Best of the 2015 Critics’ Choice Awards Red Carpet

1 Jun

TV Award season is here and to kick things off we have the Critics’ Choice Awards. Around March I get a little bit of red carpet fatigue after a long succession of award shows; now this has subsided and once again fancy frocks are what I crave. The Critics’ Choice is a fun one as it is neither full on nor is it as casual as a TCA press tour or PaleyFest.

You're the Worst Critics' ChoiceThey might have lost Best Comedy to Silicon Valley, but You’re the Worst takes home the best dressed cast award (there is no actual trophy) looking dapper as fuck. Kether Donohue goes full bombshell with Aya Cash opting for one of my favorite outfit choices in a stunning hunter green lady suit. Desmin Borges and Chris Geere scrub up rather well too and can season 2 get a premiere date, please?

Aya CashAnd because Aya Cash looks so great in this suit here is a solo shot.

Mae WhitmanA really fun studded Alice + Olivia dress for Mae Whitman which looks like either playing connect the dots with a map of the stars or a funky scientific diagram of a leaf. Either way, I love it.

Judy GreerJudy Greer carries off an awkward mid-length with aplomb in this beautiful blue print. Bonus red lipstick points at the ready.

Maggie GyllenhaalGoing full summer florals and looking stunning is Maggie Gyllenhaal.

Chelsea PerettiColor blocking in satin isn’t always easy to do, but Chelsea Peretti works it. The shoulder capping detail and additional color from the clutch equal a couple of prayer hands emojis.

Taraji P HensonTaraji P. Henson took home Best Drama Actress and while I am only 5 episodes into Empire, I am obsessed with all things Cookie. Also with Henson’s purple lip color.

Gina RodriguezMulti-textured is what I need for this much sheer to work and the bodice detail on Gina Rodriguez’s Reem Acra Couture is stunning.

Ivonne CollIt must run in the Jane the Virgin family as here is Ivonne Coll also looking super classy in a black gown.

Carrie BrownsteinPolka dot halter dress hits my sweet spot, but it is Carrie Brownstein’s gold tipped heels and red lipstick which I can’t get enough of.

Judith LightJudith Light, killing it as always.

Carrie CoonNo Best Supporting Actress for Carrie Coon (went to the equally deserving Lorraine Toussaint for OITNB); however she looks fantastic in burgundy.

Yvonne StrahovskiThere’s not much to Yvonne Strahovski column of cerulean blue, but this color is stunning on her and I am so ready to see her in wearing 60s attire in The Astronauts Wives Club.

Holly TaylorThe Americans won Best Drama (!) and Holly Taylor’s red rose infused Don O’Neill gown avoids leaning towards the overwhelming side thanks to the subtle cut outs.

Clea DuvallClea DuVall closes this red carpet (or rather blue carpet) in a green blazer and while this tips towards the too casual end of the scale this wins me over for lady suit and every 90s teen movie reasons.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

1 May

Fancy frocks aplenty at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner. Plus various other red carpet looks on this edition of Look of the Week including bold prints and the 70s influence I can’t get enough of reigns once again.

Gillian JacobsGillian Jacobs is killing it in Peter Pilotto showing why she is a resident Out of the Box member as she often leans towards daring, patterned choices like this one. Pairing this dress with black strappy platforms and super soft curls mixes retro glamour with Old Hollywood chic; Jacobs looks stunning.

Lucy LiuA beaded Naeem Khan dress for Lucy Liu and this is simple chic at its best. Red lipstick adds an extra pop and the hair down approach adds a softness to the whole ensemble.

Darby StanchfieldAs the White House Press Secretary on Scandal we’re used to seeing Darby Stanchfield standing behind a podium in various forms of business wear so it is good to see her in something a little more fancy (and with a whole lot less drama going on) and this ivory Ludmila Corlateanu gown is just that.

Troian BellisarioAlso taking a break from TV drama is Troian Bellisario from Pretty Little Liars and even though I stopped watching some time ago I still really want to know who A is. The gold belt detail enlivens this white dress and there is a dash of 70s summer cocktail party to the whole cut of it.

Juno TempleSpeaking of my favorite style decade here is Juno Temple at the Far from the Madding Crowd premiere embracing 70s print in Saint Laurent and I am reminded by both Temple and Gillian Jacobs that platform heels are the only ones that don’t break my feet. Well those and the gaudy metallic silver wedges I wore when I was 16. I probably won’t be digging those out again.

