Out of the Box: Look of the Week

24 May

As a lot of the shows have ended for the season and the summer ones are yet to begin this edition of “Look of the Week” will include a variety of appearances including Mad Men (standard), a late night talk show and a music video. There are no real rules to this weekly feature and as always it is a snapshot of what I have been watching (and looking at online) and each pick is for a variety of reasons including; what it adds to the storyline, what it tells us about the characters involved or simply because it looks good.

Winner: Stan Rizzo on Mad Men “The Crash”

MM_608_JA_0212_0554This is the second time that Stan has featured on this list (and I’d include him every week if I could) and it’s partly because of his fantastic beard (for all your Stan beard needs check out this wonderful Tumblr). Mad Men was pretty divisive this week as half of the office received an “energy boosting” injection from a doctor and it resulted in the most overt drug episode that this show has done so far. Stan is pretty much always on drugs and he revealed why his uptake has increased this season – his cousin who we met at Don’s birthday party last season was killed in Vietnam. Stan also featured in some moments of levity, including the race above (and he’s looking pretty athletic leaping over the table) and his attempt at becoming William Tell (or most likely a nod to this Esquire cover).

It led to his encounter with Peggy (Mad Men isn’t necessarily a shipping show but I’m all about these two getting together). Stan didn’t hook up with Peggy as she told him not to use sex and drugs to mask the pain, advice he didn’t take. Peggy told Stan that “You’re lucky I don’t like beards” and I’m pretty sure half the audience (myself included) yelled at their screen. Their conversation ends flirtatiously with Stan telling Peggy that she has “a great ass” and a thousand fanfics were created from this moment (coming soon to a Kindle near you?).

Runner Up: Elisabeth Moss on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon

Moss and FallonYou can tell that Mad Men has just finished shooting because Elisabeth Moss has ditched both her Peggy Olson brunette color and length, opting for a short and choppy blonde look instead. It’s a drastic change, but it really suits Moss and I’m sure it is a welcome relief after filming a season of Mad Men. Moss had it cut backstage before her appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday and as I mentioned last week I am a fan of chopping all your hair off (as Mindy did in the season finale) and it instantly changes your appearance. Peggy is a character who dresses from a functional point of view, we’ll never see her in the more fashion forward pieces that Megan wears and she is often dressing as someone who needs to show she has authority in the office. This is a complete shift for Moss and it instantly makes her look more vibrant and youthful than the character we see her play.

Runner Up: Zooey Deschanel in the She & Him video “I Could’ve Been Your Girl”

She & Him videoI wrote about this Zooey Deschanel directed She & Him video earlier this week and the 60s inspired styling. The reason why I wanted to talk about it again is thanks to Deschanel’s footwear. Yellow is very much on trend this season and my favourite pair of yellow flats (that feature on my Twitter background) are about to fall apart as I’ve worn them so much, I’m basically going to be on the lookout for the perfect pair and these ones fit the bill. They work well with the hot pink dress/blue petticoat ensemble and the theme of the video. It counters the bored looking Deschanel who is in black and white stripes at the end of the video. This video and styling will draw equal amounts of eye rolls and praise depending on how you feel about Deschanel. No need to ask which camp I fall into.

Who would be your look of the week?

New Girl’s New She & Him Video

21 May

New Girl might be over until the fall but Zooey Deschanel is going to have a busy summer with her band She & Him. Their fourth album “Volume Three” came out a couple of weeks ago and now they have released their first video from this record; it’s as bright and delightful as you would expect. The video for “I Could’ve Been Your Girl” premiered on Deschanel’s website HelloGiggles this morning and Deschanel also directed this 60s inspired affair.

The new She & Him album shows a new level of maturity while remaining whimsical and it’s perfect for those sunny days. Some might find it a tad too saccharine, but regular readers will know that TV Ate My Wardrobe are big fans of Zooey Deschanel’s work and style (I’m keeping my eye out for a new pair of yellow shoes so the ones she is wearing in this video are perfect). Plus M. Ward does a great job of playing the grumpy star of the piece.

