Girls Season 3 Premiere Red Carpet

7 Jan

It’s a big week for the cast of Girls as they promote their third season which airs this Sunday and on the same night they will be heading to the Golden Globes as both the show and Lena Dunham have been nominated. There are multiple magazine covers for Allison Williams (including Elle), chat show appearances and the red carpet of their big premiere event. While Jemima Kirke tends to avoid most of the media hoopla she joined castmates Lena Dunham, Allison Williams and Zosia Mamet at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York last night.

Girls Season 3 premiereLet’s break down the looks.

Jemima Kirke’s boho styling has been injected with some old school Hollywood glamour and this satin champagne coloured gown is giving me Courtney Love flashbacks. The tagline for season 3 is “Happily Whatever After” and Lena Dunham’s silver crystal embroidered Rochas Spring 2014 frock is giving off sparkly princess vibes. Dunham’s smoky eyes and slick hairstyle stops it from entering sickly, treacly territory. There is always something slightly awkward about Lena Dunham on the red carpet and while the cut of the dress isn’t perfect, it’s also one of the best outfit choices we’ve seen on her so far.

Moving on from the long to the short dresses and after stepping out of her comfort zone Allison Williams is looking positively Allison Williams in this super cute baby blue Dior; the floral appliqués detail on the bodice is really beautiful touch. As with the Girls poster, there’s a different interpretation of the pretty dress theme and Williams is the most conventional of the group. Shoshanna tends to favor pink, but Zosia Mamet is all about the LBD and who wouldn’t be when it’s Saint Laurent?! While there’s nothing particularly innovative to yell about with this choice, the gold shoes and bracelets are the perfect extras to turn an eh outfit into a winner.

Variety “Power of Women” Red Carpet

7 Oct

Variety’s fifth annual Power of Women luncheon was held on Friday and honored 7 women who have used their star power for philanthropic work and after Amy Poehler delivered an important message about her work with Worldwide Orphans (that you can watch at the bottom) she joked that “Thank you to all the bossy, right amount of crazy women in this room. Giving to charity is good for your skin and makes your ass smaller.”

Power of Women group photo

Aisha Tyler hosted the event and the recipients as you can see in the photo above are Jennifer Hudson, Elizabeth Banks, the aforementioned Amy Poehler, Charlize Theron, Kerry Washington, Amy Pascal and Nicole Kidman. This is an impressive group of women and you can find about their charity work here.

Turning over to the red carpet at this luncheon and it’s good to see an array of styles and colors among the honorees with host Aisha Tyler working the neon pink to maximum effect. After a week of many public appearances and some dubious dress choices (the big gingham number springs to mind) Kerry Washington wore a Vince Camuto cocktail dress that reminds us why she is top of the best dressed lists. The gold polka dots are an instant favorite here and studded Christian Louboutin ‘Malabar Hill’ pumps add an extra bit of flare to the outfit. Elizabeth Banks also looks stunning in this red Dolce & Gabbana top and skirt with lace detail. I’m so excited about what Elizabeth Banks will be bringing to the huge Hunger Games press tour next month and all things Effie related. I could however, do without the nude Louboutin’s that she is wearing at this luncheon.

Kerry Washington and Elizabeth Banks

Some of the cast of Scandal were on hand to support Kerry Washington and Darby Stanchfield’s super pretty Valentino pastel graphic floral design is my favorite outfit from this luncheon. Stanchfield has been on crazy good form with her red carpet choices recently and her new look on the season 3 premiere of Scandal is definitely giving me some red hair envy.

Amy Poehler looks great in this teal long sleeved Beckley by Melissa with Worldwide Orphan founder Dr. Jane Aronson, who Poehler first met in 2009 at a Glamour magazine Woman of the Year event. You can watch a video of Amy Poehler talking about this cause, how great TV is at the moment as well as part of her speech. Did it suddenly get dusty in here?

Diane Kruger: Street Style and a Night at the Opera

26 Sep

Diane Kruger is a TV Ate My Wardrobe favorite and this week she shows off great street style and an incredible red carpet look. Kruger has reason to celebrate as FX renewed The Bridge for a second season and while the show hit some bumpy steps with the overall serial killer plot, the central relationship between Kruger’s Sonya Cross and Marco (Demián Bichir) has been brilliant throughout.

Now to the fashion and first up is Diane Kruger in Prabal Gurung at the Metropolitan Opera Season Opening on Monday. This is a whole lot of dress but as we’ve seen on countless occasions Kruger brings her A game to events like this and she never sticks to one style of gown. With a dress this fanciful she has dialed back on all accessories and opted for minimal makeup and a simple updo. The white pumps could be considered too bridal but as they mirror the top panel of the dress I’d say they work. The pocket detail is always a favorite of mine, both on the red carpet and with the dresses that I tend to wear – sadly there is nothing like this hanging in my wardrobe.

