Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

24 Dec

A slightly earlier festive edition of “Behind the Insta-Scenes” and one that doesn’t stick to just photos from the set as a lot of shows finished for the holidays prior to this week’s rotation. There is still fun to be had and a lot of season’s greetings from various shows.

Mindy Kaling’s custom Salvador Perez hot pink dress is a knockout and her Mindy Project date for the People Magazine Awards isn’t too shabby either.

Happy Holidays and photo booth frolics from Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu.

Billy Eichner stopped by The Soup and looks very cute in a Henley (Joel, your suit is also dashing). Get him on a CW show. Just think how much fun that would be.

More set festive wishes and this time from a more fractured family with Stephen Amell hiding beneath the hood,

A very cool atmospheric shot of Grant Gustin all suited up on The Flash.

Animal pictures and cast members who are friends IRL are two of the things I am a sucker for on Instagram and Looking’s Frankie J. Alvarez delivers on both as he thanks co-star Russell Tovey for letting him stay in London and gives the gift of Rocky (who is a big, super cute presence on Tovey’s account).

And here is delightful shot of the cast of Looking courtesy of season 2 newcomer Daniel Franzese.

Gillian Jacobs continues to be one of my favorite people. Plus the Christmas tree in the background rounds this post off nicely.

Happy Holidays from TV Ate My Wardrobe to all!

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

20 Nov

Welcome once again to Behind the Insta-Scenes! Bringing you a roundup of the best behind the scenes photos posted on Instagram from a variety of TV show and personal accounts from the people who are on them. This includes anything from future episode sneak peeks, what’s airing this week, flashing back to the past and general on set (and sometimes off) antics.

Included in the roundup this week are location shoots with swoony grins, superhero selfies and a mother/daughter reunion.

http://instagram.com/p/vjnZ3GJQ2f/?modal=true

The Mindy Project is shooting in San Francisco this week and Mindy Kaling has been sharing treats aplenty – amazing costumes ahoy – including this very romantic selfie with co-star Chris Messina. This is a frame worthy photo for Mindy’s apartment.

http://instagram.com/p/vjPtWxpQ_G/?modal=true

Same gorgeous location, but switching things up with a moody catalogue model pose.

A lot gets up Eli’s nose on The Good Wife including this very cool accidental shot.

Last week The CW revealed what Katie Cassidy’s superhero costume would look like on Arrow and here’s a close up of the mask (along with co-star Colton Haynes). Two thumbs up for the lipstick and dramatic eye flicks.

http://instagram.com/p/vj9HH9QPiI/?modal=true

Cougar Town is coming to an end and Busy Philipps pays tribute to hair stylist Michael Anton for all the crazy, fun hairstyles Laurie has had, including this very colorful ‘do.

So this isn’t from the Mad Men set – they are at the AMC Holiday Party – but I couldn’t resist this mother/daughter picture of happiness. As if Matthew Weiner would allow on set photos this far in advance of the final half of the season premiere.

30 Oct

Welcome once again to Behind the Insta-Scenes! A new feature offering a roundup of the best behind the scenes photos posted on Instagram from a variety of TV show and personal accounts from the people who are on them. This includes anything from future episode sneak peeks, what’s airing this week, flashing back to the past and general on set (and sometimes off set) antics.

Amazing outfits, a returning show and on set affection are all included in this week’s round up of the best of Instagram.

Cat socks! Colton Haynes is giving good and appropriate mesmerized face to these sock beauties (as modeled by Felicity Smoak herself Emily Bett Rickards).

The dudes of Looking are making it hard to pick a side when it comes to the Patrick decision of Richie versus Kevin (okay Kevin already has a boyfriend, but it is still a hard choice). Here are Russell Tovey and Jonathan Groff being super adorable while filming season 2.

Ticking off the clones on the Orphan Black set and after an appearance by Alison last week, Cosima is popping up to say hello.

More Mindy outfit delights on The Mindy Project and this patterned delight is by Issa. Not a real rooftop.

So this isn’t technically a TV set, nor is Taylor Swift necessarily a TV star (she did pop up on New Girl) but this week has been wall to wall Taylor thanks to the release of her new album 1989 (which I’ve been playing on repeat) and this Marco De Vincenzo pleated rainbow sparkly skirt is everything. Taylor’s is autumnal in tone and it is also available in purple hues.

A selfie for Selfie and this show has become one of my favorites from the new fall offerings; Karen Gillan is a big part of this. It is super charming and makes me laugh a bunch, but I fear the low ratings might make it go the way of the big cancellation disappointment from a show with a terrible name last season. I still miss you Trophy Wife.