Oh and if anyone is keeping score of the all important bangs situation, they are less block and more side sweep (I know all the jargon). The only thing this video is missing is Nick Miller dancing.

New Girl Season 2 Finale: Making a Choice

15 May

“Where did we come from? Where do we go?”

Life’s big question as perfectly as asked by the song “Cotton-Eye Joe” (and yes I’m having some serious high school dance flashbacks) and one that ended season 2 of New Girl on a high as it rounded out a fantastic year. The strength of the finale and the show is not just about the Nick and Jess pairing, but the group as a whole and this episode highlights why New Girl is so much fun to watch. It’s chaotic and messy but as Jess told a class of kids last week the “messy parts are the best parts.”

NG_ep225_sc1_0074Since “Cooler” there has been a lot of tiptoeing around how Nick and Jess really feel about each other; they are friends and there is a strong sexual attraction. Beyond that they have had problems verbalizing their feelings and after Bob’s disapproving speech last week this put the emphasis on Nick’s lack of self-worth. This is emphasized in the finale when Jess first mentions that her father has referred to Nick as a child. Jess claims that she doesn’t believe this, but then uses this word when she mistakenly thinks that Nick is part of the wedding “sabo” scheme. To prove Jess right Nick joins the terrible badger in the air duct plan, cue the best high pitched screaming you’ve ever heard coming from Nick as Bucky the Badger escapes. Also the badger is not rabid, he’s “just kind of a dick.”

Since an air duct is as good as place as any to have a heart to heart this is the location of one of several Nick and Jess relationship discussions. With each conversation as the episode progresses Nick pushes Jess further and further away; here he gets her to admit that there is a small part of her that thinks that what has occurred between them is a mistake. Jess admits that yes there is and this triggers Nick’s self destruct button, even if it is natural for someone to have doubts about a big change in a personal relationship like this one. This talk is abruptly cut short thanks to the air ducts giving way and they crash directly into the wedding ceremony. A shake of the head from Bob in Nick’s direction is the final straw and Nick thinks they should call it.

NG_ep225-sc5_09C4218Zooey Deschanel and Jake Johnson produce some of their strongest work in these emotional scenes, first as Jess tries to stop the tears from flowing as she agrees to call it. Both look devastated and don’t want to go through with it, but Nick and Jess have a habit of not saying the thing that they really want to say. We have seen this repeatedly this season, particularly in the incident with Russell and writing down what they mean to each other and then refusing to say. That was the last time they decided to call it and those middle school dance rules didn’t last for long.

The final scene is a romantic comedy at its best and once again both Deschanel and Johnson nail the emotion of the scene; it’s teary (“Before you say no, don’t say no”), super hot ( another all caps KISS) and funny. The laugh that breaks up the kiss is the opposite of the yelling make out session from “Quick Hardening Caulk” and mirrors the post-coital reaction at the end of “Virgins.” As I’ve mentioned previously the friends first aspect is really important with Nick and Jess; it’s refreshing to see an onscreen couple sharing moments like this as love doesn’t have to be tortured and deep all the time, sometimes it can be funny too.

A choice is made then, but not one that is clearly defined and I am happy with this decision by the New Girl writers. Nick and Jess don’t know where they are driving off to, but they are doing it together. One aspect that was surprising is how not bothered Winston and Schmidt are by this romantic development. I guess we have had their attempt at sabotage that ended badly, but showed Winston and Schmidt they have their own bond. Schmidt is disgruntled at Nick, but only because Nick is changing aspects about himself and not helping with the “sabo” plan (and yes Jess’ pink purse goes well with Nick’s suit). Winston is the person that pushes Nick into not taking the running away option, while he is slightly delirious from blood loss and Winston gets the best line of the episode – “Hey bartender! Can you call an ambulance? I’m about to bleed out. Thanks man!”

