2014 Golden Globes: Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s Winning Style

13 Jan

Another awards with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler at the helm, in which they were sadly largely absent during the middle and where they pushed the envelope in a way that Ricky Gervais never could “And now, like a supermodel’s vagina, let’s all give a warm welcome to Leonardo DiCaprio.” There were a couple of moments that didn’t work in the opening monologue – the Captain Phillips gags are super questionable – but overall they did what we all hoped they would do and made us laugh a lot. Plus Amy Poehler finally won an award! This pretty much made my evening.

Amy and Tina red carpetFirst up the red carpet and Amy’s gone for Stella McCartney that turns the simple black gown on its head with asymmetric detail. This might be the best her hair has ever looked and that wry smile suggests that she knows this. Tina Fey has opted for a vibrant floral printed Carolina Herrera frock and voluminous hair and it’s only going to get bigger.

Amy and TinaThe pair pretty much wore the same colors from the opening monologue last year with Tina going for oxblood this time around – the beading on this dress is exquisite.

Tina and Amy drinkng Golden GlobesAnother change and updos and strapless dresses for both. By this point it was probably needed as the show had descended into rambling speech chaos. That’s the beauty of the Golden Globes – alcohol on the tables. Some nice shade throwing in Taylor Swift’s direction from Tina Fey as she congratulated Amy Poehler with “I just want to say congratulations again to my friend Amy Poehler, I love you and there’s a special place in hell for you.”

Amy Poehler winWhile we’re on the subject of Amy Poehler winning, here is that moment and I’m pretty sure it’s the happiest I’ve ever seen my Twitter feed on an awards night. It’s been a long time coming.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

10 Jan

Out of the Box is glad to have several shows back this week and to celebrate we’re taking a red carpet break before this weekend’s Golden Globes to focus on the looks that stood out on TV. The People’s Choice Awards were pretty uninspiring and one of the only notable outfits was Anna Faris’ Golden Girls like ensemble (I mean this as a compliment), everything else was pretty shoulder shrug and it’s clear that all the top shelf gowns have been reserved for this weekend. So let’s turn to TV; we’ve got a couple of dresses, a fur and leopard print combo, plus an exquisite shot from the new season of The Bridge (the Scandinavian version).

Donna LaDonna The Carrie DiariesIt’s a travesty that Donna LaDonna hasn’t appeared in the spotlight on these pages as she is pretty much The Carrie Diaries fashion MVP. Everything she wears is over the top, but this is the ’80s and we don’t need to see a refrained mean girl. Donna is more than just the cliché queen bee and she instantly makes any scene better. On last Friday’s episode she gave Dorrit some bad advice and yet she more than made up for it by challenging Mouse to beer pong, followed by some drunken spooning. These two characters are my everything (actually I might need to add Walt and Bennett to this list). Donna’s party outfit is made up of a Topshop faux-fur bomber jacket and leopard print dress because of course. Don’t ever change Donna and don’t leave me show.

NG_311-5_0312Jess Day wears super cute dress, not a shocker I know but I’m easing into 2014 and the Kate Spade nautical inspired look on this week’s New Girl is delightful. The tray of frogs is obscuring the oversized belted midsection that cinches the dress in at the waist and the red, white and blue is giving off some springtime feels (considering I’m writing this with a glove on it’s nice to pretend it’s warmer than it is).

Leslie and Ben ParisHappy 100th episode to Parks and Recreation and while they were over in London shooting the season 6 premiere they hopped across the Channel to Paris to film scenes for this milestone episode. Ben and Leslie are doing the whole tourist thing so a selfie in front of the Arc de Triomphe is forgivable (who am I kidding my Instagram is full of these kinds of shots, sadly not in Paris). Leslie’s mesh patchwork dress from M Missoni uses pattern and color to create an interesting visual; if she wore this in Pawnee it might look out of place, for Paris it is perfect.

Saga Broen On The Bridge Saga Norén favors leather pants and while they might not be the most practical for clambering aboard a vessel, they are as much a part of her as her US counterpart Sonya with her leather jacket. The second season of The Bridge started on BBC4 this week; this stunning shot showcases one of the protagonists and the endless seeming bridge that joins Sweden and Denmark and that gives the show its name. Yes I’ve added Saga’s coat to the covet list. You will be able to watch season 1 of The Bridge on Hulu from January 14 and even if you’ve already watched the FX version it’s worth checking out for the central pairing alone.