Sophie TurnerTaking a break from capes is Game of Thrones’ Sophie Turner decked out in Louis Vuitton Resort 2015 at the annual Garden Brunch in Washington DC over the weekend and as with Michelle Williams in everything Louis Vuitton I am definitely feeling the mixture of textures, patterns, buttons and zips.

Mae Whitman and Mamie GummerLady suit alert! Mae Whitman wears the appropriately titled “Boob Suit” from Rachel Antonoff at Refinery29’s digital content presentation (so much exciting stuff on their roster) looking equal parts edgy and adorable. Of course there are bonus red lipstick points and I am forever drawing hearts around her name.

Mamie Gummer does the whole effortless chic thing in skinny jeans, white tee suede boots and a coat that skirts near bathrobe territory, but manages to look super cool at the same time. Yes I would spill something down both outfits in an instant and be super sad about it.

Elisabeth MossAs with my complicated feelings about jumpsuits/rompers, the crop top is another one that falls into this category. Elisabeth Moss at the Chaplin Award Gala in Nha Khanh is the perfect amount of crop to the top with that slight sliver of torso on display (don’t get me wrong I am all for other people wearing this garment, but it terrifies me personally). This is a really pretty outfit and the graphic print/length of the skirt gives it a retro feel and still manages to avoid all Mad Men influence comparisons.

Mad Men 7.11 Peggy dressI wrote a whole thing about Peggy in the most recent episode of Mad Men but one thing I didn’t cover was how much I love this dress. Peggy’s style has been so much sharper this season and this is partly down to her growing confidence and because the new decade is hitting all her sartorial points. I would 100% wear this today.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

2 Aug

Last week it was all about Comic-Con style and this edition of “Out of the Box” looks to the panels and parties of the Television Critics Association Press Summer Tour. Current and forthcoming shows with plenty of familiar faces feature as we take a look at the big style hitters.

Winner: James Wolk at The Crazy Ones Panel

James Wolk Crazy Ones TCA

“Not great, Bob!” is still one of the best line readings of the year and James Wolk has featured several times on this list thanks to the sartorial greatness of Bob Benson on Mad Men. The Crazy Ones is also set at an ad agency and while I’m pretty lukewarm to the promos, having James Wolk as a cast member (and the bonus of Kelly Clarkson) will be enough to get me to watch the pilot. Even though it’s the height of the summer, Wolk has gone for an impressive amount of layering with shirt, hoodie and jacket and he looks pretty great in a smart/casual manner. His face is saying he’s listening intently, his slightly raised eyebrow suggests disagreement. Either way Wolk is a welcome sight.

Runner Up: Claire Danes at the Homeland Panel

Claire+Danes+2013+Summer+TCA+Tour+Day+6+AydrrD5aTWil

Claire Danes is the only one I’ve mentioned but she is not alone in this shot; Damian Lewis’ suit is lovely and if his socks were not skin tone then he’d have his name in bold too and Rupert Friend looks like he has come from a Mary Poppins audition. Danes is often one of the best dressed on the red carpet and while you can’t see all of the Thakoon lilac dandelion dress because she is sitting down; it’s elegant without looking like she is trying too hard. I think the key behind TCA dresses is a late afternoon/early evening cocktail party approach and all of the women that feature this week have got that spot on. The Christian Louboutin t-bar sandals are now on my shoe wish list.

Mae Whitman and Lauren Graham at the Parenthood Panel

Mae Whitman and Lauren Graham

Reminding me once again that I still haven’t watched Parenthood (I know) this double dash of patterned dress brilliance from Lauren Graham and Mae Whitman is making me want to get right on that. While I’m not the biggest fan of nude colored shoes they get a pass as the dresses are both on the eye-popping side. Bonus points awarded for excellent lip color.

Hannah Simone at the Fox TCA Party

Hannah Simone

While I might not have paired nude shoes – we already know how I feel about them and it’s a bit matchy matchy with a nude dress – this is a striking look from Hannah Simone thanks to the orange floral lace detail. It’s another great choice for a relaxed summer event like this where you want to look professional without resorting to floor length gowns or jeans and t-shirt. I miss New Girl and so I’m really happy to see the cast out and about again.

Runner Up: Emily Bett Rickards at the CW, CBS and Showtime TCA Party

Emily Rickards TCA

The Felicity/Diggle/Oliver team is at the heart of Arrow and hopefully this is something season will capitalize on. Emily Bett Rickards gets footwear approval as she opts for orange heels that go with this blue, flower embellished dress. This is a dress that can be dressed down with flats or dressed up in this manner with a pair of bold heals and a simple clutch.