From this episode it would appear that in terms of the group the loft dynamic might not change all that much. Obviously the sleeping arrangements will be different and how Nick and Jess interact, but as a group they seem pretty solid. One point that has been repeated this season is that Winston is weird at pranks as he goes in way too hard or way too soft. There has also been a strong Winston/Schmidt bond of late and this showed in their teaming up together. Schmidt also had the opportunity to flash his most devious smile and there are some nice moments between Schmidt and Jess (“Was I?”), yes he does deserve to have his precious hair messed up bad.

NG_ep225-sc2_09C4865Schmidt claims that he is trying to ruin the wedding as a friend and it turns out that he did read the look on Cece’s face correctly. The problem of course is that Schmidt is with Elizabeth and they’ve got a good thing going. In a refreshing change from blaming “the other woman” Cece and Elizabeth are fine with each other and look to Schmidt to make a decision. When they don’t go for his listening to a Coldplay bootleg suggestion he goes for the Nick Miller running away option. Before we met Elizabeth I would have said Cece all the way, but Merritt Wever is such a good addition to the cast and what she brings out in Schmidt. It’s a hard choice and I can see why they went with no choice, plus it’s a season finale so you need to have some unresolved conundrums.

The wedding doesn’t go ahead and Shivrang isn’t heartbroken all thanks to guest star Taylor Swift. Swift plays Elaine, Shivrang’s true love and her appearance wasn’t the distraction I thought it could be. There’s also a pretty funny joke about their height difference and how she’s been writing in her journal and painting pictures of Shivrang on her easel.

Overall this was a really satisfying conclusion to this season and showcased all of New Girl’s strengths from how they have handled the “will they/won’t they” to the top notch physical comedy moments (Vulture has an excellent compilation from this season), all while focusing on the overall group dynamic. This finale could have felt overstuffed, but thanks to the pacing and balance between all the different storylines it topped off a fantastic year for New Girl.

New Girl and The Mindy Project: Season Finales and Fox Upfront Presentation

14 May

The Fox Upfront Presentation took place in New York yesterday and Fox introduced what new shows they will be airing next season – robots, National Treasure style mysteries, a Gavin & Stacy remake, a cop comedy and more. It is also a time when they bring out cast members of current shows. As it is the New Girl and The Mindy Project’s season finales tonight and because they both look adorable I wanted to share this delightful photo of Zooey Deschanel with Mindy Kaling that Deschanel posted to her Instagram yesterday.

Zooey Deschanel Mindy Kaling upfrontsBoth New Girl and The Mindy Project will remain on Tuesday night in the fall with new comedy shows Dads (I made it half way through the trailer, that laugh track is just the worst) and Brooklyn Nine-Nine (this is much more promising and is from the producers of Parks and Rec). As both New Girl and The Mindy Project have demonstrated comedy shows can take time to find their feet and so I am hopeful for at least one of these new offerings.

New Girl has also been given the much coveted post Super Bowl slot along with one of the freshman comedies (DadsBrooklyn Nine-Nine or Enlisted) and this can lead to a big ratings bump and high exposure.

NewGirl-Ep255_ElaineBigDay-Sc25_00304The big question for New Girl tonight is what will happen with Nick and Jess? Is Nick going to let his doubts about his self-worth get the better of him? Cece’s wedding is center stage and she has her own romantic entanglements with Schmidt to deal with. Plus Taylor Swift is turning up, possibly in an attempt to ruin the wedding. It’s all happening.

The Mindy Project is still figuring out what works and while there was a point around mid-season that I considered quitting this show, I’m glad I stuck around as the second half has been much stronger. This has a lot to do with the central pairing of Mindy and Danny (and not just because Chris Messina is dreamy). I don’t need to see them hooking up any time soon as their dynamic is interesting without these kinds of complications, but it’s good to know that when the inevitable happens they have built up their relationship from antagonists to friends (one shining moment from Danny is with the vending machine after Seth Rogen’s character left).

Over at The A.V. Club Todd VanDerWerff has an interesting proposal for how season 2 can improve using the model of Louie; reduce the ensemble size and focus on the lead. Mindy and Danny are the only two fully formed characters and sometimes aspects of the larger group don’t gel (and the show has already rejigged the cast). I am glad that despite less than stellar ratings The Mindy Project will return in the fall and hopefully produce more of what made the latter half of the season so enjoyable.