Elle Unveils Their Annual Women in TV Issue

6 Jan

The February issue of Elle magazine is their annual Women in TV special and the 2014 cover stars are all faces from comedy. TV and magazines are both things that I hold in high regard so when the two are combined it’s time to celebrate and the four women on the covers are all TV Ate My Wardrobe favorites. So who are they and what do their individual shots looks like?

Amy Poehler ElleFirst up Amy Poehler and she looks like an extra Angel or ’70s rock star (I’m thinking of either Heart or The Pretenders). Despite my reservations caused by a hairstyle that is reminiscent of the half perm Leslie Knope got last season, it helps that Poehler always looks like she’s having a good time on cover shoots even if some of the styling is questionable. There’s definitely something mischievous about her smile. Less than a week until Amy Poehler co-hosts The Golden Globes and I couldn’t be more excited.

Zooey Deschanel ElleIf Amy Poehler gets to rock a ’70s vibe, then Zooey Deschanel is going for full late ’60s and this dress perfectly suits her She & Him musical persona. This is the TV issue and while this twee getup is in her wheelhouse I would have liked to see something that challenges the perception of who Deschanel is (like this Marie Claire cover). It’s also a tad heavy on the bangs (a statement that sounds ridiculous I know), this I blame on how they’ve cropped the top of her head.

Allison Williams ElleWe’ve got the ’60s and ’70s covered and Girls’ Allison Williams gets the ’80s off the shoulder/long sleeve dress look. For some reason the bottom of this dress resembles a crotch napkin which is not so appealing, however the messy hair/dark eyes works with this outfit choice. Williams tends to wear classic, preppy styles and unlike the Deschanel cover they’ve tried out something different. I could totally see Donna LaDonna from The Carrie Diaries wearing this.

Mindy Kaling ElleMindy Kaling looks stunning in this shot and yet once again I have composition complaints; why is this the only black and white cover? And why is Kaling the only one who doesn’t get a full body shot? I’ve already mentioned how excited I am about this issue; particularly with the women who are covering it and this might be why I’m finding fault with each image choice. These criticisms have nothing to do with the actresses in question and Elle is one of the best fashion magazines when it comes to cover images and content (I am also a subscriber); I’m just disappointed on the whole with these photographs. The inside editorials will hopefully be more inspiring. It hits newsstands January 14.

What do you think of these shots? Am I being too harsh?

Best of TV Costuming 2013: Leslie Knope’s Wedding Dress

23 Dec

Continuing TV Ate My Wardrobe’s “Best of 2013″ costuming series and rather than doing a straightforward countdown we’re going to do a variety of posts that look at which costumes and shows have made a huge impact this year. From items that we want in our own wardrobe to pieces that got everyone talking, we want to look at this year’s TV through the prism of costume.

In the Parks and Recreation two-parter “Emergency Response” and “Leslie and Ben” the group throws an impromptu park fundraiser followed by an even more spontaneous wedding. Unconventional wedding ceremonies and huge group projects give Parks and Rec the chance to show off their most heartwarming and hilarious material. On this occasion it also led to one of my favorite pieces of costume design from 2013.

Parks and Recreation - Season 5Leslie’s wedding dress is only half made as their wedding has been moved up by three months and it’s down to Ann to turn it into something that Leslie can wear. Eight years of Project Runway watching and five years of being Leslie’s BFF leads to a surprisingly unflustered Ann and the end result is stunning. Ann has collected all the meaningful bills, pictures, documents, newspaper clippings and memos from Leslie’s life and created a tiered full skirt to finish off the dress. Some suspension of disbelief is required, for me this is easy to do because it’s such a beautiful moment and Parks and Rec excels at triumph in the face of adversity (time being the problem, later followed by Jamm).

Parks and Recreation - Season 5For Leslie this gown is the most beautiful thing she has seen – it’s the “Ann Perkins of dresses.” The Leslie/Ann friendship is something I addressed earlier this year after it was announced that both Rashida Jones and Rob Lowe would be leaving the show; it’s one of the strongest female friendships on TV (Snake Juice aside) and Ann’s role in the wedding prep underscores how vital their relationship is. Change is an important aspect of challenging character dynamics and of course I will miss this pairing and yet I’m also excited to see how they will respond to losing two regular cast members.

