2013 Costume Designer Guild Award Nominees Announced

9 Jan

Award season is in full swing and the Costume Designer Guild has announced who is in the running for 16th annual Costume Awards. The event will take place on Saturday, February 22 and some of TV Ate My Wardrobe’s most talked about shows have been nominated. They are split into three categories and this means that period and contemporary costuming doesn’t go up against each other. As is the general rule with awards nominations there are some shows that I think deserved recognition and are absent, particularly first season standouts like Masters of Sex, HannibalThe Americans, The Bridge and Sleepy Hollow.

Here is the full list of the TV nominees.

Josh Charles Discusses The Good Wife and Golden Globes

2 Jan

The supporting actor/actress TV categories at the Golden Globes include comedy, drama, mini-series and TV movie. This is a lot of different types of shows to cover and it often resembles a strange mix of genre and quite often famous faces. This year is no different and The Good Wife’s Josh Charles is the only network representative with comedy getting completely shut out – the other four nominees are Aaron Paul, Rob Lowe, Jon Voight and Corey Stoll – and he sat down with Gold Derby to chat about this nomination and this excellent season of The Good Wife.

The Good Wife Network vs. cable is discussed and Charles explains that he goes back and forth on the notion that it’s unfair to compare the two. What he does mention is that “good writing is good writing” and The Good Wife has been consistently on top of their game, with season 5 taking it to the next level. Time and structure are two constraints as cable has far fewer episodes and tend to shoot the bulk, if not all of them before they air. Whereas typically The Good Wife is only four episodes ahead of what has aired. This does work in their favor sometimes as they can respond to current news events and the references don’t feel stale by the time it is broadcast.

Individual episodes like “Hitting the Fan” and “The Giving Tree” are reference and both serve as series highlights. Getting into Will’s psyche was a fun experience for Charles as it’s rare for Will to drop his mask and from this Sunday’s preview (which you can watch below) it looks like Will has put the defenses back up and is using arrogance once again as a coping strategy.

Josh Charles has already directed two episodes and he reveals that episode 19 is his next time at the helm. When talking about guest stars he mentions Victor Garber. I am beyond excited that Spy Daddy is showing up on both Sleepy Hollow and The Good Wife in the coming weeks.

Mad Men Women Honored at the 2013 Crystal & Lucy Awards

13 Jun

Last night the women of Mad Men attended the 2013 Women in Film Crystal & Lucy Awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles and received the 2013 Lucy Award for Excellence in Television. January Jones, Elisabeth Moss, Jessica Paré and Kiernan Shipka collected the award on behalf of the show and this is Moss’ second award of the week as she received the Critics’ Choice Award for Top of the Lake.

Mad Men womenIt has been a big week for Kiernan Shipka’s character Sally Draper as she caught Don sleeping with Sylvia, Shipka showed once again what a remarkable actress she is as she reacted with horror, repulsion and disbelief at her father’s actions. While this season has been light on the Sally appearances this is surely going to leave its mark on Don and damage their relationship for the time being. Shipka once again looks age appropriate in a black star patterned dress and this is another red carpet hit for her.

It’s rare that we get to see all four of these women in a scene together (possibly the only time is in one of my favorite episodes, season four’s “The Beautiful Girls”) but all of them have being doing great work this year on Mad Men with January Jones being the big surprise as Betty has been a highlight rather than a hindrance.

When they took to the stage Elisabeth Moss said “Mad Men has taken an unintentional political stance by simply treating women like human beings.  Our show is a truly special and spirited place in Hollywood.”

Critics’ Choice 2013 TV Awards Red Carpet Highlights: Diane Kruger and Elisabeth Moss

11 Jun

Last night the Critics’ Choice 2013 TV Awards took place in Los Angeles at the Beverly Hilton Hotel with Parks and Recreation favorite Retta hosting the proceedings. While Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad tied in the Best Drama Series category, there is also a tie here at TV Ate My Wardrobe for best red carpet look between Elisabeth Moss who has featured multiple times in our “Look of the Week” and Diane Kruger, who will most likely become a weekly staple of this column.

elisabeth moss critics choice

The haircut that Elisabeth Moss got backstage on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon coupled with the blonde color continues to be a defining look (and I think we can put Moss in the group of women who look better with shorter hair, a group I adore). It sets her apart from the character we are so used to seeing her play, a character that has to be tough around the edges because of her job and the decade she is working in. This makes Moss look more youthful and fun, something that is missing from Peggy most of the time.

The plunging pink Valentino prom style dress suits this event and really compliments this new hairstyle. Moss has opted for toned down makeup, but I think a strong lip color would really set it off.

Elisabeth Moss took home the award for Best Actress in a Mini-Series or Movie for Top of the Lake and she joked that “I’ve never won an award for acting. I have to remember not to thank anyone from Mad Men!”