TV’s Women of Comedy Shine at the 2013 Met Gala

7 May

Last night the 2013 Met Gala was held in New York City at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and while all eyes were on what Beyonce, Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow were wearing, here at TV Ate My Wardrobe we want to highlight what the women of television were wearing. Actresses from both comedy and drama were at the event and as this is meant to be fun night of outlandish and creative fashion we’re going to focus on the women of comedy.

The theme of the night was “Punk” as the Costume of Institute Gala celebrates the opening of Punk: Chaos to Couture; an exhibition examining the impact that punk has had on high fashion from the 1970s to the present day.

It’s a broad theme and as you will see from the variety of outfits and some took this to mean dramatic make-up, whereas others like Miley Cyrus embraced the punk look from head to toe.

Lena-Dunham-Met-Gala-2013Girls creator and star Lena Dunham arrived at the event in Erdem and with designer Erdem Moralioglu in a black floor length gown with a polka dot (!) mesh panel. This panel meant that you could see Dunham’s back tattoo and worked well with the punk theme. The combination of the floral print on the dress and the polka dot is pattern clashing at its best and this is my favorite red carpet look of the night. Both her make-up and hair are simple, opting for smokey eyes that were a bang on trend at the Gala (darker make-up equals punk in the fashion world).

Aubrey Plaza metAubrey Plaza has featured several times on TV Ate My Wardrobe’s “Look of the Week” list for her April Ludgate costumes that I covert and while this outfit isn’t something you would see on Parks and Recreation, it is also one of my favorite ensembles of the evening. Plaza was dressed by Vogue magazine in a Marios Schwab dress with Barbara Bui heels. A dress with a built in cape satisfies my inner superhero and one that sparkles as much as this does is an instant hit.

Zooey Deschanel Met Zooey Deschanel’s one shouldered Tommy Hilfiger might not automatically suggest anything remotely punk, but her clutch purse featuring an image of a safety pin in hot pink adds a slight punk edge to this classic look. Deschanel doesn’t go for the heavy make-up approach and she’s also ditched her famous bangs for the evening giving a fresh face appeal. Like many others on this red carpet Deschanel hasn’t fully embraced the theme, but the New Girl star looks elegant with a dash of punk with her purse.

mindy and BJMindy Kaling (seen above with Mindy Project/The Office co-star B.J. Novak) joked to Popsugar TV that she was the “antitheses of punk” as she couldn’t stop smiling on the red carpet. Kaling also claims that the most punk thing she did when she was growing up was to stay up late to watch Saturday Night Live. This early foray into television comedy has certainly paid off as after a rocky start, The Mindy Project has found its feet and is my favorite new comedy of the year (though sadly it doesn’t have much competition). Kaling embraced the smokey eyes and photos on her Twitter page reveal a close look at her hair and make-up (bonus sparkles). Bold lips and eyes can be hard to pull off, but Kaling does just this. There were a lot of updos but Kaling rocks a textured hair down approach which goes with the make-up and dress choice (you can follow Kylee Heath who did Kaling’s hair on Twitter).

Taylor Swift MetThis last addition is cheating a little, but as Taylor Swift is appearing on the New Girl season finale next week her inclusion doesn’t feel too outlandish. Plus she looks really great and different from the usual sweet Taylor that we see on the red carpet. Wearing a black J. Mendel gown with mesh cutouts, Swift is one of the starlets that looks more punk than her usual appearance. This is another example of heavy eyeliner and dark eyeshadow, which was rather ubiquitous at the Gala and it strikes a nice balance with the soft pink lip color. Like Kaling, Swift has gone for ruffled hair and she’s also added a subtle dash of pink to her blond locks.

