Best of the 2014 Met Gala – Part One

6 May

The Met Gala is a lavish affair and the decadent red carpet showcases some of the more theatrical gowns; unlike something like the Oscars this event expects daring attire that might look out of place elsewhere. Last year’s punk theme was one many struggled with, in that they looked amazing but there was nothing particularly punk on display. Couturier Charles James is celebrated this year; both at the Met Gala and at the Met’s new Costume Institute exhibition as his designs revolutionized the world of fashion. Charles James was a perfectionist and he created incredibly structured and exquisite gowns. This is how fashion designers paid homage to this work and influence.

This is part one (for part two head here) and it is a picture heavy post. Enjoy!

Lena DunhamLast year Lena Dunham looked amazing and she’s done it once again; the Met Gala is where Dunham gets it right. Mullet dresses tend to make me shudder and yet this Giambattista Valli Spring 2014 Couture is rather beautiful. The floral embroidery is exquisite and while I would have maybe added a necklace, it is dramatic enough as it is.

Janelle MonaeI can’t resist a cape even if it could double as a tapestry and Janelle Monae’s Tadashi ensemble is the kind of theatricality this event demands. Monae shows how pants can be just as eye-catching as any fancy gown and this is one of the most memorable looks of the night.

Lake BellThe next two pieces are from Tommy Hilfiger and use his signature colors of red, white and blue. Hilfiger is all about the classic approach and Lake Bell’s red gown is beautiful in its simplicity. One way to add impact is with a statement necklace and bold lip color/minimal makeup enhances Bell’s look.

Zooey DeschanelZooey Deschanel wore Tommy Hilfiger last year and it’s no surprise to see her wearing a gown made by her recent collaborator. Details I adore include the feathered shoulders, and the stunning Chanel Ruban Mademoiselle necklace. The white belt and train add the necessary drama, however her hair is giving me images of 80s volume which on this occasion is not a good thing.

Taylor SwiftTaylor Swift was one of the only attendees who managed the punk theme and she’s once again on point in this Oscar de la Renta gown (minus the cat) in a gown that takes the structured element of Charles James’ work and runs with it. The punk theme saw a style departure for Swift, whereas this is very much in her style comfort range and she looks stunning once again.

Olivia MunnNow here’s one of my favorite approaches to hair styling at the Met Gala as Olivia Munn’s gold hairpiece and loose curls complement this stunning Diane von Furstenberg yellow gown. It’s maybe a bit too cleavy for this event, however the color is stunning and the long sleeves have a way of balancing out the plunging neckline. Munn isn’t overly done up either with just an orange pop on her lips.

Emmy RossumMore color and this time a floral explosion from Emmy Rossum in Carolina Herrera. It’s a structured ball gown and one of the more overt Charles James tributes.

Jessica PareAnother play on the floral look as Jessica Paré opts for Michael Kors and monochrome. This might be a case of needing a necklace and yet I think the lack of one adds to the elegance of the look, especially as Paré’s sleek updo, bright pink lip color and super sparkly earrings add the required impact.

Michelle WilliamsMichelle Williams keeps it simple and chic in shimmery Louis Vuitton. I adore this dress and I’m glad to see a variety of frock lengths, however this dress doesn’t scream Met Gala. Still super cute though.

Leighton MeesterLeighton Meester is going all 70s boho in gold Emilio Pucci. Pulling off both the plunging neckline and high leg slit, Meester looks amazing.

Maggie Gyllenhaal capeMaggie Gyllenhaal’s Valentino dress and matching cape is going to be pretty divisive and it might be cape bias, but I think this is terrific and hey it’s the Met Gala so these more costumey pieces are more than welcome. This also has a whole 70s thing going on with the color palette and dramatic dots (which you know, I’m also partial to). The super blonde pixie cut is also doing it for me.