Diane Kruger critics choice red carpet

Diane Kruger is a fashion icon both on and off the red carpet because she takes chances but also has an eye for Old Hollywood glamour and this black strapless Nina Ricci gown falls into the latter camp. The sweetheart neckline evokes Jessica Rabbit and the retro inspired waves give the impression that Kruger is a 1950s starlet. The strong red lip color adds to this look and it’s a shame that the effect of the Manolo Blahnik pumps is lost in this shot as they blend into the red carpet. Diane Kruger’s new show The Bridge debuts on July 10 and as I have mentioned previously this is one of my most anticipated summer shows. Kruger took to the stage with co-star Demián Bichir to present at the awards.

Hollywood Reporter’s 2013 Comedy Showrunner Roundtable

11 Jun

The Emmy nominations will be announced on July 18 and so the roundtables featuring potential recipients continue. While there are too many to cover here at TV Ate My Wardrobe we want to focus on the ones that provoke both entertaining and interesting discussions and the comedy showrunner table has done just this. This Hollywood Reporter panel includes both network and cable faces; Mike Schur (Parks and Recreation), Greg Daniels (The Office), Liz Meriwether (New Girl), Steve Molaro (The Big Bang Theory), Matthew Carnahan (House of Lies) and Bruce Helford (Anger Management).

RROSALES_THR_COMEDY_SHOWRUNNERS_0225_base_a_p

A large portion of the conversation focuses on the evolving business model of television and how the ratings system still hasn’t caught up with the way that audiences consume their favorite shows (it is mentioned several times that New Girl is a big DVR ratings performer). They discuss past and present success stories on network television with Seinfeld as an example of a show that didn’t fit the broad cookie cutter type sitcom and while most of the shows represented have relatively low numbers, Steve Molaro is the showrunner on The Big Bang Theory which is the highest rated sitcom at the moment. NBC has been the focus of a lot of the sitcom ratings think pieces because it used to be the sitcom powerhouse and now it languishes behind everyone else. Mike Schur makes the point that cable networks have a specific brand and can tailor their programming to this, whereas networks have a responsibility to have broad appeal.

Schur also points out that there is too much to watch “I’m going to die from starvation because I have too much TV to watch! Wherever you are in the world, and whatever kind of person you are, there’s 50 shows that are great for you.” This echoes what Alan Sepinwall said in a recent piece and was a topic of discussion in a recent roundtable discussion that I took part in (and I have so many shows to catch up on with ScandalGame of Thrones and Orphan Black being just three of them).

Other topics include product placement (Liz Meriwether has regrets), studio notes and the ways they get around these, the big Nick and Jess decision (others weigh in on their experiences of ‘with they/won’t they’ couples) and how the dramatic aspects of half hour shows make award classification a tricky task.

Watch the full roundtable below and for anyone who is interested in how the creative departments deal with the business side it’s totally worth it.

Girls and Downton Abbey Win at the Glamour Awards

5 Jun

The UK Glamour Magazine Awards were held at Berkeley Square Gardens in Mayfair, London last night. A host of stars attended the event that honored women in TV, film, fashion and music. So who were the big winners?

Chris O'Dowd Rashida Jones

Chris O’Dowd was on hand to present Parks and Recreation star Rashida Jones with the Film Maker of the Year award for Celeste and Jesse Forever (which was one of my favorite films from last year and is currently in my DVD player). In her acceptance speech Jones explains her outfit saying “I wore these pajamas through the entire year since I made my movie.” Jones then followed this up with “I would like to thank Jo Elvin and GLAMOUR for recognising my filmmaking… It’s very fitting for me to be winning an award that is so glamorous, because as everyone knows, it’s very glamorous making an independent movie.” As with Sofia Coppola’s pajama choice at the Met Gala I salute this look; the silk floral Erdem two-piece suits the relaxed atmosphere of these awards. Also Chris O’Dowd is super tall.

Joanne Frogatt Zosia Mamet

The TV Actress category is split into International and UK meaning that two of the most talked about shows received these accolades. Zosia Mamet took home the International prize for her role as Shoshanna on GirlsGirls has received a lot of accolades in the past year but this is the first individual award for Mamet.

Matthew Rhys presented this award and Mamet thanked the UK “for embracing Girls as much as the US has.” Wearing a black Preen dress with floral embroidery Mamet looked very happy posing with her Glamour statue, which isn’t always the case for Mamet on the red carpet. Mamet has been popular with Glamour magazine as she also recently took part in their “These Girls” event in New York.

One show that is just as popular on both sides of the Atlantic is Downton Abbey and so it isn’t surprising that an actress from this show scooped the UK prize. Joanne Froggatt who plays Anna, the head housemaid received this award from fellow Downton Abbey co-star Allen Leech. Froggatt thanked the magazine readers for voting for her adding that is has “made me very, very happy”

Rebel Wilson

It’s been a good year for Rebel Wilson as she has taken the film world by storm with roles in Pitch Perfect and Pain & Gain, as well as hosting the MTV Movie Awards. Wilson will be making the transition to TV in the fall with her ABC show Super Fun Night. Wilson is also the cover star of the new issue of Glamour and she tweeted a photo of it; Wilson is wearing a whole lot of jewels and bubbles and not much else in the shot. Wilson gave fellow Aussie Kylie Minogue a shout out in her speech “Thank you so much Kylie, I just feel so lucky, lucky, lucky, lucky.”