New Girl and How to Handle a ‘Will They/Won’t They’

1 May

A ‘will they/won’t they’ relationship is tricky for any TV show to navigate but New Girl is showing how it can be done and last night’s episode hit another important milestone for Nick and Jess. In “Virgins” the group revealed embarrassing (and not so embarrassing) tales of how they lost their virginity and this led to another first time. With just two episodes the tension and stakes have increased as Nick and Jess will have to navigate what this means for their relationship.

Nick and JessThe second half of this season has taken this coupling to a new level that started with a super hot kiss and led to non-declarations of feelings, a shouty make-out session, a first date that was three terrible first dates and lots of lingering looks. Finally Nick listened to his father (shout out to Dennis Farina making a return from the grave in the flashbacks) and what he told him the night Walt had gifted Winston and Nick prostitutes; “I just want to make sure that you don’t miss out on the things in life that are happening when you’re not thinking, because believe you me, those are the best things in life.” Sound advice from Walt Miller and Nick hasn’t always followed this course of thinking, he was after all the guy who was afraid to run into the ocean in season 1 (“Injured” is still one of my favorite episodes). In fact a lot of this season has been about these characters doing things that they previously wouldn’t attempt and this evolution is one compelling aspect of New Girl.

So, ‘will they/won’t they’ couples can be a hard line to walk; you get them together too early and it might mess up the tension, you get them together too late and it feels stale. The way the Nick and Jess relationship has developed from the beginning of the show and particularly this season has felt organic. Last year there was flirtation and chemistry that made it clear that something would happen eventually, but both characters have had a series of serious and casual love interests, and this hasn’t felt out of place either. When the focus shifted this season after The Kiss (capitals definitely required) this was also part of the natural progression. Cece pointed out in the last episode that it was all getting a tad farcical and 7th grade and if it had continued in this manner then the audience might get just as frustrated. Thankfully the next step has been taken and after an episode discussing having sex for the first time, Nick and Jess did with each other.

ng_scn20_022

This moment was part of a longer sequence involving everyone else; Schmidt and Elizabeth, Cece and Shivrang, Winston and Daisy. Schmidt has recently got back in touch with his first college girlfriend Elizabeth and the flashback showing their first time was one of the funniest bits of physical comedy that New Girl has produced with Nick and Schmidt rolling around on the floor after too much lube was used (see above). I’d really like to see Merritt Wever’s Elizabeth stick around as she brings out a different side of Schmidt and because she’s so, so good. This will also add something extra to the other ‘will they/won’t they’ of New Girl with Cece and Schmidt turning it into a love quadrangle of sorts. Cece and Shivrang discuss having sex before their wedding (which is in two days) and Cece says they shouldn’t, they both look away awkwardly and this doesn’t bode well for this union. Winston’s performance anxiety troubles with Daisy are soothed when he sees Titanic on the TV, the movie that he’d been watching with Nick just before he (unknowingly) lost his virginity to a hooker.

Back to Nick and Jess and the moment over the closing credits was played extremely well by Zooey Deschanel and Jake Johnson with 30 seconds of post sex reactions including wide eyes, huge smiles, laughter and the best use of “Ruh-roh.” Rather than opt for the standard romcom cliché of “What next?” it just ended on a Scooby-Doo reference and “Oh boy” (I always read this as a shout out to Quantum Leap). It’s both awkward and comfortable and I hope they play the rest of the season like this.

So what next (I am a romcom cliché)? New Girl creator Liz Meriwether spoke to E!Online and said “Going forward, we were just interested in what does the sex mean to both of them and how does it deepen and complicate the issues that they have between them. I think that’s what the end of the season is about.” A line has been crossed and because they live together it’s going to change the dynamic in the loft. Everything is pretty much out in the open prior to this and Schmidt and Winston have previously thought a Nick/Jess romantic relationship wouldn’t work. Schmidt’s going to be preoccupied with Cece’s wedding as he tries to come up with a scheme to ruin the big day (with Winston’s help) and so this might give them some space to figure stuff out. Or not as Jess’ dad (guest star Rob Reiner) will make a surprise visit.

New Girl has a 25-episode run this year and I’m glad they got an extra episode to play with. This has been one of the consistently funny sitcoms this season and they manage to balance emotional arcs around set pieces that include a giant jar of lube; an impressive achievement from Liz Meriwether and the whole creative New Girl team.