Diane Krugar Met Opera

After a big fancy pants event it’s all about dressing down the next day and Kruger did just this as she hit Bergdorf Goodman. This is why she is a constant fixture on “Best Dressed” lists because you know that however great Diane Kruger looks for premieres, her street style is effortlessly chic. Wearing a pair of purple pants, 3.1 Phillip Lim flats, black blazer and black top this is the perfect shopping outfit. There’s also the matter of the trusty Hermès shoulder bag and while an item like this is perhaps a tad out of my price range this is an easy outfit to recreate.

The pink lipstick is a nice touch and it’s a slightly darker shade than the one I have been experimenting with over the summer.

Emmys 2013: Red Carpet Highlights

23 Sep

It’s a busy day of fashion and TV thanks to last night’s Emmys (for my brief thoughts on the show head here) and while monochrome was a big trend, bold color and the standard nude tones were also big players on the red carpet. This post is for those dresses that don’t fall into one easy category and this post features a couple of dresses that still has me pondering whether they’re a hit or miss.

Let’s get to it!

Zooey Deschanel Emmys

Zooey Deschanel has a habit of wearing princess type gowns with a 1950s influence so this Barbarella looking icy blue J. Mendel number is a huge surprise. You can’t see it in this photo but the dress had a huge sexy slit up one leg and I’m so glad to see Deschanel opting for something outside of her standard wheelhouse. She looks amazing which almost makes up for the lack of New Girl nominations. Almost.

Kiernan Shipka 2013 emmys

Kiernan Shipka continues to impress with her age appropriate red carpet looks and this floral Delpozo frock is perfect for the 13-year-old; yes at 13 Shipka has already outshone every good fashion moment I have ever had. This dress could come across as too fussy which is why the ponytail/minimal makeup works and I don’t think we’re ready for Shipka to go for the Taylor Momsen raccoon eyes approach – now or ever.

Kerry Washington Emmys 2013

Kerry Washington was top of my red carpet most anticipated list and I’m disappointed with the Marchesa gown. I’m still not entirely sure how I feel about it and while I like the floral embellishments, it’s also reading wedding gown. I think if my expectations weren’t so high I would like this fine, but considering all of the other exquisite dresses she has worn this year it doesn’t quite hit the mark. It does fall into the Olivia Pope color scheme though and as always she looks flawless. It’s just not the dress I was hoping for.

Claire Danes emmys

Following closely behind Kerry Washington on that anticipated list, was Claire Danes and this is another dress that had me wrinkling my nose in disappointment, especially after what she wore last year. I’m not a huge fan of blush tone gowns which might be why I’m finding it hard to get excited about either of these dresses and with Danes this Armani Privé number washes her out. I do like the change in hairstyle and her makeup is also a win, more accessorizes would help.

[Source]

Danes does get red carpet legend status for crashing Lena Dunham’s E! interview and chatting about her Scandal obsession with the Girls star. A Romeo and Juliet reference was also thrown in regarding their Showtime/HBO standing; this has me reaching for those angel wings I’ve been holding onto for a Romeo + Juliet revival.

Christina Hendricks Emmys

Christina Hendricks doesn’t always get it right on the red carpet and designers inexplicably seem to have a hard time with her body shape, not so with Christian Siriano who always hits the mark with Hendricks. Hendricks described this gown as looking like a Sargent painting, a reference that was lost on Seacrest (Twitter quickly deduced that Madame X is the painting). Incredible from H to T (yeah I’ve been watching too much Top Model).

65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards - ArrivalsMindy Kaling’s eggplant colored Edition by Georges Chakra dress is not the sparkly number that you might expect from Kaling and as with Deschanel I like this change up. Hair and makeup are understated and because of the embellished neckline accessorize beyond a cute clutch aren’t needed.

Carrie Preston Emmy 2013

Carrie Preston won an Emmy last weekend for her guest starring work on The Good Wife and she shone on the red carpet in this pale pink Romona Keveza gown with a touch of black detail. Preston’s incredible auburn locks instantly make her standout and this is another winning look.

Emmys 2013 Red Carpet: The Best of the Monochromes

23 Sep

Last night the 65th Primetime Emmy Awards took place in Los Angeles and the show was a mixed bag featuring unnecessary extended musical numbers, winners both predictable and surprising, a seemingly random dedication to 1963 and a band that played the winners off in record time (apparently a performance by Elton John is more important than the actual awards themselves). The direction felt all over the place and if it wasn’t for Tina Fey and Amy Poehler the awards opener would have been a huge dud (please host the Golden Globes again).

Luckily the fashion on the red carpet wasn’t such a shambles and first up is the women who are rocking the big monochromatic trend.