A wedding is a sitcom staple (hell How I Met Your Mother is using a wedding as the basis for their entire final season) and it gives an opportunity for sentimentality among all of the characters, even the ones who reject this.

Parks and Recreation - Season 5Yep I’m looking at you Ron Swanson as he tells Leslie in the scene above “You are a wonderful person, you’re friendship means a lot to me and you look very beautiful.” This is also a great time to point out the pop of red from Leslie’s shoes and the flower hair accessory – she did say that she wanted “the sensuality of Eleanor Roosevelt and the animal magnetism of Lesley Stahl” and I’m going to go ahead and say she got both of those things, just because. It’s a very unique and distinctive wedding gown; it’s perfectly Leslie Knope.

Parks and Recreation - Season 5This is a picture heavy post even though I’m talking about one dress and the shot above is here mostly because they are the most adorable couple on TV; no they’re not particularly edgy and there’s little to no conflict and this is why they win the adorable title. My favorite TV marriage of all time is Eric and Tami Taylor (of course) and I can see a lot of them in Leslie and Ben. Yes the two shows are in very different genres, however at their heart both are about community and lean towards a more optimistic outlook. For Leslie and Ben the reason why they appeal so much can be summed up by this “You’re all I need. I love you and I like you.”

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

20 Dec

‘Tis the season to wear sparkly frocks and after the LBD heavy edition a couple of weeks ago we’re injecting a bit of color and bold patterns into this column.

Kate MaraAfter seeing the new Hobbit movie this week Kate Mara’s J. Mendel dress is giving off elf vibes thanks to two tiered metallic green and ivory leaf detail. Festive feelings are enhanced by the beautiful gold clutch and yet it doesn’t come across as attempting to be all that Christmassy. I still haven’t seen House of Cards (or OITNB, or Arrested Development even though I have Netflix *sigh*) and considering how divisive it has been it’s on my long list of catch-up projects.

Premiere Of Open Road Films' "Justin Bieber's Believe" - ArrivalsKiernan Shipka’s red carpet style has been consistent in its excellence this year (and yes I’m fine that a 14 year-old has way better clothes than me) and this week she looks delightful in RED Valentino. The floral/polka dot crossover is something I raved about with Oscar de la Renta’s Spring 2014 collection and this take on it is super cute. One reason why Shipka’s red carpet style is so good is because she dresses for her age and I hope this continues in 2014.

Amy Poehler Alice and OliviaMaybe it’s the time of year and if Amy Poehler wore this in April it would look like a regular dress, as it’s December I’m seeing ‘an angel at the top of the tree’ frock. Now that I’ve written this it sounds bad, far from it and the puff sleeves/A-line design is what’s reading angel to me. It’s icy looking and the black pattern adds to the winter wonderland feel of this Alice + Oliva dress. The bold lipstick is the pop of color this outfit needs.

Cristin MiliotiThe series finale date has been set for How I Met Your Mother (March 31) and I soured on this show long before Cristin Milioti was revealed to be the mother. That doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate this Peter Pilotto creation and I might have to include it in the superhero couture that began with Olivia Pope’s Rubin Singer gown on Scandal earlier this season. This might have something to do with Milioti’s red carpet pose and it’s definitely one of the most visually arresting dresses I have seen this year. As a very tenuous link and because we said goodbye to 30 Rock this year here is Milioti in one of my favorite episodes (“TGS Hates Women”).

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

13 Dec

It’s another red carpet and public appearance heavy week for Out of the Box as award shows continue to roll by. We also have a fabulous magazine cover featuring two of TV Ate My Wardrobe’s favorite ladies and some outerwear delights courtesy of Mr Porter and a Downton Abbey star.

Amy Poehler and Tina Fey EW coverIt’s been a while since I last bought a copy of Entertainment Weekly, that all changes this week as Amy Poehler and Tina Fey are covering and guest editing this week’s issue. The pair are presenting their second consecutive Golden Globe awards and they were easily the highlight of last year’s ceremony. It’s a fun cover (though Amy’s pen did look like a pregnancy test upon first glance, which would have been a bizarre concept choice) and I really like the button/zip details on both of their dresses. No matter who wins (and I have OPINIONS when it comes to the nominations, including yay Amy and Parks!) at least we will have their opening monologue. This is also Amy Poehler’s second magazine cover this week and she looks super awesome (standard) on the cover of Paper.