Brie LarsonBrie Larson’s robot-esque space pajamas from Prada is another ensemble that might raise the wrong kind of eyebrows, but it’s getting only good eyebrows and hand claps from here. Setting it off is the hair twist as Larson goes all in.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

31 Jan

Switching from red carpets and the many events January has delivered (well aside from one) it’s going to be a costume heavy “Out of the Box” this week as we take a look at The Carrie DiariesHow I Met Your Mother and The Originals.

This is the Time

Prom on The Carrie Diaries didn’t disappoint; so much tulle, color, sequins and pattern. Walt looks pretty dapper in his tux too. As with most of the costuming from this show these pieces aren’t vintage ’80s and both Mouse and Maggie’s dresses are available to buy if you happen to need a prom dress. Hell even Dorrit got in on the whole gown thing and wore bubble gum pink, even if she was doing it for irony. Oh, Dorrit. It’s the last episode of season 2 tonight and it could also turn out to be the series finale as there’s no word on renewal. I hope this isn’t the case as there’s still a lot more life in this show and Walt’s story been an emotional roller coaster that I’m not ready to disembark.

How I met your motherI haven’t seen any of How I Met Your Mother this season as I fell out of love with it a few seasons back, but after seeing so many positive reactions about this week’s episode “How Your Mother Met Me” I dipped back in and I’m so glad I did. Cristin Milioti made me care about a character we didn’t even get to see and by her La Vie En Rose rendition the screen was incredibly blurry. Milioti is just so effortlessly charming and while the long path to unveiling the mother hasn’t gripped me, her performance is the opposite. In the shot above the Mother is wearing the J Crew Majesty pea coat we featured on our wish list a couple of months ago and it looks great on Milioti, love the lighter color.

The Originals 1.12It was a flashback heavy week on The Originals as we ventured back to the start of prohibition; Marcel has just returned from serving in WWI hence the uniform and the tuxedoed Klaus and Elijah are unsurprisingly dapper. So many eras of suits to cover and thankfully not as many awful flashback wigs. When will either this or TVD indulge my love of the ’70s? Then there might be terrible hair.

Taylor SwiftThis one photo is not like the others and yet there’s something just as dramatic about Taylor Swift whipping her hair at the Grammys as she plays the Jake song (or “All Too Well” to give its full name). This stunning gown with bejeweled shoulders is by Alberta Ferretti and it adds well dressed spectacle to this moment. So Taylor you didn’t win, even though for a second you thought you did, but you will always have this moment among all the awkward dancing gifs. I have no rhythm when it comes dancing and so this Tumblr is my new everything.

TV’s Women of Comedy Shine at the 2013 Met Gala

7 May

Last night the 2013 Met Gala was held in New York City at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and while all eyes were on what Beyonce, Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow were wearing, here at TV Ate My Wardrobe we want to highlight what the women of television were wearing. Actresses from both comedy and drama were at the event and as this is meant to be fun night of outlandish and creative fashion we’re going to focus on the women of comedy.

The theme of the night was “Punk” as the Costume of Institute Gala celebrates the opening of Punk: Chaos to Couture; an exhibition examining the impact that punk has had on high fashion from the 1970s to the present day.

It’s a broad theme and as you will see from the variety of outfits and some took this to mean dramatic make-up, whereas others like Miley Cyrus embraced the punk look from head to toe.

Lena-Dunham-Met-Gala-2013Girls creator and star Lena Dunham arrived at the event in Erdem and with designer Erdem Moralioglu in a black floor length gown with a polka dot (!) mesh panel. This panel meant that you could see Dunham’s back tattoo and worked well with the punk theme. The combination of the floral print on the dress and the polka dot is pattern clashing at its best and this is my favorite red carpet look of the night. Both her make-up and hair are simple, opting for smokey eyes that were a bang on trend at the Gala (darker make-up equals punk in the fashion world).