Elementary returns tonight for season 3 and here is Jonny Lee Miller hanging around on set (I’ll get my coat).

French Connection’s Pre-Fall 2014 Collection: Dressing Arrow’s Felicity Smoak

17 Jun

A year ago I started the Fantasy Costuming as a way to look at new offerings from designers and stores alongside some of TV Ate My Wardrobe’s best dressed characters. For Scandal’s Olivia Pope, high end designers Olivia has previously worn such as Burberry Prorsum (and I picked that coat) were featured among some more affordable pieces. It is meant to be just a bit of fun and in no way am I saying that these items should feature on any of these shows, rather it is about whether you could see this character wearing this garment and drawing influence from what they have worn in the past.

The first character to receive the Fantasy Costuming treatment was Jess Day from New Girl using French Connection’s autumn wardrobe and it is only fitting then to use this brands pre-fall collection and one that has recently been released. Instead of treading ground with a character that has been featured heavily or has previously been Fantasy Costumed, I am going to take a look at a character I adore and who should be a more frequent TV Ate My Wardrobe staple and that is Arrow’s Felicity Smoak.

Felicity SmoakFelicity does the whole funky office wear with peplums and blouses – including this French Connection fitted jersey dress (also seen on The Mindy Project) – and French Connection’s pre-fall selection is perfectly suited for Felicity’s transitional style that bounces from clothes to wear behind a computer to chic, smart attire with a hint of out in the field work (even if it is sitting in a van and then using said van as a weapon).

There are no masks in Felicity’s wardrobe, neither is leather a key component and yet Felicity doesn’t wear just one type of garment or signature tone as both pattern and color blocking feature throughout. It’s not a choice of skirts or pants and Felicity can dress up or down for what the scenario demands. As Felicity’s confidence has grown so has the boldness of her costuming and season 2 saw raised hemlines and more fitted silhouettes. I don’t want to lose the empathetic qualities Felicity possesses along with her fierceness and so the mosaic and floral prints that dominate French Connection’s pre-fall wardrobe add a sense of whimsy in a world that grows darker.

New York Fashion Week: Fantasy Costuming with the Tracy Reese Spring 2014 Collection

10 Sep

The fall season is upon us and there’s time for one more fantasy costuming entry. At New York Fashion Week the stunning Tracy Reese Spring 2014 collection was unveiled and the press release describes it as “Sensuality, energy and optimism with an array of bold, spirited styles infused with Afro-Cuban influences to create an aesthetic full of texture and movement.” Bold patterns are something of a favorite here at TV Ate My Wardrobe and the blend of gingham, floral, polka dots and stripes alongside vibrant colors makes this a NYFW highlight.

Instead of picking one show or character we will be following the Burberry Prorsum model and opt for multiple shows and characters. These designs will appeal to a variety of demographics and narrowing the selection down to this amount was a challenge. Reese has used the vibrancy of Havana as an inspiration point and she told The Huffington Post that “The classicism that harks back to the 50’s and even the street culture today is melded and merged — young and old, black and white, everything in between. And everybody’s just enjoying the rhythm.”

Tracy Reese Spring 2014 collection

The first fantasy costuming piece we did was for Jess from New Girl and we tried to mix up Jess’ wardrobe by opting for a more monochromatic look. This colorful polka dot dress is quintessentially Jess; it’s super cute and the cut is incredibly feminine (if you click on the photo you can see the detail). The patterned neckerchief is a beautiful addition and this is my favorite look from the new Tracy Reese collection.

Tracy Reese

I love everything about this; the bright orange hue, the contrasting gingham blue pajama like pants, another great scarf and the bonus backpack with textured looking straps- I’m definitely having a backpack phase at the moment. This is something I can see Mindy wearing on The Mindy Project when she wants to look a bit more casual but also super stylish. Mindy doesn’t tend to wear pants all that often (when she’s not in scrubs or sweats) but I could definitely envision her in something like this.

Tracy Reese red and black stripes

While the henna tattoo is probably not something you would see on The Good Wife’s Alicia Florrick (unless she drank all the wine) this form fitting stripped dress is more her style. Alicia tends to color block her clothes and patterns don’t tend to feature, but as she is now setting up her own firm we might see Alicia switching out some of her standard suits and dresses for something a little more adventurous.

Tracy Reese white

I dipped in and out of Revenge last season as the conspiracy grew into a giant mess; the cliffhanger in the finale is enough to bring me back for now and this white floral dress embodies the picture of innocence that Emily tries to project while she is plotting her REEEEEEEEEVENGE.