Anna Gunn Emmys 2013

Anna Gunn won the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a drama category; a well deserved winner for that walk of despair into the swimming pool and her subsequent breakdown on the first half of Breaking Bad’s final season. Wearing Romona Keveza, Gunn looks stunning in a dress that is simple and elegant.

Merritt Wever Emmys

Merritt Wever! Another winner and not just for Nurse Jackie as she gave the best speech of the night that got straight to the point “Thank you so much! I’ve gotta go, bye.” While Wever doesn’t look all that convinced in the above photo, I think she looks incredible and I’m so happy that she won. Bonus points for an amazing lip color choice and for being generally awesome. It’s already been said on here countless times but can Elizabeth stay on New Girl please?

Elisabeth Moss Emmys

Breaking the “if you wear a monochromatic dress you will win” cycle is Elisabeth Moss and I’m pretty bummed out that both Top of the Lake and Mad Men went home with nothing. Moss is a vision in Andrew Gn and her blonde choppy cut continues to serve her well as this awards cycle is the best we’ve seen Moss yet. As with Wever, Moss has opted for a bold red lip color and is the key to setting off a great black and white ensemble.

Morgan Saylor Emmys

Now to one of the younger stars of the red carpet and Homeland’s Morgan Saylor; this Honor gown is perfect for an 18 year old as it’s not too prom but it also doesn’t age her up to 30. One thing I would change is her hair as it looks a little too casual for an event like this, nicely played with the red lips and makeup that isn’t too severe though. I’m hoping that season 3 of Homeland will give her a story that is less Kim Bauer like, she’s a really great young actress and I don’t want her bogged down in contrived melodrama.

Julianna Margulies Emmy 2013

Julianna Margulies was on hand to present because somehow she wasn’t nominated for The Good Wife and so this Reed Krakoff dress is a little more on the relaxed side. Yes it resembles a fancy bed sheet, but sometimes this can work too and maybe I’m just very excited by the return of The Good Wife next Sunday – yes on the same night as the Breaking Bad finale – but I think she looks fantastic.

Kerry Washington Tops Vanity Fair’s Best Dressed List

1 Aug

Kerry Washington is the cover star of the August issue of Vanity Fair and she also features in the new September issue of the magazine as she tops their International Best-Dressed Poll. Taking over from last year’s winner Kate Middleton (who has probably been occupied with other matters recently), Washington continues to have an excellent 2013 as she is taking both the acting and fashion world by storm. Olivia Pope has helped raise Washington’s profile as Scandal has become one of the most talked about shows thanks to the fast-paced plotting, twists, strong performances and the incredible costuming. It helps that Washington’s style on the red carpet is just as striking as it is on Scandal; sometimes opting for the Olivia Pope monochromatic look and also embracing bold and bright colors that Olivia’s wardrobe does not feature.

Here are a few of my favorite red carpet appearances by Kerry Washington this year and as you can see she likes to take risks with color, patterns and style. The Michael Kors yellow train dress from the 2013 MTV Movie Awards might not be to everyone’s tastes but I think it’s the right side of daring fashion and Washington pulls it off without looking overwhelmed by it.

The Bridge Red Carpet: Diane Kruger’s Sheer Dream

9 Jul

New FX drama The Bridge debuts tomorrow night (July 10) and Diane Kruger looks stunning on the red carpet in LA yesterday in a sheer green, black and grey Jonathan Saunders gown (accompanied by the always wonderful Joshua Jackson – someone give him a show please).

Diane Kruger The Bridge Premiere

Kruger is playing Detective Sonya Cross, a member of the El Paso Police Department and she has to team up with Marco Ruiz (played by Demián Bichir), a Mexican officer after a body is found on either side of the border. The Bridge is an adaptation of Broen; a Danish/Swedish venture and one of my favorite shows of last year with Saga Noren (the Sonya Cross of Broen) following in the footsteps of the female leads of Borgen and Forbrydelsen as they are some of the best written and most interesting female characters on TV. So while I will try to spare you from too many comparisons between the two and despite having been burnt before with an adaptation of a Scandinavian project, I am cautiously optimistic for this version. Kruger’s character Cross has Asperger’s syndrome (this isn’t explicitly labelled in either Broen or The Bridge but it is clear that Saga and Sonya are on the spectrum) and this is one of the many challenges that will complicate her relationship with Ruiz.

Recently Diane Kruger spoke about her decision to do this TV project saying “From Mad Men, to Homeland, to Robin Wright in House of Cards, those female parts are so well-written and unafraid. It seems to me that they thrive and the audiences are looking for characters like that. It’s very exciting for women in general. I’ve never been offered an in-depth character like this in movies.” One of the benefits of TV is that you have a much longer period to develop a character versus the two and a half hours or so that you have to do it on film, so it’s not surprising that Kruger gives this as a reason. It also helps that TV is no longer seen as a step back and there are so many exciting and interesting roles on TV that appeal to those who have mostly stuck to film acting (Kruger does have an uncredited appearance in an episode of Fringe).

