it also reminds me that thanks to Jen Lindley back in 1999 I made the best hair decision and went short.

What do you think of the new campaign?

Any teenage style choices you made thanks to a TV show that you are thankful for or regret?

“The Conversation” and Busy Philipps on Body Image

24 Jul

It’s hard to escape the wall-to-wall news coverage surrounding the birth of the Royal baby and while this isn’t going to descend into an article about how the polka dot dress that Kate Middleton wore to unveil her son didn’t hide her post-labor bump, it has reminded me of an interview that Busy Philipps gave on the web series The Conversation a couple of months ago.

The Conversation is hosted by Amanda de Cadenet and the mission of this series and their website is “to explore, nurture and empower the modern woman, through interviews and topics ranging from: health and wellness, beauty, style, fitness, diet, parenting, sex, love, truth and wisdom, career and finance.” The interview with Busy Philipps is one that is particularly relevant this week as it highlights the unnatural expectations that are being heaped on women both famous and non-famous with the obsession that has grown regarding body image and post-pregnancy weight loss.

You don’t have to go far to see headlines about Kate Middleton’s “mummy tummy” with the same site posting photos of Busy Philipps (who recently gave birth to her second child) stating that she’s “embracing her new curves” and is in “no rush to slim down.” These comments might not appear to be all that venomous but there is an inherent value judgement, particularly as tabloids love to do “My Body after Baby” spreads – something that Philipps mentions in her Conversation episode.

It’s not just post-pregnancy ideals that Philipps discusses as she also talks about a time in her mid-20s when she was asked to lose weight for a pilot and how body image could be considered the “last frontier of feminism.” In a recent behind the scenes look at how The Conversation is made de Cadenet explains that this series believes it is “important to be honest because otherwise we are comparing ourselves to unrealistic lives.” This topic is covered in the Busy Philipps edition and it is important to untangle ourselves from these unrealistic expectations that some publications peddle to us on a daily basis.

There is a reason why the Freaks and Geeks episode “Kim Kelly is my Friend” is one of my favorite episodes of TV and a lot of that is to do with Busy Philipps’ performance; the candid nature of this character is something that appears to be shared with the person who plays Kim.

MAC ’90s Makeup Revival: Be Your Own Angela Chase

11 Jul

It’s hard to escape from ’90s nostalgia whether in countless lists on BuzzFeed or projects like the Boy Meets World spinoff Girl Meets World. While I can still pretend that The X-Files didn’t debut 20 years ago and still get excited about the forthcoming reunion panel at Comic Con and ignore crop tops despite them being in every shop at the moment; one thing I am glad to see is the return of some discontinued MAC products.

MAC_By_Request

MAC by Request is back and it features six lipstick shades and five eye shadows from the ’90s that are no longer available; now is your chance to change that. You can vote between now and July 21 on the MAC Facebook page for the products you would like to see return (one ballot per product category each day) and the top three lipsticks and eye shadows will be on sale this winter.

With smokey eye colors such as Ashbury and the muted peachy-pink Flavour lipstick (second from the right in the picture above) you can perfect your 90s grunge look and because I thought wearing blue mascara was my only makeup choice I’m glad that this revival will give me a chance to rectify that. MAC was a product that existed in magazines and not in real life when I was a teenager and as you can tell from my blue mascara remark I definitely wasn’t an expert (not that I am now either).

Flavour is from the 1994 Freedom Colour Additions collection and is a muted tone that looks like something My So-Called Life’s Angela would choose – Angela rarely strayed from neutral tones except for in the pilot and when she was angry at Rayanne for sleeping with Jordan – which is probably why it stands out to me. There are bold colors among the nearly nude ones if you fancy something a bit more Cher from Clueless with Glam (far left) and Pink Poodle (far right).

What discontinued MAC product do you want to see in your makeup bag?

Bitchy Resting Face, Hostile Listening Face and How to Make it in America

4 Jul

Bitchy resting face has gone from hilarious fake PSA to a segment on The Today Show with Taylor Orci, the creator of the original video appearing to discuss the huge response to this video. I’m pretty sure that we have all at one point or another been told to smile or cheer up when the situation hasn’t required such helpful advice and this is probably why so many people can relate to this video. The Today Show goes so far as consult a plastic surgeon to discuss what you can do to rectify this problem (because of course it does) and there is a procedure called a “grin lift” which is “used to turn a permanent frown upside down.” Yep, that is indeed a real thing that you can have done.

This instantly reminded me of a scene in season 2 of How to Make it in America – which I have just watched for the first time – when Rachel is told by her boss that she has a hostile listening face. This was something that I hadn’t heard of before but my boyfriend immediately turned and looked at me with a knowing look on his face suggesting that this is something that I do. Here is Lake Bell in How to Make it in America demonstrating the twin of bitchy resting face with her hostile listening face.

how to make it in America hostile listening faceTabloid journalism has been playing photo assumption with people’s faces for a long time (just click on The Daily Mail’s sidebar of shame to see countless examples – “Michelle Williams looks sad walking her dog alone! Is she still heartbroken?”). As discussed on The Today Show video Anna Paquin talks about her own bitchy resting face on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and that she tends to look angry in paparazzi photos (though I wouldn’t blame her if she did look mad at them trying to take pictures of her twin babies).

It’s hard to talk about any kind of bitchface without mentioning the undisputed champion of every type of bitchface and that is Mad Men’s Pete Campbell (who goes way beyond the corresponding asshole face, resting or otherwise) and this supercut of Pete’s biggest outbursts shows why he deserves this particular honor.