Tracy Reese crop top

The full bodied skirt is one trend that I will definitely be embracing this season and while I’m not really a crop top fan, I can totally see Carrie from The Carrie Diaries rocking both of these looks. Yes the show is set in the 1980s, but the costuming has a tendency to pay homage to that time period without worrying about accuracy. This isn’t as bright as some of the other pieces but it is definitely as bold with the big floral print.

Tracy Reese lounge

Olivia Pope would probably not opt for the black and red striped top – though I’d love to see a flash of color in her wardrobe even if it goes against her ‘uniform’ – but those white pants with the black trim detail are perfect Olivia Pope lounge wear. This is where she eats popcorn and somehow doesn’t manage to spill red wine down herself, a feat I am constantly impressed with.

Tracy Reese lapels

On Parks and Recreation, April Ludgate is off to veterinary school and while we’ve already picked out some costuming for her next season this is another back to school look for April. This is probably a slightly more girly look than we are used to seeing, but it doesn’t stray into the bolder palette of this collection and more muted tones are an April staple. The bonus backpack features one of April’s favorite colors – mustard – and will be ideal for all those books she’s soon going to be carrying.

Tracy Reese flowers

On Arrow the Oliver, Diggle, Felicity team is the most fun aspect and while this dress might be outside of Felicity’s usual floral jersey dress comfort zone; it would be perfect for an undercover mission that gets Felicity out from behind the computer and into the field again. It’s super sexy and the embellished detail on this dress is stunning.

Tracy Reese blue

On New Girl Cece’s wardrobe tends to swing between form fitting bodycon when they go out and far less constricting baggy pants and vest when they are lounging around the loft. The above Tracy Reese combination is maybe a little out there for Cece but it would look stunning on her regardless and the two very different types of floral embellishment is power clashing at its finest. She could also donate the gingham strapped backpack to Jess for the new school year.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

2 Aug

Last week it was all about Comic-Con style and this edition of “Out of the Box” looks to the panels and parties of the Television Critics Association Press Summer Tour. Current and forthcoming shows with plenty of familiar faces feature as we take a look at the big style hitters.

Winner: James Wolk at The Crazy Ones Panel

James Wolk Crazy Ones TCA

“Not great, Bob!” is still one of the best line readings of the year and James Wolk has featured several times on this list thanks to the sartorial greatness of Bob Benson on Mad Men. The Crazy Ones is also set at an ad agency and while I’m pretty lukewarm to the promos, having James Wolk as a cast member (and the bonus of Kelly Clarkson) will be enough to get me to watch the pilot. Even though it’s the height of the summer, Wolk has gone for an impressive amount of layering with shirt, hoodie and jacket and he looks pretty great in a smart/casual manner. His face is saying he’s listening intently, his slightly raised eyebrow suggests disagreement. Either way Wolk is a welcome sight.

Runner Up: Claire Danes at the Homeland Panel

Claire+Danes+2013+Summer+TCA+Tour+Day+6+AydrrD5aTWil

Claire Danes is the only one I’ve mentioned but she is not alone in this shot; Damian Lewis’ suit is lovely and if his socks were not skin tone then he’d have his name in bold too and Rupert Friend looks like he has come from a Mary Poppins audition. Danes is often one of the best dressed on the red carpet and while you can’t see all of the Thakoon lilac dandelion dress because she is sitting down; it’s elegant without looking like she is trying too hard. I think the key behind TCA dresses is a late afternoon/early evening cocktail party approach and all of the women that feature this week have got that spot on. The Christian Louboutin t-bar sandals are now on my shoe wish list.

Mae Whitman and Lauren Graham at the Parenthood Panel

Mae Whitman and Lauren Graham

Reminding me once again that I still haven’t watched Parenthood (I know) this double dash of patterned dress brilliance from Lauren Graham and Mae Whitman is making me want to get right on that. While I’m not the biggest fan of nude colored shoes they get a pass as the dresses are both on the eye-popping side. Bonus points awarded for excellent lip color.

Hannah Simone at the Fox TCA Party

Hannah Simone

While I might not have paired nude shoes – we already know how I feel about them and it’s a bit matchy matchy with a nude dress – this is a striking look from Hannah Simone thanks to the orange floral lace detail. It’s another great choice for a relaxed summer event like this where you want to look professional without resorting to floor length gowns or jeans and t-shirt. I miss New Girl and so I’m really happy to see the cast out and about again.