Are you looking forward to The Bridge?

Critics’ Choice 2013 TV Awards Red Carpet Highlights: Diane Kruger and Elisabeth Moss

11 Jun

Last night the Critics’ Choice 2013 TV Awards took place in Los Angeles at the Beverly Hilton Hotel with Parks and Recreation favorite Retta hosting the proceedings. While Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad tied in the Best Drama Series category, there is also a tie here at TV Ate My Wardrobe for best red carpet look between Elisabeth Moss who has featured multiple times in our “Look of the Week” and Diane Kruger, who will most likely become a weekly staple of this column.

elisabeth moss critics choice

The haircut that Elisabeth Moss got backstage on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon coupled with the blonde color continues to be a defining look (and I think we can put Moss in the group of women who look better with shorter hair, a group I adore). It sets her apart from the character we are so used to seeing her play, a character that has to be tough around the edges because of her job and the decade she is working in. This makes Moss look more youthful and fun, something that is missing from Peggy most of the time.

The plunging pink Valentino prom style dress suits this event and really compliments this new hairstyle. Moss has opted for toned down makeup, but I think a strong lip color would really set it off.

Elisabeth Moss took home the award for Best Actress in a Mini-Series or Movie for Top of the Lake and she joked that “I’ve never won an award for acting. I have to remember not to thank anyone from Mad Men!”

Diane Kruger critics choice red carpet

Diane Kruger is a fashion icon both on and off the red carpet because she takes chances but also has an eye for Old Hollywood glamour and this black strapless Nina Ricci gown falls into the latter camp. The sweetheart neckline evokes Jessica Rabbit and the retro inspired waves give the impression that Kruger is a 1950s starlet. The strong red lip color adds to this look and it’s a shame that the effect of the Manolo Blahnik pumps is lost in this shot as they blend into the red carpet. Diane Kruger’s new show The Bridge debuts on July 10 and as I have mentioned previously this is one of my most anticipated summer shows. Kruger took to the stage with co-star Demián Bichir to present at the awards.

Kerry Washington and Ellie Kemper at the CFDA Awards

4 Jun

Last night at the Lincoln Center in New York all the big names in fashion gathered for the 2013 CFDA Fashion Awards and they were joined by the models and actresses who wear their gowns on the red carpet. This included Kerry Washington who presented Proenza Schouler designers Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez with the Womenswear Designer of the Year award and Washington looked stunning in a bold yellow Jason Wu gown (the big color of the season). Washington opted for simple hair and makeup to compliment the strong hue of the dress and the wooden clutch is the perfect addition.

Kerry Washington CFDAMy favorite look of the night comes from The Office’s Ellie Kemper in a black Naeem Khan dress with gold starburst embroidery. Pairing this dress with a gold accessories including Rupert Sanderson heels and JustFab clutch could be too matchy matchy, but because they aren’t all the same shade of gold it works. Like Washington, Kemper’s hair is simple and but she works both a strong lip color and bold earrings that create a balance for this look.

photo (3)In the recent comedy issue of GQ magazine Ellie Kemper wrote a satirical piece asking “Can Men Be Funny?” This is in response to the many think pieces over the years asking the same question about women. It includes such wonderful lines as this “Guys, do you want to know a secret? You don’t have to be funny in order to attract us. Believe us, between your scalps and your calves, you’ve already got us. Your narrow, decrescendoing hips, and your soft, very hairy thighs leave us breathless. The truth is, there is no evolutionary cause for you to have to be funny.” It’s obviously a very tongue-in-cheek essay (though some in the comments don’t seem to realize this) and I’m glad that a publication like GQ included it, despite some of the reactions. The “are women funny?” debate is as tired as the “can women have it all?” discussion and pieces like this show how ridiculous that question is.

In the Office series finale Kemper wore one of my favorite dresses of this TV season (and somehow it hasn’t featured on “Look of the Week”) at Dwight and Angela’s wedding. It’s a Ted Baker London floral ‘Wallpaper’ Pleated A-Line Dress and can be seen in this behind the scenes shot.

1368792802_the-office-441I’m really looking forward to see what Kemper does in her post-Office roles, I expect we might see her guest starring on The Mindy Project again but I hope she gets roles beyond the ‘funny best friend’ or the girlfriend who only has 5 lines in an Owen Wilson/Vince Vaughn comedy (though I fear this might be what happens). If we can get some more Subtle Sexuality then I would be more than pleased, maybe with a Taylor Swift twist as with their last outing “The Girl Next Door.”