Claire Danes ValentinoOne surprising omission from the lead female in a drama category is Claire Danes – SO happy for Tatiana Maslany though – and both Homeland and Mad Men have fallen out of favor with the HFPA. Danes has spent this week at a variety of Nobel Peace Prize events in Norway and she looks stunning in this Valentino floral macramé gown. It’s a beautiful dress for this concert event and toning down her hair and makeup makes sense as the multi-color pattern is already incredibly bold. Danes might not have got a Globes nod, but is still looks like she’s had a good week. It’s not all snubs as she received a SAG nomination.

Zawe Ashton

In contrast to Claire Danes’ embellished frock is Fresh Meat’s Zawe Ashton and she attended the British Independent Film Awards in this simple, yet elegant Sarah Baadarani crew neck dove grey gown. While I would have probably gone for a strong lip color, the fresh faced no fuss look works on this occasion. It’s a very striking outfit even against a similarly toned background.

Michelle Dockery Erdem

Downton Abbey’s Michelle Dockery wore the most exquisite Erdem check and floral coat on Good Morning America this week and it looks like it was needed in that weather. The hint of the orange Carven skirt and white pumps gives a pop of color that complements the strong design of the outerwear. This gets added to the coat covet list (which currently stands at approximately 78 different pieces).

Zachary Quinto

Serving up model realness and more coat delights is Zachary Quinto for Mr Porter. This is from Burberry Prorsum and it is magnificent. The TV Ate My Wardrobe list includes dudes attire so we just hit number 79.

Festive Rewind: Parks and Recreation “Citizen Knope”

11 Dec

It’s TV Ate My Wardrobe’s first festive season and to mark this occasion we are hosting a very special rewind series. What this means is that we will be featuring a whole host of guest posts and in the spirit of the holidays we have asked a variety of writers to discuss a festive episode of their choice. These will be appear on the site over the next couple of weeks and there’s an eclectic mix including teen dramas, science fiction, animation, comedy, drama and more to get you in the celebratory mood. Or to at least give you plenty of suggestions of TV to watch over the break.

Today’s guest post comes courtesy of Elena as we take a trip to Pawnee, Indiana.

ParksandRecreation_GingerbreadHouseLike most Christmas-themed episodes, Parks and Recreation’s fourth season episode “Citizen Knope” introduces a potentially catastrophic setback for Leslie that ends up being solved by the love and support of her friends. While most of the episode strays from a typical holiday-themed plot, the narrative threads all have a sense of optimism and joy that characterizes the Christmas season.

In “Citizen Knope,” Leslie is dealing with the fallout of her and Ben’s affair. They’re officially a couple after the trial that aired all their relationship dirty laundry from season three, but there’s been some pretty huge fallout: Leslie is suspended from her Parks job, and Ben resigned in disgrace and starts looking for new employment. The episode follows the couple as they figure out the next step in their lives. For Ben, that means going on job interviews to be an accounting firm’s accountant, with a boss who laughs a little too hard at corny jokes, as well as trying his hand at some corporate finance with Pawnee’s cologne mogul, Dennis Feinstein. For Leslie, this means circumventing her suspension by forming a citizen action committee to petition the Parks and Recreation department for various community improvements.

In the Parks office, although Leslie is suspended, she gives her friends some extremely thoughtful Christmas gifts. Highlights include Tom’s gift, a tiny throne and a watch with an insert that reads “Baller Time!” because he wasn’t able to go to the Watch The Throne tour, and an oil painting for April, of her victoriously decapitating all the members of the Black Eyed Peas in a Xena-like outfit. The gang think of a present to give to Leslie that will even the gift-giving scale, and come up with making a gingerbread and candy model of the Parks office. After some mishaps with accidentally ingesting poisoned silver M&Ms and a lot of marshmallow models of the Parks employees, the gang creates something that Leslie will most definitely love.