Clare Balding Joan Collins

Presenter of the Year could only really go to one woman and that is the extraordinary Clare Balding after collecting a special award from BAFTA last month. Balding was the highlight of the presenting team at the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and in her speech she mentioned an important current political moment “While here at dinner tonight …the House of Lords voted 2-1 in favour of supporting the equal marriage bill… Joan Collins, who was sitting on my table, asked me when me and Alice (Arnold) are going to get married. Alice said in three years, which I didn’t know but apparently that’s right.” Congratulations Clare!

Kerry Washington and Ellie Kemper at the CFDA Awards

4 Jun

Last night at the Lincoln Center in New York all the big names in fashion gathered for the 2013 CFDA Fashion Awards and they were joined by the models and actresses who wear their gowns on the red carpet. This included Kerry Washington who presented Proenza Schouler designers Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez with the Womenswear Designer of the Year award and Washington looked stunning in a bold yellow Jason Wu gown (the big color of the season). Washington opted for simple hair and makeup to compliment the strong hue of the dress and the wooden clutch is the perfect addition.

Kerry Washington CFDAMy favorite look of the night comes from The Office’s Ellie Kemper in a black Naeem Khan dress with gold starburst embroidery. Pairing this dress with a gold accessories including Rupert Sanderson heels and JustFab clutch could be too matchy matchy, but because they aren’t all the same shade of gold it works. Like Washington, Kemper’s hair is simple and but she works both a strong lip color and bold earrings that create a balance for this look.

photo (3)In the recent comedy issue of GQ magazine Ellie Kemper wrote a satirical piece asking “Can Men Be Funny?” This is in response to the many think pieces over the years asking the same question about women. It includes such wonderful lines as this “Guys, do you want to know a secret? You don’t have to be funny in order to attract us. Believe us, between your scalps and your calves, you’ve already got us. Your narrow, decrescendoing hips, and your soft, very hairy thighs leave us breathless. The truth is, there is no evolutionary cause for you to have to be funny.” It’s obviously a very tongue-in-cheek essay (though some in the comments don’t seem to realize this) and I’m glad that a publication like GQ included it, despite some of the reactions. The “are women funny?” debate is as tired as the “can women have it all?” discussion and pieces like this show how ridiculous that question is.

In the Office series finale Kemper wore one of my favorite dresses of this TV season (and somehow it hasn’t featured on “Look of the Week”) at Dwight and Angela’s wedding. It’s a Ted Baker London floral ‘Wallpaper’ Pleated A-Line Dress and can be seen in this behind the scenes shot.

1368792802_the-office-441I’m really looking forward to see what Kemper does in her post-Office roles, I expect we might see her guest starring on The Mindy Project again but I hope she gets roles beyond the ‘funny best friend’ or the girlfriend who only has 5 lines in an Owen Wilson/Vince Vaughn comedy (though I fear this might be what happens). If we can get some more Subtle Sexuality then I would be more than pleased, maybe with a Taylor Swift twist as with their last outing “The Girl Next Door.”

BAFTA Television Awards 2013

13 May

Last night at London’s Southbank Centre the 2013 BAFTA television awards took place and the best of British television (and Made in Chelsea) was celebrated.

Olivia Colman with two TV Baftas

The incredible Olivia Colman took home two awards for very different roles; Best Supporting Actress for Jimmy McGovern’s Accused and Best Female in a Comedy Programme for the Olympic satire Twenty Twelve. Colman is an incredibly versatile actress showing that she can excel in both comedy and drama and I’m glad to see her honored for both of these roles. Colman dedicated one of these awards to co-star Anne Marie Duff coming up with a wonderful hybrid name for them “Annmoliviacolmuff.” Coleman looked stunning in an aubergine Vivienne Westwood gown as she collected both awards.

In the other drama categories Shakespeare was a big hit with The Hour’s Ben Whishaw winning for his portrayal of Richard II and Simon Russell Beale won in the supporting category for playing Falstaff in Henry IV Part 2. Whishaw spoke backstage to the BBC about the positive reception to this venture and why Shakespeare is still important to a wide audience “Of course he didn’t write plays for a few people – he was writing for mass audience, so I think it’s very important that television touches on all the great literature in the world.”

Sienna Miller

A couple of surprises include both of the HBO/BBC joint ventures Parade’s End and The Girl going home with nothing. Sienna Miller showed once again that she can work a red carpet (after being one of the only actresses to truly get the punk theme at last week’s Met Gala) in a Matthew Williamson mint green dress that reflects the era and her role as Tippi Hedren in The Girl. Miller might not have won the big prize but she did win in the fashion stakes.

The Best International category has been dominated by Danish shows over the past few years with both the excellent Borgen and Forbrydelsen taking home the big prize. The Bridge couldn’t recapture the Scandinavian magic and this year saw Girls beat out Homeland and Game of ThronesGame of Thrones still managed to scoop a prize as it won the public voted Radio Times Audience Award.

Clare Balding

The Special Award of the night went to Clare Balding; Olympic and Paralympic presenter and all round amazing woman. Balding’s speech touched upon everything that made 2012 such a special year and I can’t think of anyone else more deserving.
