Out of the Box: Look of the Week

4 Apr

PaleyFest is over and we’re keeping a focus on red carpet events with this edition of Out of the Box as a How I Met Your Mother star balances the series finale week with the release of Captain America: The Winter SoldierMad Men has its seventh season premiere and Rashida Jones celebrates a new writing venture.

Cobie Smulders Captain AmericaCobie Smulders looks like she knows how pissed off you are about the How I Met Your Mother finale at the Captain America premiere and putting aside all those feelings momentarily – I’m a very casual viewer and I’m annoyed by that ending – to bask in this fantastic red carpet look. The navy blue asymmetrical Sportmax gown throws in peplum and plunge detail that together look super elegant. Almost bonus points for the fantastic clutch and earrings, losing those points as she could do with another accessory or two. Smulders nails the role of Maria Hill once again and this Captain America sequel lets the female characters be good at their jobs, in appropriate non cleavy costuming and they don’t fall down the ‘damsel in distress’ incredibly lazy trope. All of these things made me very happy indeed, more of this please Marvel.

Mad Men castAs with the four women of Mad Men featured last week – this time Jon Hamm and January Jones enter the mix – there are many different style choices on display and I kinda love all of them. Kiernan Shipka continues to be on point and age appropriate in a metallic floral long sleeved, but super funky Nina Ricci frock. Also working the metallic angle is Christina Hendricks in a Wes Gordon silver skirt, paired to perfection with a simple but elegant black blouse.

The current and former Mrs Draper, Jessica Paré and January Jones are working the fashion forward angle; Paré rocking Antonio Berardi which for some reason made me think of the kind of gown Johanna in Catching Fire would have preferred to symbolize a tree. Jones is in Roksanda Ilincic and the bold gold belting detail brings it all together, not so sure about the side braid for this event. It’s a softer look for Jones who has a habit of going severe on the red carpet; maybe she’s less intense when it’s a Mad Men event rather than an awards show.

Elisabeth Moss has opted for an Alexander McQueen skirt with a super high daring thigh slit and while she looks pretty rock and roll, swapping the dramatically dark eyes for red lip color would really set this look alight. Jon Hamm’s blue suit makes a change from the influx of grey that has been dominating red carpets recently, but the women are the ones who stand out. This cast is still one of the best dressed and I can’t wait for all the costuming treats this year as we head into polyester and clashing patterns territory.

Rashida JonesRashida Jones is at event celebrating her new column for Glamour magazine (she is one busy lady) and this Adeam dress perfectly straddles the party/professional line. The shell pattern adds whimsy to the look and the silver heels help make this outfit pop, as does the dash of pink lipstick.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

6 Dec

‘Tis the season for all of those end of year musings and the start of the many award shows between now and the Oscars. “Out of the Box” is taking a look at the red carpet offerings from this week, in what I should imagine will be the first of many award show fashion posts in the coming months. While I might normally moan about the absence of color, as it’s heading towards the holiday season the variety of twists on the LBD is more than acceptable.

Gotham Awards

There is so much to say about this group shot from the Gotham Independent Film Awards and bullet points seem like the best way forward:

  • Michael B. Jordan has been killing it on the red carpet all year and I’m so happy to see him getting so much recognition; he picked up Breakthrough Actor for Fruitvale Station at this awards show.
  • Rashida Jones has filmed her last Parks and Recreation episode which is giving me all the Leslie and Ann related sads, but yay for real life friendship.
  • Also Amy Poehler looks stunning in a leather shouldered Catherine Deane dress. And yes I’m totally digging her real life romance with Nick Kroll who hosted the Gotham Awards. Will ‘The Douche’ make an appearance this season?
  • Oh hey, Jordan Catalano’s hair is super long and I kind of like it. While my teen crush on Jared Leto has all but gone I am looking forward to seeing Dallas Buyers Club and the inevitable reunion with Claire Danes at the Golden Globes. This needs to happen.

Zosia MametAt the same event Girls star Zosia Mamet looks super cute in a Rebecca Minkoff black mini jersey dress. Mamet’s red carpet face tends to give off an air of boredom, not on this occasion where she looks super smiley and comfortable. I’m also very much in love with her chunky buckled black shoes and while I don’t tend to be a heel wearer, I’m definitely coveting this pair.

Clemence Posey

This is how you do winter floral and The Tunnel star Clémence Poésy accompanies designer Erdem to the British Fashion Awards – he picked up the Red Carpet Award – and Poésy shows just why he won, as she’s rocking an Erdem creation. While I haven’t been loving the sheer trend overall (see every Dior gown Jennifer Lawrence wore for the Catching Fire press tour), Erdem has used this technique well and one of my favorite looks at the Met Gala earlier this year was Lena Dunham in Erdem.

Julianna Margulies

It’s been a big week for Julianna Margulies as The Good Wife celebrated 100 episodes and she looks stunning in Pamella Roland at the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation Gala dinner. The contrasting element of the crisscross bodice with the full skirt (with bonus pockets!) is elegant and adds fun twist on the monochrome trend that has been big this year. I’d maybe like to see a crimson lip tone, but other than that this is a great look for the Good Wife star.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

13 Sep

New York Fashion Week came to a close yesterday (the madness continues today with London Fashion Week kicking off) and so this edition of “Out of the Box” is a front row special.