Runner Up: Emily Bett Rickards at the CW, CBS and Showtime TCA Party

Emily Rickards TCA

The Felicity/Diggle/Oliver team is at the heart of Arrow and hopefully this is something season will capitalize on. Emily Bett Rickards gets footwear approval as she opts for orange heels that go with this blue, flower embellished dress. This is a dress that can be dressed down with flats or dressed up in this manner with a pair of bold heals and a simple clutch.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

10 May

It’s been a month since TV Ate My Wardrobe launched and so before I get to the “Look of the Week” I just want to say thanks to everyone who has stopped by. To the “Look of the Week” and as always this is a snapshot of what I have been watching and each pick is for a variety of reasons including; what it adds to the storyline, what it tells us about the characters involved or simply because it looks good. I’m already missing the wigs and 80s styling on The Americans and the April Ludgate clothes I covet on Parks and Recreation (but so happy that Parks got picked up for season 6 yesterday). This week’s winner is slightly different than normal as it is a place rather than a person.

Winner: The Bathroom in Hannibal “Sorbet”

Hannibal bathroomThis is the first time that a location has been given “Look of the Week” and once again the costuming on Hannibal was exceptional (as was the discussion about Hannibal wearing a “person suit”) but it feels like a good time to shine a light on Hannibal’s fantastic sets. If you follow Hannibal showrunner Bryan Fuller on Twitter (and you really should) you will already know that the above image is a reference to Room Number 237 in The Shining. This isn’t the first set that is an homage to the Stanley Kubrick film as the pilot’s red bathroom was also a nod to the Overlook. Here is a confession; I have never seen The Shining the whole way through (I did read the book a few months ago) and this is something that I will rectify soon. Even without the knowledge of where the look of this set comes from I was still very drawn to the chaos of the tiles particularly when Will is sat in front of them; it feels like the chaos in his mind as Jack pushes him closer to the edge.

Hannibal is visually stunning from the costuming to the set design and if it doesn’t get renewed by NBC then we will be losing a show that is outstanding on every level.

Runner Up: Jess Day on New Girl “Winston’s Birthday”

NG_ep224-sc23_09C8338This outfit in “Winston’s Birthday” is typically Jess; a pretty dress and cardigan combo. The reason why I have chosen it is thanks to the rising number of sites that tell us where you can buy something you have seen on a show (and because it’s something that I would wear). This started in 2000 when ASOS.com launched and was called As Seen on Screen and they sold clothes that featured in films and TV shows (or cheaper alternatives). Now instead of a site that sells the clothes there are blogs that tell you where you can buy these outfits from. InStyle also has a “Found It” column and often features clothing from New Girl that tells you what brand the clothing is. The combination of the mint green (Jessica Simpson) dress and yellow (Kate Spade) cardigan has a calming influence, something that Jess needs as she tries to juggle multiple things at once in this episode.

Runner Up: Megan Draper on Mad Men “For Immediate Release”

MM_606_MY_0116_0632Megan is a divisive character on Mad Man but I am firmly on Team Zou Bisou Bisou. Initially this comes from her main introduction when she comforted Sally after she had fallen in the middle of the SCDP office in the season 4 episode “The Beautiful Girls.” The other reason is because Megan gets to wear all of the high end, really fashionable (for the 1960s) clothes because she is the most fashion forward character. Janie Bryant has done a terrific job of finding really stunning pieces and as the patterns get bolder so does Megan’s style. This is a different twist on last week which saw Megan in a dress that could have been inspired by I Dream of Jeannie; instead this metallic dress evokes the space travel obsession of this era. There are earlier complaints in the episode that rockets are all anyone wants in advertising but the same can also be said for fashion at this time. You can’t see it from the above photo but this is also the shortest hemline we have seen Megan in as she takes her mother’s advice and gets her husband to think about seeing her as more than just a wife.

Runner Up: Oliver Queen and Felicity Smoak on Arrow “Darkness on the Edge of Town”

ArrowIt’s the penultimate episode of Arrow and this first season has been a fun ride; “Darkness on the Edge of Town” featured a sequence that was so slick and enjoyable that I thought I was watching a White Collar heist. This is compliment as one thing White Collar excels at is getting Neal Caffrey in and out of dangerous situations. Back to Arrow and the Oliver, Diggle, Felicity team has been reunited and nothing says “Let’s celebrate” like messing with a computer in a highly guarded building. Costuming wise Oliver gets to look great in a suit (standard), Diggle plays security guard and Felicity is a delivery girl. The pairing of Oliver and Felicity exposes an Arrow weakness and that is the lack of chemistry between Oliver and Laurel, who are meant to be the central love story. Instead it is Oliver and Felicity that have a great rapport and this has me rooting against the couple I’m meant to be rooting for. Felicity is wonderfully awkward in the scene where she has to hang onto Oliver as when he tells her to “Hold on to me tight” she responds with “I imagined you saying that under different circumstances. Very platonic circumstances.”