April_BlackEyedPeas

Ben, after a disastrous job interview with Dennis Feinstein (who very much enjoys hunting people for sport), is about to take a job with the accounting firm when he fortuitously runs into Jean-Ralphio, who had just gotten a Brazilian wax from a woman named Kim. Like a puffy-haired Christmas angel, Jean-Ralphio encourages Ben to follow his passions. He wisely reiterates some advice he got from Kim: “She told me, ‘If you don’t love what you do, then why do it?’ Then she ripped the hair from my b-hole.” Jean-Ralphio gives Ben a different perspective on his current situation, and while he does so in the douchiest way possible, Jean-Ralphio saves Ben from a huge mistake. Jean-Ralphio is not the Christmas angel Ben deserved, but he’s definitely the one he needed at that moment.

As Leslie is working in her citizen action committee, she meets with her campaign managers to talk strategy after the trial, but soon discovers that because of the scandal involving Ben she has dropped to 1% in the polling numbers. Feeling defeated, Leslie goes back to the Parks office. She sees the gingerbread house that her friends made her as a present and is touched, but it’s what happens next that truly makes “Citizen Knope” a Christmas episode.

Ron presents Leslie with a small wooden model of her in the City Council chambers, and a banner unfurls from the ceiling behind him with the words “Knope 2012.” Ron tells Leslie that her dream of running for City Council is not dead, but through the compassion of her friends, it’s been revived. A true Christmas miracle. One by one each character offers Leslie help on her campaign: Andy’s the bodyguard, Tom is an image coach, Jerry is clueless to the whole endeavor. As each friend steps up and declares to Leslie that she is a person worth making sacrifices for, it cements the true meaning of Christmas: the importance of family, friends and love, a love that will put others before itself. Leslie’s choked, overwhelmed “thank you” was a beautiful moment from Amy Poehler, sweet and triumphant, all the more resonant now because she did win that City Council seat because of her friends.

The scene reminded me of the end of It’s A Wonderful Life, where the whole town gathered to help George with his bank loan. Each person in the town contributed what they could, because George had helped them so much throughout their lives. Leslie Knope is Parks and Recreations’ George. “Citizen Knope” began with Leslie’s generous outpouring of gifts, and ended with her friends giving her the best Christmas gift a person could have: hope.

Amy Poehler Covers Paper Magazine and the New Golden Globes Promo

9 Dec

Next month Amy Poehler and Tina Fey are hosting their second consecutive Golden Globe Awards and I think it’s safe to say that all the good things I can remember about last year pretty much come from this pair. If my Twitter feed is anything to go by then award season is in full flow and it’s the Golden Globes that I’m looking forward to the most thanks to the hosts, the copious amounts of booze on the tables and the combined TV/film factor. And hey a trailer has been released and it’s awesome (you can see it at the bottom). Amy Poehler is also gracing the cover of the holiday issue of Paper magazine.

Amy Poehler paper magazine

Poehler discusses a whole host of topics including the selfie explosion – “the amount of Instagram selfies seems crazy out-of-control” – what it’s like to be on a show with a unstable future, a New York memory of Lou Reed and her first festive season at SNL and what an amazing/surreal experience that was

“I remember a Christmas show with Elijah Wood… So you say goodnight onstage, and then you run really fast, and put ice skates on, and you get to ice skate at Rockefeller Center. And that was the first time I ever: 1) skated at Rockefeller Center, and 2) skated along with 10 other people that were my friends. It was snowing, it was Christmas and the day before, we all got to go to the The Lord of the Rings premiere. I was a big fan of the films. And I remember thinking, ‘Oh, this is totally awesome.'”

As with most things Amy Poehler related the interview is incredibly irreverent, while also hitting on some touching notes too.  To read the whole piece head here.

The super cute cat hat on the cover photo is from Eugina Kim and the coat is Louis Vuitton.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

6 Dec

‘Tis the season for all of those end of year musings and the start of the many award shows between now and the Oscars. “Out of the Box” is taking a look at the red carpet offerings from this week, in what I should imagine will be the first of many award show fashion posts in the coming months. While I might normally moan about the absence of color, as it’s heading towards the holiday season the variety of twists on the LBD is more than acceptable.