Ashley

Ashley Madekwe might be exiting Revenge in the season 3 premiere, but she has been doing the fashion show rounds. Madekwe has been running her own style blog for the past 5 years and so her presence at multiple shows doesn’t feel forced or contrived. Out of all the many stunning outfits that Madekwe wore this week, this super pretty bronze/gold beaded dress at Saturday’s Monique Lhuillier show is my favorite. Avoiding the pitfalls of ruining a good dress with too many accessories, Madekwe has also gone for a fresh faced look and it’s stunning.

Allison Williams and Zosia Mamet

Girls co-stars Allison Williams and Zosia Mamet have very different styles and at the Prabal Gurung you can see this in action – Williams is all about the classic and Mamet tends to opt for a variety of looks that sometimes fail to hit the mark. Not so at the Prabal Gurung show where she looks relaxed and stylish. Both are in monochrome – they’re somewhat power clashing but it works and the pop of color on Mamet’s floral top is eye catching. Mamet also looks like she wants to be there, a change from her standard red carpet pose that tends to suggest otherwise.

Kerry Washington Project Runway NYFW

Kerry Washington took a break from filming season 3 of Scandal to perform judging duties at the Project Runway finale fashion show. This is Washington’s third time judging on the show (first for the final) and she looks delightful in this floral Stella McCartney frock. Washington recently wore another fun and flirty Stella McCartney dress at the recent Teen Choice Awards.

Michelle Dockery NYFWMichelle Dockery’s cerulean blue* flared mid-length skirt and beautiful Peter Pan-collar blouse is both stunning and demure at the Carolina Herrera show on Monday and she looks every bit the English Rose. The dahlia bloom print on the shirt is an interesting twist on the many floral interpretations that we have seen this week on both the runway and front row.

*Hard not to think about The X-Files episode “Pusher” when this color is mentioned

Taylor Momsen and Kelly Rutherford

Who knew I was missing Gossip Girl this much that I would not only Fantasy Costume Blair Waldorf but also get excited to see some of the cast reuniting?! It’s as big a surprise to me as anyone, but it was good to see Kelly Rutherford and Taylor Momsen posing together backstage at the Alice + Olivia show. Momsen’s hemline and makeup are not as extreme as we are used to and Rutherford also opted for an above the knee black dress. While Momsen looks as surly as Jenny Humphrey in this shot apparently she was all smiles at the show.

Rashida Jones Opening Ceremony

Rashida Jones rocks a quilted sleeveless floral embroidered top at the Opening Ceremony show and pairs it with a skirt that I wish was currently in my own wardrobe. This is a double pattern success and bonus points are given for a great shade of lipstick. Also is crushed velvet making a comeback? This really must be a 90s revival of the highest order (see the woman in the background).

Rashida Jones for Band of Outsiders

21 Aug

Rashida Jones hasn’t left Parks and Recreation yet, but she’s already notching up projects outside of Pawnee. It’s become a family affair as she is modelling with sister Kidada Jones for Boy. by Band of Outsiders and The Hollywood Reporter revealed yesterday that the pair has been developing a show together for The CW.

Rashida Jones Band of Outsiders

Designer Scott Sternberg shot the sisters at The Dresden in LA using a Polaroid camera; the trademark of celebrity campaigns for Band of Outsiders (others include Greta Gerwig, Michelle Williams and Jason Schwartzman).  The Fall ’13 collection includes sweater turbans, which I can’t see becoming a thing outside of photo shoots and runway, but hey skorts came back so anything can happen. So far only three images have been released with more coming throughout the week on the brands Tumblr page.

Rashida Jones solo Band of Outsiders

The project Rashida and Kidada Jones have been working on is part of the two-year production deal that Rashida Jones has with Warner Bros. Television and per The Hollywood Reporter is now called Ladyballs (previously The Revengers which might get confused with Revenge). It’s an hour-long dramedy about two former friends who are reunited when they discover they are dating the same guy. Set in New York City, the pair realize after their revenge scheme goes viral that there is much money to be made with this type of business in the city. This sounds like something I would watch and even though it’s still in development I’m already thinking they should pair it with The Carrie Diaries.

Kidada Jones Band of Outsiders

It is the second project that Jones has sold with writing partner Will McCormack this summer (the other is a comedy called Stuck) and so a post Parks slump is highly unlikely.

No More Leslie and Ann Dance Parties on Parks and Recreation

1 Aug

They haven’t moved to the town from Footloose, instead Buzzfeed broke the news yesterday that Rashida Jones and Rob Lowe are leaving Parks and Recreation. This double exit will take place after the 13th episode of the forthcoming sixth season. Reaction to this was mixed (well at least on my Twitter feed it was) ranging from cries of “Nooooooooo,” a repeated use of the word LITERALLY and others suggesting it will rejuvenate the show. I stand somewhere in the middle as both performers are fantastic to watch but in a show that can feel crowded at times, they get the short shrift in character development and plot.  After spotting an old ad for the Rob Lowe show Lyon’s Den I had a conversation with fellow This Was TV colleague Noel Kirkpatrick yesterday afternoon, this was before the news broke and we discussed Lowe’s role in an ensemble after his previous exit from The West Wing. A complete coincidence of course, or we might have jinxed it.