Nick, Jess and Style Evolution on New Girl

15 Apr

In a recent interview with InStyle magazine New Girl star Zooey Deschanel declared that “People are more affected by how I look and dress myself than I think anyone would care to admit.” Image and how someone is perceived is a construction of many things and in this discussion Deschanel talks about her career progression from being seen as “tough, sardonic, deadpan” in films such as The Good Girl and this changing to “adorable.” Along came New Girl and this evolved into “adorkable” and this tag has been hard to shake thanks to it being used in the marketing of the show. For Deschanel detractors it gives the perfect excuse to talk about the maturity level of her character, but the show and Jess have come a long way from not being able to say the word penis at the start of season one. While a lot of this has been driven by the story, there has also been a subtle shift in some of the costume choices when it comes to Jess.

The bright, bold hues are still on display and there is a girlish quality to a lot of what Jess wears. The dresses are still vintage looking in design and the waist-cinching look is a Jess staple. There have also been plenty of whimsical prints, stripes and a lot of polka dots that also featured in season one, but hemlines have shrunk on certain outfits and the high waisted shorts that Jess loves (and both Nick and Schmidt have raised separate issues with) have made more appearances this year. New Girl’s costume designer Deb McGuire spoke to Entertainment Weekly about this new look for Jess saying “the sexier costumes are due to the storyline, there seems to be more sensuality and sexuality going on.”

NG_ep221-sc8_09C3769Jess has become more confident with her sexuality this season; first there was what started as a casual fling with Sam and now they are exploring the dynamic between Jess and Nick. The chemistry between this pair has been apparent since the start of the show but the writers have wisely allowed their friendship to grow so there is a sexual attraction coupled with emotional depth. So far there has been several hot hook-ups (the first kiss set my twitter feed alight), but now they are at a point where neither character is making a move or expressing how they really feel. Cece called Jess out saying that for two single adults they’re both regressing to 7th grade relationship antics (Jess has also implemented middle school dance rules).

This might be considered as the show taking a step back in terms of character growth as both Nick and Jess have progressed this season, but structurally this emotional obstacle feels necessary to build towards the season finale. Cece’s big truth bomb also helped deflect some of the attention off her own relationship fears with her upcoming nuptials. The big two romantic dilemmas for the finale are “Will Cece go through with the wedding?” and “Will Nick and Jess admit how they really feel?” Aside from general sitcom conventions that would suggest the answers are “no” and “yes” I’d say that both of these propositions don’t have a clear answer. Whereas last season it seemed clear that Nick wouldn’t move in with Caroline and so the stakes in that finale weren’t high.

NG_222-38_0104

Jess isn’t the only one who has had a slight wardrobe update and Nick Miller has been more than just hoodie this season (ok he’s still worn a lot of hoodies this year). In an attempt to impress Jess on their first date, Nick let Schmidt dress him for the occasion. The desire to dress up could be a reaction to what Jess said in “The Cooler” that “Some basic grooming, Nick, and you’d be smoking hot.” The above photo is proof of this (though I’m all for the hoodie look, see also Cary from The Good Wife). I’d say don’t get used to Nick in a suit, especially after last week’s orange tracksuit but if there is going to be a wedding in the season finale I think we can expect to see Nick in formal wear once again.

One aspect of Jess’ wardrobe that won’t be changing any time soon is her vast collection of pajamas (of which I am very jealous) and this was a point of contention in Jess and Cece’s argument in “Bachelorette Party”. This isn’t the first time that Jess and her pajama wearing ways have been used against her in this way and last season during a raging argument with Nick he yelled “Then throw some dumb pajama outfit on and then tell other people how to live their lives.” So what have the pajamas ever done to anyone? They could be seen as a symbol of this idea of Zooey Deschanel and Jess that some people view negatively; all of the cute/adorable/quirky qualities that have caused detractors to roll their eyes at this show. Or they could just be pajamas.