Gotham Awards

There is so much to say about this group shot from the Gotham Independent Film Awards and bullet points seem like the best way forward:

  • Michael B. Jordan has been killing it on the red carpet all year and I’m so happy to see him getting so much recognition; he picked up Breakthrough Actor for Fruitvale Station at this awards show.
  • Rashida Jones has filmed her last Parks and Recreation episode which is giving me all the Leslie and Ann related sads, but yay for real life friendship.
  • Also Amy Poehler looks stunning in a leather shouldered Catherine Deane dress. And yes I’m totally digging her real life romance with Nick Kroll who hosted the Gotham Awards. Will ‘The Douche’ make an appearance this season?
  • Oh hey, Jordan Catalano’s hair is super long and I kind of like it. While my teen crush on Jared Leto has all but gone I am looking forward to seeing Dallas Buyers Club and the inevitable reunion with Claire Danes at the Golden Globes. This needs to happen.

Zosia MametAt the same event Girls star Zosia Mamet looks super cute in a Rebecca Minkoff black mini jersey dress. Mamet’s red carpet face tends to give off an air of boredom, not on this occasion where she looks super smiley and comfortable. I’m also very much in love with her chunky buckled black shoes and while I don’t tend to be a heel wearer, I’m definitely coveting this pair.

Clemence Posey

This is how you do winter floral and The Tunnel star Clémence Poésy accompanies designer Erdem to the British Fashion Awards – he picked up the Red Carpet Award – and Poésy shows just why he won, as she’s rocking an Erdem creation. While I haven’t been loving the sheer trend overall (see every Dior gown Jennifer Lawrence wore for the Catching Fire press tour), Erdem has used this technique well and one of my favorite looks at the Met Gala earlier this year was Lena Dunham in Erdem.

Julianna Margulies

It’s been a big week for Julianna Margulies as The Good Wife celebrated 100 episodes and she looks stunning in Pamella Roland at the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation Gala dinner. The contrasting element of the crisscross bodice with the full skirt (with bonus pockets!) is elegant and adds fun twist on the monochrome trend that has been big this year. I’d maybe like to see a crimson lip tone, but other than that this is a great look for the Good Wife star.

Variety “Power of Women” Red Carpet

7 Oct

Variety’s fifth annual Power of Women luncheon was held on Friday and honored 7 women who have used their star power for philanthropic work and after Amy Poehler delivered an important message about her work with Worldwide Orphans (that you can watch at the bottom) she joked that “Thank you to all the bossy, right amount of crazy women in this room. Giving to charity is good for your skin and makes your ass smaller.”

Power of Women group photo

Aisha Tyler hosted the event and the recipients as you can see in the photo above are Jennifer Hudson, Elizabeth Banks, the aforementioned Amy Poehler, Charlize Theron, Kerry Washington, Amy Pascal and Nicole Kidman. This is an impressive group of women and you can find about their charity work here.

Turning over to the red carpet at this luncheon and it’s good to see an array of styles and colors among the honorees with host Aisha Tyler working the neon pink to maximum effect. After a week of many public appearances and some dubious dress choices (the big gingham number springs to mind) Kerry Washington wore a Vince Camuto cocktail dress that reminds us why she is top of the best dressed lists. The gold polka dots are an instant favorite here and studded Christian Louboutin ‘Malabar Hill’ pumps add an extra bit of flare to the outfit. Elizabeth Banks also looks stunning in this red Dolce & Gabbana top and skirt with lace detail. I’m so excited about what Elizabeth Banks will be bringing to the huge Hunger Games press tour next month and all things Effie related. I could however, do without the nude Louboutin’s that she is wearing at this luncheon.

Kerry Washington and Elizabeth Banks

Some of the cast of Scandal were on hand to support Kerry Washington and Darby Stanchfield’s super pretty Valentino pastel graphic floral design is my favorite outfit from this luncheon. Stanchfield has been on crazy good form with her red carpet choices recently and her new look on the season 3 premiere of Scandal is definitely giving me some red hair envy.

Darby Stanchfield Variety

Amy Poehler looks great in this teal long sleeved Beckley by Melissa with Worldwide Orphan founder Dr. Jane Aronson, who Poehler first met in 2009 at a Glamour magazine Woman of the Year event. You can watch a video of Amy Poehler talking about this cause, how great TV is at the moment as well as part of her speech. Did it suddenly get dusty in here?