Aubrey Plaza metAubrey Plaza has featured several times on TV Ate My Wardrobe’s “Look of the Week” list for her April Ludgate costumes that I covert and while this outfit isn’t something you would see on Parks and Recreation, it is also one of my favorite ensembles of the evening. Plaza was dressed by Vogue magazine in a Marios Schwab dress with Barbara Bui heels. A dress with a built in cape satisfies my inner superhero and one that sparkles as much as this does is an instant hit.

Zooey Deschanel Met Zooey Deschanel’s one shouldered Tommy Hilfiger might not automatically suggest anything remotely punk, but her clutch purse featuring an image of a safety pin in hot pink adds a slight punk edge to this classic look. Deschanel doesn’t go for the heavy make-up approach and she’s also ditched her famous bangs for the evening giving a fresh face appeal. Like many others on this red carpet Deschanel hasn’t fully embraced the theme, but the New Girl star looks elegant with a dash of punk with her purse.

mindy and BJMindy Kaling (seen above with Mindy Project/The Office co-star B.J. Novak) joked to Popsugar TV that she was the “antitheses of punk” as she couldn’t stop smiling on the red carpet. Kaling also claims that the most punk thing she did when she was growing up was to stay up late to watch Saturday Night Live. This early foray into television comedy has certainly paid off as after a rocky start, The Mindy Project has found its feet and is my favorite new comedy of the year (though sadly it doesn’t have much competition). Kaling embraced the smokey eyes and photos on her Twitter page reveal a close look at her hair and make-up (bonus sparkles). Bold lips and eyes can be hard to pull off, but Kaling does just this. There were a lot of updos but Kaling rocks a textured hair down approach which goes with the make-up and dress choice (you can follow Kylee Heath who did Kaling’s hair on Twitter).

Taylor Swift MetThis last addition is cheating a little, but as Taylor Swift is appearing on the New Girl season finale next week her inclusion doesn’t feel too outlandish. Plus she looks really great and different from the usual sweet Taylor that we see on the red carpet. Wearing a black J. Mendel gown with mesh cutouts, Swift is one of the starlets that looks more punk than her usual appearance. This is another example of heavy eyeliner and dark eyeshadow, which was rather ubiquitous at the Gala and it strikes a nice balance with the soft pink lip color. Like Kaling, Swift has gone for ruffled hair and she’s also added a subtle dash of pink to her blond locks.

Taylor Swift’s New Girl Appearance: First Look

2 May

When it was announced that Taylor Swift was going to guest star on the New Girl season 2 finale my initial reaction was apprehension as it felt like stunt casting. This isn’t to say that I have anything against Swift (“Red” has been on constant rotation since it was released) and I find her rather fascinating, but my worry was whether she would add anything to New Girl beyond “Oh hey it’s Taylor Swift.” What makes the casting more intriguing is that Swift isn’t playing herself even though she has been referenced a couple of times on the show (Nick dancing to “22” is a sight to behold), instead she’s appearing as a former girlfriend of Cece’s fiancé Shivrang. Entertainment Weekly has got a first look at this guest appearance and it takes place at Cece and Shivrang’s wedding. Spoilers ahead.

NewGirl-Ep255_ElaineBigDay-ScTaylor_00799.JPGSwift’s character is called Elaine and it’s probably not a coincidence that the title of the episode is “Elaine’s Big Day” and Schmidt isn’t the only one planning to sabotage the wedding. Jess is the maid of honor and has her own personal issues to deal with as she is trying to figure out what is going on with Nick (after that HUGE moment this week). It’s a sitcom wedding so expect a mixture of comedy and drama as well as heartfelt declarations.

New Girl creator Liz Meriwether was super complimentary about the singer and tries to reassure viewers about this casting telling Entertainment Weekly “She kind of came and nailed it. We love bringing in guest stars, but we really try to make it feel like they’re part of the show and it’s not just stunt casting.” Meriwether also teases that Swift “did a little bit of a riff on one of her songs.” Please let it be “I Knew You Were Trouble.”

What are your thoughts on Taylor Swift appearing on New Girl?