Rob Lowe Rashida Jones Parks and Recreation

Chris and Ann have both suffered on the show with how their characters sometimes fit in to the overall narrative; Ann has often just been there as “the girlfriend” (which they seemed to acknowledge with the whole dating herself storyline last season) and Chris has a lot of funny quirks but not much else (his therapy sessions attempted to broaden his character). Quite often they are there to service other characters and while they are both funny they have a habit of getting lost in the ensemble in terms of development beyond jokes. This is clear in how they both provide important stability in their friendships to both Leslie and Ben. The Leslie/Ann dynamic is one of my favorites on the show and great female friendships can be hard to find on TV. I’m sure Leslie will be supportive of Ann’s decision, however I don’t think we can rule out a plan to sabotage Ann’s Pawnee exit. The projected leaving date is around February and could tie in with one last epic Galantine’s Day.

It’s too early to speculate exactly how they will leave, but their story is currently tied together as Ann and Chris are trying to have a baby together. Rashida Jones has a deal with her Jesse and Celeste Forever writing partner Will McCormack for Warner Bros. Television and this movie was a highlight last year, so I am excited for what they will produce next. This could be better suited to Jones’ talents and a show where she gets to be the star is something I am very much for. Rob Lowe has been involved in other projects recently including Behind the Candelabra and the upcoming Killing Kennedy. If this means we can get a Dr Startz spinoff then it will make it all worth it (hey I can dream).

Here is the Leslie/Ann dance party scene from last season that is one of my favorites, I’m sure they will squeeze in a lot more in the next 13 episodes.

Girls and Downton Abbey Win at the Glamour Awards

5 Jun

The UK Glamour Magazine Awards were held at Berkeley Square Gardens in Mayfair, London last night. A host of stars attended the event that honored women in TV, film, fashion and music. So who were the big winners?

Chris O'Dowd Rashida Jones

Chris O’Dowd was on hand to present Parks and Recreation star Rashida Jones with the Film Maker of the Year award for Celeste and Jesse Forever (which was one of my favorite films from last year and is currently in my DVD player). In her acceptance speech Jones explains her outfit saying “I wore these pajamas through the entire year since I made my movie.” Jones then followed this up with “I would like to thank Jo Elvin and GLAMOUR for recognising my filmmaking… It’s very fitting for me to be winning an award that is so glamorous, because as everyone knows, it’s very glamorous making an independent movie.” As with Sofia Coppola’s pajama choice at the Met Gala I salute this look; the silk floral Erdem two-piece suits the relaxed atmosphere of these awards. Also Chris O’Dowd is super tall.

Joanne Frogatt Zosia Mamet

The TV Actress category is split into International and UK meaning that two of the most talked about shows received these accolades. Zosia Mamet took home the International prize for her role as Shoshanna on GirlsGirls has received a lot of accolades in the past year but this is the first individual award for Mamet.

Matthew Rhys presented this award and Mamet thanked the UK “for embracing Girls as much as the US has.” Wearing a black Preen dress with floral embroidery Mamet looked very happy posing with her Glamour statue, which isn’t always the case for Mamet on the red carpet. Mamet has been popular with Glamour magazine as she also recently took part in their “These Girls” event in New York.

One show that is just as popular on both sides of the Atlantic is Downton Abbey and so it isn’t surprising that an actress from this show scooped the UK prize. Joanne Froggatt who plays Anna, the head housemaid received this award from fellow Downton Abbey co-star Allen Leech. Froggatt thanked the magazine readers for voting for her adding that is has “made me very, very happy”

Rebel Wilson

It’s been a good year for Rebel Wilson as she has taken the film world by storm with roles in Pitch Perfect and Pain & Gain, as well as hosting the MTV Movie Awards. Wilson will be making the transition to TV in the fall with her ABC show Super Fun Night. Wilson is also the cover star of the new issue of Glamour and she tweeted a photo of it; Wilson is wearing a whole lot of jewels and bubbles and not much else in the shot. Wilson gave fellow Aussie Kylie Minogue a shout out in her speech “Thank you so much Kylie, I just feel so lucky, lucky, lucky, lucky.”

Clare Balding Joan Collins

Presenter of the Year could only really go to one woman and that is the extraordinary Clare Balding after collecting a special award from BAFTA last month. Balding was the highlight of the presenting team at the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and in her speech she mentioned an important current political moment “While here at dinner tonight …the House of Lords voted 2-1 in favour of supporting the equal marriage bill… Joan Collins, who was sitting on my table, asked me when me and Alice (Arnold) are going to get married. Alice said in three years, which I didn’t know but apparently that’s right.” Congratulations Clare!
